Can't find classic system folder

I recently bought a used Mac that has OS 10.4 installed on it. Everything works fine except for classic, which doesn't seem to be installed. I was told that I can simply copy the system folder of classic from another mac which already has it installed and I should be good to go. Now, I need to explain to a friend via email how he can locate this folder so he can make me a copy. Can someone tell me just where this classic system folder is located? Is it under the hard drive with the main system folder? I would love to get my classic apps going. Thanks fellas (and chicas).
Regards,
Billy M.

This may work. Keep in mind that if you just drag and drop a copy of a System Folder, you also drag and copy things that may have been installed later on the host machine, such as third party extensions, etc.. that my not work on your machine. If you do this, and have issues, you can drag the System Folder to your trash and be done with it. For the best results, try to find an old OS 9 install disk. There are used ones about, eBay sometimes. The one you want is the retail version of OS 9.1. There were two free updates available to this, still posted in places you can download, to bring it up to 9.2.2, which was the last and latest Classic release version. These may still actually be available on the Apple site, if you know where to look to find them. They are necessary to make your Classic folder more compatible to run in Classic mode within OS X.

It's not where they were always deposited before. But is filled my HD, so I wanna archive it.
Doesn't show up in Spotlight, neither.

Yes, I did a Archive and Install. But there's no sign of it in my System, Root or Personal library. Gonna have to take to calling it Vista, Jr. soon.

    Hmmmm,
You might open a terminal and do a full search from the root directory on out.
Did you have any glitches during the install? If you do a second A&I over a bad one, the file may simply go away. But then, how did you migrate your old stuff over if you have no archive??
    Gotta be there somewhere, right?

  • 10.4.7 Update and Classic System Folder

I installed 10.4.7 with no problems.
However, I needed to start Classic to run an old application, and when it started up, I got a message stating that changes were required. I allowed the changes to be made and the old application started up with no problems.
Today I tried to boot up my QuickSilver using the Classic partition. (I've done this routinely for the last two years to do repair work on my 9.2.2 partition.) The machine would not boot. Instead it booted using my regular 9.2.2 System folder.
When I checked the start-up folders using the OS 9.2 Startup panel, it showed the Classic system as version 9.2.5. (Using the 10.4.7 Startup pane, there is no version given at all, it just states "Mac OS.") The system file was updated during the changes to Classic. The QuickSilver will no longer boot from this partition.
I would still like to boot from the Classic partition. Is there a workaround for this?
    QuickSilver   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    QuickSilver   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Apparently during the "update" of the Classic System folder, there was a glitch. I replaced the Classic System File using the one from my OS 9.2.2 System folder, and I can now boot from the Classic partition AND Classic runs fine from OS 10.4.7.

It looks like that the installation process of one of the applications have caused some trouble. One of them may have changed or added kext files.
For that, the Window server crashed if you try to open a non Apple application like Firefox
Start the system in safe mode by holding the shift key on power on.
If save mode is reached, perform a permissions repair with the Disk Utility.
Don't bother about upcoming warnings like "could not repair file xy" as that occur cause you use the tool on a running system and opened files can not get touched by the tool.
After repair is done reboot system to normal and try to open Firefox.
If the problem persits, please report back here.

  • CS5 Bridge can't find my "Documents" folder

I'm running CS5 on Windows 7 64 bit, downloaded after purchase, if that makes any difference.
"My Documents" is available from the Favoritestab in Bridge, but I can't find My Documents or Documents anywhere in the "Folders" tab, which I would rather use, since its faster to browse a multilevel folder system this way.
I know that My Documents doesn't really exist in Windows 7 and it's more like a mirrored folder or something to help with compatibility, so I wasn't too surprised that it didn't exist in the Folders tab, but usually I can find Documents under C:/Users/MyName/Documents, but that folder doesn't show up either.
Does anyone else have this problem?  Any ideas what might be causing it?

(Repost from "Can't Find My Pictures Folder in Bridge..." with corrections after further testing)
Holy SMOKES, I think I have an ANSWER - or at least enough of one so you can find your "My Pictures" folder.
I've been able to see my account's "My Pictures" folder with Bridge since I started using CS5 in December 2010. For some reason when I started using it again today (Aug. 7, 2011) I could not see it in the Folders panel any more.
My Account's root folder used to appear in the Folders panel under the Desktop folder in the tree. From there I could unfold the tree to the "My Pictures" folder under my account root and off we'd go. Then it wasn't there any more. Despite this I could click on the folder path breadcrumbs field in the upper left corner of the Bridge window and paste the path and see it, and even set it as a Favorite that I could double click in the Favorites panel, but it would not display in the Folders panel. WTF?
What I found was that in my previous session in Bridge I had unchecked the "Show Hidden Files" option in the View menu of Bridge. Once I checked that option again I was able to see my account's root folder under the Desktop folder in the Folders Panel.
So if you can no longer see "My Documents" or "My Pictures" in your Folders panel, go to the View menu and check the "Show Hidden Files" option. It's a good bet you will suddenly see your Account folder show up under the Desktop as soon as you do it.
(Note that I still cannot not find my account when I use the Folder panel to navigate to the C:\Users folder. When i go in that way all I can see is the Public folder. I think it's always been like that, as if Adobe cannot keep up with the latest Windows OS changes. Be that as it may, by checking "Show Hidden Files" you can at least get to your "My Pictures" with the Folders panel by going down from the Desktop node.)

