Can't find SQL Server Express application after install

I have downloaded and install SQL Server Express on my new Win 8.1 laptop.  Installtion runs without any issues (no error messages displayed) and shows a successfull completion.  However, I can't seem to make any connections to the server.  There
are not applicaitons available and I don't get any response trying to make a connection.  How do I make connection?

Hello,
Do you search your computer already for the SQL Server programs installed by SQL Server setup? On
the Start Screen, could you write the word SQL and see what the search can find on your computer?
What version of SQL Server you installed? Depending of the version installed, could you share with
us the Summary.txt log file? The following article may help you locate the Summary.txt log file:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702(v=sql.110).aspx
Hope this helps.

  • Can't find SQL Server 2012 Configuration Manager

In my Win8 I can't find SQL Server Configuration Manager.
I need to connect to an SQL Database using a specific port.
Does anyone know how to do that?
    Thanks a lot!!

    Hi Lina,
Did you install multiple SQL Server instances on your local server? We can not configure SQL Server 2012 instance under SQL Server 2008 R2 Configuration Manager.
If you had installed SQL Server Configuration Manager with SQL Server 2012, you can try to run "sqlservermanager11.msc". If this is not opening then you might not install SQL Server 2012 Configuration Manager.

    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/8df18025-fc2b-43c2-8476-532336ff09e3/sql-server-express-for-commercial-use?forum=sqlexpress
the question is can I do the same for sql server express 2008,2012, and 2014?
can I install and use sql server express 2008, 2012 and 2014 on an azure vm? specifically
    http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/virtual-machines/
    A0 instance
just an off topic question, is it required to pay to use sql server on virtual machines?
why is there a different pricing here

    Hello,
Yes, you can use all versions SQL Server Express for commercial use. Please read more resources about it.

  • I can't see sql server express 2012 from ssms 2008 R2 -- what do I need to download?

I'm running sql server 2008 R2 Developer on a win7 (pro) workstation.   I would like to keep this installation because it has SSRS and Analysis Server. But I was not able to attach a sql 2012 DB so I downloaded Sql Server Express 2012 (per the
picture below - 1st option selected) and installed it.   Sql Server Express 2012 appears to be running -- per my services list, but I cannot see the instance in ssms 2008 R2. Do I need to uninstall Sql Server Express 2012 and then download another
option (from the picture below)? How should I proceed so that I can have a working/workable instance of Sql Server Express 2012 that I can see in ssms (whatever required version) and also keep sql server 2008 R2?  which download should I select (from
    the picture below?
    Rich P

Should I uninstall Sql server 2012 first?
    Rich P
No you do not need to uninstall any thing
    >> Sql Server Express 2012 appears to be running -- per my services list, but I cannot see the instance in ssms 2008 R2.
You need to just download SQL Server 2012 express management studio and use that to connect to SQL Server 2012. And use SSMS 2008 r2 to connect to SQL Server 2008 r2.
    This File :ENU\x64\SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe
Although I guess SSMS 2012 express with SP2 would work just fine and you would connect to 2008 R2 database using that.

  • Can't get SQL Server Express 2008 R2 to work

Standalone on a server I've installed this numerous times. Very simple Windows 7 Pro with VS2013(no domain), and I just have no idea why things won't work.
I installed the setup package that contained the tools (Management Studio)
I created a new instance LOCALSQLTEST (I have no idea if this is right, I didn;t want to mess up anything in Lightswitch i've done and don't know how/where Intrisic is stored)
    Added admin password
    Complete setup.
Enable Name pipes, and tried to start Server agent (to become discoverable?) but doesn't start.
Studio Management shows nothing to connect to.
VS2013 has installed so many SQL products on my system, I have no idea what does what. What I would give for a proper tutorial.
Anybody have a simple checklist, work through? I'm just trying to test deploy this dang thing in Web

    Hello
Is the issue that you cannot connect see the SQL Instance that you have installed? (If yes i think that this is the wrong forum) If it is that you cannot run any of your LightSwitch apps after this new install then I think that it is because by default any
lightswitch app looks for an instance named "sqlexpress". You can alter this by unloading the project and then editing the .lsml file and changing the instance name within it.
I know that sometimes in hindsight rebuilding works out quicker but doesnt it seem silly rebuilding your house becuase the front door doesnt close properly??

