Can't find rental movie

Question

Rented and watched a movie last night. Downloaded a new one a couple hours ago - it took a very long time to download and start, probably almost an hour. When it finally started, the elapsed time counter on the top bar was incrementing, but no video was displaying and no audio was heard. Tried to click on a couple buttons on the lower player bar, and everything disappeared - window closed.
FINALLY worked my way back to the movie icon again, but it's very difficult to find this stuff. Eventually found a blue link, "Shop the Itunes Store now," and clicked it. That window then became a message about transferring to the store, or something like that, and then I saw a new window come up with the two movie icons on it (last night's and this afternoon's). Clicked on the new title I wanted to watch, and again nothing happened except the time counter being incremented.
Tried going all the way out of the browser (Chrome) and coming back in, but this time couldn't even get to the display of the two movie icons - got the message about transferring to the store, then immediately a bunch of movies displayed. Not what I'd seen before.
Apple menu selections have always seemed a bit cumbersome, but this is way beyond that!
I assume the problem is me, not Apple menus, but I still can't get this to work. Any ideas, folks?

Quick update - it's fifteen minutes since I asked the above question. I received a note from Itunes that yesterday's movie had been removed from the library, since it's 24-hour rental period was up. So I went to the library, realized that I'd goofed as to how I was supposed to find the movie again, and - lo and behold - there it was. Unfortunately, still no audio or video, just a timer counting up. (And each time, counter shows an incremented time, so the player seems to think that there's an actual movie being played and it's just restarting it at the point I left off from the previous attempt.)
