Can't Expand Version Set

Just installed Elements 13. The "Expand all items in Version set" is not working for me. What am I doing wrong?

Thank You Barbara. I knew it was operator error.

• Elements 13 expand version sets

Just installed PS Elements 13 and cannot expand version sets. I can go into Editor and open the original of the version set, but when I save that photo, it replaces the existing one in the organizer. Geez.

Well, I discovered the problem. Under "View", you must check "Details" to get the version set expansion arrow.

• Moving Version Sets in PSE 3

I edited photos and saved in a version set. Then I moved the photos to a different file location. If I browse in PSE 3, it shows the version set in the new location. But if I browse on My Computer, the original photo did not move (only the edit).
How do I grab the entire version set to move to another folder? If this is not possible, how do I seperate the version set? (Everytime I try to do this, it wants to delete the edited pictures first.)
I have spent many hours trying to organize all my old pictures and I'm almost ready to give up and just use the freebie Microsoft Photo Editor and My Pictures :( Thanks for your help!

This is a bug in the "version set" feature in PSE 3.0 that is fixed in
version 4.0. Did you right-click on the version set and then choose
version set->expand version set (or is it reveal version set?). You can
then choose each individual picture in your version set and move them
one at a time.

• Modifying Version Set and/or Stack Attributes

My Photoshop Elements (PSE) 5.0 catalog has many version sets and stacks.
Contrary to my expectation, I recently learned that that edits to the top photo's attributes (e.g. Date, Caption, Notes, Tags, etc.) did not translate through to the underlying photos of the associated version set or stack. As a consequence, subsequently moving a different photo to the top of a stack or version set can lead to loss (or at least displacement) of these important attributes.
Is there a way to get PSE to automatically copy attribute changes through to the underlying photos or at least to ask the user if (s)he wants edits to translate through the version set or stack? If this feature is not currently available, I think it would be a significant value-added enhancement to the product.

Users tend to use software differently and to have differing needs and preferences. Barb's point is valid in that, should Adobe provide the ability to assign attributes 'through' a version set or stack, the feature would warrant a user prompt or preference setting to acomodate user's differing needs and preference.
Exceptional software, like PSE, anticipates and supports user needs in an efficient and predictable manner. Version sets, almost by definition, can be expected to have the same date, time, tags, captions and notes. Stacks - perhaps to a lesser degree.
Forcing users to perform tasks in a specified sequence (e.g. adjusting attributes before version sets or stack generation), or to expand stacks or version sets to assign attributes through to underlying photos, seems unnecessarily tedious and inconvenient. For instance, expanding version sets and stacks forces users to aboard current search criteria.
Anyone who has imported large batches of scanned negatives or slides which contain no meaningful metadata (with PSE set to auto-correct red-eye and to recommend stacks) knows how easy it is to generate version sets and stacks BEFORE the user begins the process of attribute assignment or correction.

• PSE 12.1 not saving in version set

I have been successfully using PSE 12.1 on Windows 7 since last August. However I've started having problems in the last 2 or 3 days. I start the Organizer and select a photo to edit. When I "save as" I get one of two results. In the first case it saves the photo in the proper folder but it does not create a version set with the original. In the second case, the editor locks up and eventually I get a message saying the editor is not responding and windows is looking for a solution. Usually it saves one photo as in case one above, and then fails to respond on the second photo and I shut it down. Over the past 2 days I have uninstalled PSE 12 and reinstalled 3 times, upgrading to 12.1 each time., but I get the same result. Any ideas what is causing this?
Update: I've given up. Uninstalled for the last time; purchased PSE 13; everything working with new version.

