Can't find my desktop.

Migrated data from my Powerbook with Snow Leopard to my new iMac with Lion. I am the Admin and only user. But the desktop I see on the iMac doesn't show anything, not even hard disk icons. So where is the desktop with my stuff?

Can't find Agent Desktop for CME

I know it sounds ridiculous but I can't find the Desktop Agent for a CME and CCX integration. Let me explain a bit more.
The scenario is quite simple: one CME on a 2911 that must be integrated with a CCX 8.5. I have successfully setup the CME and CCX (at least I supose) but now the only problem I have is to find the Agent Desktop. I have installed several CCX but always integrated with Callmanager withoit Express. On every occasion, on the plugins menu there were 3 links to download Administrator, Supervisor and Agent Desktops. But in this case there are only 2 links: one for Administrator and one for Supervisor/Agent. Obviously I tried installing the msi file that you download when click the Supervisor/agent link but only the Supervisor is installed.
I'm sure it must be a silly question but I'm blocked with that issue. Any help?

The most likely cause of this is that you are running UCCX Standard, which does not come with CAD.
You'll want to read the data sheet for UCCX to familiarize yourself with the feaatures offered between versions, deployments, and licensing.
Also, with UCCX/CME, CAD does not do Phone Control. E.g., You cannot answer the phone from within CAD.

Can't find my desktop photo

I have a photo I took as my desktop photo on my account on one of the home iMacs. I can't find that photo anythere. It isn't in my iPhoto library. It isn't in the folder with all of the standard OS X desktop photos. Yet there it is as my desktop photo. I also can't find the safari folder that older OS X versions keep photos, thinking it might be there.
Any idea where I can hunt for this photo

Open Terminal, type (or copy/paste) this command at the flashing prompt and press return:
defaults write com.apple.dock desktop-picture-show-debug-text -bool TRUE
Next, type this command and press return:
killall Dock
This will show the location of your Desktop picture in the middle of the image on your Desktop. Note the location, and find the image. After you've found it, you can return your Desktop to normal by entering this command in Terminal, then pressing the return key:
defaults write com.apple.dock desktop-picture-show-debug-text -bool FALSE
And, again, enter the following in Terminal and press return:
killall Dock

Can't find BES desktop e-mail icon

Hi All,
I have set up five e-mail accounts on my first BB I bought a few weeks ago. I have icons for all BIS e-mail accounts on my desktop, but I can't find an icon for my BES e-mail account (through Rackspace). I think this icon, if it's there, is called "Desktop." Initially, I just figured my work e-mail didn't have its own icon, and e-mails to that account show only in the "Messages" icon with all the other e-mails, sms, etc.
Then, yesterday, I was downloading some apps and rebooting my BB, and an icon for my BES e-mail showed up (was named "Desktop"). But, it agains disappeared when I downloaded more apps and rebooted the phone. Now, I can't bring the BES desktop icon back.
I tried sending service books, but it didn't bring back the "Desktop" icon. I browsed and clicked pretty much all clickable things on my BB, but can't find anything that would create this "Desktop" icon.
Is creating the BES e-mail icon on the desktop something that has to be done when the account is set up, which was done between my IT person and someone at Rackspace in my case? Or, is there a way for me now to create this icon?
Any help would be appreciated.

Indeed there is...the Empower BES Inbox application. This solution costs (per user), but does not require a change at the server, and only affects the one user.

I tried the free trial and it worked great for me. But, before I had to pay, I convinced our BES admins to push out the server-based solution as it comes at no fee, though it does affect all users on that BES server.

Finder stuck, can't find all desktop files including HD and eternal drives

Just installed the new Leopard. When I turn the computer on it brings the screen up minus all desktop files. Can't find any icon for Stack. I can access email and Safari (internet) but my Firefox won't work.
I tried putting in the Leoaprd installation disk again but with Finder spinning nothing happens. I can find some new icons in the dock (Downloads, Documents and Time Machine).
I have a backup copy of my files on an external drive but without Finder I can't access them.
Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem except I have access to everything for 30 seconds, then everything disappears except the new background image. Nothing I click seems to change anything. I've wiped the drive with an archive and install to see if that fixes the issue.

