Can't enter bios on KT3 Ultra2

last night I did a succesful bios upgrade to V5.7 on my KT3 Ultra 2 board.
System rebooted into bios default with no problems and I reset all the parameters as per the previous version.
Unfortunately, I set the FSB to 166 instead of 133 ( Gawd knows what I was thinking of at the time!).
On reboot after saving and exiting the bios setup, I was met with a blank video screen - no beeps came from PC on reboot.
The LED display is showing 1&2 Red, 3&4 Green.
Subsequent reboots show the LED display goes straight to this configuration on power up.
I tried resetting the bios back to the default, but I still have the same symptoms.
DVD , CD-RW and HDD light up during boot up, but nothing seen on the Floppy. Hitting Del or F11 has no effect.
I don't have another PC that will allow me to check CPU, Memory or Video card.
I've tried changing the Memory round and reducing to just one stick. Even ran without memory and still got same symptoms without any beeps during bootup.
At the moment the PC has been powered down and the clear-bios jumper left in 2&3 overnightin an effort to clear the bios.
Where do I go from here?
Now if I've knackered the mobo/bios, how do I stand installing a new mobo/cpu under the existing Windows XP installation on the Master Hard drive ? My last back-up is out of date and having just come back off hols the HDD is full of images I desperately need to keep!
System:
MSI KT3 Ultra2 series mobo; Athlon XP1800+; Matrox G450 Video Card; 512Megs PC2100 DDRMemory; Amibios V5.7; 350W PSU; ample cooling by way of extra fans; Windows XP Home SP1.
All help gratefully received,

I had exactly the same.
my 1900+ has always run at 166*10 with bios rev5.6
I flash to rev 5.7
I was trying 10.5*166 (the cpu has ever done this in the past) when the computer refuses to start.
the D-braket shows : LED 1&2 Red, 3&4 Green.
rest, unplung the bat, the card was dead
I've RMA the card the last week.
All my component works ok on my k7s5a
Is the reset not working with this bios or the bios has kill the card, I don't know !
PS : a friend of mine has a KT266A, the capacitors near the cpu break (the top was bounded). This trouble exist in MSI KT400 card too.

  • Can't flash bios on KT3 Ultra2

I am putting together a new system and I have an athlon 2400+ cpu.  I want to flash to bios 5.6 before I install windows xp.  When I run the flash utility it tells me that my chipset is not supported.  And I may have bios flash protection turned on.  I cant find any bios protection in the bios.  I am trying this using a windows 98 boot disk and the ram drive flash.

Thanks for the reply.  I wanted to get it flashed before I installed windows since I was doing a clean install.
I got it to work.  I downloaded the bios again from a different spot on MSI 's sight and that one worked perfectly.  I now have Windows XP up and runing and stable.  So far no problems at all. :D

  • GE70 2PC - can't enter bios after EC flash

So I've flashed my GE70 2PC with 1.506 firmware provided by MSI. Everything went smooth - it flashed without any errors and the laptop still runs.
However, I can't enter bios anymore. When the laptop boots I'm pressing DEL and it stops on a black screen with an underscore ("_").
I did the EC reset, I even left my laptop without any power supply (no batter and no DC) for the whole night and nothing.
I've contacted MSI and they sent me EC flashes from 1.500 to 1.5007 (without 1.5002). I've tried them all and nothing. Still can't enter bios, however, after rest the laptop boots Win 8.1 normally.
Any ideas/clues how to fix it?

No, I didn't update BIOS prior to EC flash. I also don't remember BIOS version.
However, it seems to be a common issue and MIS has a fix as I get this message from them:

  • Can I enter BIOS with a USB keyboard on a Thinkstation E20 with USB legacy disabled?

    Hi,
My Thinkstation E20 with XP SP3 won't boot up with an external HDD connected to its USB. Tried various things:
    1. Changing boot sequence so that the USB-HDD is behind the internal HDD
    2. Excluding USB-HDD from the boot order
    3. Using a different USB-HDD
But all this won't work, after the motherboard boot, I get a black screen. The system boots normally with the USB-HDD disconnected.
So as a last option I would like to disable USB legacy support, but I am worried that I won't be able to use the USB keyboard anymore to enter BIOS. As the Thinkstation has no ps/2 port this could be a real issue down the road.
Microsoft info is that on most system you should be able to use a USB keyboard during the motherboard phase even with USB legacy disabled, but I can't find if theThinkstation can do this?
    Does anyone know/tried it?
    Thanks for your help,
    Andre

    welcome to the forum!
you'll always be able to use the keyboard to access the BIOS.   after all, if a system could completely lock out the keyboard then you'd have no way of unlocking it.
what port(s) have you tried connecting the USB HDD?   if you've only tried the front, try a port on the back and see if anything improves.
what brand/model USB HDD are you using?

