can you use airport extreme as a bridge with a netgear  wndr4500 router.
This is extremely unlikely. The AirPort Extreme can provide this function with other Apple routers, but as far we know, it is not compatible with products from other manufacturers for this purpose.
Suggest that you use a Netgear product for the best chance of compatibility.

  • I can see my airport extreme network, but none of my devices (vista, ipad, iphone, ipod) can connect to it. Why?

I have set up my apple aiport extreme after moving and I can see the airport extreme light is green and I can see the airport extreme network name, but when I select the network, the device cannot connect to it. No error message appears, the device simply is in a constant state of trying to connect to the network.
I can easily connect to the non Airport Extreme network.
    Can anyone help?

Try factory resetting, it often helps when changing location.

  • Can I use AirPort extreme to play musik on my sterio

Can I use AirPort Extreme to play music from Itunes, on my sterio? Or is it just AirPort Express.?

Express only. Only the Express has a audio jack.

  • Can you use airport extreme 802.11n for files backup

Can you use airport extreme 802.11 for files back up and sharing

You can if you connect a hard drive that has been formatted correctly to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups for this type of setup, but you could store regular files this way.

  • Can i use airport extreme as wifi range extender in conjunction with a Linksys AE4500 router

can i use airport extreme base station as wifi range extender in conjunction with a Linksys AE4500 router

If you are trying to "extend" using wireless only......Apple tells us that their "extend a wireless network" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers.
So, in order to use your AirPort Extreme as an extender, you would need to have another Apple router.....an AirPort Express, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Extreme as the main base station.
I haven't tested the specific Linksys model that you have, but have owned and worked with several other Linksys models, none of which were compatible with Apple for the purpose that you ask about....so I would have to say that it is extremely unlikely that your model would be compatible with the AirPort Extreme.

  • I can't get airport extreme to work with iPad

I can't get airport extreme to work with iPad

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. We have two distinctly different printing problems. Let's try tackling them one at a time if you don't mind.
In order for the iPad to print to a printer it would either have to be AirPrint-enabled or you would need another solution, like PrintCentral for iPad or Printopia. Unfortunately, I don't believe your Canon printer is AirPrint-enabled. There aren't many printers on the market that currently are. All of them, that I am aware of, are HP devices.
Now for the PC. I would go with what you have already suggested and that is try disabling either the Windows or third-party software firewall. Which version of Windows is it running? Just in case it's XP, here are two excellent iFelix articles on how to do so with or without using Bonjour.

  • Help for a technically challenged person / can't setup airport extreme

I have tried everything and I can't get it setup.

    Ok, I'm back!!
Airport setup was successful. (excellent!! but I have seen this page before)
Please wait while your AirPort Extreme restarts......tic tok tic tok tic tok...5 min later
Airport was unable to find your Airport wireless device after restarting.
An error occurred, close the config window & try again. No Luck.
So....i swap internet wires (back to the belkin)
    long wait.......................belkin won't start??...hum
unplug belkin & unplug modem.........hum, still won't start...Turn off wireless connection on IMac / turn it back on.....still not working....the only device listed is belkin54g
Scratching head now.....go to another computer....won't connect (this is not good)
Idea! Unplug Airport Extreme from the power.
Its magic!! IMac instantly comes back along with my other computers....Internet is working as it should....It was the AirPort Extreme that took over the identity of the belkin (even the name...kind of like identity theft)

  • Import Gen2 AirPort Extreme config into a Gen5?

I plan to upgrade my Gen 2 Airport Extreme (A1143) to a Gen 5 Airport Extreme (A1408) by exporting the configuration from the A1143 to the new Airport Extreme. If I can do this it would be a beautiful thing. Otherwise I will have to re-enter all my settings, a daunting task giving the number pieces there are in my network (Airport Express, switches, wifi clients, telephone appliance, yada, yada). My concern is that the A1143 configuration doesn't map to the newer device because of differences in features.

There is almost nothing to the 5th gen. settings. You can do a 5th gen. setup in 5 minutes assuming you are using AirPort Utility 6.1. If you go this route, then I'd choose the optional new-network setup approach on the first page of the setup sequence. Apple's automatic setup approach is so simple that its easy to make a silly mistake. For example, I used this approach at the start. Under it, Apple names the network. Not liking the name I changed it to what I wanted. Things got fouled from there. I reset the router and took the second approach. It's much more like a "normal" approach to setting up a router, but still very simple.
If you need some settings not available via 6.1, then you can use AirPort Utility 5.6 (even under Lion or Mt. Lion). To use 5.6 on Mt. Lion, you will need to copy an already installed elsewhere copy of this version into the Applications or Utilities folder. If you put it in the second, then be sure you change the name so you don't overwrite version 6.1.You also can extract 5.6 from a Snow Leopard disk using Pacifist. Either way, 5.6 can be upgraded to 5.6.1. After obtaining 5.6 (or +), be careful not to update it to 6.1. Apple will upgrade it to 6.1 if you are not paying attention. Save a copy of 5.6 (or +) somewhere else for safety.
I don't think there is a way to import your existing settings into a 5th gen. If the settings you need are not availale in 5.6, then you may have a problem.

