Can't eject network volume after extensive browsing

Hi!
I have a problem that seem to be related to Mac OS X itself.
After browsing an AFP network volume for an extended time theres a quite big chance that the volume won't eject properly.
What happens is that the volume icon vanishes from the desktop but it stays in the side bar of a Finder window.
Even if one waits for hours it still won't go away and upon clicking on the volume in the sidebar a dialog comes up saying it can't be found.
I've tried doing "sudo -f umount /Volumes/volumename" but it doesn't do anything.
If one tries to do a restart the system gets stuck because it can't properly unmount the volume.
If one force a relaunch of the Finder via the "Force Quit..." menu option in the Apple menu, what happens is that the AFP Client process stalls. It shows up red in Activity Monitor.
I can reproduce this behavior on several different computers and on G5's browsing the volume sometimes leads to a Kernel Panic involving "vnode_put".
All machines are running Mac OS X 10.4.8.
The AFP volume I'm browsing when this happens consists of several folders that contains several .eps images. The file-structure looks like in this screen shot: http://home.mac.se/star-affinity/filestructure.png
Anyone else recognize this?
G4 Quicksilver 867 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The volumes are mounted via the Finder.
Ok, I'll try remove all the "dot" files I can find, but I can guarantee you it has got nothing to do with the volume not unmounting properly. :P
No, but seriously, I have made a clean install of the system on both machines and upgraded it to 10.4.8. I then duplicate 4 different .eps files that I copy from a third machine and I duplicate them and make a file structure somewhat like in the screen shot I link to above.
I then start file sharing on the machine with all the files and use the other to browse this machine. I browse from within the open/save dial of TextEdit.
I must say I wonder how any hidden files would cause a problem in this case.
I also wouldn't say that there are many issues with Tiger. It is this thing with network browsing and perhaps some kind of video driver issue that I've posted about here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3302238#3302238
Otherwise I think it runs great!
Can't understand why you're still at 10.3.9.
Anyway, thanks for trying to help!

  • Can't eject a volume

    Hi,
I'm occasionally unable to eject a volume such as a USB stick or a mounted disk image. I've checked the obvious things, there are no files in the trash and no aplications running - other than the finder! If I relaunch the finder, I can then eject the volumes, but that isn't very nice, and this seems like a bug to me. Anyone else experienced this?

Macdimitri: if you run activity Monitor.. and look for likely candidates.. doubleclicking on them will open a windowed text box showing all the files, devs and resources being used by a process... - copy-> paste to textedit window to reformat & search - looking for Volumes/ etc...
Looks a bit like this extract:
    dev/null
    /dev/console
    /dev/console
    apple.shm.notification_center
    *count=0, state=0x2*
    /tmp/com.apple.csseed.82

    /Volumes/116GB_1/.Trashes/502
    /Volumes/116GB_2/.Trashes/502
    /Volumes/DG1/.Trashes/502
    {Note that it has 'Trashes' , directories open on demountable (or, as with 'DriveGenius' readonly') drives that haven;t been referenced in quite a while...}
    - if then, with Finder/The App hilighted, you click 'disk usage' at bottom of ACt Mon window, a dropdown box appears and you can select each 'used/open Volume (it shows as a piechart...).
However, in this case, I believe that it's a Finder bug and I relaunch Finder [but it would be nice if the msg told you WHAT the thing was in use by...] - I know sometimes, it's just been because it was in some Apps 'recent...' menu.
    best,
    Wayne T
PS: I have also sometimes successfully selected 'shutdown/restart' and, after all the activity stops and Finder asks 'are you sure? I can eithersay 'no' - and the problem goes away .. or I simply disconnect and reconnect the drive, get the 'mustn't do! - data may have been lost msg' and can THEN reject the thing :and kill the restart! ) I DO know that single user fsck and Disk util have later failed to find a problem anytime I do this...
but: *it WOULD be nice if the msg said just what it was sposed to be 'in use by...* - maybe a process failed earlier and didn't reset some semaphore...

  • Automatic re-mount of networked volumes after reboot

    Hello.
Does anyone know if its at all possible to automatically re-connect network volumes after a reboot? Or if there's an app out there to do just that?
I really don't want to have every network volume (I have LOTS) in the dock...

Yes this works, but I have been unable to find out how to do this without opening the root of the volumes after the reboot. I tried "Hide Item" in the Login Items control panel, but to no avail.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • Time Capsule - Can't change network password after 10.6.3 update

Has anyone else experience an issue changing the Time Capsule network password after updating to Snow Leopard 10.6.3? If so did you find a work around? After the update I'm no longer able to change the Time Capsule network password when accessing it from Airport Utility. The utility will say that Time Capsule has updated the network password to the new one but when I check keychain it shows the old password. I tried resolving this by deleting the original keychain then changing it again in Airport Utility but it still shows the old password in the keychain and Airport Utility when I reopen the app.

