Can't figure out where I went wrong...

50GB of disk space on my macbook air disappeared. One minute disk utility shows 50GB of free space, the next less than 1GB. All I did within that timeframe was create a partition on an external 1TB disk and backed up the mac OS and Windows 7. Please help.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide /Volumes/ as the path. If there are any folders inside, move them out.

    I had WEBROOT for a very long time. Its gone from Firefox now. I do not know why. I want it back. How can I get it back, or shall I be forced to change to (YUK!) Chrome as my browser???

For a breakdown of the lab go urlhttp://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~paolo/teaching/494MJ/labs/lab8.shtml{url}. If you don't feel like reading that: THe program reads in some command line arguments. From there it reads from the file provided in the command line and creates "keys" from the specified length. From there I need to create a phrase of the specified length. If i am supposed to create more then one then i do. That is pretty much it. I can't figure out where (really why) the NullPointerException error is coming from.
    Help is appreciated!!

    Post the actual error text (copy and paste, don't "interpret" it) here.
    It should include a stack trace which references a line number of the program -
    unless you suppressed the trace, in which case change your error handling
    so that the trace is produced.
    Identify which program line in your post the error is pointing to so that we can match
    the error with your program, since your post doesn't have line numbers..

    Thanks. I'm working with different hosts and I guess thats where the confusion for me is coming in. In bluehost, I simply submit my form through form action to http://www.bluehost/bluemail. With the php form construction it 's form action is contact.php. Does this mean that the server I'm working with will uinderstand how to process contact.php and where to send it based on paramaters previously submitted? Or do I instruct the server via the php form? Thanks again

    The reason why this is done in php is because php is server-side scripting. It's telling your server to do stuff. HTML doesn't tell your server anything, it tells the client (the web browser loading it) to do things. Only your server can send an email.

  • Random music is playing and we can't figure out where it is coming from, random music is playing and we can't figure out where it is coming from

    ONe of our Macs has just randomly started playing music and we can't figure out where it is.  iTunes is off, all browsers are off.  Anyone know how to search for the source??

    Have you got iChat.   There have been examples where this was the cause.  If you have, turn it off to check.   You could also go to activity monitor to check what parts of you system are active.

  • Extra spacing - can't figure out where it is coming from.

    Hello,
    I am trying to close the gap between the sentence "We can cover your overdrafts in two different ways" and the actual two points.  I can not figure out where all that space is coming from:
    http://www.tellgcu.com/melanie.shefchik
    Thanks,
    Melanie

    The space is there as a result of the default margin/padding on the .mainbody paragraph tag.
    You can either set the margin and padding to zero on the css:
    .mainbody {
    font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;
    font-size: 10px;
    padding: 0 0 10px 0;
    margin: 0
    However if you have that class applied somewhere else on the page you may want to set some inline css to specifically deal with the issue:
    <p class="mainbody" style="margin: 0; padding: 0 0 10px 0;">Dear Melanie,<br /><br />
    An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it
    anyway. We can cover your overdrafts in two different ways:</p>

    You guys helped me fix the presets in LR, but now I have to go and do each image by hand.  When I go to "photo" in the library module, then to "develop settings," and then to "reset," it shows a keyboard shortcut of an up arrow, the apple command and R.  I have never figured out where that stupid arrow is on my MAC keyboard.  I would appreciate your help with this one also.  I have several thousand photos to get thru.   Many thanks for your willingness to share your expertise!!!!

  • Datasheet pasting - how can I figure out where the errors are?

    For example, I am trying to paste a fairly large chunk of data into the Datashet view to use in a list.  (about 30 columns by 9000 rows, so 270,000 cells.) When I try to page, it tells me that about 800 could not be pasted, but does not tell me WHICH
    cells, or even which COLUMNS.   I am sure that if I could just figure out which cells were not being pasted, I could easily figure out WHY there is an error.  Can anybody give me any useful tips to help me pinpoint which columns/cells are having
    the problem? Thanks!

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that to paste 270,000 cells data into the Datashet view to use in a list.
    Please make sure the view have sufficient columns, otherwise the paste operation will fail.
    A paste operation will also fail in the following situations:
    Some or all of the destination cells are read-only
    Pasting the contents into the selected cells will make them fail the validation rules
    Attempting to paste data that does not match the data type of the destination cells
    Attempting to paste data into a calculated column

  • My mini iPad won't sync to laptop. Says needs update, but can't figure out where to update it.

    My mini iPad won't sync to my laptop, also a Mac. When I plug it in it says it needs to be updated, but I can't figure it out.

    First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.
    If that doesn't help post back with more specifics on what is happening. Describe any error messages you get.