  • Can't get Airport Extreme and Express to join same network

I recently bought an Airport Extreme so I could create a wireless network with my Airport Express. THis way I could browse the internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time. After spending hours trying to get both AP Extreme and Express linked together in a WDS network, I have failed time and time again. I have no problem setting the AP Extreme as the WDS main. My iMac and laptop connect to the AP Extreme just fine. I can set up the AP Express to stream music via iTunes to my stereo without problems. But to get them working together in the same network has got me stumped.
I've set the AP Extreme as WDS main and Express as WDS remote. They are both set to same wireless channel. Where am I going wrong? Is it a 802.11n/802.11g compatibility issue?
    I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks.

    adrian,
I have done this a dozen time today with different base stations like yours.
The only thing I can think of is this:
    1. With the WDS Main, make sure you have the address of the Remote in the box.
    2. With the WDS Remote, make sure you have the address of the Main in the box.
    3. Make sure both base stations have the same network name in the wireless tab.
    Then restart both base stations.
Let us know what you find out.

  • How can I use Airport Extreme just as a file server - no wifi

I'm setting up a new Apple environment for an invalid music buff.  Here are the components, all newly purchased.
    MacBook Pro
    Airport Extreme
    Airport Express
I was handed a G-Drive with a large iTunes file collection on it.
The user will have Comcast as his network provider and he already has a Comcast wireless router, so none of the Apple devices will need to be used as a wireless router or base station (assuming I understand what Apple means by a "base station").
The Airport Express has the primary function of acting as an AirPlay device, feeding an analog music signal to the user's hi-end audio system (Denon integrated amplifier, Thiel Loudspeakers).
The Airport Extreme has the sole function of acting as a network file share for the G-Drive.
The MacBook Pro will operate iTunes and will get its music files from the network shared G-Drive and send it to the AirPlay device, which will feed the music signal to the hi-end audio system.
I am able to get the Airport Express to simply act as a wireless client on the Comcast provided wireless network.  The MacBook Pro is also on the network and can see the Airport Express as an AirPlay device and send music to the audio system.
What I'm having problems with is getting the Airport Extreme to simply act as a file server on this LAN.  It can either work in bridged mode and just be a wireless network client, or I can readily run an ethernet cable from the Airport Extreme to the Airport Express, or even to the Comcast router.
I tried to connect the MacBook Pro to the Airport Extreme with an ethernet cable and get it to "join an existing network", but it refused to recognize the Comcast provided network.  All it could see were some networks in homes nearby.
I was hoping that if I just ran a network cable between the Airport Extreme and the Airport Express, that it would just get a network address over DHCP through the Airport Express.  Nope.
So I'm stuck.   How do I get the Airport Express to simply act as a file server for the G-Drive on my LAN?

+Can I use the Airport Extreme base station as a wired router, with wireless disabled for the time being?+
Sure, but it will probably take just as much time...a few minutes....to turn the wireless off than simply change the name on the default wireless network to your personal choice.
The AirPort Extreme is pre-configured to create a wireless network when it is hooked up to a modem. All you need do is assign a name to this network and establish a password. If you don't want to do this, you can turn the wireless off and use the device as a wired only router.
AirPort Utility, the application that is used to setup the AirPort Extreme has a simple guided step by step process for you to configure the device the way you want.

  • How can I connect airport extremes using a wired-switch connection and have roaming capability?

My goal is to have 2 airport extremes and 1 timecapule connected via an ethernet switch so that I can enable roaming. I have no problems connecting them wirelessly where I create the wireless network on a primary airport wireless then add the others "extending" the network. However, if I attempt to do the same thing with a wired connection everything stops working (no connections from any airport). Here's the topology I'm trying to achieve. I believe my problem relates to the switch and the fact that I am serving up DHCP from a separate server. Is there a way I can achieve this (or similar) type of configuration? Thanks in advance.
BTW, I have read the various documents on the roaming network topology  but none seem to be a match to this.