  • All kinds of problems... can't enter bios, etc

Hey all, hoping you can help.  I only have one system at home which is now not working, so pardon me if I'm a little slight on details.
I got a K8T Neo m/b with an athlon 64 3000 and 1gb of Kingston RAM.  It was all acquired as a bundle from Mwave.com, who I've done lots of business with before, and always had good luck.
I threw it all in my old case and hooked everything up.  P/S is a 350W by the way, and seems to work fine.  I have a 60gb western digital HD and a cd writer- have tried various IDE options and nothing seems to make a difference.
Here's the problem.  The thing boots, I get the logo screen.  I hit tab to clear the logo and try F11 for the boot setup or del for the BIOS.  Niether works.  It loads the Promise SATA driver and says No BIOS loaded or something of that sort.  Here it says hit TAB to enter setup, which leads me to what looks like a RAID setup which then freezes.  No big deal, I'm not trying to use RAID anyway.
so if I let it run past that point, it goes back to the POST screen and says Checksum error, and something else (sorry can't remember, should have taken notes).  At this point it lists the POST options; delete to enter BIOS setup, F11 for boot menu, F12 I think to reset bios, somethin like that.  Anyway, none of it works.  At this point (below the checksum error note) it also lists two options- F1 to enter options (BIOS options I assume) or F2 to do something else (forgot again, sigh).  Anyway, the only key that does anything at this point is F2, which then tries to boot from network, where it hangs indefinately.
Have tried clearing the BIOS with the jumper and by removing the battery.  Major problem seems to be that I just cant enter the bios.
Thats all I can get it to do.  I'm really ready to toss it out a window, quite frankly, so any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi
It's not a wireless keyboard with the F key at top, which you have to press before the F keys work?
Other than that just keep clicking the bottom right DEL key, mine does much the same to start with and does not enter bios setup till after the TAB key screen ( just let that pass) then the next post screen is the SATA disks on mine, then it enters the Bios setup.

  • Can't enter bios afer update. Raid "Cam read disk error"

I've been having really bad performance out of my HP a6863w machine.  I've tried everything to speed it up but no luck.  I finally decided to update the bios to 5.13 on my MSI MS-7548 (Aspen) motherboard.  The bios seemed to flash properly, but when it powered off to reboot, I now get an error message and can't enter the bios using any F keys or ctrl-home combo's.  It appears that the system was changed to RAID but I can't enter the Bios to change it back.  I get the following:
    "RAID option ROM Vesion 3.0.1545.55
    Cam read disk error!"
and then nothing works.  I've tried everything F key, ctrl-home, ctrl-i, pulling the CMOS battery and reset, and nothing work.  The screen right before the RAID screen looks like it is hardware diagnostics but then says:
"Default BIOS settings have been loaded due to BIOS update or checksum issue."
and then something about pressing F10 or allowing the system to boot.  However, F10 does nothing.
    What can I do?

The best way is to use a 98 boot disk with the ramdrive. XP boot disks don't work.
Windows OEM bootdisks load basic tools like format, etc to a ramdrive. Watch the last line it will say "The diagnostic tools were loaded to your drive E:" or similiar.
You will find alll the tools there, you will also copy the BIOS file and the flash utility to the RAMDRIVE and run the flash from that.
Go here http://www.bootdisk.com/ and download the 98SE OEM boot disk.
Get the latest bios and flash utility on another floppy and keep them handy.
Boot with the 98Boot disk created by the utility you downloaded from bootdisk.com.
As mentioned above, the disk will create a RAM drive and name it. If all your drives are NTFS, it will likely be called C:\ but be sure and do a "dir /p" at the prompt to see the contents, if you see files like "ramdrive.exe" and "Format.com" etc. then you know thats the RAMDRIVE.
Remove the 98 floppy and insert the floppy with the BIOS and flash utility and then copy the files to the RAMDRIVE, you can then launch the utility and flash from that point.
I recommend taking notes on your current BIOS settings and then just select "Load Setup Defalts" option to reset all the settings to the original, and set the BIOS to boot from the floppy then save and restart with the 98floppy.
After the flash is successful, imediately re-enter the BIOS and put your settings back the way they were.
If you don't do this, you take the chance of losing options that were disabled prior to the flash, it can carry over to the new flash.

  • Can't enter BIOS & Optical output help...

    MSIFXA990-GD80
Firstly, I can't enter my BIOS via keyboard (USB or PS/2), I've tried repeatedly pressing the DEL key at startup but all that happens is I enter the boot manager! I can enter BIOS via CLICK2BIOS but due to needing to reformat and reinstall Windows i'd like to be able to enter BIOS via keyboard in case I need to?
Secondly, I can't seem to get my Optical out working in 5.1 when running a game (BF3). The only place my PC (Windows 7) will actually recognize 5.1 is here:
When I highlight Dolby and click test, It does perform the test and It does include the surround speakers.
After I ran Live Update 5, I seem to have lost a load of options in the Realtek HD Audio manager, see here:
Before I ran Live Update 5 I had allsorts of graphic EQ options here. I only ran the update as I couldn't get 5.1 to work but now it seems I have less options than before. I have of course selected Surround within my game but the AV receiver just remains on 2 channel.
Any help appreciated with this :-)

you can use latest realtek drivers from: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/990FXA-GD80.html#/?div=Driver&os=All
    or from realtek site

You could never enter bios with F1 on an MSI board as you need to press del key instead. If still not able to enter follow Bernhard's advice or try clearing cmos as fastboot is off by default: >>Clear CMOS Guide<<

  • Can´t enter bios setup/system does not boot

    Hi,
I got a problem with my new KT6 Delta MS-6590 board.
Sometimes after a prog is crashed and its better to restart windows, my System doesn´t boot anymore. It hangs after searching RAID-Disks. The Broadcom Dialog does not appear and the System stands. When I try to reset and would like to get into the bios setup I can´t enter it. The Delete Key do not work. After clearing cmos and going on with default values the systems works correctly until the next crash.
    The bracket says "Boot attempt"
Whats the problem please help  ?(

  • New Build Issue - Can't enter BIOS with P35 Neo-F Motherboard

    Hello,
I've just built a PC using the components in my sig. This is what happens when I power up my PC:
1.The power LED lights up on the case.
2.The fans in the power supply and, the graphics card, and the CPU start up.
3.I'm not sure if the hard disk starts up. I don't see it's LED light up on the case.
4.The screen goes black then displays a message from the graphics card's BIOS. Just reporting it's specs.
5.The motherboard displays it's splash screen, inviting me to press <TAB> to switch to POST or <DEL> to enter BIOS setup.
6.Then I hear a single beep from the PC internal speaker.
When I press <TAB> or <DEL>, nothing happens.
I have read about BIOS incompatibilities with new chips but according to the MSI site, the most current version for model number 7360 is 1.7 and it lists the E8500 next to it (http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1215&maincat_no=1#menu), so I assume compatibility is not an issue. So, why can't I access the BIOS?
    Thanks for any help.

Would the CPU need to be compatible with both versions of the BIOS?
It needs to be compatible with your current BIOS Version. If it is, it will be compatible with all Versions released after that automatically.

Should I give the shop a copy of the BIOS and the forum tool for flashing the BIOS?
Yes, you should provide them with a copy of the BIOS.  The Forum Flashing tool will only work, if you have an operating system installed, so unless you let the people in the computer shop install a Windows based OS for you, they can't do anything with that application.

  • Aspire V3-551 Won't boot, can't enter BIOS

A friend gave me her daughter's Aspier V3-551 to repair. When booted there is the Acer splash screen and then just a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I cannot enter BIOS with F2 even if I hold it down while powering up. No change if I remove the battery and run on AC and no response to F12. The HDD has what looks like good data on it. If I pull the battery and the HDD and power up I get the PXE boot screen that complains of no network followed by "Press any key...". Pressing F2 and many other keys causes the message to repeat (as expected), but pressing F12 causes no response at all. I believe this is a scrambled BIOS problem, but am not sure what is the best way to recover. If I create a bootable USB thumb drive, will I be able to get the machine to boot from that drive and not look for a PXE server?I could disassemble the chassis and pull the CMOS battery, would that help?Is there any other way to initialize the BIOS?Suggestions appreciated and "Thanks!" in advance.

