Can't find a way to fix my iPod.

Okay, so I have a 20gb iPod "Photo". I've had it for a few years now and it's acted up many times before. Whenever I start it up it gives me the apple logo and then goes to Sad iPod and shuts off. When I plug it in to my A/C adapter it does the same thing, but then shows the battery charge image, and tries to restart... over, and over again. When I plug it into a computer it will do the same thing. When forced into disk mode it will start up and then show the folder icon. When forced into disk mode and then plugged in it will go to the folder icon and then show the "do not disconnect" screen, and restart itself. The problem originated when my click wheel stopped working so I disassembled it and reassembled it in hopes it would solve my problem. I've taken my iPod apart and fixed it in many cases before due to hard drive issues. I've tried just about anything you can imagine with this thing and I don't know if there is a solution. If the solution requires parts then I'm just going to buy a new iPod, but I just want to know if it is possible to resurrect my poor iPod. I love this thing, please help. I will appreciate any advice given and i'll give it a shot.

Here's my trick for conclusively determining if an iPod hard drive is bad or not, or if the fault lies somewhere in the rest of the ipod.
I have one of these mini external hard drive cases that are for the 1.8" hard drives inside iPods.
[Case for iPod drive on eBay|http://cgi.ebay.com/1-8-USB-Hard-Disk-Drive-CASE-Enclosure-4-Toshiba-IpodW0QQitemZ110314915637QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Drives_Storage_Internal?hash=item110 314915637&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318]
There are other sellers on eBay, but the case has to be the type with the pin connector (like pictured in the listing), not one with the ZIF-type connector (used on the newer iPod drives).
So, what I do is connect the bare iPod hard drive to the connector in the case (no need to close the case). Then I connect it to my Mac using the included USB cable. This way, I am able to test the drive by itself without the rest of the iPod being involved. I +stress test+ the drive using Disk Utility, by doing a +Zero Out Data+ erase. This can take some time, but if it completes this procedure, the drive is probably OK.
In fact, if I now put the drive back into the iPod, it may work when it did not before because you were able to do a thorough reformat of the drive. However, if the iPod still does not work, there is something else wrong with the iPod. Maybe the logic board. But since the drive is good, you can use it in the little case you used for testing and make a shirt-pocket micro hard drive.
But if the +Zero Out Data+ erase stalls or errors out (or the drive does not even appear in Disk Utility), then the drive is definitely bad. It has bad sectors or some other problem. You won't have any use for that little drive case, but at least you know it was the hard drive.