    HI,
Checkthe vendor site for Snow Leopard compatibility. The developer may need to update their software.

  • Windows VPN clients can't use network servers after 10.5.1 upgrade

We have two Xserves, both formerly running 10.4.11. One is the OD master, the other a replica. The replica is also the VPN server, and is a DHCP server for the small number of IP addresses reserved for VPN clients.
The OD master upgrade went fine. I completely reinstalled the OD replica, set the replica up again, and set up the VPN server. It supports L2TP/IPsec connections only.
After the upgrade, Mac users running Tiger or Leopard can connect to the VPN server and connect to network services without any problems. Windows users can connect, but cannot actually USE anything on my office network. For example, if you try to connect to a web server either by fully qualified domain name or by hostname, the connection from the browser simply times out.
In the Windows command line I can verify that I have an active connection by pinging and using the tracert command (equivalent of traceroute on UNIX). Hostname resolution works, too. But nothing happens when you try to open a web browser, which is mostly what my users need to do.
It doesn't matter whether you're logging in with an OD user account or a local account defined solely on the VPN server. Same behavior in Windows.
I had to take an older XServe running 10.4.11 out of our data center, move it to the office, and set it up on the same external network connection. 10.4.11 server works, 10.5.1 doesn't, from the same Windows client, set up exactly the same way.
I've been through the hoops with Apple Enterprise support, who now tell me that Engineering kicked it back to them and told them they'd charge me $695 to get it fixed, because it's ostensibly custom configuration work. If that's true, why is Windows XP listed under L2TP/IPSec support on page 127 of the Leopard Network Services Admin guide? I don't want a custom fix, I just want it to work the way it's supposed to work. Or I want Apple to retract the claim that OS X Server is the best workgroup server solution for Macs and Windows.
Anyone else encounter this problem or know of a fix?

Had the same problems, started after i tried out the firewall in Leopard server.
Seems that not all settings are reset even after turning the firewall off.
To reset the firewall to its default setting:
1 Disconnect the server from the Internet.
2 Restart the server in single-user mode by holding down the Command-s keys during
    startup.
3 Remove or rename the address groups file found at /etc/ipfilter/
    ipaddressgroups.plist.
4 Remove or rename the ipfw configuration file found at /etc/ipfilter/ipfw.conf.
5 Force-flush the firewall rules by entering the following in Terminal:
    $ ipfw -f flush
6 Edit the /etc/hostconfig file and set IPFILTER=-YES-.
7 Complete the startup sequence in the login window by entering exit:
The computer starts up with the default firewall rules and firewall enabled. Use Server
Admin to refine the firewall configuration.
8 Log in to your server’s local administrator account to confirm that the firewall is
    restored to its default configuration.
9 Reconnect your host to the Internet.
This solved the problem for me...

  • CAN´T EJECT my disc after reinstalling os x

My hard disc crashed so I installed a new one
I tried to run it from installation disc but could not
    Finally I used time machine.
My system is restored, but now I cannot eject installation disc
Have tried already turning on computer pushing eject button, and also pushing
    trackpad without success.
    What else can I do?

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
I would recommend you reinstall OS X as well:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
I would also ask if you partitioned and formatted your new drive before installing your software?

  • Can't mount LUKS volume after recent update

Booted up today to kernel error message involving the crypto parameter not being set and there not being a valid LUKS volume. Right I think, massive amounts of cock are about to ensue in a typical Linux update with half the system breaking, but nothing we haven't seen before.
So I boot from a recovery CD, get into the encrypted volumes and update to see if anything b0rked was hotfixed by the devs. Hmm, nothing. It would appear that the cryptsetup params have changed once again, as they are wont to do every few years. We now have a new parameter that must be specified, crypto=:::: by default. Default doesn't work for me since I must have been in a highly delusional paranoid state when I created my partitions I think I used AES when I created it, with TripleDES/Blowfish/Serpent or something along those lines.
I can't seem to find any documentation about the parameter either, the cryptsetup website looks like monkeys with hammers got to it before the devs could fend them off and now the devs are lying on the floor in puddles of monkey semen while their SVN is being pillaged
Does anyone have a quick hint of what needs to be specified to get back into my encrypted root? I don't feel like dredging through half the Internets again, last time it took me a half a day to find out I needed to add the cryptdevice parameter

It would seem the cryptsetup in the initrd image is borked. When it fails to unlock the root partition, it dumps me into the recovery terminal. When I try and run cryptsetup manually from there, it segfaults with the message that it is missing libpopt.so.
I tried with the crypto=ripemd160:"aes-cbc-essiv:sha256":128:1032: parameter (which has to be specified after the cryptdevice= but before the root= parameters - thanks for documenting that ). These parameters are correct for my partition and should unlock it, but fails because cryptsetup is linked against libpopt.so. WTF is that? You'd want a statically linked cryptsetup for your initrd. Who was smoking crack when they wrote the mkinitcpio script? I'm not even sure I need the crypto flag if cryptsetup runs properly.

