Can't figure this out: locating a MBP on the same wifi network

Can't figure this out: when my 13" MBP is connected wirelessly to my Airport base station, my iPad can see it. When I connect the MBP to the base station via ethernet cable (for faster connection), the iPad can no longer see it.
Note: my airport is not connected to the internet. I'm simply wanting to setup a closed network for the iPad to connect to the MBP. There's nothing else on the network. The app on the iPad is locating the MBP by ip address so it must be a permanently assigned number.

Am having the same problem.
Everything was working fine until yesterday.
Now if I connect my iMac to the Extreme with Ethernet the Airport is not visible and I can't connect to the internet.
iPods and iPhones can still use the wifi to get on the internet.
If I switch the iMac to Airport it works, but, will not work with the Ethernet cable connected.
Have tried changing ethernet cables and still no go.
Can't figure this out.

• How can I figure this out?

Very simple function, but as a beginner, it's still difficult for me.
my mouse wants to detect boxes on the canvas and return the center coordinate of these boxes, how can i figure this out? The game will be, if point(x,y) is inside a box , return box Center

I just noticed that you are placing them on Canvas and it is not a container object. One solution would be to keep track of boundaries of those clickable areas and whenever a click occurs, a check which box was clicked, if any. I hope this helped.

• HT3819 Home Share issue: I have a Mac and Apple TV. Both are log into the same Wifi network and the same iTunes account (I can view purchased movies on AppleTV). Home Sharing shows 'ON' for both devices. BUT...AppleTV shows no computers. Itunes sidebar-no

Has anyone else found solution to Apple devices not 'seeing' each other on Home Share? I have a Macbook Air (new Nov'12) and Apple TV (new Dec'12). Software updated on both. Both are logged into the same Wifi network and the same iTunes account (I can view movies purchased from iTunes on my AppleTV). Home Sharing shows 'ON' for both devices. BUT...AppleTV shows no computers... and ... Itunes sidebar does not have a 'Shared' area at all. Help please as without this functionality, my Apple TV only provides portal to purchased (i.e. Netflix,...) content which I can get from Wii or Xbox.
I have already tried the following without success:
1. Homeshare DID work the first day after I setup Apple TV... but the next day it has not worked since then.
2. Powered off 30 sec then re-started (Apple TV & Macbook & iTunes login)
3. Checked Firewall settings per Home Sharing troubleshooting guide (correct settings)
4. Turning on Photostream in iPhoto and selecting iPhoto within iTunes and then checking to see if Photostream shows anything on AppleTV (it shows 'on' for my iTunes account but 'Zero' pictures found ... despite the >3,000 pictures showing avail in iTunes).
I also have 'Remote" app on my iPhone 4, with Home Sharing turned on (same Wifi network)... it has a very similar message as the Apple TV and same result that despite all devices having HomeShare 'on' they cannot see each other: "Remote will automatically find the iTunes libraries and Apple TVs that have Home Sharing turned on using the account xxxx (it lists my correct itunes account name)."

I solved this by reset of the Wifi (unplug cable and power to both modem and wifi ... wait 60 sec ... plug in modem cable and power ... plug in wifi power and LAN to modem ... restart AppleTV and Mac ... Turn Home Share 'OFF' in iTunes then back "ON" ... it took ~60 sec for the AppleTV to pick up my Mac in computers.

I understand that the OP failed to do research. But then, I wasn't replying to the OP. I was replying to Chris. I have Verizon. I can talk and use data at the same time with my Droid Maxx. Therefore, the problem is not just with the network. It would be technically possible for an iPhone to do that on Verizon/Sprint if Apple had chosen to use a different chip, such as the kind other phone manufacturers have elected to use.
Of course, this is probably all irrelevant to the OP's issue. It was merely a point of clarification, especially for those people who are used to being able to use both voice and data at the same time on Verizon. When they switch to an iPhone, they are often surprized at the limitation.
Best of luck.

• WHY!!!!! I can't figure this out

Why my girlfriend is getting the message that her "remote IP address is invalid" I can't seem to understand or figure this out...

They should turn off Internet Sharing in System Preferences > Sharing if it is On
Are either of you running Internet Sharing? If so, turn it off.
They should not be letting Parallels connect using the Mac's IP if they run Parallels.
Do either of you use Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion to run windows on you Mac? If so, turn off their access to the internet in their settings or preferences.
They should not be connected to the Router via wireless (Airport card) and Wired (Ethernet) at the same time.
Are either of you connected to both Ethernet port and Airport wireless at the same time. If so, disable one of the network configurations. Either unplug the cable or turn Airport off.
They should not have two DHCP servers in a modem and router on their LAN.
How are your router and modem configured. If they are both distributing IP addresses, then you need to either set your router to bridge mode or set the modem to assign just one IP address. I don't know what hardware you have, so I can't begin to tell you how to configure either. Unless it is an Airport Base Station, most modems and routers are configured through a Web interface. Airport Utility will let you configure the Airport Base Station.