  • I can't figure out what im doing wrong with my File I/O program lol

    I'm new to the java language and was wondering if anybody could help me with the program i an writing. I don't quite understand file I/O but I've given it my best and I'm stuck. I'm supposed to write a program that will read in a file of student academic credit data and create a list of students on academic warning. The list of students on warning will be written to a file. Each line of the input file will contain the
    student name (a single String with no spaces), the number of semester hours earned (an integer), the total quality points earned (a double). The program should compute the GPA (grade point or quality point average) for each student (the total quality points divided by the number of semester hours) then write the student information to the output file if that student should be put on academic warning. A student will be on warning if he/she has a GPA less than 1.5 for students with fewer than 30 semester hours credit, 1.75 for students with fewer than 60 semester hours credit, and 2.0 for all other students. The instructions are :
    1. Set up a Scanner object scan from the input file and a PrintWriter outFile to the output file inside the try
    clause (see the comments in the program). Note that you’ll have to create the PrintWriter from a FileWriter,
    but you can still do it in a single statement.
    2. Inside the while loop add code to read the input file—get the name, the number of credit hours, and the
    number of quality points. Compute the GPA, determine if the student is on academic warning, and if so
    write the name, credit hours, and GPA (separated by spaces) to the output file.
    3. After the loop close the PrintWriter and Scanner objects in a finally block.
    4. Think about the exceptions that could be thrown by this program:
    • A FileNotFoundException if the input file does not exist
    • A InputMismatchException if it can’t read an int or double when it tries to – this indicates an error in the
    input file format
    • An IOException if something else goes wrong with the input or output stream
    Add a catch for each of these situations, and in each case give as specific a message as you can. The
    program will terminate if any of these exceptions is thrown, but at least you can supply the user with useful
    information.
    5. Test the program. Test data is in the file students.txt. Be sure to test each of the exceptions as well.
    My source code is:
    // Warning.java
    // Reads student data from a text file and writes data to another text file.
    import java.util.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class Warning
    // Reads student data (name, semester hours, quality points) from a
    // text file, computes the GPA, then writes data to another file
    // if the student is placed on academic warning.
    public static void main (String[] args)
         int creditHrs; // number of semester hours earned
         double qualityPts; // number of quality points earned
         double gpa; // grade point (quality point) average
         Scanner scan=null;
         PrintWriter outFile=null;
         String name, inputName = "students.txt";
         String outputName = "warning.txt";
         try
              // Set up Scanner to input file
              scan=new Scanner(new FileInputStream(inputName));
              // Set up the output file stream
              outFile = new PrintWriter(new FileWriter(outputName));
              // Print a header to the output file
              outFile.println ();
              outFile.println ("Students on Academic Warning");
              outFile.println ();
              // Process the input file, one token at a time
              while (scan.hasNext())
                   // Get the credit hours and quality points and
                   // determine if the student is on warning. If so,
                   // write the student data to the output file.
                   name=scan.next();
                   creditHrs=scan.nextInt();
                   qualityPts=scan.nextDouble();
                   gpa=qualityPts/creditHrs;
                   if ((gpa < 1.5 && creditHrs < 30) || (gpa < 1.75 && creditHrs < 60) || (gpa < 2.0 && creditHrs >= 60))
                        outFile.print(name + " ");
                        outFile.print(creditHrs + " ");
                        outFile.print(qualityPts + " ");
                        outFile.print(gpa);
              //Add a catch for each of the specified exceptions, and in each case
              //give as specific a message as you can
    catch (FileNotFoundException e)
    System.out.println("The file " + inputName + " was not found.");
    catch (IOException e)
    System.out.println("The I/O operation failed and " + outputName + " could not be created.");
    catch (InputMismatchException e)
    System.out.println("The input information was not of the right type.");
              //Close both files in a finally block
    finally
         scan.close();
         outFile.close();
    The txt file is:
    Smith 27 83.7
    Jones 21 28.35
    Walker 96 182.4
    Doe 60 150
    Wood 100 400

    Davis 110 198
    Smart 75 292.5
    Bird 84 168
    Summers 52 83.2
    The program will run and then terminate without creating warning.txt. How can I get it to create the warning .txt file? Any help that you could give would be greatly appreciated.

  • Am I bottlenecked? Can't figure out where...

