Can't edit text in logo .ai file that was provided to me

Hey guys,
I had a company create my logo and they sent me the original .ai file. I want to keep the same fonts as the original logo and create a new slogan for business cards. I have two questions, please help..
1) How can I tell what the exact font is that they are using in the existing logo? They sent me three new fonts to add to my computer to display things correctly. I think they have some fonts outlining others,etc.
2) Am I able to just open the logo and remove the image and then edit the text in the font and just change the letters? This should keep the font the same but I have not been able to figure out how to edit the text. When I choose the text box it just lets me create new text and not edit the existing.

Yes. no. You may have to start all over again. If you type the same letters with the three fonts, you can compare to see which one(s) was/were used.

Ok, what we can tell you is that if this is a LiveCycle form (and we can be pretty sure it is), that you are absolutely right. Acrobat can fill it, and nothing else. These are a very special kind of PDF, where all the text is in a special XML format that Acrobat can only show, not edit.
So, you are on the right track: if it can be edited, you need LiveCycle Designer. Unfortunately, we don't know much about it in this forum, so please try posting here: http://forums.adobe.com/community/livecycle/livecycle_modules_and_development_tools/livecy cle_designer_es

I have recently created a letterhead in Illustrator.
Is there a way to change a person name and title after saving it as a pdf file? I heard something about creating a form in Acrobat professsional.
I need to print out a letterhead with different peoples name and title. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, if you use Acrobat Pro to save the PDF as a Reader-enabled form.
1. Create your letterhead in Illustrator (or whatever). Leave design space for, but do not create text objects that you want to be editable.
2. Save as PDF.
3. Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro. Use Acrobat's Form tools to add text fields whereever you want the end users to be able to key text.
4. Select the Enable Reader Usage Rights command in Acrobat to make the form fields edtiable in Reader. Save the file.
Recipients of the PDF can now open it in Reader, edit the content of the fields, and save the file with their edits.

Can I edit footage, using the DV files that are saved over a network?

What I mean is, I have saved my MiniDV DV footage to a external hard drive which I connect to over ethernet, its not a NAS, its a HDD in a PC I have.
I have my iMac (intel 2GHz), can I use iMovie 08 to import,edit and save to the HDD over the network?
Its just the files are big (ie 13Gb per hour), so I save them on my external HDD, rather than my iMac
Will it cause any problems? or anything?

Ethernet is generally slower than FireWire.
You could import the files into your iMac and edit them there, then save all the edited material back onto the external hard disc. But Ethernet isn't generally fast enough for real-time editing (..across the network..) onto the external disc. So you'd (1) move the files to the internal, (2) edit them there, (3) export or Save the edited project back again to the external disc.
Note than a disc formatted for use on a PC will probably be identified by your Mac's 'Finder' as a "PC Exchange format" disc ..the file system used on the disc would probably be the DOS 'FAT 32' system.
Although Macs can read and write to this format, some of the iMovie-specific "metadata" may not be saved onto a FAT 32 disc; iMovie prefers to work with a Mac-formatted "Mac OS Extended" format ..but PCs generally can't read or write to that!
So what you may need to do is to bring in all your material onto the iMac for editing, and then 'Share' or Export the resultant movie(s) as QuickTime movies (..instead of as original 13GB-per-hour DV files..) if you want to be able to play the results on that PC itself.
But I'd avoid using an external hard disc which is actually in a PC; the format (file system) - although
it'll work with a Mac - is all wrong for iMovie.
Invest in a proper, separate external FireWire hard disc - they're cheap now: Amazon's selling 1000 gigabyte discs for £89 ..that's about $140..! - and immediately format it (..using Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility..) as 'Mac OS Extended', and then use it exclusively with your iMac.
You'll be far happier that way..

Unfortunately you can't. A JPEG is a flat raster (pixel-based) image file which has no awareness of "text" inside it. You could try to erase the text and graphic under it and then recreate the text, but it's best to do so using a mastering format such as PSD (Photoshop) or PXM (Pixelmator), so that you can export as JPEG but keep your layered master for later editing.

Editing text in all PDF files

Hello,
I am very new to Acrobat and am trying to change some text in some of my documents, but can't seem to be able to do so. I am using Acrobat X Pro and i use the "Edit Document Text" tool, but the cursor does not change to the text editing cursor. I tried opening other PDF documents and it seems that I am able to edit text in some PDF files, but not the text in others. For the one that I am trying to edit, I did the "Recognize Text" function. I can high-light the text and even search the document for certain words, but can't seem to change any of the text. I can select the text to cross out or put a comment in them, but still can't remove some words/letters & retype.
This is really frustrating, as these documents are the only reason I wanted Acrobat X - so I can edit a few words on them.

Nono, I've been trying to say that I CAN high-light it. I can high-light any text in there, select it for commentating, do the strike-out notes on it. I can even do ctrl+F and search for a word that's within the document and it will find that word. There is no "original" PDF because that IS the original.
I can do everything else to the text except actually edit it (basically deleting or changing the words).
This is frustrating because other files that people send me that are generated via an automated system are editable, but my own PDF files are not, and I want to know what that difference is and how I can change it so that I can edit my own PDF files.

No, tab-formatted text is not editable in the manner you desire. As for your question - tab is just a character like any other. You are simply taking a given kind of implementation for granted, nothing more, but that must not necessarily be the case for all programs. An evil programmer just could assign the tab key to forward delete or any other fancy function just as he could make your space key draw funky symbols from a different Unicode range, if you get my meaning... so simply take it the way it is. Interestingly I have found that if I modify a document in CS6 from an earlier CS3-CS5 document and save it - it works fine. But if I create a new document in CS6 the issue persists.
Looks like I will be modifying old documents for the time being

IBooks Author - can't edit text on customized template

I've created a template and saved it to My Templates. However, when I select a layout (a chapter or section) and place it into my book, I can't edit the text. Where am I going wrong?

I tried the above but still can't edit text.
I'm inserting a page and then changing it to 2 Column. It is linked to the first page. If the first page has enough text, it overflows into the new page and I can edit it.
However, I want the new page to be stand alone. So I remove the link to the first page. The text disappears. When I double click into either column, I can't add any text to this page. I have to add a text box into the column, which of course isn't going to overflow into column 2.
The strange thing is that I have another page a little further up that is also 2 Column. It is not linked to the first page but I can type text into it. This text will overflow from column 1 into column 2.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Depends on the extent of the edits. You will need Acrobat in any case. If the edits or minor, you can use the text edit tool. For major edits, you need to request the original file be sent or see if you can Save As a DOC or related file type. PDFs are not really structured for editing and you are asking for a lot of grief if you want to do much. Exporting is the best way, or even better simply asking the author for the original (non-PDF type).
