Can't Edit itunes songs

I've just purchased a new Dell Inspirion loaded with Vista. I noticed after I downloaded itunes and transfered all my music files from an external hard drive that I can no longer edit songs and info on the main itunes page. I could do it with my old computer. I did download the new version of itunes. Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks.

I have key words in comments to create some smart playlists.    I like to add the key words to an existing comment, and often cannot add it to the comment.
So I cut the old comment, go to an editor, paste it, add my key word, and return to paste the new comment - except I can't paste.

Can not edit my songs in the itunes library
Windows7 64 BIT / SP1  /  Self-built PC
Latest ITunes version 10.4
80GB Classic 5th GEN IPOD
I had almost full of content on my ipod, then I upgraded from XP HOME(32) to Windows7 (64 Bit)
What I did not want to do was to spend time loading All 75GB back on the itunes Library, but decided I should restore the ipod, since it's been acting up a bit. I did not deactivate the last XP OS Computer prior to formatting the harddrive, because I thought it would not matter, since the software would be GONE.
So I downloaded another itunes/Quicktime on this new Win7 O.S., and created the same playlists I had before, then dragged each genre/main music folder into the appropriate folder in itunes.
I clicked on a few songs to change the Info, but they are all greyed out and I cannot edit anything....I never had these problems before.
How to I re-enable to EDIT the INFO again?   Thank you!
(itunes also told me I had authorized four out of five computers for this device...WHAT?  There is only one computer, and my one ipod.
......BUT.......My sister has a 16GB itouch, and I put my songs on her itouch, also charged it up on my computer, since she does not have her own computer yet. Will that mess anything up?
Can she create her own User apple ID/password, then be able to edit her stuff from my computer? AUTHORIZE her itouch on my computer, or do I have to create her own playlists (because I have an 80GB, and she has a16GB, obviously, she will not get all mine on her small device) then checkmark ONLY her playlists to manage on her itouch, from my computer?
A few people told me to try this....
I Plugged in the OL' ipod, Under the SUMMARY TAB, and under the OPTIONS TAB, I changed what I had, which was "SYNC ONLY CHECKED SONGS AND VIDEOS" to MANUALLY MANAGE MUSIC AND VIDEOS"
THEN underneath that, "OPEN ITUNES WHEN IPOD IS CONNECTED", "AND MANUALLY MANAGE MUSIC WERE BOTH CHECKED."
THEN - I went back into my Win Explorer Main Music folder, and under PROPERTIES, I unchecked the READ-ONLY Box, hit APPLY, then OK, then I went back into the itunes library and tried to edit a few songs, but they are all still greyed out and not editable.
I went back into the WIN EXPLORER main Music folder and checked to see if the READ-ONLY was still unchecked, but it automatically reverted back to READ ONLY.
Another question I wanted to ask was this. I have my main Music Folder on my Storage HDD. They are MP3 files, and listed as Country,Blues,Classic Rock,Reggae, etc.  After I installed the WIN7 OS, I had to download itunes again/Quicktime,then dragged each main music folder into the appropriate playlist until they were all there.  Since my itunes app is on my Boot Drive, and my main music folder on my Storage drive,am I wasting or adding any needless HDD space having on both HDD'S? or is this a non-issue?  Thank you!

Hello All!
Well, after posting the help messages, I went diggingthrough both my itunes folder on my (C) drive, and then the Music Folder on my(F) Storage drive where I keep all my music files and then went into securityand in each line, I made FULL CONTROL, APPLY, then went back into iTunes afterplugging my ipod in and clicked on MANUALLY MANAGE TUNES.
I don't know which did it, but now I can edit the songs. To answer yourquestion, I was able to play the songs, but just couldn't edit any of themuntil now. Thanks for your Reply!

• I can't edit the song's names neither singer/musician's names on my CDs

This is just to correct my previous question that wasn't clear enough; sorry for that. It's the first time that I am using the "Apple Support Communities".
When I burning the songs to my CDs, I can't edit the song's names, neither the singer/musician's names on my CDs.
After burning, I put the CD to play in my desktop, and in the window that open with all songs that I burned, appears only "Track 01", "Track 02" and so on, and none names for song or singer/musician.
I have tried something that I know to solve this problem, but I didn't have success.
If I burning CD using "Windows Media Player" for song from other source, I can edit the names for singer, for musician, or orchestra, but with "iTunes" I can't do that.
So, please, if anyone know what I can to solve this problem, let me know. I will appreciate any help to my trouble.
Thanks a lot.
Cheers,
Kyoto2014

When this problem occurs, it is usually because the song files are set to read-only. If the read-only setting is the cause of your problem, you can solve it by going to Windows Explorer, selecting all of the affected songs, and unchecking read-only.

• How can you edit a song in iTunes so that you can separate the part I want?

Some songs have LONG intros I'd like to edit out. For example, Elton John's Funeral for a friend/Love Lies Bleeding is only available as one track.
How can I edit out the FFAF part? (at least for the version I sync to my ipod.

Hey there,
One option is to change the songs starting time in iTunes. To change when a song starts and ends locate and highlight the song in iTunes. From there, right->click the song and choose "Get Info" from the Menu. When the window pops up, head over to the Options tab and in the middle of the window there are options to adjust the starting and ending times for that song or songs. When you are satisfied, go ahead and hit OK to apply the changes.
From there, sync the updates to your iPod.
Hope this helped.

• Can you edit a song in iTunes?

Is there a way in iTunes to edit a song? LIke if you wanted to trim the end or the beginning or something like that?

