Can't find a 'phantom' unread mail or mark it as being read

I'm using mail on various machines to access an Exchange server account. It generally works with no problems, but on my work MacPro (and only on this computer not the iMac at home, various laptops, iPad, iPhone etc) mail tells me there is an unread message. However, I can't find this message and it's not there when I use a webmail interface to access the same account. No problem, I figured I could just right click on the mailbox and 'mark all messages as read', but this doesn't work! I like to keep a clear inbox with no unread messages and it's driving me nuts!
I'm guessing that there's some strange synching conflict, but don't know how to solve it. Any ideas, please?
Thanks, Jon.

I tried both, but neither has worked.
a) Rebuilding the mailbox revealed another unread mail that actually existed, but didn't remove the 'phantom'.
b) The SM trick uncovered lots of unread news items from Apple, but not the 'phantom'.
Thanks for your help, but I might need to do something more drastic like deleting the account and adding it again.
Thanks, Jon.

  • Can not find some messages in Mail using search

I have some problems with Mail.app I can not find some messages in Mail using search, the strange thing is that sometimes mail search finds some messages, but after rebuilding spotlight index the search displays other messages with the all messages searched using same search criteria. I have also tried to delete Envelope index file from the Mail folder in usr/library and forced mail to import all mailboxes but it started to crash importing some of mailboxes - I deleted the messages from that mailboxes, imported remaining mailboxes and tried to rebuild mailbox, but everything without a successes. Any ideas how to solve it?

How can I find the location of the signature used in the Adobe Reader signature feature? I've been using the signature feature for a while now and it works great and I'd like to use it on another computer. However, I forgot where I stored the signature. Adobe finds it with no problems (the signature pops up when I click "Place Signature"), but I have no idea where it is.

  • Can't get rid of unread mail icon--shows 2 unread messages but can't find any

I've got a smart mailbox that shows unread messages so I can easily see what new and unread mail I have.  The problem is it gives me the notification icon that indicates I have two unread messages, yet the mailbox does not show any messages as unread...  This isn't a huge problem, but the Mail icon in my dock always shows that I have new mail, and the notification icon is small enough that I can't always clearly see if it's the "usual 2" or a higher number.  What could be causing this and how do I either find the unread messages or get this icon reduced to where it only shows me REAL unread messages?
    Rocketman

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
    Envelope Index
    ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Can't find BES desktop e-mail icon

    Hi All,
I have set up five e-mail accounts on my first BB I bought a few weeks ago. I have icons for all BIS e-mail accounts on my desktop, but I can't find an icon for my BES e-mail account (through Rackspace). I think this icon, if it's there, is called "Desktop." Initially, I just figured my work e-mail didn't have its own icon, and e-mails to that account show only in the "Messages" icon with all the other e-mails, sms, etc.
Then, yesterday, I was downloading some apps and rebooting my BB, and an icon for my BES e-mail showed up (was named "Desktop"). But, it agains disappeared when I downloaded more apps and rebooted the phone. Now, I can't bring the BES desktop icon back.
I tried sending service books, but it didn't bring back the "Desktop" icon. I browsed and clicked pretty much all clickable things on my BB, but can't find anything that would create this "Desktop" icon.
Is creating the BES e-mail icon on the desktop something that has to be done when the account is set up, which was done between my IT person and someone at Rackspace in my case? Or, is there a way for me now to create this icon?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Indeed there is...the Empower BES Inbox application. This solution costs (per user), but does not require a change at the server, and only affects the one user.
    http://www.getempower.com/Empower_BES_MailBox.php
I tried the free trial and it worked great for me. But, before I had to pay, I convinced our BES admins to push out the server-based solution as it comes at no fee, though it does affect all users on that BES server.
    Good luck!

  • Mac Mail: Unread mail counter on dock icon shows "phantom" unread mails

The mailconter of my Mac Mail icon on the dock shows 25 unread messages, but I'm unable to find these inside Mac Mail as unread messages.
I did check all mailboxes and their subfolders for any undread messages that might be inside them, but I didn't find any.
Is there any way to reset or recalculate the unread mail counter for the dock icon?

