Can't factory restore my Apple TV

After a failed sync, I have been trying to get my AppleTV working again. On startup, I get the startup sequence where I can ultimately choose Reset, Diagnostics or Factory Restore. Reset ends up back at the same screen. Diagnostics says everything is OK and Factory Restore fails and tells me to try again or come here! I am stuck with a brick; any ideas how to break through this problem?
My Apple TV was bought recently with v1.1 since upgraded to v2.
Any help gratefully received,Thanks.

Thanks for the ideas, but...
No, nothing but a plain vanilla AppleTV that has just been upgraded to v2 via its own update service
I have just tried the 'menu + -' restart. All that does is take me to the screen that tells me I can restart, run diagnostics or factory restore. The problem is if I 'restart' I just end up at the same screen. 'Diagnostics' says everything is fine and when I try and 'factory restore' it fails. So you can see I am stuck and unable to get to the working AppleTV system.
Here's hoping!

Sorry but no. The only way to restore an iPod to factory settings is through iTunes on a computer. You will need to get access to a computer somehow. If you can get to an Apple Store, they can probably help you.

Can I factory restore an IMAC Late 2009 without the orginal DVD's? I was given a computer and want to remove the previous owners user login and passwords. I want a fresh install like it was bought new.

You can create a new Admin User in System Preferences then delete the current User. This will give you a clean User but the base system files might have extensions etc installed.
If you upgrade to Mavericks, then you would wipe the computer giving you exactly what you want.
While your computer might meet the requirements, also check your applications for Mavericks compatibility here:  http://roaringapps.com/
Make sure all your software like Microsoft Office and Adobe CS Suites is compatible with Mavericks.
    OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
              ▪          iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
              ▪          MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)

  • Help.. How can I factory restore without a passcode?

I have a iphone 4s that has a corporate passcode that was out on it by my previous job because of inforamtion sensativity.
Im no longer with that company and I want to factory restore my phone, yet I cannot figure out how..
It keeps asking for a passcode at the reset point that I do not have..
What can I do to reset this phone?
    Please help..
    Thank you.

Then it is not asking for a passcode but rather for a password for the Apple ID that "Find My iPhone" is enabled with.  Only that Apple ID can unlock the device for restoring.
This is something that needed to be addressed prior to leaving the company.   You can try contacting them to see if they will release the device for your personal use, unless you purchased it yourself, they are under no such obligation.

  • Can't Factory Restore to SSD

This should be a piece of cake but what am I missing?
The SSD swaps in for the HD no problem.
The Diagnostics on the DVD Recovery Disc (that I burned when I first got the Laptop) can see it. (It runs fine in an external enclosure.)
But when I try to do Factory Restore, I get "The product recovery function has been removed from this system." and it goes no further.
I'm basically trying to start fresh (didn't have much on the HDD anyhow) as a clone of the HD failed for whatever reason (well the SSD doesn't boot up, I figure it's the same problem now).
    tks,
    Ty

That link doesn't work... I've been on about 5 different sites trying to find out how to restore the factory settings on this stupid D610 and all I get is 'hold ctrl and press F11 then release them at the same time' or 'press F8 and choose the reset option'... Well none of them work and I'm just sitting here like an idiot constantly restarting my laptop and pressing buttons that don't do anything.. Can somebody PLEASE give me a decent solution before this laptop exits this house via the top floor window!
    Many thanks.

  • How can I factory restore my phone if I forgot the password.

I bought a phone at a Fleamarket and it has a password on it and I tied to do the reset on the computer but it won't reset it.

Ah, that's a different problem. That means that the phone was probably jailbroken. It may not be possible to restore it, but you can try using DFU mode. If this doesn't work after 3 tries the phone is probably unrecoverable.
    DFU mode:
Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer if it isn't there already
    Reboot your computer
    Disable any antivirus and firewalls
    Launch iTunes
Connect the device cable to a USB port on the computer (not to a USB hub), but DO NOT CONNECT TO THE DEVICE YET
Press and hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time for exactly 10 seconds, until the screen turns black, then release the SLEEP button but continue holding the HOME button. If an Apple logo appears while holding both buttons you held for too long; start over.
While still holding the HOME button connect the other end of the cable to the device
You should see a message in iTunes saying a phone in Recovery mode has been detected. When you see that message release the HOME button and the device should restore.

  • How to restore an Apple TV first generation if it does not factory restore in recovery mode?

