Can't Find Compressor 3

Here’s my issue.
I used to use Logic 7 Academic. I bought the full version of Logic Pro and installed everything. During installation, the check box for Compressor 3 was grayed-out. I’ve been told that this is because it installs Compressor 3 by default when you install Sound Track Pro.
I never used compressor so I’m not sure if it actually installed.
A few months later I installed Final Cut Express 4. Now that I’m using video, I want to use Compressor 3. The problem is that I can’t find it anywhere on my computer. Further, when I try to reinstall it, I am unable to check the “grayed-out” box to select it as part of the custom install…no matter what I do.
Here’s the strange thing…when I search my computer for “compressor” using spotlight, it finds the user documentation but no program. I’ve looked EVERYWHERE on my computer. The actual program is no where to be found.
Does anyone know how I can install compressor?
One other thing worth noting is that I realize I will not be able to export video directly from FCE 4 to Compressor 3. I will have to export as a quicktime movie first and then open it in Compressor. I’m OK with that…if I could just get Compressor on my machine.
Thanks in advance.
Steve
10.4.11 – Mac Pro

Hi from Rome Italy. I have successfully installed my copy on an iMac and mac book, at different times, and so thought to simply transfer to the new macbook pro. Not to be, as as in your case the compressor installer does not make itself available. Once I had thought logic Pro 8 installed I discovered Soundtrack Pro will not even launch and of course Compressor seems not to exist.
Given that my Macbook pro is brand new and the Logic Studio disks are in perfect condition I asked my dealer to advice me or have a look. They refused unless I paid! New macs and expensive software deserve better service.
Now I am trying the Pacifist solution and hope to have a result. Can you report on if and how you resolved the problem?
Regards,

  • Can't find background processes in compressor 2.0.1

I am working with Compressor 2.0.1 and have been trying to convert FCP files to burn to a dvd but when I go to submit a batch, I keep getting a window saying that it cannot submit because it can't find the background processes.  I tried reseting the background processes several times but it still won't do anything.  I recently upgraded my mac operating software to 10.5.8, could this have something to do with it?
    Thanks for any help,

After burning a successful DVD in iDVD out of FCPX, how can I see the settings it used?
So I finally burned a DVD out of a Apple Pro Res file into iDVD in PAL format. My question now is how can I find out what the exact burn properties were so that I can apply the same burn properties to a project in Compressor 4?
Is it possible to see what iDVD did?

I don't know any way you can interrogate iDVD to reveal settings to the extent that you can in a Compressor project. What you could do is open up the show's VOB in MPEG STreamclip, go to File and Reveal Stream Information; that will at least give you some rudimentary info like average bit rate. Perhaps someone, with more iDVD experience, can chime in here.
The broader question is why use Compressor at all if your current workflow is doing the job to your satisfaction?
The value of Compressor is that it gives you control over the many parameters that affect size quality.  and playability. The Compressor presets can give you a starting point for DVD delivery, Web, etc. From those presets, people typically experiment by adjusting the parameters until they get the desired results for their specific show. It's a little bit science and a little bit art. After experimenting, you may be able to get slightly better quality for the project you've successfully burned in iDVD by using Compressor and something likeToast…or maybe not.
    Good luck.

  • I can't reinstall Compressor!

Okay, I'm having the same problem as everyone else....can't find background process, etc.
So I deleted all that I was supposed to...I've got FCS1 w/ Compressor 2. I put the DVD studio disc in to reinstall Apple Qmaster and Compressor. When I get to the screen on which apps to install I can deselect DVD studio and I can toggle on Apple Q....but for some reason I can not select to install Compressor.
Compressor is grayed out and it won't let me check it! Is there something that I didn't delete that is causing this? I have had and used compressor for that past 2 years...now what? I recently installed Leopard...if I were to reinstall Tiger would that help or fix this problem? And would I just put the install discs for Tiger to get rid of Leopard?
Am I the only one that is having this problem? Along w/ the many other problems.

I would suggest downloading AppZapper for a clean uninstall. After that, you don't start with the DVD Studio Pro disc. Start with the Final Cut disc. That will give you the full menu of the things to install.
I too have FCS1 and have done everything I can to get this to work per all the instructions out there, but it still won't. I can't even get Batch Monitor to reinstall.

  • Where can I find/download A.Pack?

I can't open AC3 files with Compressor and I can't find good oldie A.Pack installation disc anywhere. Is there a download link / how can require A.Pack from Apple?

AFAIK no way an Ac3 file can be a DTS audio file ! Are different audio types. AC3 files are Dolby digital.