    Hi Robert
The proposed rebuild did suddenly reveal the 25 unread mails insinde my archive mailfolders. By marking these as read again now shows the correct count of unread mails on the dock icon.
Thanks a lot, your hint was most helpful!

  • On a clean Firefox download I consistantly can't open Firefox because "Windows can't find Firefox.exe" - doesn't look like it's being downloaded.

I have used several download sites including Mozilla's to try and download Firefox. In every case, when the download is "complete", the Firefox icon appears in the taskbar. When I click on it to open Firefox I get this message "Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again." I've searched my computer and FIrefox.exe is not there. When I looked at the files that were downloaded in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox there are quite a number of files including one with the Firefox icon and the name "Firefox". Clicking it once again brings up that can't find Firefox.exe dialog box. I'm on an Acer Aspire with Win 7 32 bit. I did have Firefox on the laptop but a virus forced me to restore the laptop to its original configuration. I've reloaded my programs with the exception of Firefox.

Hello, try these free programs to scan for existing malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

[http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
then, if your laptop in clean try a clean re-install :
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, if exist, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
    Thank you.

  • How do you set Mail to mark a message as "read" only when you open it

I'm using Apple Mail. Works great, but I have one big issue I can't figure out. I want my messages to be marked as read ONLY if I double click or actually physically open the message....not when I click it once with the mouse or if it gets selected in the inbox message pane. The way it's set up, all my mail is read the minute I click on it. This is extremely annoying and I can't find anywhere where you can set this preference. HELP.
does this make sense to anybody??
    OSX Tiger 10.4.7

The OP's question makes sense and Scott's comment is correct. You can have Mail setup so that there is the list of folders on the left, the list of emails in that folder in the top right hand side and the selected message in the pane below that on the lower right hand side. In that case clicking on a message in the list of messages will display it below and Mail will deem you to have read it. On the other hand if you drag down the divider and get rid of the pane in which the message displays then selecting it does not mark it read. Double-clicking it should bring it up in a new window and cause the message to be marked read.
Basically Mail marks the message read when it has displayed (some of) the message in some place (ie a separate window or the lower right hand side pane) where you could have read it

  • Mail not marking messages/conversations as read correctly

    Dear All,
I recently got rid of Outlook for Mac (too buggy) and came back to Mail (much improved during my absence ). I have an Exchange account, plus a GMail and a iCloud. I use Mountain Lion from a Mac Mini and a Macbook Pro, and they both show the same problem.
The problem is the following (occurs at least on the Exchange account - probably also on the others, but I use them less, so I am not 100% sure at the moment):
    1. Certain messages are not marked as read after viewing, and they keep showing as Unread until I mark them as read manually.
    2. in addition to that, when messages are grouped by conversation, the conversations containing some of such messages, in their "collapsed" form, often do not show the last message received as you expect, but some older message - which makes the risk of marking the conversation as read by mistake much more likely, even if there are some truly unread messages in it. You just see an old message/conversation showing as unread, so you just mark it as read, and miss all newer messages. This has already caused a couple of incidents at work, and it's only one week I came back to Mail.
For problem 1. I have seen other threads in Apple Support Communities, but sadly, all the "solutions" are just workarounds - close and reopen Mail, deactivate and reactivate the mail account, mark manually, and so on - I know they work, but the problem is always there, and my guestimate is that it affects 5-10% of the emails I receive, which implies a continuous annoyance, given the number of email we all receive nowadays.
So, I am looking for some real solution, not the usual workarounds which actually do not resolve much. Please please please, spare me the shame to come back to Outlook - I will be grateful forever
    Thank you,
    Alfonso

So it seems nobody has an answer... I have to enjoy marking messages as read manually all day...

  • How to prevent Mail form marking the messages as read when marked?

