Can't enable disk use for restored shuffle

My shuffle stopped playing music in March. I continued using it as a removable disk. I tried the restore utility and it worked - now my shuffle plays music again. However the latest iTunes (7.0.1 and 7.0.2) has no checkbox to enable disk use for when the Shuffle is connected. The checkbox is there for a 5G iPod but not for the Shuffle.
So - now it works as an iPod but no longer works as a disk. What is going on here? How can I enable disk use?

iTunes 7.0.2 is still displaying that checkbox for both of our local Shuffles.
Perhaps you just need to scroll down to find it. If it's actually not there then I'd have to think that this is an iTunes question, not an iPod one, and might be better placed in those forums.

  • Can't Enable Disk Use in 2G Shuffle

On a Mac OS X that I had to restore previously. Music, but not playlists, were recovered. Haven't synced shuffle since and am trying now.
Getting the message that this iPod is synced with another iTunes library and asks to ignore or erase and sync with this library. I would prefer to create a new playlist and transfer from the shuffle since it is a compilation that was not preserved but from what I am reading I need to enable disk use under the "Settings" tab on the ipod, but I don't have that option for some reason. I have already made sure that prevent from syncing automatically in iTunes Preferences.
Not sure what else to do....any help is appreciated!

This isn't going to solve all your problems, but if you want to "enable disk space" then you probably need to upgrade itunes to 9.03.15 (or what ever is newest when you see this). That version has that feature under settings if you scroll down a bit. Good luck!

  • All music gone, transferred to 'other', can't enable disk use on iTunes

it seems like there are a lot of people with similar problems but nothing exact..here goes:
-doing research on my macbook and i get a popup from itunes saying that my ipod was disconnected improperly (i didn't touch it and i wasn't even messing around on itunes)
-ipod restarts and reconnects with itunes and i get another pop up saying that "itunes cannot read the contents of the ipod. go to ipod summery and preferences and restore.
-i would just restore it and reload all the music butttttt like an idiot..i dont keep my music in my itunes cause it takes up way too much space and i never used any external hard drive or anything to back my music up (again..idiot..i know)
-so i read though a ton of forums and posts and see that im not the only one that this has happened to and everyone is saying to put it in disc mode, go to removable disk, copy all the music back to my macbook, restore my ipod, and put all the music back on. i also read something about clicking on my ipod icon on my desktop and going under ipod controls and changing some names (i dont konw if that was jsut for windows or what) but i also dont have an option of ipod controls
-the problem with that is that i can put my ipod into disk mode but that does me no good because i can't enable disk use on itunes because literally..my only option when i plug in my ipod is to restore it. under devices on the left hand menu, it just says ipod..not ipod with a bunch of sub categories like music and playlists and stuff..just ipod.
-normally..i would just give up and restore it but when i go to the about section on my actual ipod, it says that i have 50GB of "other" so that means that stuff is definitely still on it.
    -so finally..my main question is:
is there ANY way to enable disk use on my iTunes without doing it through my iPod?..like i explained..when i plug my iPod in..that is not an option. and also..would i benefit from just bringing my laptop and ipod into an apple store and asking for help there or will that just be a waste of time?

The library on the iPod will have been damaged - hence the reason it appears empty, but the media files are still there taking up space and reported as "Other". Check out this post from Zevoneer for some iPod recovery options.

Some of the tools mentioned will require a working library, but I know from experience that you can use the manual recovey method when the library is missing or damaged. If you're struggling for space you probably need to go & buy an external drive before you start. Stick the iPod in disk mode. Hold Menu+Select > 6 seconds (resets iPod) followed immediately by hold Previous & Select > 6 seconds. You can now drag the contents of iPod_Control\Music to your new hard drive. You may need to reveal hidden files & folders. Once they are on your hard drive you can create a new empty library on the drive, then import the files you have reovered and consolidate the imported library so that the files are in a standard artist\album\## track structure rather that the iPod's obscured names.

  • Can't enable disk use on Ipod

I've recently upgraded my Ipod software to 3.1 and Itunes to 6. I've followed the tutorial to make the Ipod be a hard drive and when I click on Ipod in Itunes and go down to the Ipod icon in the lower right corner and click on that, it does NOT look like the screen on the tutorial and on the screen that I see, "enable disk use" is greyed out. I'm trying to troubleshoot why my synching contacts has allowed duplicates as well as loading in emails, which I don't want. But first I need to figure out why I can't enable disk use.

I can relate...sort of! My iTunes doesn't even HAVE that option. Can you believe it??? It's a brand new (although outdated) 40gb HP iPod, and I'm running HP version of iTunes 6. The manual says how I should enable (configure) the iTunes for use as hard disk--but it failed to tell me that no freaking icon would appear in that little corner. FRUSTRATED
    Sigh.