    Looking at resource monitor, I'm not using my hardware to it's full potential.
    Here's what I got:
    Intel i7 870  2.93Ghz (4 real cores + 4HT)
    16GB of DDR3 1600MHz
    Nvidia GT 430 (1GB, 96 CUDA Cores, 700MHz)
    Windows 7 64bit.
    So, I've configured AE CS6 according to this tutorial: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/digital-video-cs6/how-to-optimize-after-effects-cs6-for-high-per formance/?go=
    I've enabled Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously, set CUPs reserved to other Applications to 4 (giving 4 real CPUs to AE) with 3GB of RAM Allocation per CPU (for a total of 12GB) leaving a healthy 4GB of RAM for other applications.
    The system disk is a 64Gb SSD and I've got another similar one set up as the scratch.
    GPU rendering is enabled and so is harware accelerated Fast Previews.
    I've got a single FullHD composition (from pre-processed defished TIF stills) and I'm running 3 filters in the following order:
    a) - Warp Stabilizer (Synthesize Edges, just 0.2s for Synthesis Input Range and 25pixels Feather)
    b) - Color Finesse (just a shadow boost through curves)
    c) - Noise reduction (3 passes IIRC, 60% opacity)
    I'm rendering to uncompressed.
    From enabling/disabling those effects, I'd say a) takes 40% of the time, b) less than 10% and c) over 50%.
    Each video frame takes about 9s to process.
    I'm not running "anything else" and the issue I'm facing is that CPU frequency only oscilates between 1200MHz minimum and 1600MHz maximum as if AE wasn't pushing the CPUs.
    4 CPU's are being used at ~60% each, with the virtual cores parked as expected, as can be seen from the attached capture. The source footage is on a regular 1.5TB disk but disk usage is dismall 1.2MB read and 600K writes...
    GPU usage is also NULL.
    Shouldn't the CPUs be at 100% and full clock? I could understand if it's not in the nature of Warp Stabilizer to be parallel friendly but those regular spikes on CPU 2 (which are consistent with 9s per frame) show that neither Noise Reduction is taxing the CPU...
    What gives?
    Thanks in advance.
    Duarte Bruno.
    (edit) This disk where the footage lies easily breaks 50MB/s so it can't be the culprit and I've tried a small compression job on VirtualDub that easily sends the CPU flying to full speed.

    There are two things going on here. Some filters take better advantage of your system's power than others. Some are not MP friendly, some are. Until the developers have the time (and it takes a bunch of time) and the resources (it costs a bunch of money) to make  every program call completely aware of an unlimited variety of plug-ins, system configurations, and background processes so each read/calculate/write process uses 100% of every possible data path, you'll never get an app as complex as AE 100% efficient.
    The second thing going on here is that the system can process data faster than the data can be move on and off a drive. Grab frame info, process it, be done with it, then write it and grab it again before you can grab another frame. When the process requires this kind of analysis the bottle neck is the data transfer rate on and off a drive or in and out of memory. That's the linear progression that Mylenium is talking about. Temporal effects do this kind of processing. Things have to wait for read, calculate, write cycles. We'll just have to wait until developers have the resources to change that. AE gets better at doing most things with each new build. Sometimes bugs pop up, sometimes things that shouldn't slip past QA/QC do, but I  clearly remember when just rendering a simple key took 20 or 30 seconds a frame.
    BTW, Virtual dub can run your CPU's to 100% easily because it's just doing a single set of calculations.

  • A simple networking program, I can't figure out what's gone wrong

    hi, dear all, I programmed a simple server and client, I try to type some in client and see it on the server side, but the server doesn't show the input from client. Please help me out, thanks a lot.
    there are two classes, server and client.
    server class:
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class test3 {
    /** Creates a new instance of test3 */
    public test3() {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    try {
    ServerSocket server = new ServerSocket(5555);
    while (true) {
    Socket connection = server.accept( );
    try{
    // OutputStreamWriter out
    // = new OutputStreamWriter(connection.getOutputStream( ));
    // out.write("You've connected to this server.\r\n");
    // out.flush();
    InputStream in = connection.getInputStream( );
    StringBuffer input = new StringBuffer( );
    int c;
    // connection.close( );
    int i = 0;
    while(i < 10){
    while ((c = in.read( )) != -1) input.append((char) c);
    String inString = input.toString().trim( );
    System.out.println(inString);
    i++;
    catch (IOException e) {
    // This tends to be a transitory error for this one connection;
    // e.g. the client broke the connection early. Consequently,
    // we don't want to break the loop or print an error message.
    // However, you might choose to log this exception in an error log.
    /* finally {
    // Most servers will want to guarantee that sockets are closed
    // when complete.
    try {
    if (connection != null) connection.close( );
    catch (IOException e) {}
    catch (IOException e) {
    System.err.println(e);
    client class:
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class test4{
    public static void main(String[] args){
    try{
    Socket theSocket = new Socket("192.168.1.102", 5555);
    OutputStream theOutputStream = theSocket.getOutputStream();
    OutputStreamWriter out = new OutputStreamWriter(theOutputStream);
    BufferedReader userIn = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
    while (true) {
    String theLine = userIn.readLine( );
    if (theLine.equals(".")) break;
    System.out.println(theLine);
    out.write(theLine + "\r\n");
    out.flush( );
    // System.out.println(networkIn.readLine( ));
    }// end of while
    }// end of try
    catch (IOException e) {
    System.err.println(e);
    }// end of catch
    } // end of main
    } // end of test4
    Thanks again

    Well, i don't get the error to, but I use the DataOutputStream and DataInputStream or ObjectOutputStream and ObjectInputStream with the I/O connection.
    the basic steps at the server are:
    1) create new ServerSocket
    2) Waiting for a connection
    3) Create a I/O Stream
    4) Process the job
    5) close the connection
    at the client are:
    1) connect to the server
    2) Create a I/o stream
    3) process the job
    4) close the connection
    Maybe you can send what the specify error you get in your code