    I use Mail 3.0 on Leopard (10.5.1).
Each time I click on a message, it automatically marks the message as read.
Is there any way to prevent this from happening? How can i set up a time-delay or switch it off?

I think the only way would be for Apple to implement a delay for marking files as read. Perhaps putting a delay of a second or two would work, so folks can browse through their mail without actually reading it. As it is, though, there's no way to prevent mail from marking a message you browse over.

  • Can't find keyboard on Yahoo Mail

Need help. I was looking at my Yahoo mail in Safari and wanted to reply to an email. When I hit the reply tab everything worked fine but I could not get the key board to show so I could type my response. How can I get the keyboard to come up?

You are probably using the new Yahoo mail. If you switch to 'Classic' mail, you'll find the keyboard comes up OK.
(There is a button on the Yahoo site to switch to Classic).

  • How can I find and retrieve deleted mail?

I made a big mistake yesterday---I renamed a mailbox folder containing multiple sub-folders of all my online and business account emails from two different servers. Then I deleted the old one, but it took all the sub-folders with it! I figured it was in the trash, but it's not. (I haven't emptied it.) I read Ernie's emails and turned Mail off, and went to library, but my pop mailboxes there were empty. I used a Smart mailbox function and went to each server, said include trash, and got two lists of hundreds of old emails. If I can download those again, I could rebuild my files. But how?
I spent a long time online today with a Roadrunner technician, and I can SEE my mail on the server, sitting in my inbox, but I don't know how to download it again to my computer and mail program, and neither does she. If I try to open this mail from my Smart mailbox list on my computer, it insists I cannot open without downloading. Similar situation on AOL.
Is there a chance that the emails the Smart mailbox is indexing are somewhere lost on my own computer?
Thanks for whatever help you can provide!

    You’re welcome.
First of all, messages deleted as a result of deleting the mailbox that contained them don't go anywhere, not even to the Trash. Rather, they are permanently removed from the filesystem.
If the messages are from a POP account configured to leave mail on the server for some time and they are still on the server, you can tell Mail to download them again as described in my first post.
If the messages are not on the server and you don’t have a backup, you may try to salvage as many deleted .emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II or FileSalvage. Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted .emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.
AOL automatically purges your mail from the server after some time, which causes the messages to disappear from Mail as well the next time Mail synchronizes with the server. There is nothing you can do about it other than moving/copying your messages somewhere else to avoid losing them and maybe specify a greater number of days somewhere in AOL’s (not Mail) settings. You can create custom local “On My Mac” mailboxes in Mail, for example, and move/copy your mail there manually or set up rules to do it automatically.
Also, AOL doesn’t let IMAP mail clients such as Mail to create or manage mailboxes at the root level of the account directory on the server, only as subfolders of Saved, which means you should turn OFF Store messages on the server for all the mailboxes in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors, so that Mail stores those mailboxes locally on your computer instead.
Interestingly enough, none of these AOL idiosyncrasies would a problem if AOL accounts could be set up as POP instead of IMAP...

  • Where can I find older versions of Mail for Exchan...

Mail for exchange was unable to start up on my E71 phone so I removed it and installed the updated 3.0.50 version from OVI store. However, from some reason, this is not working with our exchange server - right after connecting I get the "System error, try again later" message. I found 2.07 version somewhere in the Internet and it is partially working. Any idea where can I download the original version that I had (2.09.176)?
I also tried to sync mails only (no calendar/tasks) and this isn't working as well
    Thanks,
    Noam

I got the answer that you can not.

  • Where can I find the thunderbird inbox mails on my MAC ?

    Hi there,
I cannot find the path to get to the emails that are stored in the inbox mail on my MAC.
I have tried the "find" option and spotlight. Don't work

If you right click on a folder and select Properties, the General information tab shows the path to the folder as "Location".

You'll need to ask your email provider for their exact configuration. Server address, ports if different from default etc.
Each Email provider has their own configuration and only they now how it is set up.
Usually there is some kind of documentation outlining this.