  • I can't find my music folder in my ipod. please help

    Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
     Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.
Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

  • Help with installing a internal HD to make a classic system folder.

Ok so I've been having one **** of a time trying to make this classic system folder (earlier thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2105407&tstart=0 ).
I have the original OS 9.0.4 disk, I didn't save my system folder when I went OS 10.4 so now I'm trying to make one because I can't make one with just 9.0.4 I need to make a 9.2.2 by just updating using IE 5. Should I install the internal HD as a Master Single, Master w/Slave presets, or just Slave then restart on that HD with my OS 9.0.4 disk in holding down c? Then move a copy of the system folder over to the other HD when I get it upgraded?
Hold on I got another idea just replace the HD that's in it now install 9.0.4 upgrade it then move it to my external if it can read it then put the old HD back in and the new one (which should I put that one back in as slave?) and tada.
Which way do you think will be the easiest and less painful way? Also do I make the second internal HD a Slave and the start up one as a Master w/Slave presets?

Yep I just got done doin' just what you said and now I'm updating classic as we speak. Of all the questions I've had with trying to get classic to work I wish I would of thought of this first. Thanx for the simplified way of saying it. I'll post this in my other thread too, too bad I can't say I solved it myself, lmao.

  • I get the "Fast Browser Plugin not loaded" message every time i run  safari and I can't find an MTWB folder anywhere on my hard drive?

I get the "Fast Browser Plugin not loaded" message every time I run  Safari and I can't find an MTWB folder anywhere on my hard drive?  This doesn't seem to be causing a problem, but is a puzzle?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Classic System Folder Not Installed

My hard drive was recently reformatted. The Apple guy installed Tiger and everything else but failed to install the classic system folder. Is it in my Tiger installation CD and can I install it separately or do I have to reformat my computer again? I don't have my Tiger CD with me right now. It's in my other place. I bought the CD separately by the way. My computer was running on Panther before. I really have to know the answers so I won't have to go get the CD for nothing. Thanks.

Classic is not a part of Tiger. If your computer can boot OS 9 then you can reinstall OS 9 from a bootable OS 9 installer CD. If your computer cannot boot OS 9, then you can install the special version of OS 9 from your original installer discs that came with the computer.

I did and followed all the steps except when it asks me to click on My computer, then special folder and can't find the My Music folder to move it. I am using Windows XP....Please help. Has anyone ever had this problems?

    I finally found a solution here: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-xp-support/983948.htm
it's stupid, you have to hold down the shift key while you open iTunes (don't just hold it while you click, keep holding it until iTunes actually shows the library dialog).

I can't sync my ipad photos to windows itunes in Windows 7 because it can;t find a "new folder" How do I fix this?

It's not entirely clear to me, but I assume that you are trying to copy photos from the iPad to your computer (as opposed to syncing photos from your computer to the iPad), possibly using the windows camera wizard ? If so then the message is saying that it can't find a folder called 'New folder' on your computer which is presumably where it copied the last set of photos to (?). I don't use the wizard to copy the photos from iPad (I do it manually via windows explorer) so I don't know how it works, but aren't you able to tell it to copy the photos to a different folder on your computer other than one called 'new folder' ?  This page gives basic info for copying photos from the iPad to your computer http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 (it is not done via iTunes).
If you want to copy photos to the iPad from your computer then there are instructions on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236 - that is done via iTunes using the Photos tab on the right-hand side of iTunes when you've selected the iPad on the left-hand side of it

    to you)
Thanks for your reply....FYI...I was trying to download from www.adobe.com on
the specific page that has downloads of your products.    As far as the
alternate source is concerned I am not totally sure what the capabilities it has as
I am recovering from a hospital stay and had to send my wife to retailer to
pick this up because I am accessing email from home until I return to work and
need something to work now.  I don't yet have the SW.  (I would have had her
buy the actual Adobe Pro 9.0 -- but it is a wapping $499 and change).

  • Trying to install the classic system folder

Hi All, I have 10.4.11 installed on my G4 Cube and would like to use OS9 applications. I understand that I have to use the Classic environment and I have followed the apple instructions to restart the MAC with the OS9 disk and install. However, once I get to the OS9.2.1 desktop. the installer says that I cannot write over my existing OS. I cannot seem to see an option to installed the classic system folder..... The only disks I have access to are Retails OSX 10.4 and retail OS9.2.1.. Any ideas? Thanks Garry

Yes, when booted into 10.4, double click on Macintosh HD on the Desktop, what folders do you see there?
Also, open Disk Utility, click on the whole drive on the left, click on the blue Info button, does it report OS9 Drivers installed like mine...

  • Can't find the plugin folder to add jar file

I installed Adobe Drive 4 in Mac. I want to have our own specified Drive Connector, so I had been trying to put the jar file in the plugin folder, but I didn't even find the plugin folder.
I am using Mac, so I know I should put the file in:
    In Mac OS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/AD4ServiceManager
    In Windows XP: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\AD4ServiceManager
But I can't find the plugin folder there,
    Could anyone please help me?
    thanks a lot,
    Liang

I also installed Adobe Photoshop CS6, Bridge CS6.
The following are how it looks like in Application folder and folder /Library/Application Support/Adobe/AD4ServiceManager

i can not find mozilla firefox folder in Start>All Programs> how can i open firefox in safe mode i am using win7 and firefox 4.ob10 ?

A quick workaround - Go to Start > Run, and paste this in the box: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode
