Can't Edit Project From Another Mac

I'm trying to finish an iMovie project that I started in iMovie '05 on my PowerBook G4, but that computer is too full to run iMovie properly and so instead of taking the time to clean that computer, I decided to use my girlfriend's new MacBook to do the job on a better processor. Unfortunately, when I started to try and add transitions, it doesn't let me adjust the duration of the photo, since the photo library the project was created from cannot be found on this computer. If I don't adjust the times, then the transitions will just cut down the display times of all of my photos that I add them to. Does anyone have any advice in this situation or any workarounds that I could try? Thanks!

Not having done the procedure that you are doing, I can only speculate.
In a test project, I imported a photo into iMovie from my iPhoto library. Then I deleted that photo from my iPhoto library and emptied the trash. I was still able to change the duration of the photo in iMovie by using the Show Photo Settings box, even though the photo was no longer in my iPhoto library. (But I could not adjust the duration by control clicking on the photo and going into the Show Info box.) The above leads me to believe that your problem is not related to your photo having been created in the library of another computer. The photo would still be in your iMovie media file that you brought with you when transferring the project, and that's all that should be required for iMovie to edit it.
I think that your problem may be that the version of iMovie running on your girlfriend's computer is incompatible with iMovie5 that you used to create your project. Is she running iLife 08 and iMovie 6.0.4? Or exactly what? It it's iM6.0.3, you should be getting a little dialogue box that asks if you want to update your old version.
Or, it may be that the iMovie version on your girlfriend's computer is not working properly. You might consider shutting down iMovie and trashing the com.apple.iMovie.plist file located in User/Library/Preferences. iMovie will create a new .plist file on relaunch. Then do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility app.
I am not running iLife 08, if that's what your girlfriend is running, so don't know if the above will work. It is a procedure that is commonly used when running iMovie 6.0.3. But use at your own risk.
Perhaps others on this forum will weigh in with other suggestions.
Good luck with this.

  • Can I restore backup from another mac with time machine?

I would like to restore files from a TM backup from another Mac - is this possible? Thanks.

I'm not sure I know how to help. I use OS X Server's Time Machine services from a Mac Mini to do my back ups to a drive connected to that server. I have the same user account on one MBP Retina that does not do back ups as another MBP Retina that DOES back ups. However, I can't even open the sparse bundle from the one that doesn't do back ups of the one that does (if that makes sense).
You might try and see if this link helps. This guy was the TM guru around here. He might have addressed a solution to what you're trying to do.

  • Can I download iPhoto from another Mac?

    Hi guys,
I have an iMac running Mavericks, and also a MacBook Pro 2011. I accidentally deleted iPhoto on the iMac, and since iPhoto comes pre-installed, I have it on the MacBook Pro. Do you think it is a good idea for me to copy the .app file and place it in my Applications directory on the iMac?
I just don't want there to be any problems if I do this.
    Thanks

As long as you properly accepted the iLife apps into your Mac App Store account (you should see them with all the other apps in the Purchases list) when you first configured the new Mac, then there should be no issue copying the app to another Mac that you own or control.

  • Can I edit a project on one Mac remotely from another Mac?

As far as I know, you can access and control a Mac from another Mac that is not on the same network, say if you are travelling with a MacBook Air and need to access files and applications on your iMac at home.
I'm wondering if it's possible to work with Final Cut Pro X in this way. So you could access the project on an iMac from a MacBook Air, see the screen of the iMac and enjoy all the power of the iMac for editing and exporting in FCPX while controlling it from your MacBook Air.
If so, that would be so convenient, whether it be while travelling or even when at home and wanting to make a quick adjustment to something from the MacBook Air resting on your lap.
Has anyone here ever done this or know if it's possible?
    Thanks!

There are ways you can access the iMac and the screen and the software but it's not useable as an editing platform. The response time over the Internet is way, way, way to slow. Plus no keyboard shortcuts work. Everything has to be mouse driven.

  • Can I move an ongoing imovie project from my mac to another mac?

I would like to move my ongoing imovie project from one mac to another and then continue working with the project. Is this possible? If it is, how do I do?
    /Caro

You will need an external hard drive that is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Then you will move the Project to the external hard drive from within iMovie.
    See here for instructions. http://help.apple.com/imovie/#move7d66613
Then you will use the File/Consoldate Media command to move everything else.
    See here for instructions. http://help.apple.com/imovie/#mov3ac6c7c9
You can edit on the new Mac from the external drive, but if you prefer, you can move everything to the new Mac by using the same instructions above.

  • I have no problems copying iMovie Events from one Mac to another, however, how can I copy iMovie Projects from one Mac to another?