This is odd . Did you tried with clean preferences. To clean preferences go to "Edit Menu>PReferences>General" and click the button "Reset Preferences on next launch". Relaunch PSE.
This is not new, already several posts on this forum and one bug report:

See:

Today's state of the problem seems to be that this happens not only with saving in version sets in PSE12, but also on simple saves with 'include in the organizer' checked.
It happens on previously converted catalogs, not on new ones.
It happens when the process 'elementsautoanalyzer.exe' is running (you can 'kill' it from the Windows task bar, but you must do it every time you start the organizer. Deleting or renaming this file seems to work.)
This seems also to be a problem for people using the 'watched folders'.
So, to prevent the problem : kill the elementsautoanalyzer.exe every time you start the organizer.
To recover the edited files not included in the catalog, do a manual 'get photos and videos' from the already gotten files.
It's important to do so, otherwise the edited files won't be catalogued and be missing if you do a backup.
If necessary, use the automatic stacking feature by visual similarity to stack your originals with your edited versions, since you can't create version sets.
If you can share your experience on the above feedback link, please do it and add your vote.

• Version sets are gone....!!

Hi there!
My computer just crashed last week - apparently got a nasty virus infection that went through the firewall. Consequently I had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the whole system (Windows 7). Of course I had a back-up of all my pictures so this is not a problem. The pain is that I have to reinstall all the softwares...! Today I reinstalled Photoshop Element 8 from the installation CD I have and directly after I imported all pictures again in the organizer. Everything went fine though of course it took some time as I have many pictures. The problem now is that all my Version Sets that I had have disappeared!! Pictures belonging to the same Version Set are there but they are not included in a Version Set anymore. I use to have Version Sets for different formats of the same pictures, for instance jpg, PSD and NEF, as it is very helpful. This is very annoying as I had plenty of these Version Sets and they were helping me big time in my work flow.
Do you know if there is a way to get them back? I would me the most thankful if you could help me on that one!
All the very best

Leunammeod wrote:.I guess that I’ll have to recreate manually my version sets. Is there a smooth and “less” painful way to do it in Element 8?
.You can't recreate version sets, they are only created when you save an edited file ; but you can create stacks, either manually, or by using the help of the 'automatically suggest photo stacks' feature based on visual similarity.
The integrated backup/restore you’re mentioning is the one included in the file menu of the organizer (Ctrl+B) isn’t it?
Yes.
Actually all my hard drives are pretty full but I do recall (I may be wrong) that Adobe was offering (free of charge or not?) the possibility of having an online backup. Is this backup compatible with the integrated backup/restore process or does it work differently? For instance does it allow me to backup catalogs too?
Adobe did offer the photoshop.com service (not for european users...) for such online backup, but this is being replaced by Revel. I don't use those, so I'll let more competent users comment about this possibility. Online backup for big catalogs of images seems to me problematic due do transfer speed.
I looked for the catalog as you told me (help menu/System info) and it seems to be a folder containing several files. If I want to make a backup of my catalog manually (via Windows explorer) do I have to save the whole folder or just the PS8DB file included there? How do I restore catalogs if I choose this option?
Yes, it's quick and easy to copy the catalog folder manually, or you can include that folder in your external backup software scheme. If you restore both the catalog and the image files in the original location, no problem. You can even move or restore the catalog folder manually : if you double click the file catalog.tly in that folder, that will work as well. The content of the catalog (a 'list' to simplify) is always valid even if the catalog is moved. The advantage of the integrated backup is that it can update the contents of the catalog even if the original file tree is restored on another drive or master folder. Suppose you want to restore all your files to a new drive : the catalog copy would hold the old picture files location and would show all of them missing. You'd have to use a 'reconnect' function to update the catalog (never easy !).
Is the metadata you're talking about equivalent to the XMP sidecar file?
Yes, the xmp sidecar file system is used to store that same information for file formats which do not support writing that info in the metadata section of the file itself : especially for raw files, whereas jpegs can hold that information.

• Expand Multiple Version Sets

I just upgraded to PSE9 from PSE6. I am doing a little housecleaning and need to move many many many files. Is there a way to select a whole bunch of pictures and expand all the version sets in there? For instance, if a find by a date range, then find all version sets, now I would like to 'select all' and be able to expand the version sets. Not Possible??? Doesn't seem to be. Any ideas how I can use a workaround?