• I have a report from WhatisHang which (in theory) tells my why my firefox constantly hangs up. But I need someone who can help figure this out.

I hope this section will work, i couldnt find a place for Hang ups, and this problem doesnt usually cause a full crash, which is why it was hard to figure it out.
I finally used the program WhatisHang to try to get an idea of what is causing the seemingly random hanging, but have been unable to find anyone who can help me with it.
I have posted the Troubleshooting Information, though i dont think it would be of much help.
I have the report available but dont know where i can post it.

I must admit I seem possibly to be suffering from hangs also, although as I am often not in a hurry when using firefox on this machine it has little impact. I am using a legacy computer and tend to blame this on the computer or maybe background tasks such as from security software or indexing.
'''Do you still get the hangs in safe mode with all''' (or maybe all but one essential plugin if you think a plugin is involved in the hangs) '''plugins disabled ?
Have you tried to rule out
* background tasks are the problem,
(at least monitor what else is running using Task Manager or sysinternals process explorer)
* [[is my firefox problem a result of malware|malware]].
( consider full system scans with multiple tools/software)
* any other interacting programs or plugins
(some may not be listed in firefox, you may need to check / uninstall from the OS {Windows Control Panel})
**it may also be an idea to check hangs still occur when WhatIsHangs is not in use.
* have you tried logging the cc & gc times in the error console,
(if for instance you see times in 1000s of milliseconds appearing you may have then identified one reason for firefox being unresponsive, even if the cause is not yet identified. - a symptom the memshrink firefox developers will no doubt be eager to investigate)
* if you can get hangs in safe mode, on at least the Aurora channel releases I suggest you immediately go ahead and file a bug yourself. (I will try to find time if not today then next weekend to look more closely at my own system to see if it is showing hangs in firefox use)
** ideally try with all default preferences
** As you have changed preferences, I suggest you include as a attachment in the bug your list of user modified preferences (use ''about:support'' or Troubleshooting Information option)
** State what security software is in use, it could be an important factor.
(I imagine the majority of users have security software, or if not have security vulnerabilities and potentially an undetected malware problem)
I will try to find and download a copy of WhatIsHang, see if it works on my system and what results it then shows.
I realise I have not said anything terribly helpful I solving your problem, but I suspect you are not alone in having hangs, if you are able to spare the time to investigate and report I am sure it will help others.
Firefox has had a few problems recently that would have been solved sooner if they were investigated when first reported, but unfortunatly an advantage of firefox is how easy it is to customise, but the downside is differentiating between a firefox fault and customisation problems.

• I still can't figure this out...Help!

Wow, my head hurts from trying to get Qmaster up and running...all the wasted hours! Anyways,
I have a DP 2.5GHz G5 and a DP 1.25GHz G4...the G5 has FCS installed (5.1.4), G4 only has Qmaster related items installed and both computers running 10.4.8 networked via ethernet through (100mbs hub) the G5 in Qmaster sys pref set to "services and cluster controller", G4 set to "services only' and both only have the source "Compressor" used - both shared and managed checked (I don't have Shake, so I un-checked those).
In QAdmin, I have my cluster "G5 Cluster" which contains both the G4 and G5. When I export from FCP using compressor option, only G5 runs...(I am chossing the "G5 Cluster" in the drop down menu in Compressor)... If I export from FCP using self contained QT movie, then run Compressor (from G5) and try and compressor that movie, only the G4 runs. I can not get both computers to run simultaneously on the same job. I have "Job Segmenting" checked in the Inspector in Compressor
I have scoured the disscussions looking for answers and it seems that exporting from FCP using Compressor only uses the machine(s) that have FCP installed on it...is this correct?
I have also read that maybe I need to install Compressor on my G4 (according to the manual I don't) but do I?
Maybe it is not even worth it...if someone out there doesn't think it is (in my case) please don't hesitate to say so...because at this point I am about to give up on Qmaster. Thanks in advance.
Dave

