Can't Find iPhoto Library File

I'm going crazy here! I cannot find the iPhoto Directory file I need to locate to delete it and create a new file in my external drive.
I can't seem to find an indication in the Preferences section of the program itself either.
I've done a search with the name, I've looked everywhere in Finder, Library, User directories, etc. I can't say I've looked EVERYWHERE because obviously that file is somewhere!
Any ideas? It just doesn't seem to be where it would normally be defaulted to. Somewhere in time I must have moved it.

Niel, thank you very much for your response. Mystery solved and found the "iPhoto Library" folder.
However, I discovered a bizarre condition. Not sure if you can shed light on this, but here it is:
The file exists in a sub directory which trails back to a main folder that seems to not exist. In other words, I cannot path down to this file from a drive to folder to sub folder in Finder. That main root directory is not showing in Finder!
Maybe this is a clue: The directory when I follow your search commands lists the folder location starting with "/Volumes/..." I don't have any directories or drives with that starting name.
Any comments on this mystery is appreciated.

  • IPhoto can't find iPhoto Library files

    Hi All,
I have a older iMac running 10.4, 512MB RAM.  It was running very slowly and reading other posts figured my large iPhoto library (iPhoto 6) was the culprit.  I moved all but 2011 pictures to an external hard drive and deleted files from my iPhoto Library (did this through the Finder, not iPhoto).  I can see my .jpg files on the external drive and can see the 2011 .jpg files on my HD in the iPhoto Library.  When I launch iPhoto, I have no photos.  Within iPhoto I've tried to "import to library" and select my 2011 folder of .jpg's but the file is "unreadable".  I've tried changing the location of my iPhoto Library folder and "chose library" but that hasn't worked either.
I think I may have deleted some file or path that allows iphoto to access the iphoto library folder (I copied back a "data folder" from the external HD but that didn't solve my problem) but I can't figure out what it could be.  Can anyone help?  I am just barely literate and apparently, know just enough to get myself into trouble, so "dumbed down" instructions would be very much appreciated.
Thanks for any help you can lend!
    Shannon

believe it or not, but I did do some research before I started...  I was just trying to back up files and create space - don't you people advocate for that kind of thing?
I don't think that I did not follow your link... I did not move the entire contents of my original library, just most, I wanted... well it doesn't matter - I was able to solve the problem following a tip posted by "Old Toad" found below.
Thanks for trying to help - I'm just glad I can see my photos again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

Hard drive packed up, but had Time Machine backup. I installed new ssd and upgraded to Mountain Lion, but I can't find iPhoto library and photos or iTunes songs? Is there an answer to this?  A backup run did not install either photos or songs. Graham

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

  • Can't copy iPhoto Library file

I am trying to copy my iPhoto library from one mac to another. I have them connected with an Ethernet cable. The library is about 90 GB. When I drag the library file over it appears to copy about 1/5 of the file (judging by the blue line) and then it stops and says something like, "the iPhoto Library file already exists."
Anyone have any ideas? I certainly checked the target drive/folder and don't see any previously existing library file sitting there.
    Thanks in advance!

There must be something more to this problem. I don't think that it is iPhoto library specific b/c I have the same sorts of error when copying other folders of data between the two computers. Strangely enough, when I initiate the copy command from the other computer (the one that has the files I want to copy), it works without a hitch. I guess I'll just do it that way.
    Thanks.

  • Can't find iPhoto library in Finder

I want to move my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and have read posts about how to do this but I have one problem - my iPhoto library is no where to be found in Finder.  It's not in the Pictures folder, Media is not even listed on the right hand side, so I can't look there, like some postings have suggested.  Any ideas where it's hiding or how to find it?  I'm using iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3 with OS X 10.8.3

Select any of the photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder Window should open with the file selected.
In the Finder's Column View you can track back to the Library's location.