It’s not a bug
How do you know?
Your expectations are simply unrealistic.
That's not the answer. I know there are a number unrealistic expectations with the organizer. Let's see if it's the case here.
What's the problem ?
It's very different from the original subject, not about expanding multiple version sets.
It's simply about trusting, or the limits in trusting in the 'file/move' function of the organizer, which is a subject you'll have seen discussed many times, and for which I have never seen a clear answer. On the other hand you have seen hundreds of times the advice to use the organizer move feature instead of doing this outside of the organizer. Where is the truth? It's not because I have personally never met a problem with the move feature that it can work in all circumstances, in all versions and OS.
The reported behaviour is that the algorithm plays nicely and ends without warning nor freezing after skipping many files. This is very unusual, but it seems to be repetitive in a given environment (we don't know the details of...) This hints rather at a 'bug' in the algorithm rather than a compatibility problem with the OS or an available RAM or disk space, but we can't know without searching further.
You'll note that the move feature is a basic and fundamental argument in favor of a database management system : it's not anecdotic, so it is just natural to expect it does work properly.
If there are limits in the conditions the move feature can work properly it's realistic to expect to know them. And if those limits are known to the developers, something should be done to warn the user and avoid program crashes or false results.

• Can no longer save edited images in version set with PS 10.

I've been using PS 10 for many months and have been able to save my edited raw images as jpgs in version sets. I can no longer do this. The edited images save on the hard drive but not in the PS organizer...thank you for any help you can offer....

Ok, you need to know what you want to do with your image. For example if it's for the web the best way to save to jpg is.. File-Save for Web, then you will see a Box with four pages,, you can choose: Original which is going to be your original image,... Optimized which is a Lower quality version. 2-Up and 4-Up.
when you click on 4-Up Tab you see your original image in the top left, Also you have your image in 3 different windows with different file size and speed. You can click on each window and inside the Preset in Top right choose JPEG. and you can change the quality from Low to High or Drag the Quality Slider for different quality.
NOTE: when you do File-Save For Web,, you are going to have a flatten Image.. you will loose your Layers.
It is always better if you shoot your images In higher Res, such as 240, or 300 dpi, and later Down-sample the image to a lower quality for the web. If you have the original image at Higher Res, First you should Go to Image Image-size For Example Height 1200 Pixel. If you go ahead and save the file for the web then you don't need to change the Resolution. don't forget to Sharpen your image when you Down-sample

I have recently purchased a hybred 750GbHDD as an upgrade for my MAC Book Pro (Intell Version) I have a boot camp partition to the original 500GB HDD. How can I expand both partitions to fit the new drive?
I have tried bootcamp and have had no luck due to the fact that boot camp doesn't see the additional HDD space of 250Gb. What am I not doing?

Ouch, well there is a problem.
This is the stack of partitions on your old drive
EFI (hidden)
Lion (50GB say)
Bootcamp (50GB say)
Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
This is the same stack on your new drive imaged from the old one.
EFI (hidden)
Lion (50GB say)
Bootcamp (50GB say)
Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
Emtpy Space (100GB say)
This is what you want
EFI (hidden)
Lion (100GB say)
Bootcamp (100GB say)
Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
EFI has to be at the top of the drive and Lion Recovery has to be at the bottom of the drive.
And you only have four partitions.
You can't move the Lion Recovery Partition or Bootcamp partiton, however you can expand the Lion Partition into empty space below it. (but can't delete or move the Lion Recovery partition)
Your Duplicator duplicated perfectly, too perfectly Likely would work with same sized drives/partitions.
This is what your going to need to do.
You need to move the Bootcamp partition to a blank external drive using WinClone and disconnect. This is so you have two backups of it. (one on your old 500GB drive)
You will need a drive enclousre or IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable for the older 500GB drive and option key boot from it. (some enclosures can't be booted from so check first Other World Computing is good place to ask)
Download the free Carbon Copy Cloner, grab any new files off the new 750GB internal drive to the old 500GB your booted from.
Open Apple's Disk Utility and Erase with Zero option the entire internal 750GB drive and let it rip, this will map off as many bad sectors and improve reliability.
Now use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the 500GB Lion + Lion Recovery Partitions to the internal 750GB, it will "fix" things and place Lion Recovery at the bottom of the drive where it belongs, give all the extra space to OS X Lion.
Next your going to have to follow WinClones instructions to restore your Bootcamp, likely you will have to recreate the Bootcamp partition first (in Bootcamp) to the size you want and then clone. Likely Winclone may "fix" Windows to recognize it's in a new larger partition now. I don't know you'll have to check as I haven't used it.
When Bootcamp creates the partition it will place it near the bottom next to the Lion Recovery Partition.
As you know you will have to re-validate Windows with Lord Redmond or it expires as you changed the hardware.

