Can't edit in Quicktime Pro

I just upgrated to Quicktime Pro, but the edit fuctions are unavailable. I have saved a movie clip imported from a Video Camera as a .mov file, and selected a portion, but copy / cut / paste etc. are still grey. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Open the file with QuickTime Player and look at the Movie Info window.
I'll bet you'll see that the file is MPEG-1 format.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can convert it to QuickTime formats that you can edit. QuickTime Pro can't edit muxed track formats (MPEG 1 or 2 and Flash).

  • What types of video can I edit in QuickTime Pro?

I'm looking to simply cut sections of existing video and save them as a new file. I tried doing this with an .mpeg, but with no luck. Does QuickTime Pro only allow you to edit .mov files, or can you edit other formats as well?

    .mov

MOV is a container, not a format (codec). Inside a MOV container is the video file which could be in an unsupported format like DivX, in which case the required codec is needed. Some files that end in MP4 are not in a conforming MPEG-4 codec and they won't play either. You forgot to mention WMV which can be played for free with Flip4mac and exported for a small cost with an upgraded version of F4M.
Users should have ONLY - unless something very specific is supplied with an application - apple's codecs, Flip4mac to play Windows media files and Perian 1.1 to play back all the cruft from the interweb, in their Quicktime folder.

  • Can't edit in QT Pro

Dumb Question. I've updated to pro and can select parts of a movie, but the edit selections (cut, copy, paste, trim to selection, etc.) are not active. What am I doing wrong?

QuickTime Pro doesn't edit MPEG (.mpg) files so these menu options will appear grayed out.
Use some third party software to convert your .mpg files to QuickTime format and then you can edit.
MPEG-1 and 2 are playback formats and QuickTime Pro can't edit muxed file formats (audio and video in the same track).

  • Can't register upgraded Quicktime Pro (invalid registration) Now what?

Just upgraded to Quicktime pro. I'm running the current Quicktime 7 Player. Followed instructions, went to system preferences, opened Quicktime registration, filled out info, then entered number given to me by Apple for Quicktime Pro. Then I opened Quicktime, and then INVALID REGISTRATION came up in the registration icon. Tried it four times. Even copied the registration # from Apple receipt but still the same message: INVALID REGISTRATION.

Visit your Apple Store account. It should be listed there in the Soiftware Downloads area.

  • Can anyone help with Quicktime Pro audio prob?

I've been trying to compress an audio/video file shot on my Cybershot so that I can upload on a contest website. Every time I copy into I-Movie, I have no audio (although it plays fine on my desktop). I was told I-Movie does not support muxed streaming. At Apple's recommendation, I upgraded to Quicktime Pro.
The audio and video both work fine when I play it in Quicktime Pro; but when I export it from Quicktime to either MPEG4 or Quicktime Movie, I get no audio. (Also, the audio setting area is grayed out.) Any suggestions? I need to send the file 320X240 around 15 mb by midnight tonight.
    Thanks for the help...

Use the "Export to DV" option. (Any of the sub options will work.) Split into segments if needed for older versions of iMovie.

  • I got a new macbook, but can't upgrade to quicktime pro.

I read that I may have to get snow leapard or something.  Do I have to pay for snow leopard? I already bought a registration key for quicktime pro and it seems ridiculus to have to pay for both.

Click here, download the software, and apply the QuickTime Pro key to it.

  • Can't register my quicktime pro

I have quicktime 7 installed and when I use my registration # to register Pro nothing happens

I have quicktime 7 installed and when I use my registration # to register Pro nothing happens
Is the purchased key for the correct platform? (I.e., Windows keys don't work on Macs and vice versa.) Is the "Registered To" entry entered exactly as the name under which it was purchased? (I.e., salutaions and suffixes are significant if used in the purchaser's account name.) Was the key entgered or copied exactly as contained in the confirmation email?
What does "noting happens" mean to you? Did the QT icon change (have Pro superimposed on it), do the "grayed out" options become available if you load a file, do you have access to the "Properties" window, etc? (I.e., in some cases users have avctivated their Pro key but did not recognize this fact for one reason or another.)

  • Can i use my quicktime pro to convert to .mp3???

i edited (cropped) an .mp3 file and when i saved it, it automatically saved it as a .mov file even though its only audio
i now want it back to .mp3
is there anyway to do this, as far as i know i can only convert to au,aiff and wav files (in regards to audio formats) but no .mp3
    help???

You can export to .aiff or Apple Lossless and then use iTunes to convert to MP3.
I actually think you can can import the .mov file to iTunes and then convert it to MP3, but I don't have iTunes installed at work so I can't verify.
There is also a shareware program called MP3 Trimmer available that allows you to edit MP3 files without recompressing them, so you don't degrade the audio quality.

  • Can I edit between Premiere Pro & After Effects without having to Render??