  • Can't find audio

Have tried twice to encode a piece using compressor. Video turns out nice (turns it out s l o w l y but nice)
Don't know how it turns out audio because I can't find it, twice.
Selecting entire project in timeline submitting it to compressor. Simple setting under 60 minutes, SD, Audio AC3. Press submit, go to bed, wake up next morning, go to IHop, eat breakfast, come home compressor says "successful".
Liar liar pants on fire. There's no audio. I'm sure it's pilot error. Help?

The way I do this is to Export a QuickTime Movie and choose a location on my media volume. Then close FCP and open Compressor, drag the QT file to the Batch window, sending the MPEG2 and the AC3 files to a location on my media volume, and start squishing.
You can also make the QT movie a reference movie, but even though it takes longer, I like to create a new QT movie because it helps to ID the genesis of any problems later.

  • Where can I find explanations for all the export options?

[ Re-posting this from the iPhoto & iDVD branches ]
When I export a slideshow in iPhoto 9, choose 'Custom export' and then hit the 'Options' button, a dialog pops up with Video & Sounds options that can further be explored. In the Video section, I can click on the 'Settings' button, amongst others, to reveal lots of things that can be tweaked (Compressor Type, Motion, Data Rate & Compressor).
Where can I find help and explanations of what all these settings do, when to change them, why they should be changed, to what values and what effects these all have on the overall output?
Apple has a user manual for FCE4 on their web-site and I recognise some of these iPhoto slideshow export settings from similar dialog boxes from within FCE4. Does a user manual for iPhoto 9 exist also? I can't find it on Apple's web-site.
It has been suggested to me that these are all standard QT settings/options - hence the re-post to this forum.

It's always been up to each user to find all of the "hidden gems" in any OS software. Most of us experiment, test, try, fail and try again with all the options. Along the way we learn what works, what doesn't. I've played, poked and prodded QuickTime Pro for the last ten years and even wrote a "book" about it. I have over 200 bookmarks to resources and links that help me sort things out.
    Onto some answers:
    1. on your list is actually a three part question. Since you probably can't burn a true "HD" DVD we'll leave that part out.
You can easily "share" your iPhoto files with iDVD and burn in SD 16:9 format. You need to learn nothing about the compression options as iDVD will do all of the work. The Web based file formats (from the same source file) are an easy "trick" in QuickTime Pro.
QuickTime Pro includes an export option "Export for Web" that will make up to 4 "versions" of your source file and even write the html code for you to copy/paste into your Web pages. It creates up to 4 versions (iPhone, iPod, Desktop and cell phone) with just one export and writes html page code that can "read" your connected visitors "speed" to serve up just the right file for the device.
Your number 2 question is answered by your SD DVD media device. Can't make a sow's ear into a silk purse. But you could use QuickTime Pro export options to create a "true" HD file and display it on your HD TV. If your HD TV includes HDMI connections (and all should) you could either connect your camera directly to the TV (via cables) to display the "raw" video captures or use iTunes (free) application to export HD video to an appliance like Apple TV.
My "book" (a downloadable PDF) does include an explanation about nearly all of the QuickTime available codecs but it's probably not needed for your particular workflow. The built-in preset exports are all you probably need to use.
Compression type = file format (AVI, MP3, MOV, etc.).
Motion = frame rate allows you to change the source frame rate to meet the restrictions of your delivery media (nearly always adjusted to reduce file size for Web delivery). E.G source is 30 fps and delivery is 15 fps (reduces file size).
Key frames = "special" frames of the video that either "predict" or "optimize" for the delivery media format. The Export for Web feature of QuickTime Pro defaults should be all you need.
Quality slider = is "optional" but usually defaults to "medium". In most cases this is best left at the default setting.
Dimensions = file size dimensions. Well crafted, H.264 video codec QuickTime files will look very good when displayed at up to twice the file export dimension. This means you can display a Web based 640X480 file at "Full Screen" size (display resolution) without much degradation of video quality. Older codecs will not look as good when doubled in size.
Preserve Aspect ratio = just what it says. Widescreen source = widescreen display.
    De-interlace source = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deinterlacing
Hope this helps you sort things out.
Data rate = the amount of compression (data limit)

  • Can't find local cluster

So I recently migrated to a new hard drive since my laptop just ran out of warranty. Everything was working fine I just wanted a faster one.
I used SuperDuper to make a true direct copy and everything seemed to running smooth. Until I launched compressor. Because batch monitor can't find even my local computer as a cluster, I can not encode anything. I tried removing compressor, then re-installling it several times but no luck.
Is there a way for me to solve this without re-installing my laptop, please!