• Photoshop Elements 13 (Mac) Organizer - Can't save file with version sets.

I have spent many hours now trying to get Elements Organizer to save Version Sets when I've edited a photo. I've tried more or less every little thing you can find online without any luck. But just moments ago I found that if I move the file to my desktop everything works just fine. I then tried to edit files in a few other folders (also imported to my Organizer) and found that when ever the folder was named to something with a nordic letter in it (å, ä, ö) then I couldn't save my file with version sets (option greyed out) but if I moved that same file to another folder, well then everything worked as it's suposed to.
I'm using the trial version of PSE 13 for Mac (Yosemite) and the full version is ordered and on it's way. But if this problem can't be fixed, I need to return that order and buy some other photo editing program.
Can anyone help me with this problem? Is there perhaps a solution to this?
Please, any help is much appreciated!

I'm using the English version (as more or less always - Swedish is rarely an option). The thing is that I have never encountered this problem before in any other software I've been using, and certainly not in Aperture that I've been using up until now.
I name my photo folders with a date and a few words, for ex. "2014-12-31 New Years in Stockholm" (but I normally write in Swedish). I use this method so that my folder that contains the original photos will be easy to find in even without any other software than Finder (or Windows Explorer if I connect my external drive to a Windows machine). I could change the name of all of my folders, or at least all of the folders with a name containing one or more of the letters Å, Ä or Ö to "force" PSE to work as it should, but why? This really shouldn't be a problem.
I was hoping that their was a simple option or something like that that could fix this issue, but I guess not.
If this problem lies in the software itself I will have to return it and look elsewhere (but where? Lightroom is certainly not an option if Adobe can't handle "normal" letters and Aperture is discontinued in a few months).
Thank you for your reply!

• I can't stack photos (previously in version sets) imported via "Upgrade PSE Catalog". Why not?

I am currently using LR 3.6 on a Windows 7 OS/ HP laptop. Previously, I organized my photos using PSE 9 Organizer. When I switched to LR 3, I selected the option to upgrade my PSE Catalog to bring my photos into LR. LR imported all the photos and keywords/ratings but not my version sets or smart albums. I understand LR doesn't have version sets so I was willing to manually restack my photos but now LR is not giving me that option. Any pictures that were previously in a PSE version set are showing as unstackable (all the stack options are grayed out) even if they are located in the same folder on my hard drive. I'm having trouble finding anything on the web that addresses this issue. Any help/direction would be much appreciated as my catalog is rather cumbersome at the moment.
Thank you,
Sierra

If dj_paige's suggestions don't help, check to make sure that Lightroom thinks both photos are in the same folder. When I converted from PSE 8, I had some photos in version sets in the same actual folder that LR thought were in different folders whose name differed only by case (e.g. "MyFolder" and "myfolder"). Thus, LR refused to stack the photos upon catalog conversion.
You can check this by selecting each of the suspsect photos in turn, right-clicking, and selecting Go To Folder In Library.

• Can you please help solve my sudden problem saving photos in version sets?