HI dave,, yes very strange indeed.
My first port of call is usually to lock at the:
• QMASTER console logs. Use /applications/utilities/console.app .. look closely and there will be something of interest in there for you, particularly the ~/..logs/QMASTER..
• also look in there also for compressor.
I have some mention of this (as do many smilar posts) in a post I did some time back at:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=951536&tstart=0
I found the log helpful to resolve may of these funny things in QMASTER.
Sounds like a resource "unavailable" issue.. such as one servioce node cannot access the resoures it needs.
If this is tha case and (you dont have an SSAFS like XSAN), then make sure you have all the resources (inputs, outputs etc) MOUNTED and available to the G5 and the G4 (over NFS - your 100baseT or pt/pt 1GbE).
Oh and inparocula the compressor option "DONT COPY from SOURCE" or what ever it is.. som make sur all the OBJECTS are available to each machone. Check the GROUPS if you have to in the finder (get info +i) for deatios and permissions.. maybe this could be an issue too.. bit it doesn't sound like if you have alternatively runnign form compressor then our of FCP...
MY initial guess is that QMASTER has a look around and the resources if needs for that machine (either of your two hosts) are not there on that machne where it wont run.
Also check out the detail in the BATCH MONTOR. It would likely have a softerror in the display saying that something didn't fire up.
Anyway. if you find somthing interetsing in the QMSTER log, feel free to post it.
good luck

My Ipad 2 cant find my HP3050A j661b airprint printer although the printer is connected to the same wireless network and software updates are current on all and my other laptops also work properly with this printer.further more it used to work with my IPAD2 before when I used the old wireless router but now I changed it to HAUWEI HG231f but I set everything in the same way it was. Thanks in advance.

When you change to the new router, did you re-run the CD to re-set the new SSID and password to the printer.
Otherwise your iPad will not be able "talk" to your printer.

• HT3819 How can you use Home sharing to play music on an xbox 360 for example thats connected to the same WiFi network?

My console is running under the same WiFi service as my itunes, iphone, and all the content i have saved in my library. How can i link, perhaps through HomeSharing, my content from my phone or computer to my xbox console?

You can't. Homesharing allow to share your iTunes content over Apple's devices. XBox isn't made by Apple but Microsoft.

• Self Assigned IP address – can't figure this out. Frustrated.

This is a long post but bear with me. It proposes a challenge for the mac connoisseur. Who knows? Might be fun?
OK, here goes:
Please help. I have been trying to fix this for about 7 months. I first noticed this issue when I started traveling around the country, from hotel to hotel. While others (PC's and Mac's) had no trouble connecting to the free wifi at these hotels, I did. I kept getting "self-assigned i.p."
This was extremely frustrating. I often had to call up the i.t. guys and ask them to help me manually put in ip address, subnet mask, router (gateway), and dns. This worked much of the time but not always.
Let me also say that, sometimes it worked perfectly! I'd say about 25% of the time (at these hotels) my internet worked perfectly – just connected immediately. The other 75... "self-assigned i.p."
I just spoke to the mac "geniuses" and they told me it's not an issue with my computer at all (either hardware or software). Are you kidding me?!?! How can they explain everyone else's internet working except mine. And I'm talking like 100 or more different hotels in a 4 month period. They were trying to tell me that it was just a coincidence every time! "You'd be surprised" one guy said. Hahaha. They said that the routers aren't accepting my computer's whatever. OK, well WHY?! The router works for everyone but me. It's something wrong with my computer right?! Well no one acknowledged this.
More background info:Just had my airport card and logic board replaced. Computer came back and the sheet said "passed all hardware tests." BUT, none of my issues (I had other ones too involving battery life and not being able to access certain websites) were fixed.
I went to an apple store. They told me to do an erase and reinstall or whatever. So I did that (by dragging and dropping everything I'd saved on an external hard drive using disk utility). By the way, I also upgraded from leopard to snow leopard. So now, if I have the same issues after this I'll know both leopard and snow leopard are screwed up.... right?
OK, so I followed their instructions on deleting and reinstalling to a tee and guess what?! Everything worked! Or so it seemed. Battery fine. Websites now accessible. I figured the airport issue was fixed too. But now that I'm not touring anymore and the airport works in my house, I never encountered any issues. Until now. At my work.
I got a new job and it's one in which I HAVE to have a computer that connects to the internet. So of course, the same issue with self assigned i.p. presents itself. Everyone else in the office has no problem. Including a Mac person that used to work there.
I've been reading some other threads that are just completely confusing me. One of them might be the solution but I thought I'd detail my troubles so that some smart computer person out there can diagnose my specific problem and give me a specific fix.
I noticed that many people believe there was a bug in one of the 10.5 updates. I am pretty quick to install updates (maybe I shouldn't be because I hear that the first updates are often buggy and maybe you should wait for a while). But this problem has continued now with Snow Leopard too so... I don't know. I don't know anything anymore. I have tried everything. And Apple is telling me it's not a problem with my computer. Give me a break.
One more interesting quirk: before doing the erase and reinstall my computer could not find the Apple Store's network. After the erase and reinstall it works. That's why I assumed everything was fine! But no. And now the Mac people are saying there's no problem because they can't see it.
BTW, I have tried all the obvious things. It's not an obvious thing. But I mean, if you think it is... then tell me I guess. But I've been in the advanced tab thousands of times. I feel like I've exhausted everything in there.
Thank you thank you thank you in advance if someone is actually able to solve my issue.
