Can't eject Install DVD (Tiger)

While attempting (unsuccessfully) to install OSX 10.4 I can't remove the disk! When moving the icon to the "trash" , I get an "unexpected error" msg. (code =-36). Using the eject button accomplishes nothing. Even turning off and restart doesn't help. What can I do?
To elaborate: the install process-got to the original window, clicked on OSX Install,"continue" led to restart; but everything hung up with the blue background .

Was the install DVD you were using a retail version (black with silver X) or a machine specific version (gray), that won't work?

A few options: restart holding down the mouse button; launch Disk Utility in Utilities folder, select the DVD on the left and click on the eject button.

Open Terminal and type or paste:  drutil eject and press enter, quit.
Might just be a bad DVD or it could contain a different form of copy protection that the Mac doesn't understand yet. Use a older DVD's and try them out, if you still have the same problem then you can try as much as you can of the fix list here or take your machine in for service.

  • OS X Won't Boot, Can't Load Install DVD

For the last couple of days my mac has been really buggy, hanging, slow boot speed etc.
Until finally yesterday it simply failed to load into OS X.
So I tried the trusted unplug it for a few minutes, I zapped the PRAM, I tried safe mode, I did a hardware test on startup and that was fine. I've tried booting into the install DVD using 'C' and by using Options and selecting it on boot up menu. Sometimes it has limped into the OS where I removed everything in startup, repaired permissions and tried to verify the hard disk, where it said there was an error. I tried to get the install dvd to restart the computer and get into Time Machine but that just hangs, any ideas? I have a fairly recent backup, does Time Machine backup ALL my stuff? Music, Mail personal documents etc?
    Cheers
    A now bald Tristan

If Disk Utility has told you there are problems with the drive, you must repair them. You didn't mention trying that, you just said you tried to use Time Machine while booted from the install disk. Try booting from the install disk, running Disk Utility from there and clicking the Repair Disk button.
If the disk can't be repaired, you can try a more powerful utility, like [DiskWarrior|http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html] or [TechTool Pro|http://www.micromat.com>. If those don't work, you'll have to just erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch (or restore from a backup).
Note that, even if you repair the problems, files have probably already become corrupt, thus causing the problems you've been experiencing. You may end up having to reinstall anyway, even if repairs are successful, and it would be wise to be cautious with backups, as corruption could have crept into them.

I forgot to mention that there is a grey screen on startup also a flashing folder with a question mark. I have tried the solutions offered on these forum pages. I cannot get past the disk utility screen.

The MBP cannot find the OSX, and either the HDD or connector has failed.  If you can get the installation DVD to work, start the installation process and when the menu bar appears on the display, select 'Utilities'.  From the drop down menu, select Disk Utility>First Aid and run 'Verify' and 'Repair'.  If unsuccessful, a new HDD is in your future.
If you cannot get the DVD to function, then a trip to an Apple store is your best option.
    Ciao.

  • Why does macbook keep ejecting install DVD?

Was given an old Macbook with only a Windows XP OS on it.   Boot camp can't find mac OS.   Trying to install "Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD-ROM Full Version In Retail Box" I just purchased.  Problem is when I select the disk to boot from at startup it ejects itself and immediately loads the Windows.  What am I doing wrong or is this installation impossible?  It successfully reads this DVD & all other DVDs in the windows environment.
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - 1 GB RAM
I've tried resetting PRAM & SMC already with no success.
    Thanks in advance.

Have you tried starting up while holding down the Option yet? That should prompt the Startup Manager window.
To install from the DVD disc, startup while holding the C key down and inserting the install disc at the same time.

  • IMac Mini Just Ejects Install DVD

    Right!
So I have a iMac Mini - mark 2 model with the intel 2 core duo chip etc etc etc.
Anyway - I insert my leopard install disc - and the machine clunks a bit with the cd drive - and spits it straight back out at me!
I cannot boot into Tigar because I removed that installation and now dont have the tigar install disc so I am stuck atm. If I however install another disc to try to boot with - a scratched cd of tigar i own, that works....
Any reason why the machine is ejecting my install disc?!
    Thanks

Another idea besides the one above is to burn a copy of the original DVD installer disc.

Just bear in mind it has to be a DL disk. Macs seem to prefer the DVD+ variety, at least mine. I have successfully used Verbatim and Memorex DL DVDs.

  • Can't eject install disk

I used the install disk to reboot my computer. When I tried to eject I get an "applications or files still in use." I can't figure which ones they would be. Tried restarting several times. No success. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Maybe it is still starting up from the disc? Try holding the option key down next time you restart and choose the hard drive as the as the startup disk.

  • Can't eject a DVD / Can't close DVD Player

I was trying to view movie, just getting black screen and spinning wheel. Now won't let me eject DVD because it says "DVD Player is using it".  Can't close the application while spinning.  Any help would be appreciated.

Go to the  menu and select Force Quit.  In the window that comes up select DVD Player and force quit it.
Then you should be able to eject the disc normally.

  • I can't eject the DVD, It was jammed!!

How can solve this serious problem!!!!!

There are several ways that you might try. Is the disk icon visible on the desktop?
If it is, then dragging the icon to the trash (which will change to Eject) might work. A similar Eject button is in the Finder's sidebar.
If that is not successful and you can work in Terminal, you might try typing in the command,
    drutil eject
Another method is to hold down the mouse button (or trackpad key) at startup.
If these are unsuccessful, others have managed with the Eject button at the same time as a business card with some Scotch tape on it, but if your MBP is under warranty, you may want to avoid that, unless you can see the disk. It is not recommended that you poke about in the drive or insert any sharp objects.
If these fail, it might be necessary to visit a repair facility.

  • Dont' have an apple keyboard, and I can't eject the DVD

Help... it's stuck!  Not showing up on desktop or in Devices.  Is there a way to get it out manually?
    thanks!!!

Restart, holding down the mouse button. That should eject it. If that doesn't work, launch the Terminal app in /Utilities, copy & paste the below command into the window that pops up, and hit the return key. That should do the trick.
    drutil eject -drive internal

  • Can I use 2011 OS X Install DVD for a 2006 OS X macbook pro with OS X 10.4

I've got a 2006 Macbook Pro with OS X version 10.4.11 which is exceedingly slow and has parental control software on it that's wreaking havoc (its defunct Kids Gogogo, by the way).  I'm wonder if I can use the install DVD from my new 2011 Macbook Pro to do a fresh install on the old Macbook Pro.
    Thanks!

    No.
The grey disks are hardware model specific with their own drivers.
Just buy the $29 10.6.3  Retail Disk from Apple and Software update.
10.6.8 is the best for that machine due to it's age, don't go with 10.7

  • DVD froze while copying, can't stop and can't eject

Help. I was copying something from my DVD to an external hard drive when the copying just froze. I can't stop the copying for the past 1 day already. Can't eject the DVD cos the error msg would read that it is in use.
The external hard drive has been removed but the DVD is still hung at the copying. What should I do?
If i were to reboot and hold the eject key or mouse down will i risk losing all my info and photos and applications in my computer? I rebooted on my mac cube once and it completely went to factory setting again and I lost everything.
    Please help.
    Thanks

Welcome o Discussions - rebooting should not make you lose any data, hold the mouse button or the eject key down at the chime and the DVD should eject.