This problem hit me too. I have a static IP address set up on a server, I upgraded netctl to 1.10 and it took me a couple of hours to work out why, after the upgrade, my network would not work. The messages were not helpful as I performed netctl starts, stops and status, or ip link commands. In the end I got the server back up by using ifconfig, ip addr add, ip route add etc. Then I found this forum entry (Thank you siavashserver and jouke!).
While the solution can be found in the netctl manual, it is a little obscure. I think this deserves the status of a bug. I don't think a simple upgrade should allow a whole class of users (everybody with a static ip address) to lose network connectivity without warning.
Even the (upgraded?) /etc/netctl/examples/ethernet-static file fails to include ExcludeAuto=no, so the documentation (at least in this regard) is faulty.
When I performed the upgrade I was warned
    New optional dependencies for netctl
        openvswitch: for Open vSwitch connections
        ppp: for PPP connections
Is it possible to add a message there saying Warning! If you have a static ip address, this upgrade will destroy your network connectivity next time you reboot unless you add ExcludeAuto=no to your network profile?
jouke wrote:Add ExcludeAuto=no to your profile. As there is no way to check a statically configured IP address for correctness, they are excluded from automatic profile selection by default starting netctl 1.10. I am sorry for the inconvenience. From netctl 1.10 onwards, the behavior of netctl-ifplugd@ is documented in the man pages. For more information on ExcludeAuto= and Priority=, consult netctl.profile(5).

  • Mac can't find Network Volume

I'm connecting a Windows XP machine to my MacBook Pro via a wireless router. I did manage to get this working at one time but for some reason or other when I click on Networking in the Finder I get the message 'The volume for "Network" can't be found'. I can see the Mac all right on my Windows machine and can transfer files. Also I'm running VNCViewer on the Mac and I can see and operate the Windows PC OK from the Mac. I've checked the SMB/CIFS settings and they're all right. What has gone wrong?

Oh dear, I still have a problem connecting to my Windows machine - again it still sees my Mac OK. Also I had been using VNCViewer to operate my Windows PC remotely from the Mac and this could connect to it all right.
As the usual network connection didn't work - the alias to my PC was said to be faulty - I tried connecting to the PC as you suggested. I got the window saying it was connecting to the server and then the window appeared listing the folders on the Windows PC that I was sharing, as it did last time. However when I chose one the 'connecting' window brought up the error message "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code -41)".
I wondered if the problem could be that VNCViewer was still connected to the Windows PC so I closed this connection but it made no difference. Can you please suggest what the problem might be. Also is there an easy way to fix the Alias to my Windows machine in Finder?
    Thanks.

  • IPhone 4S can't find network even after reinstall of IOS

Since updating to IOS 7.0.6 my iPhone cannot find wifi networks. Tried resetting network settings. Then turned on wifi and no networks.  Next tried resetting all settings. This time cannot turn on wifi it is greyed  out. Went for the ultimate reset. Wiped the phone and did a fresh reinstall of IOS 7.0.6.  Restarted the phone from backup and wifi worked. I was able to connect to my home network. Within 15 minutes the phone started becoming sluggish and hot. I shut it down to cool off and when I turned it back on,  no wifi. If I leave wifi off the phone seems to act normally.  If I can get wifi to turn on the phone gets sluggish and hot. iPad and other computers have no problem connecting to wifi. Router is airport and is 3 years old.

  • IPhoto can't find server volume after migration to new iMac with 2 HDs

    Hi all,
I recently moved to a new iMac from an older Mac Pro. The new iMac has 2 hard drives (256GB SSD & 2TB HD) with all the programs installed on the SSD and the HD is used as the main file storage drive. iPhoto is installed on the SDD and its library of pictures are on the HD. My latest photo imports are working fine but the older pictures can't be properly opened, I get the following warning everytime I double click on a thumbnail:
Clicking on "Cancel" gets the following responce:
When I look at the info of the premigration thumbnails it says the pictures are located on the correct HD. The new pictures also show them as being in the same location but I'm having no problem opening the post migration pictures.
I'm thinking about trying out Aperature but want to get this linking problem sorted out first.
Any ideas how I should go about relinking "thousands" of pictures..?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Cannot see the correct network volumes

I have recently added a new user account with administrator priveledges when I try to use that account to mount network volumes then the only volumes I see are "Applications", "Library" and "Users". Apple knows about the problem because they address it on their website and in Mac Help. They state that it happens if auto login is selected, in my case this is off and their 2nd fix is to log out and log back in again. This doesn't help either! The other users don't have this problem.
Does anyone know who I can see the network volumes again?

I had that problem, but it was for all users, so I don't think what worked for me on that would be the same for you.
Might try dragging that user's pref folder to the desktop & relog...
