Can't fade in fade out in iMovie?

I am now on my new mac mini using iMovie 10.0.6 and don't see the option to fade in - fade out in transitions. Is there an earlier version of iMovie that works on yosemite that still has those transitions?

With your project open in the timeline, select Transitions in the Content Library section of the sidebar, below the Libraries list.
To preview a transition, skim it in the browser.
Browse transitions to find the new transition you want to use.
Drag the new transition to the transition icon for the transition you want to replace in the timeline.
The new transition replaces the old one.

How do I keep from having my titles fade in and out in iMovie 10.0.1? Or is there a way to customize a title at all, other than location, size, and color (such as fade direction, duration, entrance...)?

This is something that I thought came standard with all video editing software and I'm very surprised to not be able to find it in my version of iMovie. All I want to do is create captions that don't fade in and out.

Several posters have asked this and it doesn't appear to be possible in iMovie 10. I guess you would have to create .png stills with the caption and the rest transparent then add them as cutaways.

Audio fade in and out in imovie 11 with a transition not working

When I fade audio out and fade audio in imovie 11 with a transition in between the fade would not work. If I remove the transition they would work. How can I fix this. If i reinstall life 11 would it lose my would or repair the issue.

I am having the same problem. I found a decent workaround:
At the point where you want to fade out, record a voiceover (using a mic) of silence. In other words, cover the microphone and record nothing for a second or two.
Then go into the audio settings for this voiceover and select the "ducking" checkbox, and change the setting so that all other tracks go to 0% sound when the voiceover is playing. The ducking feature has a built-in fader, so this way, when the silent voiceover comes on, it fades out the other track(s)--effectively giving you a fade-out effect on any concurrent track.
Not a perfect solution but can help...good luck!

Made a drop down menu. How can I get the drop down to fade in and out? !

Yes, you'll need a client-side script to do fade-in/fade-out fx. Look at jQuery Superfish.

I have used I tunes to download music with a paid I tunes card. I can no longer open the music store to download my music. When I do open the music store it fades in and out, preventing me from downloading music.

I can nolonge download music from I tunes, because the music store page fades in and out and will not remain permanent to allow me to download music with a pre-paid I tunes card.
Also, why is it you can only download music to an I-pod from one primary computer. Is there a method that will allow me to download music from a variety of computers.

Thanks for the reply. Great news about the volume adjusts.
Now about those fades for the volume. How are you doing that?
1. Right click the Timeline video audio and select Fade and then
see the Fade options (I had a video with audio file, so I saw the choices as shown in the screenshot)
2. You can also create two volume keyframes at each end of the Timeline audio clip rubberband (orange line that goes horizontally across the middle of the audio clip). At the position of the Timeline Indicator, click the Add/Remove Keyframe icon, and then with the mouse cursor position the white dots (volume keyframes) to achieve the Fade In and Fade Out audio. In the screenshot below I have moved the Timeline Indicator so that you could better see the white dots (volume keyframes).
Please let us know if any of the above works for you with regard to the audio fades.

GB for iPad doesn't have volume automation, you'd need to import the project into GB on a Mac to create the fade with a volume curve.
as an alt, finish your song and export the audio file, then import the audio file in an audio editor and create a volume fade with that:

I'm not sure what you mean about fading the instrument and not the notes. I just want to fade out one note/per instrument at the end of certain passages. Care to expound?
In general, MIDI does not provide a mechanism to control the volume of individual notes.
In MIDI (and sequencer terms), a note has a note on, a note number (which key was pressed) and how hard you hit that key (velocity). Then a corresponding note off. There is nothing in a note specification that let's you control the volume of a note through it's duration.
In MIDI terms, you can use a controller MIDI message, typically #7 which is used for volume, and modify that over the time the note is playing. But this is controlling the volume of the instrument not the individual notes - the same as turning up and down the volume on the instrument. All notes that the instrument is playing are affected equally - if you are holding a chord, the entire chord will ramp in volume. You cannot just ramp the volume of one note within the chord using this method.
(The closest MIDI can get to controlling individual notes volume is with polyphonic aftertouch, but this is not often supported and is a more advanced technique - given that you are new to this I'm going to ignore it for now to avoid over-complicating things. I mention it to stop all the people chiming in with "you're so wrong Beejay you muppet you can do this with poly aftertouch don't you know anything" blah blah).

