Can't edit track info on some tracks...

I've had this issue since iTunes 7.5, now I'm using 7.6.
Lately I've been having problems when trying to edit track info in iTunes. Some tracks info field is greyed out and I therefore I can't make any changes to these tracks. Often it's tracks from an album where the other tracks are fully editable. When I choose show info in Finder on these specific tracks, only "System" has read and write access to the file. If I try to add myself (admin) Finder crashes and restarts. I've tried to change ID3 tags in iTunes but I'm told that the file is protected. I've also tried to change ID3 tags in MP3 Rage but to no help, it doesn't change anything in iTunes.
I'm not really sure if this is a problem due to my OS 10.5 rather than iTunes, since I'm having the same issues with other kind of files e.g. pictures imported from my digi cam. When trying to rotate a picture in picture wiever and saving it, I'm told that I don't have the necessary permissions. And then again if I try to give myself read and write access Finder crashes.
I've tried to repair disk permissions but are told that no repairs are necessary.
All n all my Mac has been behaving strangely since upgrading to 10.5 (and now 10.5.1). Besides the issues described above, I'm experiencing "strange" things, such as volumes not being mounted, program and document icons changing, when trying to move a file (within folders on my internal drive) it's being copied instead of moved, and so on...
I'mreally desperate for a little help, as I haven't got a clue about what's going on.
TIA for any input.

Ok just randomly solved this problem.I checked the iPhone and found the manually manage the music was unchecked. Checking this fixes things, but everytime I plug my iPhone into the computer it unchecks it again. Yet another reason NOT to upgrade to iTunes 11.

  • Itunes song will not delete and I can't edit the info

I added some songs to itunes 9 and now i want to delete one of them. I tried using delete, right-click delete, and edit delete. The window that asks if i'm sure I want to delete the song from the library doesn't even pop up. It's like the song isn't even there. It still played when I clicked on it but I can't edit the info either. I'm unable to click on the info boxes and the tabs for lyrics and artwork are grey. Then I realized I should just delete the actual file from the folder. That deleted from the trash but now the song says it can't locate the file and I have an exclamation mark next to the song name and it still won't delete. I have over 5,000 other songs and have never encountered this problem. I've deleted other songs since using itunes 9 and it has been fine. Is there something wrong with the song file? Please help!

I'm having this problem too. It does not seem to be a permissions issue. I have found so far that restarting iTunes will allow me to edit a song I have previously been unable to edit.
This is happening with iTunes 9.0.1 (9) I can't say for sure that it wasn't happening under 9.0 - but I didn't notice it then.
I find that songs are uneditable after they have been downloaded to iTunes. Not all songs, just some, on an unpredictable basis. I don't know if there are other older songs with the same problem, or whether it's just new downloads that are being affected.
I've also noticed that it's impossible to delete one of these songs from a playlist.
So - in summary : Download an album ... 2 or 3 songs on the album will be impossible to edit (song info) and impossible to delete from a playlist ... restarting iTunes allows them to be edited ...
    It's a really odd one.

  • Can't edit track # in song info

In my music library, I'm able to edit song info such as artist, song name, album, etc. But I can't figure out how to change the track # of a song. I have the column displayed for track #'s, but clicking inside the track # boxes doesn't allow me to edit the numbers. This is particularly frustrating for files that don't have track numbers at all, since they're listed out of order. How can I fix this? Thanks

You can't get to it from the main library screen.
Right-click on the track > Get Info > Info tab
    You can change it there.

  • Can't edit tracks after transferring iTunes library.

    Hi,
I've just bought a new MacBook Pro, and wanted to transfer all of my music and photos to it from my current iMac. I went about this by copying the "iTunes Music" folder in the "Music" section of my user, along with the extra files like "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Library Extra". I did this over a wireless network and it took an age since my library is about 35GB.
I put the folders and files in the same place they were on my iMac on my MacBook Pro. I booted up iTunes and it worked fine, my library looks exactly the same as it did on my iMac. However, I can't edit any of the track information or even add new album art to existing tracks. I thought I might need to change the permissions of the new tracks as they said 'Read only'. But after changing a few to 'Read & Write' (a long process), there has been no change.
Can anybody offer any insight into this problem? My iTunes Library is very important to me!!
    Thanks.

Every file in the massive "iTunes Music" folder was set to 'Read only'. I went and changed a few to 'Read & Write', but when I found those songs in the library, they still couldn't be edited. To go through the entire folder and change each file to 'Read & Write' will take forever! And I'm not convinced that will fix the problem since it hasn't worked for individual tracks.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Can't edit folder info after importing & editing using iTunes... Help.

I've notice that when editing CD info after importing into iTunes that sometimes folder names in my music library, under itunes media/music, does not match the info that I've just edited in iTunes. When attempting to edit the folder's name I have to add the folder into iTunes again, to locate music files after edit change (?), only to have the edited folder name switch back to the previous name. Is there something that needs to be disabled. I've looked all over but can't seem to find help for this particular situation.

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
iTunes can't or won't use certain characters in file & folder names and uses a maximum of 40 characters for the file or folder name, inclusive of any extention such as ".mp3" (=4 chars). If you manually rename anything iTunes will lose track of it. The best advice is simply to leave iTunes to it. Once you've thrown the data into it, iTunes will get it back for you when you ask, so why does it matter how iTunes chooses to organize it? Saldy, I can't follow my own advice and choose to keep my library organized manually. These days I use some custom scripts to move things around and update iTunes in one process, but in the past I would tidy up my tags, amend the file & folder names, then remove the album from iTunes & reimport.

  • Problem with iTunes not sorting album/disc sets right, can't edit album info?