  • Enabling Disk Use For Car Stereo

    Hi there,
I'm wanting to connect my iPod via my Car Stereo's USB port, and control the ipod still so I can choose which songs to play.
I was told if I enabled disk use AND manually manage songs, it would allow me to do this, but so far, after a few seconds of reading the ipod, songs are played in a random order through my car stereo and I have no control from the iPod.
Please explain what I need to do.

I don't think so. Disk use allows you to use the iPod as a storage device - as far as I know you cannot play music while it's in Disk mode, nor can you take audio from the USB port on the iPod. (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!). Manually managing songs is the method for adding or removing content from the iPod, not a means of controlling it from a head unit.
Whether you can connect your iPod to your car and how it will work depends upon the car, model and year of manufacture. I used a Dension adaptor that plugs from the Dock connector on the iPod to the back of the stereo in my Mazda 3. I can choose any album, genre or playlist but usually I set the ipod to "shuffle all songs" mode and then plug it into the adaptor. Once connected, I can control track skip and track back from the steering column but I cannot see track information on the car's display. The iPod turns off and back on with the car ignition.
However, my sister-in-law has a Mazda MX-5, but her (Bose) stereo will only play from the first five playlists and that's it! Quite who thought that was a good idea, I cannot imagine! I believe this issue has been corrected on newer models.
So you see, two models from the same company give different results. Oh, and by the way, when I had the adaptor fitted, my supplier tried to sell me an FM transmitter type adaptor and I recall having a very heated discussion with them about this as they had already fitted the wired adaptor I wanted to a friend's Mazda 3.
My advice is that you see a car audio specialist who can then advise you (properly, I hope) on what options are available to you and your car. Look up Dension though, but treat with caution their claim about using USB. I've noticed that you and Kenichi have exchanged a few more comments while I'm writing this, so I now know you have a Sony head unit. It may not be able to display the iPod screens, but I'm sure Sony make iPod adaptors for their head units..
I still think you need to consult a car audio specialist, who knows what they are talking about. I think even your local Halfords may be able to help. It can't help to try them.

  • Can not "Enable disk use" on second computer

We have two computers. One was our main system (and had all my downloaded music) and a newer laptop with nothing but loaded CD's.
I am now attempting to transfer everything onto my laptop, (This is my primary computer.) but when I select "Options" the "Enable Disk Use" is checked but greyed out and can not be accessed.
Everything else works fine. The outlook syncs up and I can organize music. I just can't utilize the disk.
    Any advise?

  • Can't Enable Disk Use

I have tried changing my iPod options to Enable Disk Use, but whenever I go back to see the options it remains unchecked and my ipod drive won't show up in windows explorer.
Do I have a faulty iPod?. Also I have noticed that if I disable Art Work it still keeps showing album covers when I play music on my ipod, and when I go back to the options again it keeps the Art Work checkbox checked.
I have even restored my iPod see if that would do the trick but it's helpless. Can someone please help me out?

Duh. Pressing the "Apply" button at the bottom right corner of the iTunes window likely would have done the trick too.

  • Can't enable disk use ( 5th Gen 30g Video )

Everytime I try to enable disk use on my iPod, I hit 'Apply' and it begins updating. However, my iPod only briefly shows " Updating do not disconnect ", and my iTunes says it is still updating for a few minutes, frozen. Until, ultimately, an error pops up and says " Unknown error (-50) ". I just need to enable disk use. Is there any other way besides iTunes, which is obviously a piece of garbage?

i had that error all the time error -50....not anymore..

To resolve this problem, delete the UpperFilters registry value and the LowerFilters registry value. These values may cause access problems. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the UpperFilters registry value. This value is located in the following registry subkey:

  • Enable disk use on Classic?

My computer went to computer heaven with all its data and applications. I have set up a new computer and would like to sync the 9,000 items on my iPod Classic to iTunes. Unfortunately, it insists that it wants to wipe my iPod clean. Nearly all of the content on the iPod consists of my 600+ CD collection, which I fed, one by one, into iTunes.
The third party software I have found that promises to reconstitute my iTunes Library requires me to enable disk use for my iPod, but I can't find a way to do that. Help?

Summarizing if you don't like to read Instructions and manual.
Sandy, if you dont want to put the iPod in Disk Mode, and use ity as a portable hardisk, but just asking about
the function or benefit of "Enable Disk use"
Normally if I want to add just a song or two from my library or playlist to iPod, I would put the iPod in
    Manually Manage,
then ensure that enable disk use is tick
Drag the song/s from the library to the iPod icon or playlist.
So retaining all the songs in the iPod, this is much faster than Sync, and dont give problem like timeout and freezing iTunes.
    Have a nice day!