  • HT4927 Using Time Machine but can't find iphoto library anywhere for replacement

I'm having issues with a few wierd duplicate iphoto Events so I thought I would use my Time Machine for the 1st time and just restor the Library ONLY (not all of iphoto, just the library) to sometime last month and go from there. BUT....................
Nothing I have seems to match any useful info I can find on this forum. My iMac is OSX 10.8.2/iphoto 11 vs9.4.2 (everything is latest-updated)
I go into Time Machine, pick a date from early last month, and I see....."All My Files/ Desktop/Applications/Documents" then in Devices are
my external drives. Thats  it. Where is the "iphoto library"? I feel like I'm missing something. When I look up the subject in this forum under Time Machine, it says to open Finder 1st (why I don't know), then open Time Machine (of course) but the sample picuture of Apples Website of Time Machine doesn't look like my Time Machine as I've just described.
Even in FINDER I see All My  Files/Desktop/Applications/Documents: nothing that says "iphoto Library" (I can find "iPhoto" in Applications, but the application is fine, it's just the  messed up 4 or 5 events I want to fix by going back to my library from last month, which was fine).
I assume that I need to:
    1-close iphoto (done)
2-open Time machine and pick my date (done)
3- here is my problem (i think): I don't see a "iphoto library" to click on and then click on something that says "replace". I've never had to use time machine so I don't know what it will look like.
    Please help,

By default the iPhoto library is in your pictures folder
you choose the one you want from a "finder looking display" and click restore (there is no "repalce")
althought the Mac is great and easy to use, every software program does have a learning curve and it is worth reading the instructions - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Can't find iphoto library after time machine migration of 2011 imac to osx 2014 imac

I recently purchase latest 5K Retina display iMAC with Yosemite. Had a 2011 Intel iMAC it had a flash drive with latest iphoto library. An older iphoto library was located on the standard HD on the 2011 iMAC. EVerything on this computer was backed up with Time capsule.
When I purchased new computer, I used migration assistant and the Time capsule to migrate files to new iMAC. The newer iphot libray is present but cant find the older one.
    What did I do wrong?

Download Find Any File (www.macupdate.com) and do a search for the library.

  • Comic life can not find iphoto library

I am working on Mac OS X version 10.5.8 and iPhoto 09. In the past I had no problem using Comic Life Deluxe version 1.5.2 but about 3 months ago my Comic life could not find my iPhoto library. This is the message I get when I click on the tab...
Comic Life cannot find your iPhoto Library.
Perhaps you are not using iPhoto or your iPhoto Preferences are out of date?
Both my iPhoto and Comic Life are up to date. The finder tab and capture tab are working on Comic Life. I have tried an old fix I found posted but that did not work either (com.apple.iPhoto.plist)
    Any ideas out there?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try deleting the iPhoto preference file again, the com.apple.iApps.plist file and the Comic LIfe preference file. Reboot and launch iPhoto and then Comic Life and see if that helped.

  • IPhoto can't find Aperture library files

Since Apple added the ability to open Aperture libraries in iPhoto, I've been unable to so with my main Aperture library.  If I create a new library in Aperture, no problem.  Upgraded the library when the latest versions were released, performed all command-option first aid when opening, multiple times, duplicated, moved the library between different drives, relocated originals (it was completely managed), checked and played with permissions, all to no avail.  When I open iPhoto, it brings up a notification that it's updating thumbnails.  Then I immediately get the error "The photo “xxxxxxxx.JPG” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."  I cancel and another immediate error, this continues on seemingly forever, and, with thousands of pictures in the library, I've basically got to Force Quit.  The library is on an external drive and I've tried this on 3 Macs with the same result.  If I'm within Aperture and search for any of the photos that iPhoto couldn't find, they're there and Aperture can show me them in the Finder.  However, what I noticed today is that if I perform a manual search from the Finder of the library, it doesn't find the file.  Oddly, if there are similar names; img_001 and img_001(1), searching for "img_001" won't show the first exactly matching file at all, but will show the second.  Although, I can browse and they're sitting there right next to each other.  Again, same behavior on multiple Macs.  I'm thinking that the Finder behavior and iPhoto issue may be related.  Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave

    Léonie,
    Results as follows:
    Mac-Mini:~ Dave$ ls -B /Volumes/My\ Passport\ for\ Mac/Photos/IMG_0030.JPG
    /Volumes/My Passport for Mac/Photos/IMG_0030.JPG
    Mac-Mini:~ Dave$ ls -B /Volumes/My\ Passport\ for\ Mac/Photos/IMG_0030\ \(1\).JPG
    /Volumes/My Passport for Mac/Photos/IMG_0030 (1).JPG
The first command shows one of the problem files.  Second command shows a similar file that has no issues. Nothing apparent problems to me from this test.
I also copied the problem file along with the non-problem file with the similar filename (1) to my desktop.  When I begin any search string, the problem file disappears.  If I completely rename it including extension, it disappears. If I make a copy and change it's name, neither show up.  It seems as though there is some attribute of this file, all copies, and a bunch of others in my photo database, that is causing some kind of issue.  I've taken a look at both file's info and there appears to be no differences, including permissions.  Appears to be more of a file system/finder problem.  I may try a different community.
    Thanks again.