Yes, you can edit in itunes.
Select the song you want to edit. Then go to File>Get Info>Options and select the desired start time and end time using the itunes playback head. Once that is done, then go to Advanced>Convert selection to...
That will make a copy of your selection - with the new start and end times you just selected. That will also leave the original song as it was.
hope this helps.

• TS5181 Can i edit a song thats on my itunes account? If so, how?

If you want to eliminate the beginning and/or end of a song, right-click the track in your library, Get Info, go to the Options tab, and set a Start and/or Stop time.
That is the extent of iTunes's editing capabilities.  Does that suffice for your purpose?   If you need something fancier, you will need an audio editing program such as Audacity.

• Can you transfer iTunes songs between 2 accounts?

I've been sharing an iTunes account with my husband for years, and finally created my own when I bought a new iPhone. Can I transfer all my songs from my husband's iTunes to my new account somehow? If not, what's the workaround solution so that I can basically access both song libraries together on my new device? I also have an iPod that I'll want to do this with. Thx for any advice!

You cannot transfer them to another account.
You can put the songs on your computer and sync them to your device.

• Can I store iTunes songs onto the iPod by using it as a HDD?

Hello. I would like to know if I can store iTunes songs onto the iPod but not as a nMP3 player but as an external HDD. For example, suppose I load 1000 songs onto my iPod to listen to, could I take those same 1000 songs and store them as well? 80 GB is about 10 times the storage I'll ever need so instead of backing up all of my songs onto a DVD or external HDD, I wanted to store them on my iPod. I understand that I will be storing the same songs twice (one for listening and one for backup). Is it possible?

A similar issue but with video files. I have created several Gb of video files and backed them up on DVD. Now I want to only store them on the iPod Classic and be able to paly them on the iPod. My current method is to copy the video files onto the iPod (with disk use enabled) and set iTunes to NOT copy songs/video to the iTunes Music folder. Now when the iPod is connected I drag the video files to iTunes and it creates a link to them (located on the iPod whjich is behaving as an external hard disk) and lists them under TV Shows (or Movies). I can now sync them to the iPod and play them successfully.
Although this works I end up with two copies of each video file on the iPod. I am guessing that if I delete the original (data) video file iTunes will get upset and remove the second copy from the iPod as well when I next do a sync.

• How can I get Itunes songs to my mp3 player (Sony Sonic Stage)?

I've browsed through the forums and it seems a lot of people want to export Sonic Stage files to Itunes!
I want the opposite. I just bought 100 songs from Itunes and can't get the m4a format changed in the Itunes advanced setting and I can't import the songs into my mp3 player (Sony Sonic Stage) because the files don't appear as part of my folder when searching (even though I'm looking for "all files").
I tried the Windows explorer to drag and drop from the Itunes folder to my mp3 player (it is flash based but loaded through the software SonicStage)and it didn't work.
I REALLY don't want to burn all of the new tracks to a CD to try to transfer them all back onto my mp3 player. Am I missing something really simple or is this a compatability flaw? I won't buy any more songs if it's the case but your assistance is GREATLY appreciated

• HT1711 I have all of my music loaded into iTunes and now I can only play iTunes songs.  Can anyone tell me why?

I have all of my music loaded into iTunes but can only play the songs that I bought through iTunes.  Am I doing something wrong or can I only use the iTunes player for iTunes music?

From my post on what seems like the same issue (found here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21087892#21087892)
Take the following steps:
1) while connected to wifi, toggle off then back on the Show All Music and iTunes Match options shown in my original post. Important: I did this step before, but wasn't connected to wifi, and my music disappeared. Subsequently, I connected to wifi and turned off and then back on those options and everything came back though it was grayed out and my only option was to download music.
2) To get streaming over cellular back, go into Settings>General>Cellular and scroll down to the "Use Cellular Data for:" options and make sure the iTunes option is set to 'On'
The above steps will bring back the streaming capability which seemed to go away when you update to 6.1. It didn't ACTUALLY go away, but something about the update toggled off the iTunes option in step 2 above.
I did a final test by turning off wifi, opening Music app and selecting a song. It played successfully without downloading! Crossing my fingers, but I think I'm good to go!
Hope this helps!

• Can't import itunes songs from imovie

When I try to play a song from my itunes list on imovie it doesn't play. Then if I drag it into the movie I get the following error message:
"The file could not be imported: The file could not be found."
If I open itunes I can drag the same song in and it will work. It's just a hassle to do so. Any help?
Mackbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hi, Trevor,
Sorry that didn't work.
Are the songs you cannot import purchased songs from iTunes Music Store? If so, you will need to burn them to a CD and reimport them into iTunes and then they will work.
Or, if you are having problems with only one or two songs, you can use WireTap to record these and then import the resultant AIFC file into iMovie. You can find WireTap here
If you are having problems with all songs regardless of whether they were purchased or imported from your own cds, then the problem is with your iTunes. Try deleting the iTunes plist (Same pathway, just a different com.apple.iTunesplist).
Post back if neither of these helps.

If they are iTunes Plus songs (purchased since 2009) you can convert them to MP3 by following these instructions:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550
Note that the conversion process will create a new MP3 and leave the original AAC in place, so make sure you are using the new one for your player.
If you have any "protected" iTunes song files, you need to first upgrade them to iTunes Plus, and then do the conversion.

• Can't access itunes songs from an old e-mail id

I just purchased a new iPod and am adding songs. One of the songs I try to drop and grag is blocked and itunes asks for the password to an old e-mail address I have not used in 6 years. How can I authorize the song now that I don't recall that re-mail password anymore?

I don't know the answer to the first part (why you can't get to iTunes through Tiger), but regarding the second part, deauthorizing will not cause you to lose any information.  While deauthorized, you won't be able to access some information, but it won't be erased or removed.
