Can't Edit Video Property Tags - e.g. .avi, .mpg, etc

I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate and I wanted to organize my videos by adding tags such as title, genre, etc.
I have read other posts on this and nothing has been helpful. It seems that the moderators keep making the same suggestion to go to Properties>Details, but once they are told
it doesn't work, they do not respond again.
I have tried right clicking on a video and going to Properties> Details and while I can see any information that is there, it is not editable.
I have tried editing it through Windows Media Player. I can edit it there, but when I try to update the file by going to Organize> Apply Media Information Changes (as suggested
in these forums) the files still do not update (i.e. if I go to properties>details, I will not see the information updated there).
I can edit the sample video (.wmv) but as I said I cannot edit properties of my own videos (.avi, .mpg). I have windows 7 at work as well and I seem to be able to edit the properties
of a couple of M4V and Quicktime Movie Files, can’t find any .avi files to test.
I am getting really frustrated with this issue. It seems like it should be an extremely simple thing, and yet it doesn't work. I don't understand why it works for some video files
and not others.
Are there specific video file formats for which you can't edit the properties?
Is there a way these files could have become "locked"? We have tried to make sure that we have full permissions set, and it appears that we do, but are there particular permissions
we could be missing?
The files in question are stored on an External Drive and accessed through the Video Library in Windows Explorer, although copying them to any other location doesn't make the properties
editable.
The only way I have been able to edit these properties and see the changes in window explorer (see them by going back to properties>details) is by using a 3rd party program called
abcavi but while it works sometimes, it corrupts the files other times, so it's not a good solution.
Basically, I know HOW it's supposed to work, but it DOESN'T, so please give me some advice on how to make it work or explain why it doesn't. This is VERY frustrating.

Windows Explorer and WMP probably don't write tags to files in AVI and MPEG format, because these formats don't properly support tagging. I think that it's advisable to instead use new formats, that have proper tagging support, like WMV or MPEG-4.
To edit the tags of AVI and MPEG files,
you could also give ExifTool a try. ExifTool is a command-line application, but you can download
ExifTool GUI to get a nice interface. I haven't tried these programs myself, but it looks like they will do the job.

  • Video Formats - can AVI, MPG etc be added to the N...

    Hi,
    PLEASE HELP!!
I have just bought a Nokia N95 & I am loving it!! the only let downs for me is the Flash (there are some much better qualitiy camera phones/flashes out there), & the Video Formats.
I am trying to find out if you can play other video formats on the N95 such as AVI,MPG etc.
people keep telling me I can convert them, but I would much rather be able to install another player that supports those formats straight away so no conversions have to be done.
    does something like this exist??
    Cheers,
    Matt :-)

There are various additional video player apps for the N95; SmartMovie, Core Player, DivX player, etc.
In any case, if the video files you are trying to use is using display resolution, frame rates, or other attributes that the phone or those players cannot handle, you will still have to use a converter first.
Search this application catalog for other video players apps (like those I mentioned above):

  • How can I edit videos uploaded to MobileMe (soon to be iCloud)

Perhaps I'm missing something, but it's less than intuitive how the MobileMe Gallery handles video.
You can post and delete photos easily through iPhoto, but how does one deal with the movies one uploads through iMovie?
I can't seem to find a nice centralized interface.
Is this coming in Lion? (Must watch Keynote tonight!)

Not sure what you  mean.  If you add movies to a MobileMe gallery in iPhoto and publish they are available online to play.  Just like photos are available to be viewed. Here;s such a gallery: Movie Gallery.
If you need to edit videos you need to do that on your Computer with iMovie or other video editing software.

  • I can not edit video from my new DVD Camcorder...

I recently purchased a Canon DC210 in hopes of learning to edit the movies I make with it before taking my honeymoon to Alaska in May, but I am not able to import the video from the disks.  Is iDVD capable of doing what I am wanting to do i.e.. import, arrange, and edit scenes from the mini DVDs?

Unless I am missing something the list actually skips over my Model Number (Canon DC210)? I am still not seeing anything that tells me that '08 is going to solve any of my problems. I currently have iDVD 6.0.4 and it doesn't seem to have the capabilities I need. I don't think I am going to invest in another piece of software if I am not able to find something that specifically says it will work with my camera or media type.
Can you point me some where that does actually say it will?

  • How can I edit my mp3 tag information?

A few weeks ago we started our first podcast, Your RV Podcast. We've been learning as we go, and "duh," discovered we've been doing our mp3 tags incorrectly. How can I go in and edit my episode mp3 tag info? When I bring the episode up, click on "file" and get the drop down menu, the field for "Get Info" is gray, and I can't even access the info. Thanks for your help!

Drag the local copy of your file into iTunes, so that it will appear in the 'Music' list. 'Get info' should enable you to access the image and other tags; change them there, then re-upload to the server. Note however that when you subscribe to the feed in iTunes the only tags it reads are the image and the duration. All other information comes from the feed.

  • Can't Edit Video

I needed to import a MOV movie from iTunes to my iPad.  The file was imported into the movies list on my iPad, but I can open up the editing to trim.  Can I trim this?  It does play fine on my iPad. Thanks!

  • Can't edit video taken with iPhone 3GS?

I have a .MOV file taken with an iPhone 3GS. I've saved it to my desktop, and opened iMovie '09. First problem is it won't let me drag and drop the movie into the project area; it just bounces. Then I tried the explicit import function. Now the movie is in the bottom window area (as a "New EVENT"), and I can scrub through and play it, but if I select a portion of it the "trim to selection" is greyed out.
How am I supposed to edit this video?
    Thanks in advance!

Okay, I figured it out myself. In case someone else runs into this:
Use the explicit File->Import function to get the video into the bottom window area.
Select the portion of the video you want to keep.
There's a button to the left on the row of buttons just above the bottom window area. That adds the selection to the project. Now you can work with it.
Hope that helps some other iMovie newb.

  • I had bought wi-reader and can play video format like .mp4 directly from hard disk attached to wi-readerbut just wondering if I can play other video file from device like avi.

    Pls advise

Well, in my opionion, you've moved things around so much, it would be better to just clear your current iTunes library and rebuild it.
IMPORTANT - I am talking about clearing the iTunes library file, not deleting song files from your hard drive.
I personally never use WAV files, because I like the tags that come with MP3. I'm a pleasure listener - I don't need WAV files for professional reasons.
When I first got iTunes, yeah, I took the default settings and ripped all my CDs in AAC format (they have .m4a file extensions). I regret this, in one way, because they won't work in other Windows applications & other portable devices. But, they sound great on my iPod and don't take up so much drive space as other formats.
edit: I've no idea what you're talking about with the GraceNotes vinyl lookup. AFAIK, you're going to have to re-rip the CDs in a non-WAV format to get the ID3 tags. But you can google to find more info on that.

  • Editing video on mac desktop. In iPhoto and can't edit.

How can I edit video on my Mac desktop? Video is currently in iPhoto and I can't edit it. I need to rotate it.

You can do some minimal cropping of the movie file in iPhoto, i.e. change the start and stop points, but that's all.