I Just converted my iPhoto library to Photos. Now I can't find my RAW files. I need to have all the images in my old library show up in their RAW format.

Unfortunately no - Photos use extensions and the vendor (adobe) will have to implement the extension to allow external edits in PS or PSE
For now you must export the photo, edit and then import - not great but a work arond
And you can continue to use iPhoto until Photos meets your needs - launch it in your applications folder - if you need assistance on this see Why won't my iPhotos open?

  • TS4213 Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?

Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?
Examples of what is going on:
    1. In Pages, Numbers & Keynote, when I go to the media browser the Audio section reads "Open iTunes to populate this list" even after iTunes has been opened, .xml file has been replaced/repaired, etc  AND Photo section reads "Open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list" even after iPhoto Library has been replaced and new default library created.
    2. In iMovie, similar thing ... when I go to add photos or music to a movie the iTunes files aren't present and the iPhoto photos are missing with similar messages as in #1.
    3. In iPhoto, similar thing ... when I go to add music to a slideshow it says to "Open iTunes to populate this list".
It is shocking to me that Apple would let something as simple as a pathway link to associated library files get this messed up on an upgrade, but what's even more surprising is that with the number of people who seem to be having this particular issue (and I can tell from all the research that I've done for weeks online that there are a lot of them) that there doesn't seem to be a single clear answer to fixing it anywhere on these community support forums.  Most of what I've seen is rehashed advice from outdated issues.  What I need is a simple answer to how do we get these programs to look for the correct location of the photo and music files because I sure can't seem to find any logical place to do that through the programs' preferences files or the system preferences window?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    P.S. Here's the details on the software/hardware:
    MacBook Pro
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.7.5
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    iTunes 11.0.4 (4)
    iPhoto '11 9.4.3 (720.91)
    iMovie '11 9.0.9 (1795)
    Keynote '09 5.3 (1170)
    Pages '09 4.3 (1048)
    Numbers '09 2.3 (554)

I have the same problem on a new MacBook Pro. I have not been able to access the iTunes library from iPhoto since I got this computer. I looked in the Preferences file and deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist but there was no com.apple.iApps.lockfile so I just deleted the iAPPs.plist and rebooted the computer.  Still no iTunes available in iPhoto.
All my music is in iTunes and plays. After reading the above I brought up Pages and I was able to access music and insert a track into a document.
    Do you have any suggestions.

  • How can I copy my iPhoto library file to my other macs?

I have 4 Mac's and I've kept all my photos on one of them primarily. How can I find the iPhoto library file and copy it to the other Macs?

There are two apps that can do that for your.
1 - the better of the two is  iPhoto Library Manager.  You will have to manually select those Events in Library A that are not in Library B and copy them to B.  Then do the same for B to A.  This also copies both the original and edited versions, keywords, titles, descriptions, faces and places.
2 - the second app is SyncPhotos.  This one is automatic and will copy the original images in A that are not in B into B and the same for B to A. This does not copy edited versions or any of the metadata, i.e. keywords, etc.

    You can't do that.
And before you decide to store any music that you own on a computer at work, talk to your IT department. Many organizations do not permit it for legal reasons. Standard policies are that anything stored on company owned computers is the property of the company. It could not be legally stored on their machines unless you transfer the licenses and all copies, physical and digital, to the company, meaning you no longer own the music. If they were to be audited and could not prove that they own the music, they would be subject to copyright violation penalties. Just use your iPod when you're at the office if you want to listen to music.

    Hello Wayne,
well recently did the update for iphoto ....and i can't find my library or any of my pictures! I tried the same procudere that you suggested for numbers and pages, but that did not work. I don't even see the previous iphoto...Do you have any suggestions for this?
    Thank you.

Sorry but you need to give details to get help. What version of iPhoto? Of the OS? What upgrade did you just do? Who is Wayne - never sevens anyone named Wayne in this forum? What was the procedure tat was recommended (I doubt that any trouble shooting hints for numbers or pages would apply to iPhoto)?

After an iTunes update I now. Can't  access my library as iTunes can't find my .itl file. Any ideas how to rectify this?

Your iTunes Library.itl file will normally be at C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. If it isn't there should it be somewhere else (you ought to know if you deliberately moved it) or is there a Previous iTunes Libraries folder containing backups made during iTunes updates.