I have no problems copying iMovie Events from one Mac to another, however, how can I copy iMovie Projects from one Mac to another?  Any help will be appreciated.  Thank you.

This should give you some good insight, I'd probably store them on an External HD on the old machine and then just drag and drop to the new machine.

  • Project from one mac to another

    Hi
How dose one take a project from one mac to another.
On one of mac the fotage has been cut as a ruff cut and I would like to take that edited to another mac the fotage is on both mac. Is it as simple as a edl list and reconnect the fotage on the other mac.
tips please as this is the first time I'm going to do this
thanks for helping out going from 5.1 to 6

Just copy the project file to the other Mac, and open it. Reconnect if FCP asks you to.
If you just want that single sequence, right-click the sequence in the Browser window, and choose File -> Export -> XML (version 3). Copy and import that in FCP on the other Mac. (File -> Import -> XML)

  • How do you Move an iMovie '08 Project to Another Mac?

What's the best way to move an iMovie '08 project to another Mac on my network? (Both Macs have iMovie '08.) Specifically, is there an easy way to move a project and the event containing the imported clips in one step?
Often, I'll do work on my Intel MacBook then transfer stuff to my Intel iMac for long term storage. In iMovie '08, I tried various imports and exports and nothing worked so well. For example, when you drag and drop a project file from one computer to another the clips don't come with it. You can play the movie but the clips in the media browser are grayed-out.
There ought to be something like the archive routine that packages up everything and lets you put it on another computer for further editing.
    Thanks!

I would like to know the same thing but not for another Mac... just another user. Should be almost the same procedure right?
My iMovie '08 is crashing like crazy! I just want to get the projects into iMovie using a fresh user and hope that fixes it. I can see where copying/moving preferences into the library of the other user (along with duping the projects in the movies folder) might succeed in opening the project in another user. I'm just afraid of moving bad prefs or something.

  • Anyone know which render format I should use, my film will be used on a video wall (12 screens) and I need super quality. My footage format is 1080p HD resolution 1920x1080. I will be running the project from a mac with a direct line to video wall. Thanks

I do some VJ-type work, involving playback of QuickTime files from the computer to projections, and I get good results using ProRes 422. That's convenient, because ProRes 422 is such a great editing codec, too.
Traditionally, VJs use PhotoJPEG codec, which also works well, but it's a bad editing codec. So you would have to export an edited master, then convert.
If you want it to look as good as possible, definitely schedule some time to test the footage on the wall. You may want to change the color correction of your footage to match the projectors. And if you feed the video wall some flat gray, you can see if any of the projectors need to be  adjusted.
I'm not sure what application you're using for playback, but QuickTime Player 7 works well. It has an option to play fullscreen on an external monitor (View > Present Movie…).

  • How can I edit material from 1 or more dvds that I created from my own filmed material in iMovie but which I no longer have in iMovie

How can I edit material from 1 or more dvds that I created from my own filmed material in iMovie but which I no longer have in iMovie

You need to 'reverse engineer' them :
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • USB install from another mac?

Hi, quick one if I may, I am looking to reinstall snow leopard on a new hard drive so my question is can I copy the necessary files from a friends Mac mini onto USB and boot from there? Obviously I'm not going to do this if it's illegal or whatever, thanks in advance

If you own a retail DVD installer for Snow Leopard 10.6, but do not have an optical drive in your computer, or the internal one has failed, it is possible to use another computer's optical drive to install OS X into a Mac.
    {A copy from another Mac would not be correct or legal, also it likely won't work directly as the Installer puts correct parts into the machine it was installed into, such as hardware drivers, etc. And the disc is a license for one Mac to run it at a time.}
Under this circumstance, there are a few methods of using another Mac to perform this task; one is Target Disk Mode, if both Macs have FireWire &/or Thunderbolt ports and correct cables. Another is to use a utility in the Mac by the name of 'remote install Mac OS X' in the Utilities folder. There may be other similar means, depending on the version of computer and OS X your system(s) are running.
If only parts of the system are damaged or missing, you could use Pacifist utility from charlessoft company to extract the parts you need from a system disc, and it will install them from the desktop of the computer that needs them. The utility is a download and has a demo mode that should work adequately for this task.
You should own the retail DVD 10.6 Snow Leopard, if you have a computer that runs it. The disc (as needed) is proof of the License to use the software. With later computers, the Apple ID and the mac/app store has a record of your activity in regard to permissions of use and end user license.
Sorry to not be of much help.
I have antiques & most DVD media for each system.
And a few clones on external hard disk drives.
PS: Not sure about the copy to USB recovery idea; later Lion 10.7 and Mt Lion
had this, I'd seen info about it online. A cloned system, if your computer had one
could be used to extract or copy parts from. Some don't like drag/drop install.
    Good luck & happy computing!