Saving edited photos in Version Set
Ever since I have owned the excellent Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0, I have saved edited photos in a version set with the original. Now, in spite of the 'save in Version Set' box being ticked, they are saved separately. When the edited photo is saved, it says 'imported from hard disk'. It has never said this before.
When the photos are imported from the camera, they are saved in Adobe/Digital Camera Photos/code provided by photoshop (eg 2006-03-10-1632-38). Under properties/history it says imported from Panasonic DMZ-TZ3. This has not changed. All the saving arrangements appear to be unchanged.
Photos (thousands!) have been successfully edited and saved in a Version Set. Under properties/history it says 'edited version' and 'imported from Panasonic DMZ-TZ3'.
Suddenly, photos that have been edited and should have been saved in a version set, now say under properties/history nothing about being edited. They say 'imported from hard disk'. In other words they are being treated as a new photo.
I really hope you can help me to solve this infuriating problem. Please ask if you need more information.
I work on a PC with Windows XP
Michael

Michael: are you still using an old version o0f PSE (e.g. PSE V4)? Problems similar to the one that you described are relatively frequent in old PSE Versions ( I was suffering a lot from them)..... and there are quite seldom in newer PSE versions. Unfortunately, I do not remember which PSE Version became much better in this area (was it V5? or V6?)
If using an older PSE version and encoutering often the problem: consider to migrate to a newer PSE Version..

• How to save different files when can't save in version set?

For some reason I can't save my edits unless I uncheck Save Photo in Version Set. But I have some edits that I havein several versions. If I try to Save by changing name to indicate a version, Photoshop Elements 9 asks if I want to replace a previous edit, which I don"t. How can I save different versions of one file in I can't check Save Photo in Version Set? I am using a Mac.

If you have used Lightroom as an external editor on these images and not initially opened from Organizer, the file path will be broken.
See tips for working with version sets.

• Expand/Collapse All Version Sets

PSE 10, Is there a simple way to open all the Version Sets with one set of keystrokes, and having them stay open. I have a lot of version sets built up over time, and I would prefer not having to open each one individually. When I tried doing that on a small batch, as soon as I changed to a different batch of pics, all of the Sets I had opened, promptly closed. The View > Expand/Collapse All Stacks does not work on the Version Sets.

Hi Surya
Create a new HTML region at the top of your page, using No Template and use this as the Source:
<script type="text/javascript">
function showHideAll(displaystyle)
var hideIMG = "/i/htmldb/builder/rollup_plus_dgray.gif";
var showIMG = "/i/htmldb/builder/rollup_minus_dgray.gif";
var k;
var r = document.getElementsByTagName("DIV");
if (r)
for (k = 0; k < r.length; k++)
if (r[k].className == 't12Hide')
r[k].style.display = displaystyle;
var i = document.getElementsByTagName("IMG");
if ( i )
for (k = 0; k < i.length; k++)
if (i[k].id.substr(0, 5) == 'shIMG')
i[k].src = (displaystyle == 'block') ? showIMG : hideIMG;
</script>
<a href="javascript:showHideAll('block');">Show All</a>
<a href="javascript:showHideAll('none');">Hide All</a>The image names and className (t12Hide) are based on my test page - change these as appropriate for your own page (you may need to do a View Source on the page to check these values).

• PSE13 Organizer: stacks and version sets do not expand

Converted three catalogs from PSE12 show the stacks/versions sets overlay symbols in organizer but there seems to be no way to expand the stack/version set. All the menu choices for doing this are disabled.
Anybody else seeing this? Any workaround? Any ETA besides PSE 14 or higher for a fix?

I had the same issue. It took me a lot of time playing with the interface before I finally figured out the problem. Even though, when you double click a photo (single view) from within the default grid view, you "do" get the option to expand a stack or version set (not greyed out). However, it does not work. My frustration with that is that since it was not greyed out you would naturally expect it to be functional and it is not. In grid view the option is greyed out however that caused confusion as well since this option works in Elements 12 default view. So, one assumes it is a defect. Right? So the solution is to switch the grid view to detail view (view -> detail). Once you do that then the expand function works as expected. This should have been explained as I believe it is a change in functionality (user work flow) from earlier versions. I did try to find wording about this in the help file but no luck.
