I just moved my itunes library to a new computer and can't open any of my songs that were not purchased from the Itunes store.  How to I add them?

  • Can't open songs once transferred to new computer. Please help!

    Hello
I followed the helpful advice on these boards and used an external hard drive to transfer my iTunes library from an old PC to an new one. My problem now is I see the songs the songs in my music folder but it seems that I would have to import them one at a time to get them into my new library. There has got to be an easier way that I am missing. Thanks in advance for your help.

    I have a similar problem.
I removed and re-installed Itunes and Ipod software as per the Apple site recommendations because my ipod would not connect to itunes. I re-installed both software, opened itunes and had no library at all showing and my view config was all defaults. I copied and renamed the "itunes library xxx-xx-xx.itl" file from the previous library folder in my music back and it restored my library and playlists (yeah!).
My problem is that many (25 to 30%) of my 10,000+ songs have an exclamation point next to them and the library can't find them. It can find the rest of the songs (including some but not all songs in the same CD's). All of the songs are in the same folder tree on an external usb hard drive. I can manually locate and connect the songs but this would take 100 years to do. I tried to consolodate the library but this did not help. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Greg Florio

  • HT1420 My songs that I purchased on my itunes account from my dad's computer will not play on my new computer, I have access to my entire account but can only play songs purchased using my new computer. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Kevin,
Have you authorized the Computer to your Apple ID?
If not, sign on to iTunes.
Then got to the Store menu option at the top of the screen (CTL+B if it is not showing), and click on it to display the dropdown, and select Authorize this computer.
If that doesn't work, then sign on your Dad's iTunes ID and repeat the Authorization process.

  • I-tunes can't find songs in library on new external hard-drive

My Western Electric hard-drive died and I purchased a new Seagate external drive. I moved my I-tunes music library with all my songs to the new drive and changed the location of my library in I-tunes. When I open I-tunes it can't find any of my songs. There is an ! in front of every one. The locaction of the music folder is set correctly in I-tunes and the songs are all still there. I can individually locate the songs and they play fine but this isn't practical for a 10,000 song library. I think the problem has something to do with the auto-backup software that came with the Seagate. It creates a series of directories and hidden files when doing a back-up. I can't sync my I-pod because I'll lose my whole libarary since I-tunes can't find the songs. Help.

All of my several thousand mp3s are on an external HD, and i-tunes just comes up with an exclamation mark next to each of the tunes saying it can't find the original file.
Have these always been on the external and they were previously working?
I've changed the i-tunes music location to my external HD (F drive) in preferences
If you moved the music yourself, this will simply tell iTunes to use that location for anything in the future. It will still look for everything in iTune in teh location it was at before.
    and consolidated the library,
Consolidating will copy everything in iTunes to the location you set in iTunes prefs -> Advanced - iTunes music folder location.
If you moved all the music from that location then consolidated, there is nothing to move, since iTunes will be looking for music in the original location.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get i-tunes to relocate all of my music files
Let iTunes relocate them. You do not relocate them.
    Do this...
    Quit iTunes.
Move all the music back to the original location. Don't leave the music there as iTunes will simply duplicate it at that location when you consolidate.
    Open iTunes.
Make sure iTunes prefs -> Advanced is set to the external where you want it.
Then File -> Libary -> Consolidate.

  • Can't find files after restore onto new hard drive

    Hi,
I just installed a larger hard drive.  I saved a disk image to an external drive, made a recovery disk, booted off the recovery disk, and restored the saved disk image.   Then I took the new unallocated space, formatted it, and created a mounted volume in a folder on the C: drive (My Documents).  I moved everything under My Documents to this new mounted volume.  In other words: C:\My Documents is now a mounted volume, not actually in the C: partition.
The trouble is, the files are there but in many instances they aren't findable.  It seems like there are caches of directory structures in various places that have to be rebuilt, or there are virtual pathnames (e.g. C:\Users\myusername\Documents) that have to be reset.  For example, I have a spreadsheet with references to values in other spreadsheets.  It can't find these anymore, even though the pathnames ought to be the same.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
    Thanks very much.
    - bill.

I have only played with XP for sure on changing the location of the my documents folder. It usually involves right clicking on it and going to properties and changing it. Sounds like you may need to copy things around, and then, edit the location on the my documents folder. I am not really sure what your situation is.

  • Can't open accounts after transferring to new iMac

Just bought a new iMac 2.66. Used migration assistant to transfer files and application from existing iMac intel running 10.4.9. The old iMac had two password protected accounts on it. The accounts transferred but it appears the setting etc didn't. I can't open the password protected accounts - the message is that I don't have insufficient privileges. I'd very much appreciate suggestions about how to get around this problem. Note also that during the initial set up when I first started up the new iMac I attempted to transfer files from the old computer as prompted but the new computer appears to have gone into sleep mode and couldn't wake it - hence rebooting and using migration assistant.