I can't find my Desktop folder on any of my TM backups

This is my first forum post, and I'm downright desperate.
I have migrated from my old MBP to a brand new one this weekend, and used Time Machine in an external HD to move my data. I had TM set up since February, with no options/exceptions.
As far as I can tell, everything migrated to the new computer perfectly (applications, preferences, documents, music, cookies, etc) except there is nothing on my Desktop after migration. It just so happens that I have (had?) a folder in my Desktop with all my graduate school work.
I have already looked in TM in all the backups since February, and there is no Desktop folder in my user account folder in any of them. Does this mean that TM has never backed up my Desktop from the beginning???
(BTW, I'm also having trouble to simply search for specific files when I look into the TM backup folder in my external HD. Whenever I use Spotlight, it only finds stuff on other folders in that external HD, but it doesn't return any hits from the TM backup folder, even when I look for files that I can see there just by browsing. How can I solve this?)

Trouble is, I had Leopard reinstalled at the Apple Store when I bought the new computer, since the system was supposedly backed up. As far as I know, the old computer was wiped clean and Leopard reinstalled in about 20 minutes by a Genius.
I have been told by them after the fact to use Data Rescue II to try and scour the old computer's internal drive by booting it up in target mode, but I haven't attempted it yet. I was told that if the Leopard reinstall was done in a specific way, I would be able to get to the old files with Data Rescue II still with their names and folder structures if they haven't been overwritten. However, if it was done 'another way', I would have lost the folders and any recovered files would be restored to a new location under a generic name like 'recover000001'. I'm afraid that in this case I will be overwhelmed by all the files in my old system (even if DRII supposedly recognizes file types), and I won't be able to sort through all of them to get at my important work.
Does anyone know what is the best way to get my data back???? It will be two years of work down the drain if I can't access the contents of that folder on my old Desktop.

I don't understand. Why would it be that TM did not backup my Desktop? The Geniuses were not able to answer this question. I'm completely sure I didn't mark any exceptions when I set it up in February, and I've read other people also had similar problems with some of their folders and/or files (there's another thread where another user lost his Downloads folder; I accidentally replied to it instead of creating this new topic -- my apologies).

you have to use spotlight from TM interface, not directly from finder. start TM, scroll to a backup and use the search field to start a search.

I didn't have any problems with the old computer. I was actually giving it to my mother for Mothers Day as her first Mac, and I wanted to make sure she would have as 'brand new' Mac experience as I could provide her.

this is your one and only hope of getting anything back if you did an erase and install. if you did an archive and install then old your old data will be in the "previous systems" folder at the top level of the hard drive.

Thanks. You reckon professional data recovery services would come up with more stuff (especially filenames and folder structures) than I would be able to, if I tried using DR myself? I'm terrified of going through my whole HD and sorting out the hundreds of thousands of files that weren't in the desktop in the first place.
I appreciate your help, V.K.; I still cannot get over the fact that TM can be so unreliable. What could have caused this catastrophe on my computer and in other users? They were lucky that they still had their data when they noticed TM wasn't backing it up, and the solutions were bone-chillingly similar to Windows voodoo tricks (e.g. delete the old TM plist, hard reboot, pray, and see if it works now). If this is the case, I can't see any options other than doing full manual backups periodically, but that defeats the TM purpose in the first place. Any thoughts or ideas?

Can't Find Change Desktop Background in System Preferences... and other ???

I can't remember the last time I changed my desktop background, but it's been on the default plain blue. I tried to change it recently, and I cannot find the option to change background pictures in the System Preferences. I tried right-clicking on the desktop and used the context menu. That launched system preferences, kind of... the program opened, but the viewer did not... the actual window with all the options. I don't think my computer can find it either! I read a few discussions on this topic, and found to delete the plist from preferences folder.. tried that to no avail. Please help.

Sorry to take so long to post back for you.
I found a screenshot of the System Preferences for 10.2 Jaguar and I see that you have two separate preference panes for Desktop and Screen Effects. In my Panther, the two were combined as one pane known as Desktop and Screensavers.
In the row below the toolbar of your System Preferences (It should be called Personal for that bar of preference "panes") there should be an icon for "Desktop".

Is that not what you are seeing when you open System Prefences? If the Desktop pane is missing then it sounds as if it has somehow become deleted or corrupted.
I use Application Enhancer, windowshade, uControl, and Lite switch. They are all properly registered, but the icons are weird at the bottom... almost squished together? And the International icon shows up 3 times in System Preferences, once in Personal and twice in Other, where the other programs are located as well.
Third party hacks such as those can wreak havoc on the OS and things can become corrupted and cause a variety of system problems. It may very well be that that is what is causing the anomalies with your Desktop pictures/preferences.
Personally, I would uninstall them, if possible, and Repair Permissions from Disk Utility and try applying the 10.2.8 Combo update from Apple's downloads.
Back when I was using 10.2.8 I remember many problems users were having with system hacks like those back then. Perhaps others here may have a simpler approach to straightening out your situation.

