Can't erase or burn CD-RW

I have burned Memorex CD-RW discs in my Imac Intel Core 2 Duo 24" machine in the past but can no longer do so. When I go to erase CD-RW disks I have successfully used before in this machine, they no longer can be erased. When I try to burn to a blank CD-RW disk that have been used before in this machine, I get an error whether I try to burn from the finder or from iTunes 10. I can read these CD-RW disks, and I can erase and burn DVD-RW disks that I have used before.
Why would I no longer be able to burn to CD-RW disks?

I have tried to erase the CD-RW in Disk Utility. The application appears to go through the process using Erase Data on Disk: Quickly or Completely. The disk disappears from the list of disk on the side bar and I get the message, "Preparing to erase optical media" in the progress bar for a while. Then the progress bar disappears, and the disk reappears on the side bar in my list of disks.

  • Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K05 superdrive can't erase or burn DVD-RW

I've noticed lots of users are having issues with their slot-loading superdrives and I'm wondering if anyone's issue matches this one:
I can successfully read and write: CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-DL and can READ an already burned DVD-RW, but I can't erase a DVD-RW that's already burned nor can I burn a blank DVD-RW. Inserting a blank DVD-RW results in ejecting the disc after about 30 seconds, no error messages, just ejects.
I've tried Maxell DVD-RW and Memorex DVD-RW. Same results.
An already burned DVD-RW (from a different burner) mounts fine on the desktop, but when I try to erase using Toast 7, I get the following message:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
    Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
It recognizes that it's a DVD-RW, but treats it as though it were a DVD-R.
Using Disk Utility to erase results in a more generic error message:
Optical Erase failed with the error:
    Optical Erase Failed
I had an online chat with an Apple rep who had me reset the PRAM, no change. Then we tried from another account, no change. Their next recommendation was to re-install the OS using Archive and Install, which I have my doubts about doing. Failing that, they recommend bringing the iMac in to a service store to possibly replace the drive. But based on what I've been reading about all the different superdrive problems users are having, I'm reluctant to even do that for fear of having an even worse problem with a different drive crop up at some point.
Has anyone out there had this exact problem and found a solution yet?
Seems like a simple firmware update for the drive could fix everything but I'm unable to find one.
Here's the drive specs from the Apple System Profiler:

    hi there--
instead of just resetting pram i would try booting to
open firmware holding apple-option-o-f and then type
    in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command restarts the computer. see if that
works. if it doesn't then try resetting the smu.

there is a remote possibility that this is software
related, but it almost never is, and these things
are much more likely to resolve your problem than
doing an archive and install, and they are much less
hassle free. let me know if that works. [ 8 ) ]
OK, I booted into open firmware and did all the resets. No improvement. In fact, now I can't even mount some DVD-Rs that I had successfully burned before and mounted before. The drive has always been a little touchy with some discs, especially DVDs, but now seems to be even more hit-and-miss. CD-R and CD-RW reliably mount but DVDs have me worried. It took a long time for my OS X install disc to mount and display the window.
I think it may be time to take it in to Apple and replace it. I may also consider purchasing a Firewire burner with a tray!
Just wondering also if PatchBurn would fix this by creating a new profile or if this truly is a hardware issue. http://www.patchburn.de/
    Thanks for your help.

  • How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc which has ample remaining free space? After preparing the new video for burning and clicking on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject.

How can I add new content in iDVD to a DVD-RW disc with a video previously successfully recorded on it? (The disc has ample remaining free space.)
After preparing the new video for burning and clicking in the File menu on Burn to iDVD, I get a window saying the disc's already recorded and that I can either Erase or Eject. My assumption has been that iDVD would automatically find the free space and continue with the new recording from there. I'd be grateful if anyone can shine light on this.

There are, but not with a DVD written as a movie disk. It must be closed when completed, or it doesn't work.
Apple's built in Burn utility also automatically closes any data CD, DVD or Blu-ray disk you burn. Doesn't matter how much space is unused, you can't use it. You'd have to use a more advanced disk creation app, such as Toast Titanium. I then have the option of choosing to write the data as a session:
I can keep doing this until the disk is full. If I've written five sessions to the disk, when I put it in the drive, five CD/DVD icons will appear on the desktop since the OS will treat each session as if they are separate physical disks. At any point you choose Write Disk when writing a group of data, that means you're closing the disk, and again can't add anything after that. So if I had written two sessions, and the third was Write Disk, it's over. I can't put anything else on that disk.

  • Can i erase data from my cd with cd burner?

    hi everyone
i am using msi cd writer ,i wrote data on it with help of burner but now i want it to use as audio cd instead of data cd can i erase this data ?and use the cd as audio cd?

CD-R can only be written once.
CDRW can be erased and rewritten.
You can "hide" data on a CDR, but you cannot reclaim the space.
Imagine your CDR as a sheet of paper and your burner as a pen. You can write on the paper. You can also cross what you wrote, making it unreadable. However, you cannot reclaim the used space.
So, if you are using CDRs, the answer is no, you cannot rewritte in a different format on it.
If you are using CDRW, yes.

  • Does someone know when our movie project and finally our iDVD project is done, can we erase the clip that we had imported in iMovie without danger?  Or we have to keep the clip in iMovie until the DVD are burn?

Does someone know when our movie project and finally our iDVD project is done, can we erase the clip that we had imported in iMovie without danger?  Or we have to keep the clip in iMovie until the DVD are burn?