  • Multiple copies of songs after transfer to new computer

    This is really annoying me.
I bought a new laptop and I want to transfer all my music from the old to the new. The new laptop has beatsmusic on it (factory installed).
So first I downloaded iTunes.  Immediately after loading ITunes I had access to all my music I purchases through the iTunes store.  So far so good.
BUT, 95% of my music is CDs that I burned one at a time into my iTunes library.  So that transfer is critical.   I have an external hard-drive I use to backup all my music.  So I transferred the entire library to my new laptop from the external hard drive.
All the music transferred - but not as iTunes MP4 files.  Nope - they all became beatsmusic files.  I don't want that.  Frustrating that computers have to force people to have what they don't want.
I am also dealing with windows 8 - so accessing music library is no longer easy like it used to be.
Anyway - I tried converting all the beats files back to iTunes music files (like they were originally!)  Now I have 2 and 3 copies of every song in my library.
The whole thing really irritates me.
Why can't consumers have what they want?  Do I start over now?  Delete the entire library off the new computer?
I am not going to delete 20,000 songs manually one at a time so forget that suggestion.  And the darned beats music is still the default music player.
Considering throwing away all computers and becoming a survivalist in the woods.

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)
Alternativey see this migrate iTunes library post, you may want to revisit the transfer method. If you get it right you don't import anything or create duplicates in the process.

  • Can't find my music on a new computer

I recently got a new computer and I am having trouble 'finding' my music. I keep my music on an external hard drive, and had no problem getting my playlists on my new computer, but whenever I try to play a song it keeps searching in my 'my music' folder on my C: drive, not on my external. In my 'properties' I did change my Itunes music folder location to the correct folder on my external harddrive, but this did not help. Each time I try to play a song it can't be found because Itunes is searching for 'my music' in my C: drive. Please help.

Your music will only be here you put it.
It does not magically apppear on a new computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy, not good, then you can redownload some itunes purchases in some countries:

  • Can't Get Songs To Play On New Computer w/ Windows 7

I bought a new computer Friday that has Windows 7. I downloaded iTunes...but I cannot play the song previews or purchased songs. It shows the song loads, but it never progresses...stays at 00:00. I can play video previews, but no music.
Is ity an iTunes thing? QuickTime thing? Windows 7 thing?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I had the same problem after I installed Windows 7. My iTunes worked OK except when trying to play a track from my playlist or my Audio CD. Like you my slidebar never moved from 0.00 and I got no sound. The solution was to buy a more up to date sound card, one that is compatible with Windows 7 and Windows Media Centre as well as iTunes. I changed from a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 to a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme Audio and now I can play and hear tracks using iTunes. As your laptop is new I would assume that it has a Windows 7 compatible sound card but you never know it may not.
Hope it works out well for you,
    Steve

  • HT204074 can't find previously downloaded movie on new computer

Help! I had purchased RED 2 in a blu ray combo pack with Digital Copy. I downloaded the movie to my now dead computer, and it included iTunes Extras. I can only find the extras file in my new computer with my id. How do I get my previously purchased goods back?

Whether you can redownload the film depends upon what country that you are in, whether the film is still in your country's store, and whether the studio allows redownloading. Does it show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage for redownloading ? If not, and if the film is still in your country's store, then is it hidden : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919 ?
If you can't redownload it then you will need to copy it from your backup of your downloads/library that you should be keeping and maintaining.

Yes you can stop iTunes from auto opening. With your iPod connected go to the "Main" menu of the iPod on iTunes.
Remove the check mark in the first box shown.

  • Backup of ITunes music will not download after transferred to new computer

I am trying to move my music from my old Sony A190 to my new AR and the music will restore to the new system but when I try to sync I get a message telling me "Some of the files were not copied to the iPod because you are not authorized to play this music on this computer" ...this isn't the exact error message but it's close. How do I get my music onto my new computer?

There is a site now posted in this forum where you can download iWork 8. After the download is complete, burn a copy of the application to a disk. Remove the old copy of iWork. Install new. So far, I have not been prompted to enter my activation code, nor has there been any notice about this being a Trial copy. Perhaps, somewhere, somehow, the program found the old activation code hidden in my HD. Anyway, it's all working.
    Thanks to all who responded.

  • I can't find my playlists on my new computer

I got a new computer and bought some new songs for my Shuffle. When syncing it, I accidentally erased all my songs from the ipod except the new ones I had just bought. How can I bring up my playlists in my account that have all the songs I've already purchased earlier???

    Hey there Mwahl16,
It sounds like you are wanting to get your accidentally erased playlists on your device back onto your iTunes library on your new computer. You can copy your original iTunes library over from your original computer with this article, and resync the content you want:

  • Can't put songs from iPod onto new computer

I just purchased a new computer, and would like to upload my music files from my iPod onto it. My computer recognizes the iPod, but won't let me copy songs to my computer. Does anyone know how I can do this?
    Compaq/HP   Windows XP

You can't sync your music back from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    PodPlus Windows Only
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes

  • I can't authorize my computer! I just changed computers and I can't access my old purchases because I can't find where to authorize my new computer!! I can deauthorize the other computers, which I just did, but it can't find anything else

I can't find the "Authorize your computer" in the Itunes Store. I can't download my old purchases because it tells me I have to authorize the computer, but I can't find it anywhere!! I can enter my account and deauthorize the old computers, which I did, but nothing happens. I can't find the "Advanced" option anywhere either.