Can't find a Desktop with the right specs.

Hi i am looking to buy a Desktop from best buy and i wanted to know if there is a way i can have the following specs:
-An intel core i7-2600 quad core processor (64 bit)
-Full tower
-6-8gb of ram
-1 tb hard drive
-19-20" monitor (possibly dual)
-a70 corsair CPU cooler (any type of cooler that is compatible with my i7-2600 quad core)
-for my oprating system i wanted vista (unless you have a better suggestion)
-I can't decide on a graphics card- i was looking at either a Radeon HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 OR a GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB GDDR5. (I have heard good things about gtx cards.)
Obviously these are the main specs i wanted and not every little detail is covered here. I wanted to know 2 things: 1.) can best buy make this for me? 2.) how much will this cost me.

1) Fairly easy, there's a few computers out there with that CPU.

5) Easy, but most packages only come with one monitor, but still easy
6) Not likely out of the box, though you can add that on after if you want
7) Not possible unless you want to purchase a copy of Vista and load it. 7 is the way to go.
8) That'll just greatly depend on the brand/model of the computer, though I'll recommend the 560TI as I have one.
To answer your bottom questions though, no, Best Buy doesn't custom build machines. You're probably looking around $100-$1500*if you do dual monitors.

It's not completely obvious. What you have to do in Spaces is to position your cursor to the upper right of the screen, after which faint + (plus) sign appears in that area. Click that, upon which another Desktop will appear.
The + may be difficult or impossible to see with some desktop backgrounds (black, for instance):

HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z is USB to desktop running Windows 7. I am XP Pro can"t find printer

I have downloaded the network diagnostic utility. When I run it it won't let me get past finding the printer. It wants it to be hooked up with ethernet cable which ain' going to happen. The printer is hooked to a desktop Dell running Windows 7 that is my wifes. It works I am not messing with that end. Scared? No just don't need the grief if I get it where it does not work. It is putting out a signal because the setup screen on the printer says it is and better than that two laptops running Windows 7 can get print from it. I initally hooked it up wireless and this computer(runningXP Pro 32 bit) could get it to print a test page. Photos would crash. Printer would run maybe half a page and quit an spit 2 or 3 pages of gobbledy **bleep** then start over. You could hit print from the host computer and it might start printing ten minutes or so down the road. By then I had hit the print button 2 or three more times. That thing was spitting pages of half done stuff half a day later. Price of Photo paper made me wire it USB. I blamed it on slow internet. If we get 20k you are having a good day. My apoligies in advance to Leroy and Bubbas' DSL line. That is all water over the dam but I still am not thrilled so far. I am tired and my eyes are burnt to cinders reading web pages and I still can't find out what to do. I have typed every combination of computer names, network names, ip addresses into every place I know to do and I can't get the XP to recognize. I got a program called hack this that I will attach a copy. It means little to me but more knowledgable folks understand. If anybody can help it would be most appreciated. I been using flash drives to get my prints but it would be nice to be able to print a page or two every now and then.

If the printer is connected USB to the Windows 7 machine, what you can do is share it to the network (assuming the XP computer is also connected to the same network). This way the XP machine can see the printer on the Windows 7 computer and install it. The only drawback is that the Windows 7 computer will need to be powered on for the XP computer to be able to see and print to it. I have linked a third party site below for instructions on how to do this.

Set up a new desktop at home over the weekend and downloaded ITunes software to it. Could not remember username or password so spent quite a bit of time setting those up again but now I can't find or access my library on new or old compurter. I'm hoping someone out there can help me. To put it in short, I have been typing my notes for an exam that I need to pass for my medical license for the last couple of months. Yesterday I went to save the newest document to the folder (which I had saved on the Desktop of my Mac) and it wasn't there anymore. I'm not sure if any other files are missing because that was the main one that I was using at the time. I went into Microsoft Word and File > Recent and they are all listed there but when I click to open them it says that it can not find the file and if I would like to search for it myself. I do have an external hard drive but I guess I did not back up my stuff since I started working on these notes (yeah yeah I know dumb mistake). Can anyone help? I tried using StellarPhoenixMac recovery but I don't think it found anything worth while. Thanks.