    Hi
Most processes in Non destructive Video editing is based on that the raw-material is safe and intact. So by trashing it most things can or will go wrong.
So e.g. in iMovie project - there is NO Movie - just a small text document refering to Your raw-material, audio files and photos (within or not in iPhoto Library) on how they are to act together to Play Your Movie.
And by changing any of them the Movie project will be affected or destroyed.
reg. iDVD there is also a link back to iMovie - Most famous to set of the iDVD BUG !
To do that - one starts a new iDVD project and add movies etc. Then find something i one movie in need to be adjusted. Closing iDVD and returning to iMovie and doing this. Then when back to iDVD it will notice and ask You to Up-date or Cancel. Neither works. The iDVD project is harmed. All Chapters now point to Chapter One and more strange things happens.
the medicine I use - I start a brand new iDVD Project and re-do it and hopefully not fine any more to be fixed in the movie.
This indicates the strong link inbetween iDVD and iMovie and I would not touch anything in iMovie till DVD is Burned and Ready AND Plays Well !
    Yours Bengt W

  • How can I erase burnfolders in the side-bar?

How can I erase burnfolders in the side-bar?
                                                                       W.W.

    You can also try this.
Go to your home folder>Library>Preferences - delete/trash the files labeled "com.apple.finder.plist" and "com.apple.sidebarlists.plist" and then restart your computer.  Empty the trash once you reach the desktop.  The untitled dvd folder & burn icon should now be gone from the Finder sidebar.
In addition to removing preference files, if you don't want to use the sidebar for managing CDs and DVDs you can go to the Finder preferences and uncheck the option to show CDs, DVDs, and iPods in the sidebar to prevent them from appearing there in the first place.

  • Unreadable DVD RW disk being ejected - can't erase/format it

    Hi,
I was burning some files onto a DVD disk from a network drive, when the network went down. The DVD was thus left in some intermediate state, and now I can't seem to format/erase it so that I can reuse it!
Whenever I insert the DVD into my mac mini (OS X 10.5.6) the drive churns the disk for a bit and then spits it out. I don't get a chance to let the Disk Utility wipe the disk for reuse. Annoyingly I'd only just bought the bloody thing and it was my first attempt to use it. I used another disk from the same pack I bought and that worked, so it's not a disk incompatibility.
Is there some key modifier I can use to stop OS X trying to read the disk so that I can let Disk Utility get at it? I already tried changing the "CDs and DVDs" default behaviour from the preferences pane.

You now have a nice, shiny drink coaster. Cheap!
Unfortunately, optical disks, even RWs, can be so badly corrupted that nothing can figure them out well enough to even erase them. They are quite different from magnetic tapes or disks, which can be erased no matter their condition.

  • Toast can't erase

I have issue with Toast 6 Titanium (6.1.1). I cannot erase a DVD+RW disk. The problem is related with a specific disk that I have. My other DVD+RWs can be erased without problems. Before the issue, I was able to erase all my disks.
Have you experienced this problem? Have you been able to solve it? It is related to the last version of Mac OS X (10.4.5)?
    iBook G4

I have noticed that Toast 6.1.1 isn't working well in 10.4.5. That's one of the reasons I went back to 10.4.4. I would get errors that the Lead-in or Lead-out was not written after the whole burn process was completed. Coaster.
    But Jam works great.
I have posted to Roxio groups and tech support. No answers.

  • How do I erase an older Western Digital 1TB mirrored hard drive? Newer drives can be erased via a WD Utility, but the WD site says to "ask Apple" about the older ones.

I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.5.  The hard drive is approx. six years old - a Western Digital for Macs, mirrored with 1TB on each half.
Because the drive is "infected" with Time Machine backups that I can't erase, I have removed all important files from the drive and now want to wipe it clean.  I've done this with new drives, via the WD Utility that came with the drive, but the older drive doesn't have such a utility.  The WD site only has a protocol for PCs.
I find nothing on the Apple site itself.  Can you community members help??
(I've tried various ways of deleting the Time Machine backups, but nothing has worked.  The instructions for that, which I read on a community support site, were too advanced for me to understand.  A Mac IT guy tried to erase the backups, but he didn't know how either.  So that is why I'm erasing the drive totally.  I've learned my lesson and have a dedicated Time Machine drive now.)

    Please be clear:
This is a mirrored RAID that you use as the startup disk?
You now have a different startup disk and wish to erase the RAID mirror?
Do you wish to continue using the RAID for backup?
If all you want to do is erase the RAID to get rid or the Time Machine backups, the use Disk Utility to erase the mirror disk mounted on the Desktop.

I unfortunately just got my IPhone 4s stolen.I thought I had the find my iPhone enabled but I didn't because I cannot locate the phone when I sign in ICloud.I have a password on the phone but i'm not sure if I turned on the option where the phone resets if you incorrectly put the password more than ten time. I immediately called my phone company (Verizon) and reported the phone stolen. So I know whoever took the phone cannot place calls or use the phone. But can they still access my data on the phone if they manage to unlock the phone?  If so how can I erase all data on the phone so the thief can't access my personal information? is there any other way other than Find my IPhone to wipe off the data on the phone? I really don't want my personal information such as pictures, text messages, notes and social networks profile available to a stranger!!? Help please!!!

        Hello thewrongway,
I'm sorry to hear about your phone!  I understand the need for an active device. You are able to activate an old device and process an insurance claim for your iPhone 4s within 60days from the incident date.  Keep in mind if the old phone is not a smartphone and you currently have unlimited data that feature will fall off.  If you have a tier data plan no changes will be made.  Please let me know if you have any additional questions.  Thank you.