    Hi there,
I have recently been having an issue with my iTunes software. Here is what is going wrong: I right click on an album in my iTunes library, then select "Get Info." The "Get Info" window pops up, and I seem to be ready to edit my album information. Specifically, I am trying to edit the "disc number" (Disc Number 1 of 33, for instance). I can click on the little number boxes, and I can seemingly edit the numbers inside (i.e., change the 1 to 01). But when I press OK to save the changes, the disc number immediately reverts back to its original variable.
The whole reason I am trying to solve the problem above is a direct result of a previous problem. I recently bought a CD disc set (Haydn's Complete Symphonies) which contains 33 discs. When uploading them to my iTunes, everything was going fine until I reached disc 10 (i.e., the discs were all in the right order in my iTunes library, 1-9). When I hit disc 10, I expected it to show up right after 9 but it instead arrived right in front of 1. I now realize that this must be due to some shortcoming in the iTunes code (it thinks 10 is the next number in the sequence after 1, i.e., 1, 10, 11, 12, or something). I tried another disc (11), and it sure enough it appeared right after 10 (right behind disc 2).
I thought I could solve the sorting issue by putting a 0 in front of the disc numbers (01, 02, 03, etc) in order to get iTunes to recognize the correct sorting sequence. This, however, only created another problem, which is first problem I outlined above: I can't edit the disc information in order to make the vital change.
Could this be due to permissions settings? Is it just iTunes being glitchy? Am I missing something really obvious?
I am running Windows 7, 64 bit and have iTunes version 11.0.5.5 installed.
Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Can't edit song info in iTunes 8

I just updated to iTunes 8. Everything was working fine in iTunes 7. Now, I can't edit some songs in my library. When I select 'Get Info', the information is grayed-out and not available for edit. Some songs that I recently added to my library using iTunes 7 can be edited, as well as songs that I added to the library in iTunes 8. I was thinking of trying to uninstall iTunes 8 and then re-install, but I didn't want to waste time if this was a known problem. I have fully administrator rights on my computer and I did not move the library location for the upgrade to version 8.

    My 'gat info problem: I
    Since updating to version 8:
right click to 'get info' on single file is fine.
But if I try to right click on a selection of files, I get a blank grey window, and a sort of weird truncated layout of SOME of the options normally available in those tabs down the right-hand corner of the big grey box. and they appear to be moving out of the frame of the window so some of them are only half visible. You can't get to them. Also if you move your mouse over it, I get a sort of "floating" OK button, - the only way to get out of the thing. Seems to be a serious graphical mess there. (hard to describe-I wish I could attach image file)
Anybody else out there have anything like this?
    Geoffrey in Melbourne Australia
PS: Just a thought: not sure if this is OK with Forum rules, (my apologies if it aint) but here is a link to images of the problem:

  • Can't edit track info

I've recently switched to a MacMini from a Windows laptop. All of my music was stored on an external hard-drive. I have connected the hard-drive to the MacMini, opened iTunes and dropped the music folder into iTunes. All of my music is there, but it won't let me edit the track info.
When I pull up the info on my external hard-drive, the ownership and permissions section indicates that it is read only. How do I get permission to write on it?
The external hard-drive is formatted as a Windows NT filesystem. Do I need to reformat my external hard-drive to be able to write on it?

Congrats on the Mini, Macs are awesome! What you'll have to do is make yourself the "owner" of the files. They have an owner of the user from you Windows box. It is a pretty simple process.
In Finder navigate to the top level iTunes folder. Then click File->Get Info. At the bottom of the window is a permissions section. Click the arrow next to 'Details' under 'Ownership & Permissions' and then click the lock icon to change permissions. From there assign the 'Owner' as your user account name and make sure you set the access to 'Read & Write'. Everything else could be left the same.
    Hope that helps you out.

  • Can't edit track information in iTunes

I imported an audiobook CD into iTunes and then tried to edit it by changing "Music" to "Audiobook" under "options". But that option (and everything else) is greyed out so that the audiobooks are stuck in my music library. It doesn't seem to be a permissions issue - I opened Disk utlities and repaired permissions. I also opened the actual files in Finder and I already have permission to "read and write" - neither of these options worked. Any ideas?

I have been unable to change the media kind of items in my Music library until I go to the Store menu and turn off iTunes Match.  Movies, books, tv shows are not affected.  When finished editing, I turn on iTunes Match.  It takes about 5 minutes to match my 6000+ library again

  • How can I edit mp3 info w/o iTunes for free?

I just switched from a PC to a Macbook Pro. On my PC, I simply right-clicked on an mp3 file, clicked properties, & I edited all of the info contained within that mp3 file. Then, once cleaned up, I imported the mp3 files into iTunes. So now I want to edit some mp3 info on a bunch of mp3 files on my Macbook Pro before I import them into iTunes. I tried editing in the "Get Info" window, but it's not editable. So how can I do this? And how do I do this for free? I'd prefer not to have to download a program to do what seems like such a simple task, but If I have to use another program, I want something that is clean, simple, & free. Thanks.

    Hi Ingo,
Not sure that you read my entire entry. I want to edit the mp3 files BEFORE importing them into iTunes. I have dozens of albums & songs that are missing tons of info like title, artist, track #, etc, or the mp3 files have info in them that I don't want. I'd prefer to edit them & clean them all up first before importing them all into iTunes because they will just have blank boxes & they will all be grouped together at the bottom of my iTunes window, & I won't know which file is which. Right now they're in seperate folders, so I know which artist & album they are. maybe there's a way to do this in iTunes, but from my experience, I've always had trouble knowing which file is with which artist / album when I import several albums missing key info. That's why I like to add it before importing. I guess I could just import 1 album at a time, but that seems very time consuming. Let me know what you think.

I edit the info in each track, album etc, such as creating my own genres, adding years to the track title, correcting any mistakes, etc
