Can't eject disk on my iMac

I've tried Disk Utility, Rebooting & drutil tray eject - nothing is working. How can I get the CD out of my drive?

If nothing in this works, you need to take it in for repair.
Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

Deauthorizing the computer will only cause you to have to enter a password to play iTunes Store purchases on that computer. It doesn't have anything to do with media thats synced to the iPod, other than the account user name is synced too.

Can manually eject disk from iMac? iMac won't start up. . .

My iMac started acting up, as if a keyboard key was stuck and it kept scrolling through menu items; so I logged out all users and restarted. I get the grey screen with the Apple logo and timer, then it goes to the blue background/Mac OS X screen but the blue progress bar never fills in.
I can't start up from the OS X disk because there's already a disk in there. Anyone know how to manually get a disk out? I'm sure this is on Apple's support page, but it's currently down for maintenence.
We do have an external, USB bluetooth for a bluetooth Apple keyboard and a Microsoft bluetooth mouse; and at first I thought it was the bluetooth that was freaking out.
I know this is a pretty vague problem, but any others out there with a similar experience? Or can troubleshoot this one? Thanks!

It sounds like it could be the keyboard. have you replaced the batteries lately?
I know that if you hold down the mouse button of a wired mouse at power up it should eject the disc. That might work with the bluetooth mouse.

Erased harddrive with Disk 1 of Tiger but can't eject disk to install Panth

I have a iMac G5 PowerPC 8,2. I am prepping the computer to be used in my research laboratories by others. As described here, I have erased my hard drive. I put in Disk I of the install disk that came with the computer (Tiger) and used Disk Utility and did a 7 pass erase which took all of 5 hours. Now the screen is prompting me to Install. However, I would like to use my Panther disks to Install Panther rather than Tiger, but I can't quite figure out how to eject the Tiger disk, and put the Panther disk in, particularly without absolutely confusing the computer about which disk is supposed to be booting from. So, do I need to install Tiger first and then install Panther?
HELP is most welcomed.

molecularpenguin, welcome to Apple Discussions.
You have to install Tiger. You can't install an OS older than the OS that came on the Mac.
To open the disc drive, depress/hold your mouse on startup.

Can't eject disk!

Hullo all, have had a frustrating time in trying to eject an install CD from my wife's MBP.
Set out below are some suggestions obtained from the web......nothing will eject the disk.
I am trying to re-instal OSX Snow Leopard then move to Lion. Have sucessfully deleted the hard drive using Disk Utility from the instal disk, but now I find I am in a loop!! Try as I might, the disk is firmly implanted in the drive, obviously it does not show on the desk top, as there is nothing behind it!! ie all HD deleted.
Any way out? Of course there musty be, but I am tired and have had an agruement with my wife over this issue!!!
Frustrations!!
Using Terminal was of no help!!

The suggestions were.....
From time-to-time, removable media (including CDs, DVDs and others) can refuse to eject via the normal Mac OS X methods -- pressing the keyboard eject key; using the Command-E keyboard combination; selecting the item in the Finder and clicking the Eject button next to its name; dragging the item to the trash; or pressing the F12 key.
A number of methods can be applied to help coax media out of an optical drive in such a situation. Before applying these methods, however, note that busy disks (either startup disks or disks with an open file) should not be ejected and will not using any of the aforementioned standard processes. As such, be patient with a disk that will not eject immediately. Sometimes a disk continues to be identified as busy for several seconds after any contained files are not in use, and waiting a few moments then re-attempting the ejection is successful.
Use Disk Utility to eject The first and simplest method, if you only want to unmount a single volume on the disk, is to use Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities. In Disk Utility, simply select the volume you want to unmount and click Eject.
Hold Down the mouse button at startup In some cases holding down a connected mouse button at startup will cause a misbehaving optical drive to eject its media.
Unfortunately, this method will not work if you are using a Bluetooth keyboard.
Also, for Xserve users, make sure that the machine is unlocked (using the included allen wrench) before holding down the mouse key during startup.
Boot into Open Firmware and eject If you have a Mac that will not startup properly and has a stuck disc, try booting into Open Firmware by holding down Command, Option, O key and F key during startup. After booting into Open Firmware, type the command eject-cd.
Using the Terminal There are two commands that can be used in the Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities) which can be used to force disk ejection:
The first command to try is drutil tray eject. Simply type in this command and press return.
The other method takes a little more work but can work in instances where the first method fails.
Type the command drutil list into the Terminal and press return . This will provide a list of all currently connected removable devices. [ScreenShot 1-DiskEject] -- connect FireWire/USB drives for this
Use the command drutil tray eject 1
In the above command, the number "1" should be replaced with whatever drive number you obtained in the first step.

You may have tried all the suggestions mentioned in this article - Apple Portables: Troubleshooting the slot load optical disc drive
You will probably end up taking the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. If you have Apple Care, call them and let them deal with it.

Can't eject disk after rsync

I have an rsync script that runs from a Firewire backup disk. When it is finished running it prints:

If I try to eject the disk I get error message: "The disk is in use and cannot be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again".
Even if I close the Terminal window I still cannot eject the disk. I am forced to quit Terminal to eject the disk.
Is there a shell command to really quit the process so I can eject the disk?