  • Can't reinstall Compressor 3

    Can't reinstall Compressor 3.
OK.. so don't ask how, but I managed to delete the compressor app from my apps folder.
Thing is, when I try to reinstall, the option is greyed out.
Anyone know what I need to do to reinstall it?
I'm thinking there are some library files or something needs to be deleted or modified. I reinstalled Compressor 2 which came with my FCS I, but it just lies there when I click it.
Any help would be much appreciated as it is much needed!
    Tim

i had this problem and the solution i used was as follows: ctr click on the logic install icon. Go to 'Show Original'. It will jump to the proper intaller. Next to this you will see a folder that contains all the proper install mpkg files. you should find the compressor install package there. run this and it should install.

  • Can I find out the peak of Output 1-2 without having to play whole track?

Can I find out the peak of Output 1-2 without having to play whole track? I am preparing my album for mastering and I was told to have each track peak at no more than -2dB. Is there an offline peak detector or maybe another trick people use?

You should deliver your mixes to the mastering house in 24bit format. They should be converted to 16bit and dithered AFTER the mastering. Also, as long as the mixes are not overloaded, the levels could be handled in mastering also. That's what mastering is about, matching the perceived levels between the tracks. As far as your last question, "Do you just slap a multipressor on the output at that point and call it mastered?" the answer is heck no. I'd suggest selecting some professionally mastered cds in your genre, and put a few into your "mastering song" in logic and use them to compare to your mixes. Play with the mastering tools (multi compressor, EQ, adlimiter, etc) on your tracks and try to bring them into the ballpark with the reference songs. It will take a while to get a handle on it, but with practice, it will get you there.

  • Can't find the horizontal Level Envelope

I'm making a CD with a bunch of my songs; on some of them, the wave form is skinny, because their volume is lower, and I want to even them up so that the listener isn't turning the volume up and down from song to song.
I found instructions to do this by adjusting the level of the skinny (i.e. quieter) regions. It says "Move the pointer over the horizontal Level Envelope that you want to adjust. The pointer changes to the level envelope tool and a help tag displays the original and adjusted values." However, I can't see the line, and my pointer does NOT change to a level envelope tool. What do I need to change so that both these things appear?
Also, if there's an easier way to achieve my goal, that would be great (I tried normalizing the tracks, but that didn't help).
    Thanks!!

You don't see the line which ends with a ◊ at each end, like this?
Also, if there's an easier way to achieve my goal, that would be great (I tried normalizing the tracks, but that didn't help).
Adjusting the overall level probably won't get you too far - you can have a song, with a couple of loud peaks, that will appear to be much quieter than an intentionally softer song with controlled peaks. Normalizing won't help.
The key here is that you want to increase the perceived volume (levels), which has nothing to do with the peak levels. 0 dBFS cannot be exceeded - it's the absolute maximum. So to get your tracks louder, you need to increase your apparent volume, often referred to as the average RMS level.
A good way to try this is to open your mix in a fresh Logic project (I prefer doing it there instead of WaveBurner, but whatever you prefer). You could try first applying a compressor, threshold set so that any peaks are controlled. You can use a compressor or a multiband compressor, but be careful; the latter can really mess up your mix unless you're careful and practice a lot.
Next, insert the Adaptive Limiter. Find the peak in your song, and set the left (Input Margin) side of AdLimiter so that you get close, but never go over 0 dB. on the right, set AdLimiter's output to -0.3 dB and crank the gain control to taste. At the bottom of AdLimiter's window, click the disclosure triangle, and set Mode to "NoOver.' You will change the character of the sound doing this; it's up to you if you like it or not, but you can definitely get your track loud.
There are lots of threads here and in the Logic forums about this. Try searching on AdLimiter, compression and mastering.

  • How do I export my video in 500x500 resolution? I know there's a feature in Final Cut Express that allows me to make custom dimensions when I export but I can't find the same in FCPX

How do I export my video in 500x500 resolution? I know there's a feature in Final Cut Express that allows me to make custom dimensions when I export but I can't find the same in FCPX.

Tom is right, BUT! ...the newest version of Compressor (41.) allows you to do just THAT! ...to export custom sizes.
It's easy. And... once you set it up, you can export DIRECTLY from FCPX, provided you've saved / added this scheme as a "destination" in the FCPX app.

My mail keeps dropping out of my iPhone every time I open my windows mail. I changed the windows mail option to leave messages on the server, but can't find the advanced Rabin my iPhone mail settings.  Help!

Perhaps it would be best if you could post a screen shot of your original video.  For example, open it in QT Player and hit command i. Take a screen shot of the image and the movie inspector.
All of the functions and their adjustments that used to be grouped in Geometry in previous versions of Compressor are now located in the integrated video pane of the Inspector.