Thanks for the comment. Didn't pull the battery, but found a great site for teardown info: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/how-to-disassemble-acer-aspire-v3-551-8469/ Spent a lot of time trying to find the right BIOS flash files, espically those containing .FD files mentioned on other sites. Used the CRITICAL Mode entry of Fn + Esc (with no battery) without a USB drive connected just to see what would happen. BIOS came back after restart! Set it to Defaults and that problem solved. BTW, this BIOS was only v1.02 which is not even mentioned on the Downloads support page - much confusion over what BIOS version applies to what machine, even with serial number entered. Now have corrupted Windows and tried Factory Restore with Backup using Alt + F10 during boot. That failed, so I ran the full recovery process (had manually backed up user's files earlier) which seemed to work. More trouble after the 20,000,000 Windows Updates tried to installed and failed. Cleaning that up now, but at least BIOS is back (and F12 option works as desired).

  • 990FXA-GD80 V2 - can't enter BIOS setup

This board has mostly been working fine. I have a FX-8150 in it, and I switched out the fan for a Coolermaster. Now, it boots, but when I try to enter BIOS setup, it hangs on "Starting setup..." (or something like that) at the bottom of the screen.
I have tried clearing the CMOS (including unplugging) a couple times. Not sure what else to try...

Quote from: flobelix on 21-June-13, 03:30:41
Try with the board outside case on a non conductive surface and basic setup (one mem stick, cpu/cooler, psu, vga). Remove all drives and USB devices.
That worked. Thank you. I am able to enter the BIOS setup. But will it still work in the case?
EDIT: I did some searching and this is probably a case shorting. I noticed that one of the brass standoffs had come loose and was still attached to the screw when I took it out. I'm guessing that's what caused the short. I'll be more careful with the standoffs and see if that helps. Thanks for your help.

  • Can't enter BIOS or upgrade to Windows 10

I've spent all day trying to upgrade to Windows 10, but have just received one error after another. I've tried Windows' update troubleshooter (which says that it fixes an error, but I still get errors trying to update to Windows 10) and doing the update via MediaCreationToolx64.exe, but nothing seems to help (although sometimes it changes the error code).  Finally I decided to do a clean install of Windows 8.1, and then maybe I'll try to update to 10 again. So I created a bootable USB of Windows 8.1 (using Microsoft's mediacreationtool.exe). However, I'm unable to enter the BIOS on this computer. When I start it up, there is no text telling me what to press to enter the BIOS. Googling tells me that F2 is the normal key, but that doesn't work (with our without FN). I've tried all of the other F-number keys with and without FN, but none of them work. I've tried updating the BIOS using this: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/ideapad-u-series-laptops/ideapad-u410/downloads/ds101011 However, when I try that, I just get the message: "ERROR 182 - BIOS image is equal or older than ROM!" How can I do a clean install of Windows 8.1?

Thanks! The recovery button worked.  I then did a clean install of Windows 10 directly over Windows 8.1, and it worked fine! I know all the websites say that you need to do the update first, and then do a clean install, but I didn't, and now Windows 10 is working fine and says that it's activated.

  • Satellite Pro 6100: Can't enter BIOS and won't boot up

I've got a Satellite pro 6100 notebook, en I was trying to make it boot from an external USB HD. When I enabled the second hard disk option in the BIOS it stopped booting all together en I can't even enter the BIOS Setup anymore. All I get is the "TOSHIBA in touch with tomorrow" screen with the icons to select the preferred boot method manually after that it's just blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.
Holding down the ESC or F8 key before powering on usually results in fast beeping sounds.
Holding the tilde (~) key before powering on results in the screen remaining blank (not even the toshiba splash screen appears) and slow beepings sounds.
Appart from that I can't really make her do anything at all.
I tried resetting the BIOS by disconnecting the CMOS/RTC battery (hoewever it's called) from the motherboard for a while, with no results.
Powering on without the internal HD results in a blank screen with an "IDE #0 ERROR".
I can always shutdown by holding down the power button, don't bother about the external HD, it gone I don't even want that to work anymore.
    Suggestions?

    Thanks for helping me out,
With this laptop I only use both hard disks internally (not both at the same time ofcourse). As long as I can't boot normally or can't get into the BIOS I won't bother using USB.
About USB Booting: I believe the newest BIOS have USB booting built-in, and you can specify it in the boot order menu, or so I read. My BIOS is obviously not able to do this.
Back to the problem: what CAN I do in this situation:
ESC to get into the BIOS :: doesn't work
F8 to specify boot order :: doesn't work
Holding down the tilde (~) key before power-up :: beeping, this is the BIOS update mode right?
    I found this thread:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=1402&tstart=306
    Sounds familiar.
So I guess I'll try a BIOS update, I found information about that on the Toshiba site, the only problem is that I don't have a floppy disk drive, but it should be possible with a CD too, any suggestions are welcome.
And could anybody tell me something about that resume mode (if you think that's relevant).
    Thanks.