To answer your question, yes, if I _only_ have the main "create wireless network" airport connected/wired to the switch, everything works correctly.
    OK, got that.
Also, if I have each of the 3 airports/timecapsule "create wireless network" using the same ssid name and passwd/protocol, everything works correctly (but of course, no roaming under this scenario
Sorry, you have me confused on this one. When the AirPorts are all configured to "create a wireless network", use the same SSID, security and password, and all AirPorts are in Bridge Mode........that is the exact definition of a "roaming" network.
Not sure what you mean when you say "no roaming" in this configuration.
Also, if I have the main "create wireless network" configured and have the 2 other airports "extend the network" and _not_ have them connected via the ethernet cable, everything works correctly (wireless airport interconnection)
    That is correct.
However, if I plug the 2 other "extend the network" airports into the switch via ethernet, all connectivity shuts down.
This is not a correct setup. The "extend" setting on the AirPort assumes that they will connect using wireless.  If you then try to connect an Ethernet cable to an AirPort that is expecting a wireless connection, that will result in a big feedback loop and effectively crash the network.

  • Can't make Airport Extreme router work with non-Apple device

I am trying to help a friend who has a PC (Windows 7) that has a wired Ethernet connection to his girlfriend's Airport Extreme router.  He wants his Internet-capable Blu-Ray player and her IPad to wirelessly access the Internet via the Aiport Extreme router, with both the Blu-Ray player and the IPad's Internet access protected by WPA-2 encryption (both devices are capable of WPA-2).  How do I do this?
Here are the problems we've run into:
    1)  The Airport Utility for Windows (5.6.1) has been installed on the P.C., and we've used it to update the firmware on the Airport Extreme router.  However, after we followed the Aiport Utility instructions to set up the network, all the router wanted to do was look for an Apple device.  His girlfriend and her IPad are out-of-town right now, so the only device within range was the Blu-Ray player, and the router did not see it.  Not only that, but almost all the menu options on the Airport Utility were "greyed out" (unusable), except for "Configuration."  I am very troubled by the fact that the Airport Extreme router seems to want to look only for Apple devices.
    2)  In order to get Internet access for his Blu-Ray player for the time being, my friend pushed the "reset" button on the Airport Extreme router, and he can now use his Blu-Ray player for Netflix and other Internet streaming options.  However, the Blu-Ray's wireless Internet access is an unencrypted connection, and the Airport Extreme router is displaying a flashing amber light -- not a good situation.
    3) Although I know his girlfriend could access the router via her IPad when she returns, she is French-Canadian, and her IPad operates in French.  I happen to know some French, but I have enough trouble trying to understand  wireless networking terminology in English without having to try to figure out the equivalent terms in French.  Thankfully, the Airport Utility for Windows on his P.C. is in English, so that's what we've got to use to solve this problem.
I have profound respect for Apple products, but I'm a Windows/Linkysis router guy, so that's why I'm stumped.  Can anybody out there help me?

Which model of the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) do they have? What is the version of firmware that you updated it to?
By default, the AEBS will broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a network name (or SSID) of something like Apple Network NNNNNN. This would be similar to a Linksys when first powered-up.

  • Can't get airport extreme to connect to xbox

Hi! As you can tell from my post I am really new at this, i will try to explain as best I can:
I have an Airport Extreme Base station(AEBS) connected by ethernet to a Westell 327W router, my airport is in bridge mode and has is successful networking three other laptops and a printer in the house. The problem is only with my xbox 360 The 360 reads the base station correctly, but will not accept the password (I have double-checked with ISP and the password is correct, X-box just won't accept it.) I have attempted to program with the Equivalent Network Password that I found (Airport>Base station >Equivlaent Network Password) to no avail. I was told by x-box tech that AEBS is just not compatible with 360 system. Please help - i don't want to re-do the whole system to get X-box live! Thanks. (I hope this description makes sense)

My son has his xbox live working wifi with the aebs (n).
However, he frequently complains about delays in general and delays with certain other players networked into the game. Occasionally, cable internet can slow down and xbox live regularly has its own issues. What is needed here is someone who can suggest alternative configurations using the aebs dhcp/nat settings. The airport utility help on this subject seems tentative and noncommittal in the vague suggestions provided. Miscrosoft xbox live is a reality that needs to be addressed. I am working on this issue when I can now. If I get any useful info, I will post it here. Is there an online gaming discussion group? That could help.

  • Can't get Airport Extreme to connect to Internet

I have a D-Link 320T ethernet modem. This works fine connected straight into my Mac, but as soon as its connected to the Airport I loose my internet connection. Its seems to be something to do with my setup, but I'm clueless as to what.
My airport seems to be transmitting something, as my Nintendo DS can pick up the Network name I have created, but it gives me this message "connected to access point, but unable to connect to the server", error code 52100.

    Hi Bidge,
Welcome to the Apple.com user discussion boards!
Do you have ADSL? Have you setup the Airport Extreme to establish the PPPoE session with your ISP?
To configure this, please refer to this Apple article - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=166636