Open the piano roll, select View -> Hyperdraw -> Volume.
You can click/draw in it with the pencil tool to create MIDI volume (CC#7) changes.

Use the range selection tool and select the portion of the clip you want to change the volume on. Drag the volume line down and FCP will create keyframes which you can adjust as you want to get a fade shape.

Can a screen fade in and out???

I am putting together a slide show using the Screens option
in Flash CS3. It is a series of photographs, and I want each one to
fade in, then fade out as the next shot is loaded. The transitions
seem to offer only an in OR an out fade - can't I do both??

1. Make sure each slide is converted to a movie clip
2. Create two keyframes for each slide
3. Create a motion tween between the two keyframes
4. Change the alpha on the second keyframe to 0% (this
creates your fade out)
To fade in, just change the alpha to 0% on the first keyframe
instead. Then you can move the tweens on the timeline to either
crossfade, or fade in fade out. Hope this helps.

Can I alter the fade in/out times of titles?

Many of the canned titles have a fade in/out which for me is too abrupt.
I would like to make them much longer but can't find any way in the Inspector.

I omitted to mention that I also want to do the same thing with normal clips.
Up to now I have used the workaround of adding a cross dissolve to the front or end of the clip and stretching it to a suitable length but this does not work with a title.
I was hoping that titles and clips would have an opacity line on them which could be keyframed and adjusted as in FCP.
I eventually returned to FCP 7 and achieved it in seconds.

How do I adjust my titles so they don't fade in and out? I have hundreds of photos/videos on screen for a second or so each, for a year-long birthday video, and I need the dates in my titles to be steady rather than fading in and out spastically.

I have been working on a project since December of 2012 for my son's first birthday. Basically, it's a photo or quick video each day of his life so far. I used the "upper" title and made the titles not fade in and out, because that could give someone a seizure. The idea is a seamless title that ticks away each day. But in the new iMovie, it changed my settings, and I can't for the life of me find how to change them back.
Now, each date flashes in and out, in and out, in and out. Fractions of seconds go by. It's really distracting and annoying.
How do I get the titles to remain on screen and not fade in and out? I had it just how I wanted it, but now we're rapidly approaching my son's birthday, and the video is suddenly a mess.

iMovie'08 & 09 is not the best tools to do a DVD or a DiskImage (via iDVD) from.
You use iDVD to do the DiskImage - but that's when the movie is done.
You can't (at least I can't) do a diskimage first then put a movie into it.
The movie has to be encoded eg .mpeg2 and that's including the rest of the DVD structure too.
No body builds houses - roof first then the supporting walls to end with throwing
in a basement as a last action.
To do a Data-DVD (*not playable in a DVD-player*) is another story.
Just insert the DVD disk and when asked select format.
This makes a DVD-ROM and You can drop movies and other files into this but
when burned (taken out) it's done (one time burn)
Please elaborate on what You want to be the result.
iMovie HD 6 and iDVD'08 or 09 is a very nice combination.

Stripe Subtitle Fade In and Out Issue

After upgrading to iMovie HD 6, I found the Stripe Subtitle to fade in correctly, but when it begins to fade out, it will abrubtly disappear. In iMovie HD 5, the Stripe Subtitle would fade in and out smoothly. It does this when I preview a stripe subtitle, as well as in finished DVDs and Quicktime movies. I have tried adjusting the speed and pause, but that has no effect on this issue.
You can see an example of this in one of my videos. Just watch the first minute and you'll see it happen when I introduce the first speaker:
