Can't find photos after downgrading from Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard

I downgraded from Lion to Snow Leopard as my comuter was really slow (probably right at the min requirements for the new OS)
I can't locate my photos from my Time Machine. How do I access these? I have reinstalled everything back to Lion to try to get them off my Time Machine as it currently won't let me go back in time past the date when I down graded to Snow Leopard..
I am a dead man if I don't find the photos of our kids....

Have a look at the section Time Machine - Troubleshooting E2. I can't see some backups
as it currently won't let me go back in time past the date when I down graded to Snow Leopard..
You probably now have two different Time Machine backups - after the downgrade TM started a new one. Have you inspected your backup disk in the Finder and looked what backups are there?
You should see a folder "Backups.backup.db" and inside the current backups for the computers you are syncing. Is there more than one? Open the folders and look at the dates. Is there any backup from last year?

Downgrading from Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard

HI,
I just recently upgraded my 2008 iMac to ML, but discovered after the event that my interface isn't supported by ML.
I'm willing to lose the $20 and head back to Snow Leopard.
My question is:
Will Time Machine restore EVERYTHING the way it was once I delete the hard drive and reinstall SL? I had a back up just a few days before I upgraded and haven't added anything to Time Machine since. And the files I have worked on I have just saved to a USB stick.
Have I forgotten anything?
Wiping the drive concerns me somewhat as you could imagine!

"Backup your files.
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert Snow Leopard Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
Erase Drive
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on thePartition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Upon completion quit DU and return to installer. Install Snow Leopard. Restore your files after the installation has completed."

Exporting OS X Mail from Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I partitioned my iMac HD to have two partitions: Macintosh HD has Mountain Lion; I reinstalled Snow Leopard on Macintosh HD 2. Best part: you can access your user-created files from EITHER disk partition. But not so OS X Mail. I wanted to revert to Snow Leopard, since I don't like the iOS-like Mountain Lion (swipe THIS!), but Mail was a problem since all my Snow Leopard Mail was successfully migrated over to Mountain Lion during upgrade. But I think I found a way to Export Mail from ML to (a clean install of) SL.
Try this:
1. Open Mail in ML. For each folder you wish to have back in SL, Export it to your ML Desktop as an .mbox file. Depending on the folder size, this can take from a few seconds to several minutes. You'll see an .mbox icon for the particular folder on your Desktop. If the word "partial" appears between the folder name and the .mbox suffix, wait a few moments for the Export to complete, at which time the word "partial" will disappear. E.g., for a folder named "Mary", if it's a huge one, the icon will first appear as "Mary.partial.mbox"; when the Export is done, you'll see "Mary.mbox".
2. When you've Exported all your desired folders as above, you can exit ML and re-start your Mac in SL. Open Mail in Snow Leopard, and once again, for each file you just Exported in ML to the Desktop there, select "Import Data From Apple Mail" and choose the folder from the Desktop in ML to which your mboxes were Exported. When the Import starts, you can see via a progress bar how far along it is. When done, you'll see a new folder in your SL Mail called "Import"; click on it to reveal the folder you just Imported!
3. Then drag the folder you just Imported out of the Import folder to "On My Mac" in SL Mail; you can then delete the Import folder.
4. Repeat until all your folders are where you want them (in SL).
5. When you have time, go back into ML and clear all those .mbox files from your Desktop.
There MAY be an easier way, but this is what worked for me.

The iOS view vs classic view in Mail is not the problem; I've already configured for classic view.
Mountain Lion itself is.
My short list (to date) of crappy Mountain Lion behavior; items marked with a double asterisk (**)represent the worst of Mountain Lion for me.
** No up/down arrows in scroll bar slider;
Expose` not as easy to navigate as in Snow Leopard;
Mail does not request passwords for either receive or send;
No "Save Draft" icon in Mail compose window (workaround: use command-s);
"Save As" selection missing in most app menus;
No separate Search window in Safari (workaround: use Firefox or Opera);
** Can't export Mail from Mountain Lion into Snow Leopard if downgrading (I compiled this list before I stumbled on the method in this thread, but I'd prefer to effect this with Unix symbolic links);
iWork 09 seems to have "circled the wagons" re compatibility with MS Office or LibreOffice (workaround: just use Libreoffice);

This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

It's not a matter of "letting" each maintain its own database, William. By default, I believe, I have no control over what gets written. In fact, if there were a way to set a preference that says, use this index named "spotlightindexSL' only [while in SL], that might solve my problem. Then when booting up in ML, it would just go after the index it last made.
My guess is that while I am in ML or SL and not the other, there are all sorts of changes to files and the system freaks and says "Oh, now look at what a mess I've made — there are all sorts of files unaccounted for. Now I have to rebuild the whole thing."
I have 2 had drives in my Mac, both 500GB. One (Working Disk) has no operating system and all my files, and the other drive is partitioned 470/30gb with SL on the 470 and ML in the 30. When I restart in either OS, the auto-start Indexing as if for the very first time, and do both hard drives (in total: 3 partitions of files, not counting the ML Restore partition).
I know it all uncoventionally — just wanted to see what my $20 new OS will cost me in software upgrades, in particular my $1800 Adobe Design Suite CS4 and a few others.

Could I still use the "find my mac"-app if I downgraded from OSX Lion to Snow Leopard?

In the beginning of 2012, I had the great misfortune of getting robbed and all my recording equipment was stolen, including my macbook pro 17" running on OSX Snow Leopard. I was able to buy a new macbook, same as the old one, but with the OSX Lion. It didn't take long before I noticed that it wasn't running as smooth as the previous OSX. At first I thougt it was the hardware; Steve Jobs had just died and I thought the people at Apple felt like they could finally ditch the high standards that were once enforced upon them and go Windows on our *****. But I soon learned it was the software. After re-purchasing my recording-software and trying and failing to install it, time after time, I got to a point where I just wanted to smash the whole thing and throw it out the window... Fortunately I managed to get a hold of myself. Now, I still want to get rid of the osx Lion and downgrade, but I don't want to have my stuff stolen again at some point and then find out that not only will Apple not pay out the insurance I payed for, but also I can't find my macbook anywhere, because I don't have this stupid application anymore because I downgraded. So, I was wondering if there's any chance to have the best of both worlds. (or the best of one world and then just the other/previous world) The only thing that's good about Lion is the "find my mac"-app. All the rest utterly ***** ***!!

"Find my Mac" is an OS X Lion feature and is not available in Snow Leopard. So if you want Find My Mac in yor MacBook Pro you'll be stuck to OS X Lion.
I don't know what else to tell you other than consider buying Lo-Jack for laptops.

How to go back from mountain lion to snow leopard?

No news from apple about my problem with my wacom cintiq directly related to mountain lion.
So I decided to go back to Snow Leopard... but is this even possible?

I have both systems installed on two computers (both partitioned). When I created the Mountain Lion partition, I was able to drag items from one partition to the other in Finder. That should work if the Time machine restore doesn't work.
I would also recommend making separate Time Machine backups for the two partitions. I started out using the same backup, but it appeared that neither partition would recognize it's last backup, so it would backup everything all over again. I have the backups on different network drives, so there is no conflict. If you only have one drive, I think having the backups in different folders would probably work.

Migrate from Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard without transferring the OS?

I am leaving my job and need to transfer all of my files from my work computer back to my personal computer. My work computer is Mountain Lion and my personal computer is Snow Leopard. I need to know how to use Time Machine/Migration Assistant to move all of my files. (I was going to just update my personal MBP to Mountain Lion but the hardware is not supported for that OS.)
How can I get all of my files off of a computer with Mountain Lion, to put onto a computer with Snow Leopard?

You can't use Migration Assistant to transfer the data from a computer with Mountain Lion to a Mac with Snow Leopard.
In this case, the only thing you can do is to transfer the data manually with an external disk. Just get an external disk, put the data you need onto the external disk and finally, transfer the files to your home computer.
Unfortunately, this is the only way to do it. If you want, you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone on an external disk if you don't want to copy your data manually to the external disk

Reverting from Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard

Hi. I have a early 2012 MBA and it is running Mountain Lion. I rang apple and ordered a SL Retail Disk (10.6.3) and this did not work. When i use my external DVD drive to boot up over Mountain Lion, It just shows the 2D Snow Leopard Apple logo on a white screen followed by a whole lot of nothing.... After talking with about 4 AppleCare People they gave me the verdict that it is essentially impossible to install SL because the version of OS is older than the mac. Pretty angry because i just paid $20.99 for the disk and now its virtually useless..
Sorry for the bad news but it seems it is not a good day for people who hate Lion/Mountain Lion.

Where did you put them?
These are not part of the sync process at all, as the manual tells you. You should be importing them to your comptuer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

I recently downgraded from Mountain Lion back to Snow Leopard and I forgot to export my bookmarks.

Unfortunately downgrading from Mountain Lion back to Snow Leopard means I need to wipe the hard drive and install everything from scratch. That takes hours, and I've already done the bulk of the work, twice actually since I forgot to back up my photos in Iphoto and had to start over from my Time Machine backup of Mountain Lion.
Anyhow, I am curious as to whether or not there is a way to retrieve my bookmarks from the Time Machine backup and get them onto my downgraded OS, or will I have to start all over again, restore my system to Mountain Lion and go through the hours it takes to get back to Snow Leopard.

You're missing the point. If you didn't make the /username/Library/ folder visible, then it's hidden on the TM backup. Getting to ii is beyond my ken. However, Pondini's TM FAQs might have info on that madness.