  • Enable Disk Use...

I have an iPod that is synced for my Mac side of my Macbook Pro. I did a fresh install of Windows and I am going to put my music on the Windows side as well. I use a program called PodUtil that transfers files from the iPod to where ever I want on my Windows HD. I've done this before and it worked perfectly fine, but now that iTunes has updated I can't find the check box to enable disk use for the iPod. It's not in the preferences, or in the summary panel under "Devices->iPod". Any ideas? Or other possible methods to get my music from iPod to PC.
    Thanks!

There is also no button to manage songs/files manually.

  • How can I uncheck "Enable disk use" in iTunes for my iPod? The option is grayed out, and permanently checked.

When I plug in my iPod Nano (6th generation) and launch iTunes, the device appears in the sidebar as normal, but the option to check or uncheck "Enable Disk use" in the Summary pane for the iPod is grayed out. Currently, the box is checked, so "Enable disk use " is turned on -- but what I want to do is UNcheck it and turn it off.
But nothing I've tried so far has successfully ungrayed the "Enable disk use" box. Help!
Question: How can I ungrey the "Enable disk use" option in my iPod's Summary panel in iTunes, allowing me to uncheck it?
Alternately, is there any other way to turn off "Enable disk use," using some esoteric workaround? Thanks!

Set it to sync automatically. Disabling that option isn't possible for an iPod set to sync manually, as it shows up as a disk as part of the sync process, and iTunes has no way of knowing when you're done syncing an iPod set to do so manually.

  • I disconnected my shuffle with Enable disk use ON . .  .

My shuffle is not being recognized by my Mac.  I think this is because I disconnected the shuffle without ejecting it, and I had Enable disk use ON.  What can I do to restore function?  Thank you.
    johnny

That's odd...  What happens if you plug that other device in the USB port again, then disconnect it and connect the shuffle again?  Might as well repeat the actions that made it work, to see if there are any clues...
It might be something about the USB cable's connection at either end.  Maybe the plug at the USB end or the iPod end is slightly worn, and not connecting reliably every time.  Be sure to try another direct USB port.
Also, if you have one, connect a self-powered USB hub to the Mac and connect the shuffle to the hub.  "Self-powered" means that it has its own power supply.  This will test to see if there is some kind of "lack of power" issue on the USB port.  If the hub makes it work reliably, you can try doing this Reset SMC procedure
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
which resets the Mac's "power management."  You can try the Reset SMC procedure even if you didn't use a USB hub as a test, to see if that makes a difference.

  • "Enable Disk Use" checkbox is grayed out, can't untick.

    Hi,
I just got my new iPod 30 GB video today! I've been reading these discussions, but haven't found an answer for this tiny problem of mine.
"Do Not Disconnect" constantly shows on the iPod screen when it's connected on the computer. Many have suggested ticking off "Enable Disk Use", but here's the problem: it's grayed out, and I can't change it, no matter what. I've gone through iTunes prefs, by right-clicking on the iPod in iTunes and selecting "iPod Options". My system seems to show iPod as a movable disk, but iTunes recognises it and I can easily put music into it, so I guess that isn't a problem (or is it?).
But how could I get my hands on the "Enable Disk Use" checkbox? It just isn't "tickable" now.
    Thanks!
      Windows XP

If you have your iPod set to manual update, the "Enable Disk Use" box will be greyed out and ticked by default, in that case use Safely remove Hardware icon or check this link: "Disconnecting iPod from your computer
    " http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61135
    For Info:
The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
    1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.
    2) Automatically update selected playlists only. With this option, iTunes automatically copies the playlists you have selected to the iPod when you connect it to the computer.
    3) Manually manage songs and playlists. You can also choose to transfer music to the iPod manually. This allows you to drag and drop individual songs and playlists from iTunes to the iPod.

  • Why can't I enable disk use on my Ipod touch?

I wish to use my ipod touch as an external hard-drive. I have watched videos on how to go about it and they show that there is a greyed out check box that must be checked. This check box does not exist for me. Why not? and is it possible to enable disk use?
MY ipod is an ipod touch 4th generation, 8gb, ios 6.1.6
    Itunes version - 11.1.5

You just be looking at instructions for the older iPods. None of the iOS devices such as the iPod touch have ever supported disk use. There are third-party utilities that purport to provide workarounds to allow such use, but I have no experience with any of them so I can't make any recommendations.
