Can't eject a phantom remote disc?

I have discovered, in Finder, a phantom remote disc.  It was a link to an Ibook with a name.  Since I have been researching it, the name has disappeared.  I have attempted to eject it.  How do I get rid of it and what damage has it likely done?

Try pressing the Eject key on your keyboard.
Or >  If you can't eject a CD or DVD or open the drive tray

  • How to eject phantom "remote disc" on Mavericks?

I bought this laptop second hand, and since I've bought it and through one OS upgrade it's had this "remote disc" in the Finder under "Macintosh HD" and "Network".
Every time I try to eject it nothing happens. I can't open it. It's bizarre.
    Any ideas?

I am looking for a way to get rid of it, as I have no need for it. I have had the same experience as the above user; trying to "eject" it does nothing. I have turned all of the sharing features off, but still it persists.

  • Can Remote Disc install Microsoft Office onto the MacBook Air?

I'd like to purchase a Macbook Air but will need to install MS Office 2011. Can Office be installed with remote disc? I've read abut some copy protection limitations with remote disc so I want to be sure it will work before buying.
    Thanks.

Yes, it certainly can. I loaded it without any problems.

  • Remote disc in finder devices - can't remove it

I have a "remote disc" item in my finder under devices and cannot eject or remove.
    iMac, OS X Version 10.6.7
Background: I have 2 very old Compact Flash USB card readers (Intelliflash and ImageMate) and several Compact Flash cards that I wanted to view before trashing.
The remote disc showed up after plugging these in to my iMac. Could not access the cards and now I can't remove the remoted disc.
I have tried to use the Finder>Preferences>Sidebar to remove, but the remote disk is not included in the list (see screenshot below).
This doesn't seem to be causing any harm, just annoying...
    Any suggestions would much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chet

hold the command/apple-key while dragging this stubborn cd off your sidebar. this solution was proposed by user techtown in thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/15092525#15092525

  • Can you burn files to a remote disc?

I have a core duo iMac, my wife has a MacBook Air. I have previously installed an application on her Air using remote disc. Now I would like to burn some files on the Air (,pdf and .jpg) to a CD mounted in my iMac. Is this possible? I get as far as "Ask to Use" on the Air and "Accept" on the iMac but then the Air just puts up a progress bar "waiting for disc on iMac". I have tried ejecting the blank disc and re-inserting and opening it in the finder but the Air never sees this blank (unrecorded) CD. If I stuff in a CD with something on it, it will acknowledge it.
Am I trying to do something that I just can't do, or am I missing something?

This morning I wanted to burn a backup of my wife's iTunes which are on her MBA. Figured that if the remote disc on my iMac worked so well with the MBA, that it should also work with remotely burning a disc. Tried and tried but it wouldn't open the bank disc in the MBA. After some thought I came to the conclusion that if it was possible to burn a disc wirelessly then Steve and Apple would be screaming the news from every venue. As you know, they are not.
Called Apple Service. Nice guy. Said he'd never been asked that question before. After a lot of checking he confirmed that you can not burn wirelessly from an MBA to anything!
Just thought you'd like to hear my report.
    Thanks

Remote Disc Can't recognize Blank disc, but it does recognize other discs. I am trying to burn something from my itunes on my mac mini to a blank disc on my windows computer. What could be wrong?
I can see other discs such as music and stuff so I know I have installed it correctly but how come I can't see the blank disc that I need to burn?

You can't burn discs remotely, you can only read data discs remotely (i.e. you cannot play movie DVDs either).
Either copy the files to the remote computer or get an external drive.

  • Can't eject disc & it doesn't even show up on system!

I installed Parallels 5.0 from the installation disc, which seems to be installed just fine, but now I can't eject the disc and it doesn't even show up under devices. I tried all these things below except the last one (because I couldnt get my mac to start like it describes). What now? I just bought this Macbook Pro new a week ago - soooo annoying!
Ejecting a CD or DVD when all else fails
If you've tried all the usual methods of ejecting a CD or DVD from your computer's optical drive, there are some other methods you can try.
First, quit all applications that are using files on the disc. Then try one of these alternate methods:
Open Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder), select the disc, and choose File > Eject.
Choose Apple menu > Restart and hold down the mouse or trackpad button until the disc ejects.
If your drive has an emergency eject hole, put the computer to sleep and insert a large, straightened paper clip in the small emergency eject hole of the drive (the location varies, depending on the drive). Push firmly until the disc ejects.
If all other methods fail, you can try to eject the disk using the firmware. (This may not work on all computers. For example, it does not work on Intel-based computers.) The steps below describe how to start up and briefly use the computer with only the firmware loaded, not the standard Mac OS X interface.
To eject a disc using firmware:
    Restart the computer.
When you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Command-Option-O-F keys. (The Command key has an Apple on it.)
Release the keys when you see a white welcome screen.
    At the prompt, type:
    eject cd
Press Return, then wait a few seconds. The disc drive should eject the disc, and "ok" appears on the screen when the action is complete.
    Type:
    mac-boot
    Press Return.
Your computer starts up normally and you see the familiar Mac OS X desktop.

Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
I suggest that to start with you shutdown the computer. If you are unable to remove the DVD then it's possible there's a problem with your optical drive. Take the computer in for service.

  • Can i install windows 7 via bootcamp (MB Air) while using remote disc? I put the windows 7 disk in my macbook pro drive, and connect to my brand new macbook air. In bootcamp i allocate the partition then i click install and bootcamp will not see the disk.

Can i install windows 7 via bootcamp (on my MB Air) while using remote disc? I put the windows 7 disk in my macbook pro drive, and connect to my brand new macbook air via remote disk. In bootcamp (on my air) i allocate the partition, then i click install, and bootcamp will not see the disk from my macbook pro's drive. How do i get the bootcamp assistant running on my MB air to automatically find the disk in my macbook pro with the ISO image of windows 7? The remote disk on my air can find the cd but bootcamp will not begin installing it. Anyway to do this without buying the damned usb drive?

I don't know first hand if you can use the Remote Disk option with Windows but as of 10.7.2 you can now use BCAssistant to make a bootable USB (thumb drive or external disk) W7 installer with the Boot Camp drivers installed also. Have you tried that yet?

  • I'm trying to install bootcamp and XP, but when keyboard does't work. How can I eject the disc?

How can I eject the disc and start over and get into the OSX system?

XP isn't supported in BootCamp, you'll have to use the free VirualBox or one of the other commercial virtual machine softwares to run it in a window on OS X. The performance isn't going to be good enough for 3D games or heavy CPU ones, but good enought for most general use software.
Apple doesn't supply the hybrid MBR and hardware drivers required to run XP in BootCamp any longer. If you were on Snow Leopard 10.6 it's still possible, but not Lion or Mountain Lion.
This is what you do to resolve your problem.
1: Hold the power button down to force a hardware shutdown (emergency use only use the Apple Menu > shutdown all other times)
2: Press and hold the option/alt key on the keyboard.
3: Boot the computer and enter Startup Manager
4: Keep pressing the eject key on the keyboard, the disk will eject.
5: Select OS X to boot from by clicking on the volume and the little arrow that appears.
6: Set Startup Disk in System Preferences  to OS X.
7: Head to BootCamp Utility and use it to remove the BootCamp partition.
8: If you used Disk Utility, then use that to remove the second partition and absorb the remaining space back into the OS X partition.
9: Install VirtualBox, if on 10.8 you migh have to control/right click and "Open" to bypass Gatekeeper controls for the installer and/or program at least once.
10: Read the instructions how to setup and use VirtualBox.

  • Trying to update MacBook Pro to leopard, can't eject update disc !

I was trying to update to Leopard but message said update failed. Now nothing works and I can't eject the leopard disc. I am feeling quite confused at this point.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • Just purchased USB SuperDrive to connect MacBook air can't eject start up disc

just purchased USB SuperDrive to connect MacBook air can't eject start up disc? please advise

No, of course not. The "startup disk" is the disk with your boot volume (operating system) on it. Once you boot (startup) from it it is locked as your computer will not "run" without a valid "startup disk".
It would be similar to complaining that "I can't remove the engine from a running vehicle".

  • Macbook late 2007 can't use remote disc

Snow Leopard retail disc won't load so I'm trying to do remote install.  I can see remote disc under devices but when I Boot with option key pressed there is no option for the remote disc to boot to.  I'm connected via ethernet to a windows 7 computer with the remote disc app installed and running.  Please help.

    Hello MacDoode,
It sounds like you are trying to boot to a Mac OS X install disc in a Windows computer with Remote Disc set up. According to the following article this is not a supported function of the feature:
DVD or CD sharing: Using Remote Disc
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287?viewlocale=en_US
Note: These types of discs or activities are not supported by DVD or CD sharing:
Install discs for an operating system such as Microsoft Windows (for use with Boot Camp), or Mac OS X.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,

  • How can i eject a mini disc?

I inserted a mini-disc on my mac and now I can't see it anywhere and it is stuck
    How can I eject it?

    Well, you can try:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
But this only works if it's a tray drive. If it's a slot drive all you can do is try to shake it out or take it in for service.

  • Can't install Photoshop (CS3) via Remote Disc

I was successfully able to install iWork '08 last night via Remote Disc, but I've tried twice to install Photoshop and both times it failed. I was able to get on Acrobat Professional and some of the Shared Components, but after anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours it gives me a message saying that installation of Photoshop failed.
Anyone else had a similar problem?

Don't know about Windows issues since I was installing from my MBP. I can only imagine it's worse.
I was successful in dragging the entire Photoshop folder over from the MBP last night, but when I opened it it said that pieces were missing. That's the trouble with CS3; it's all so intertwined that it seems like you really need the installer to help you get just the bits you need.
I'm trying to embrace Steve's disc-less vision here, but I'm not sure if we're there yet. I don't want to break down and by the Superdrive, but it sounds like a lot of people got one (probably in anticipation of this kind of headache).