The other day, while watching a movie, my Apple TV 1st gen just froze and became unresponsive to any remote control inputs. My intital attempts to just remove power and startup again failed and resulted in repeated crashes and renewed startups. On the discussions here ( Re: Apple TV 1st gen Factory Restore Problems ) I found out how to force restart by holding down the 'menu' key and the ' - ' key simultaneously. This brought me to the Recovery Menu.
Restart from there didn't work, only resulted in coming back to the recovery menu.
Diagnostics showed my Apple TV to be working normally.
Factory Restore immediately brought up a failure message that factory restore was not possible!
I tried this several times but always the same result. My trusted Apple TV first generation had mysteriously turned itself into a brick.
After searching the web and trying all kinds of things, I figured out how to save it. Here's how:
for reference, have a look at this webpage, but keep reading below: http://www.tweaking4all.com/home-theatre/appletv/restore-appletv-os-after-erasin g-disk/
you need a good size USB stick, mine was 4GB
the first method described didn't work for me, is time consuming, and you need an ethernet internet connection
however the second method described (no network needed) worked, but not with the file posted on the website (had wrong size)
download the disk image with the Apple OS from here: http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title=Restoring_the_Apple_OS
I downloaded the Apple OS v3.0.2 file, this proved to be working
If you're on a Mac, download and install the ApplePi-Baker application from here: http://www.tweaking4all.com/hardware/raspberry-pi/macosx-apple-pi-baker/
If you're not on a Mac, follow the instructions in the thread posted in 1.
Using the ApplePi-Baker, or the other methods, restore the disk image to the USB stick; be patient, this may take a while
Unpower your Apple TV, plug in the USB stick, power up your Apple TV
Your Apple TV will now boot up from the USB stick and will install the latest OS on its harddrive
When completed, remove power, remove USB stick, power up and hold down the 'menu' and ' - ' keys simulatenously, this will bring your Apple TV into Recovery mode
    Select Factory Restore
Your Apple TV will now factory restore to OS v 3.0.2
Note: This worked for me right away, but if not you may want to try the earlier OS version, see notes on the OpenElec Wiki page.
Good luck, and keep enjoying your Apple TV first gen!

Based on your suggestions, I've posted an additional article on how to do this ...
    http://www.tweaking4all.com/home-theatre/appletv/restore-appletv-os-offline-1stg en/
Also note that I fixed the issue with the corrupted IMG files .... the files on Tweaking4All.com now work as they are supposed to.
    Thanks again James!

  • Rebuilding iphoto albums after imac factory restore

Hi. Neighbour had just had her imac factory restored (by Apple after apps started to freeze after a number of hours).
I've been tasked with restoring data (for my sins).
I've "gone into" Time Machine and found the backup we did before Apple took over.
I've restored the obvious - desktop media, and am in the middle of doing "pictures" and "documents"
Will iphoto pick up from where it left or do I have to rebuild albums? Thanks.

Final question. I assume iphoto just builds "links" to photos? It doesn't make a copy?
If you choose to use a "referenced" library only links are created.  But it's strongly not recommended unless you're running the latest version of Aperture which can easily fix broken links in referenced libraries.
Open the TM preference pane, turn it off and then on again.  If that fails go to the Options section and add your HDs to the Exclude window.  Then remove them and reboot.
If that fails check here for other possible solutions: Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can't update or factory restore Apple TV

I noticed the Apple TV I just bought for my Living Room hadn't updated to 1.1 even though I'd ran the installer a couple of weeks ago. So I tried running it again - I gave it the "Update Now" prompt, it restarted and when it rebooted I was still stuck on 1.0.
So I then tried to run diagnostics or at worse a factory reset. I pressed the Menu and minus keys on the remote, the Apple TV flashed orange and went into the restart. But instead of presenting me with the factory restore/diagnostics menu it just went right back to the main screen.
I'm not sure what's going on with it. It works fine otherwise, but I can't seem to update or run diagnostics on it. Anyone have any suggestions?

I also was able to complete the download after removing the Ethernet cable and connecting via wireless to my router.  This also fixed my problem of not being able to view my Photo Stream

Did you follow the instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4367
Pay attention to differences in power connection depending on whether or not you have AppleTV2 or AppleTV 3.
Also some microUSB leads don't seem to work - try another if you can. Disconnect superfluous USB device/hubs too if possible.

You can't. Until the previous owner removes the activation lock, the device is useless to you; Apple won't remove it unless presented with proof that the registered owner is dead.

Apologies, I was looking at the wrong schematic for the Apple TV 1. There isn't a button. So lets try this instead...
Remove the power cord and wait 20 seconds.
Plug it back in and let it boot (Give it 10 minutes, it's being tempremental)
Try and navigate to the the advanced menu and do a factory restore
If that doesn't work then if you are using the white remote hold down the menu button for six seconds and release this should bring up a hidden menu which will allow you to access the advanced configuration settings.
Again, if this fails there isn't much to do than tap it with a hammer to see if that fixes it (hard to believe how many times that actually works. (No responsibility taken if it breaks!, but at least you'd have a good reason to buy Apple TV 3)

  • Can't do factory restore & only disks that keep ejecting are the osx install and apps disks

First of all let me say, this is my first Apple computer and I'm not experienced in forums. Please do not read rudeness into what is actually frustration at searching forever for a solution and trying not to wish I had been talked into an Apple.  With that said....
I've had my iMac for about a year and a half.  We had lost our internet and were using a hotspot for awhile so we could look for another provider and get online if we needed to.  One day I signed on and, we didn't have an isp mind you, but the browser opened up to the dominant isp in this area saying a virus was detected coming from this iMac address? I thought that was strange and panicked so decided to do what I would on a pc, just restore the whole thing to factory settings.  Everything was going smooth, (my updates were at 10.6.8 at the time)... when I restored I was back at 10.6.2. (osx disk) I was doing systems updates and one apparently hung.... when told to restart, I did... but the computer would never boot back up.  It would turn on.... go to gray screen... then blue screen... then shut off.  I couldn't boot in safe mode, pram reset did nothing, smc reset did nothing, couldn't hold 'd' to get to diagnostics, couldn't boot to recovery... it kept spitting out disks after trying to read them... with all those solutions I found online and nothing helping I had to call Apple... they couldn't help over the phone because Apple Care expired, unless I purchased help... this frustrated me because every where I found my problem and a different solution their Apple Care had expired too.... so had to set an appt at an Apple store.
So took it in to Apple, just got it back yesterday.  I let them know I was restoring to factory settings so wasn't worried about losing anything.  When I picked it up, I was told no charge... it was a software issue they saw where it hung and fixed it.  I tried to ask questions about the 'software repair' but they didn't seem to want to answer my questions.  It just says 'software repair' on my order. So I asked 'okay, so it's back to factory settings like when I bought it?' I was told yes and I said great that was my goal anyway.  I get home and it's NOT like when I first purchased it or like a factory restore.  Everything I was doing before it crashed is on there. So I'm back to trying to do a factory restore.  But for some reason now, it seems the only disks that keep self ejecting are the osx install and application disks. I still can't do a boot recovery, AHT, or 'c' boot... since the apple disks eject I can't use start up to get to them.
I find it odd that both the oxc install disk and applications disk would be damaged at the same time when they both previously worked.  I called the Apple Store where I took it to talk to the geniuses that worked on it because I had a question about the repair they did....
Apple: I'm sorry we don't offer tech support
Me: I understand but I had a question about the repair done from there the other day
Apple: We are just a store and can't answer tech questions
Me: I understand and get that but since I took my mac to your store to be worked on I thought I could ask the person that worked on it a question about the 'software repair' and meaning and what software was repaired
Apple: No you will have to set another apt to bring your computer in if you are still having problems
    Me: UGHHHHHH (pulling hair out)
So (a little late huh?) to make a long story short giving what I stated above:
Why is it, only the osx install and application disks not working now? They worked before taking it to Apple
What can I do at this point?
Can you do a factory restore without disks on a Mac?
If by chance both disk did for some reason go out, how do I get them replaced?
If I gave TMI without enough important info let me know.
My OS X install disk says version 10.6.2 on it
About this Mac currently says Mac OS X version 10.6.8
Batteries died on keyboard and mouse so am using usb wired keyboard and mouse
At some point I had used bootcamp and then later found parallels so I could install a Corel product and keep using... could some windows files be messing something up in there somewhere?
It used to say Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 and I could have sworn I saw it said 'snow leopard' in there somewhere, now I can't even find that word in search on the computer. Long post I know but trying to set what was going on at the time I took it in.
I'm not sure what else needs to be added to get this to the correct thread or help.  As I stated my goal is to have it like I just pulled it out of the box for the first time so no solution will scare me off about loss of data.
    Thanks for any help.

Wow, sorry to hear of your experience. Seems strange that your disk would just eject like they did. It could be a lot of things but more than likely you just kind of have to start all over.
What I would do is insert your system disk and instead of going immediately to an install I would go to disk utility and erase the drive. That will erase everything on the disk and give you a new blank disk to start with. After that I would try to reinstall the system. Assuming that goes well then you should be restored to where it was when you purchased it. After that you can reinstall all your applications or personal files. I hope you have good backups.
I remember one time I was having a similar problem and don't ask my why I did it but I actually could not get it to install a system. I removed both of my ram sticks, shut the computer down for about 10 minutes including unplugging it from the wall plug, then reinstalled the ram, plugged it back in and started up from the system disk and all worked just fine. To this day I have no idea if pulling the ram helped but I have never had to do it since and for some dumb reason that solved the problem I was having, which is the same problem you are having now. Call it voodoo but it worked.
    Good Luck!!

My daughters iPad has just been factory restored from the apple shop, she was using my iTunes account with her email. When trying to create her own iTunes as she is the correct age it has come up that her email is already being used. How do we  do this with he same email address

    Hello spooner68,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when trying to create an Apple ID for your daughter.  Because her email address is associated with your Apple ID, you are receiving the message that the email address is in use.
To remedy this, you will have to first remove her email address from your account using steps 1-3 of the section titled "How to add an additional email address that is already associated with another Apple ID" in the article below and then attempt to create her Apple ID with her email address:
How to add an additional email address that is already associated with another Apple ID
If you have an email address that is already associated with another Apple ID, you may need to remove it from your other Apple ID before you can add it to your preferred Apple ID.
Sign in to My Apple ID with the Apple ID that has the email address already associated with it.
Find the email address that you want to move to your preferred Apple ID, then click Delete.
Click Save Changes, then click Sign Out at the top of the page.