Im trying to edit these videos my method was look through the long videos and select clips I want and export them so I could work on AE..
The thing is that the videos loose a lot of quality when I render them on export.
Yes I know I could use After Effects and cut the clips in there but the problem is that it doesnt really cut the clip it just shadows out the rest of the video.
Light Blue: Section I want Shadow Blue: Rest of video
This is bothering me when I try to use time remapping..
or is there any way to actually chop it off??? so that there wont be no shadow..
or is there any way to work between them withouth having to render..

The thing is that the videos loose a lot of quality when I render them on export.
Then you are using wrong settings, plain and simple.
This is bothering me when I try to use time remapping..
How so? Nothing stops you from adding additional keyframes at the trim marks, pre-compose the layer or whatever.

  • Why i can't install my quicktime pro 7 for mac?

The email says that you have to click "all item actions" but i don't even have that button there!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Quicktime PRO NON-Destructive / Unedited videos. Changes won't really apply

    Hi
Although my experience in video editing I still find this behaviour hard to understand:
There are some .MOV videos I edit in Quicktime PRO just because they don't require some big editing and save on the file themselves as i already have a backup copies.
But when it's time to upload them on a website it's like the editing was never done.
For example if I cut 30 secs of video on a 1m30s video, on the site still appears 1.30 secs length,
If i open back again the same video in Quicktime from my computer this shows it up edited.
I checked with webmaster and everything is alright on his side.
So what I suppose, is that Quicktime doesn't really cut but rather hide the original footage, showing just the edited.
This can be also confirmed by the fact that both files on my computer and on the site have the exact File Size, although their different length in minutes.
But strange how there is no "revert to original" menu function on Quicktime PRO.
Can anybody say something more technical about this ?
Trust me this bug make waste people entire DAYS, not just time. Thanks.

It doesn't make people familiar with QT waste even minutes, since "Save As" has been around since Moses first edited a movie. Trim/cut/etc., to your original. Save as, self contained, new file name. Keep or get rid of original - if cut/trimmed don't save on exit when asked. No need for revert as you have the new file edited and the source, unedited.

  • QuickTime Pro download...

For not real reason other than I can, I just ordered QuickTime Pro for Mac.  I'm running Mavericks with the latest updates.  I signed into the QT order page, paid for the software, received an email with the order info, but no indication as to how to complete the download order.
I expected this to be an immediate download.  Should I have received the download immediately or do I have to wait several hours/days before the download is available?
I'm out $30, but no QuickTime Pro.  Seems strange to me.  I understand if it were to be a DVD mailed to me, but it clearly states this is an electronic order.
    Anyone else experience this?

To be quite frank, I don't understand much of the above comments.  So I guess I'll just punt.  The ONLY reason I got QT Pro was that I can't play any of the TV shows that I've paid for and downloaded from iTunes.  I never had any trouble until I upgraded to Mavericks.  When I try to pay one of these videos, I get a popup saying I need some add on QT component  and get directed to a page with maybe 10 of these codex options.
While I agree that Mavericks is a disaster as far as QT and QL is concerned, I fail to understand why a person would purchase a Pro key without really reading the description of its purpose. It clearly states that its primary use is for the recording of A/V via built-in devices, FireWire camcorders, microphones, etc.; editing of file content; and the conversion of file types/file compression formats. Nowhere does it even hint that QT 7 Pro adds any new codec components (which it doesn't) or allow you to view any more videos natively than the QT 7 player alone does. What it does do, however, is allow you to manually add third party codec components supporting video content not supported natively by QT and/or access QT "Pro" video codec components installed along with/by professional video editor applications. As Deb described, the "open" nature of the QT 7 app interface allows the user to modify his or her system's codec component configuration to support older, third-party, non-QT file/compression formats.
I've tried 2 or 3 on the list and my videos still won't play with QT.  Definitely not user friendly.
While Deb's modifications offer compatibility with most content users are likely come across/download, it does not guarentee 100% compatibility with all files nor does it take into account specialty codecs supplied by what seems to amount to "sponsored" components on the "goto" web page you referenced. In fact, I tend to consider it somewhat irresponsible to arbitrarily add codecs at random just to perform "trial and error" playback tests. The correct and logical approach here would be to downoal a free media utility that examines the file content and tells you which specific codecs were used to create the file so you can then locate, download, and install just the codec component(s) required for QT 7 playback if available for your system.
Since I can watch these videos with my iPad, it's not a big deal if I can't access them with my MBA.
This is disturbing. If you are using default IOS software to view the files, then the files would like be be MPEG-4 or MPEG-4 AVC video with AAC audio which should be compatible with all QT based apps on your computer even under the Mavericks OS. If they are, then it sounds like you either have a problem with your system insallation or your media sharing workflow between iPad and computer or source files and computer.
I guess that's the reason they call it the PRO edition, you have to be a Pro to even understand the options.
Hardly. While the QT 7 "Pro" editing features are currently not given as much attention or credit as I might expect, they are rather extensive for such a cheap utility and offer capabilities normally only available using software like the FCP suite of apps costing more than a thousand dollars. Those familiar with its use can do anything from creating a video Christmas card to applying a B-movie "Grindhouse"-like (scratched and aged film) filter affect to a movie should they desire to do so.