You might check to see if rsync is still running in the background. Type ps -agx | grep rsync and then kill -9 PID of rsync. Or just type:
kill -9 `ps -agx | grep rsync | head -1 | awk '{print$1}'`
to kill it. Now see if you can eject the disk.
Or you can force the external drive to eject with hdiutil eject -force /Volumes/externaldrive where "externaldrive" is the name of your mounted disk.

Can't eject disk / can't open the eject device

I inserted a CD given to me by a client - into the superdrive on my powerbook G4 running OSx 10.4.7. The disk is not recognized at ALL. There is no error message, there is nothing. It's as if no disk is present. I cannot eject it. I followed all the steps listed here: http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/help/1/ as well as few more unorthodox ones like poking around (carefully!) with a paperclip to see if I could bump the disk out or something.
The last step on that link above is to type "eject cd" from the Open Firmware command line. I did this, and received the reply "can't open the eject device."
Everything seems to be running perfectly normally, but this CD will not get out.
Is there anyway to manually remove it without destroying the drive? I'm all out of ideas, and cannot find any reference to this problem anywhere.

So I decided to try opening up the laptop to see if I could open the CD drive and take the thing out manually. So, first, I shut down the computer. Then, I read this article describing how to open the laptop, and was deterred!

That was more than I'm ready to take on, so I started up the laptop again, holding down the mousekey on startup just for the heck of it - after it had been totally shut down for about 5 minutes, and lo and behold, my CD was recognized, readable, and ejectable.
The troubleshooting info said to try the mousekey trick on RESTART. But in this case I had SHUT DOWN all the way for some minutes and the pressed the power button to restart. I guess that made a difference for some reason.
Anyway, maybe someone will find this info useful some day.

I just got a new MacBook pro. I'm running Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Any time I try to unmount an external hard drive or eject a disk image from the Finder, nothing happens (either clicking the contextual eject icon or right-clicking). The items in question are not in use when I try to eject them. I'm only able to do so with Disk Utility. Any ideas? I've repaired disk permissions but the problem persists.

I am having similar issues with my user account. It also is the same in Yosemite.
Disc images, external hard drives etc dragged to trash (get eject icon) are simply ignored.
Pressing Eject button in side bar of Finder are ignored.
It seems to be a permission/account issue as:
- using computer under a different account doesnt have this problem
- transferring account over to another mac continues the problem on the new computer.
Log file seems not to have any errors.

FireWire 800 / Can't eject disk

First I was having issues with my external hard drive arbitrarily disconnecting and giving me the message that it was improperly disconnected. (When I hadn't touched it.) I read here on the forums and disconnected everything to reset the fuse. Waited 10 minutes and rebooted, then connected. It seemed to work, but now I cannot properly eject it. I get a message that it wasn't ejected "because one or more programs may be using it." But I'm not using it. What gives? Do I force eject it?

I just had the disconnect problem again. Any idea what's causing it? I have two firewire 800 cables, and I've tried them both...just in case one had a kink or a short in it. I just connected the drive, it came up, and I got the message asking if I wanted to back up to the disk using Time Machine. I said "decide later," and it suddenly disconnected and gave me an error message that the disk was improperly disconnected.

this is an upgrade from previous to current version. seemed to have started around the time yosemite came out.

I don't have a background image. I called Apple and they had no idea what that error number meant. I deleted preferences for FCPX still didn't work, then delted all preferences and set up a new user. It now works. Apple has no idea what is going on.

Yesterday I opened up the iMac and reinstalled the drive to make sure that it was not an alignment problem.   I still can not eject.   When I try to eject the drive makes noises like it is ejecting but the disk does not come out.
How do I solve this problem?

You have also tried resetting the PRAM as I suggestion in your other thread...?

2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

Superdrive stopped functioning/ can't see or eject disk

I've got two (related problems):
I performed a Repair Permissions on my HD and now the Superdrive no longer works. And, I can't see or eject the DVD that's in there (a Leopard install DVD), so can't restart with a bootable DVD either.
So, any ideas how to (a) eject the disk and (b) get the drive working again?
I've gone through methods suggested in this forum, such as starting up in firmware mode, resetting the PRAM (with or without switching the computer off and holding the start-up button for 15 seconds) etc.
System profiler does not see the Superdrive.
Is there a (non-damaging) method of retrieving the DVD with tweezers etc.?

Launch Disk Utility (Finder>Go>Utilities), select the ‘stuck disc’ in the volume list on the left & then either click the "Eject Button, Press Command+E or choose File>Eject Disk.

You need to have the disc in order to create disk image of snow leopard installer disc. What did your machine ship with? If something later than SL, then why? If earlier, then you can buy the SL installer disc and make the disk image.

I want to use my Macbook Air 2011 as an external disk for my iMac 2011. I connected the two with a Thunderbolt cable and when starting the MacBook Air I pressed "T" and it worked except with Office documents. Can anybody help?

I want to use my MacBook Air as an external disk to my iMac. I talked to Apple care and we solved it by connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the two computers. I then turn on the MacBook Air while pressing the "T" and it works. I can sit and work on my iMac and grab/change/save the files that are in my MacBook Air EXCEPT for the Microsoft Office files. I called Microsoft and they can't solve it. They say it might be a problem with the Thunderbolt cable. Has anybody have this problem?
Both computers are 2011 and they both have Office 2011.

For Word it says "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document, or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example, /)"
For Excel it says "the file could not be found. Check te spelling of the filename, and verify that the file location is correct. If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure hat the file has not been renamed, moved or deleted.
I tried this with many different documents, and I always get the same message.