  • Installed SQL Server 2008 R2 with all features and can't find SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio

I went to install additional items and found that the installation process has that product greyed out meaning it has been already installed. Where can I find it?
    Thank you,

If its greyed out it means its already installed and what do you mean by additional items can you be specific what you require. To give better look at what is installed on you system please run

  • Computer can't find DVD/CD-ROM drives after installing iTunes

After installing iTunes, my computer no longer can detect my DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives. They've disappeared from the "My Computer" window.
I ran "System Restore" and the disc drives showed up, but now they're undetected once again after I re-installed iTunes. I've restarted, I've uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes, I've run the built-in diagnostic self-checks on the drives, I downloaded updated drivers, I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, spent 1 hour on the phone with Apple support, and finally spent 2 hours on the phone with Dell Support. Nothing. Please help--I want to be able to use my iPod with Windows.

    Dell Dimension E510   Windows XP

Hey there. May I interject? Anyone mind?
For the most part, what's occurring is one of two things. Either...
    A) an application (such as Roxio, Nero, iTunes, etc.) is installing a driver file (as a .SYS) or replacing a working driver file that is referenced within your registry. For some folks, the replaced driver is still referenced by either an UpperFilterCheck or a LowerFilterCheck, and the device manager is actually seeking out that file that, well... no longer exists. Or, when you try and uninstall the application (iTunes is the frequent transgressor) everything is removed, including the related driver files, but the registry isn't altered... so the device manager continues to try and locate that driver file... which no longer exists.
    or
    B) a virus (or trojan) burrows its way into your file structure, and creates an element of itself disguised as a .SYS file. We've seen this happen before with viral elements disguising themselves as audio or video card driver files, in the efforts of masking themselves from lower-class anti-virus programs (or un-updated ones). In this case, they take on the name of a driver file that the optical drives are "familiar" with, and so, with the intention of being "fast, friendly, and efficient", the optical drives are tapped to utilize this new "driver" file... and it gets referenced in the registry as such.
However, when your anti-virus actually snaps to it, and removes the virus / trojan, and you go off on a virus-killing mission, galavanting through the registry and cleaning the little buggers out in Safe Mode and everything... you might remove the viral elements... but... the reference to them might still remain. The device manager is still looking for that "driver file", and will cause the optical drives to lock up in a Code 39 or Code 41 because of it.
Either way, the thing to do to reclaim your optical drives is located in your registry here:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}
You'll want to have that open, and a mini-window of the following:
START -> CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> Hardware (tab) -> DEVICE MANAGER -> Offending Drive (with yellow tag by it) Right-Mouse-Click and PROPERTIES -> Driver (tab) -> DRIVER DETAILS
Notice that list. It references all the drivers that that particular drive is utilizing. There should be a single .DLL (dynamic link library) file and multiple .SYS files. It's the .SYS files we're focusing on, and they should be located in your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ folder stem. If you want to open a new window explorer, and go verify that each of those driver files still exists in that folder stem, you may.
At this point, compare the Driver File Detail list with the Registry Tree Location you're sitting in, and look at the UpperFilterCheck and LowerFilterCheck key values. Your offending key value will NOT be on your Driver File Detail list!!! It might be as small as "PFC" or something else, but that value is referencing to a driver file that no longer exists. Delete that offending key value. Close the registry.
Close the Driver File Details and Drive Properties windows. At this point, to finish this up, you need to Soft Uninstall (Right-mouse-click on the drive, and hit "Uninstall" ) the drive(s), let the Device Manager refresh... then hit ACTION -> Scan For Hardware Changes ...
This should start a new Found New Hardware cycle, and.... poof!... your drives should be back to normal
I don't know if this will help, I think it should.
Good Luck. Post back if you have a problem.

  • Can SQL Server Express Send an Email When an SProc Finishes?

I looked online for an answer to this; I didn't find anything definitive.  I'm wondering if I can get my SQL Server Express to send an email as soon as an SProc runs.  I know a more robust version of SQL Server can do it, but I don't know if the
express version can do it.  If it can be done, can you please show me how to set it up, step by step.
    Thanks everyone!!
Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.

if I can get my SQL Server Express to send an email as soon as an SProc runs.  I
The SQL Server Express Edition don't support Database E-Mail feature; see
Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2012; so you can't send an e-mail.

  • Having issues with getting SQL Server Express to start services and run.

    Good afternoon everyone,
I have been working on a 2012 R2 server getting ready to move databases to new hardware.  I had SQL Server Express 2008 R2 running on this server with no issues.  I was handed another software package that ran SQL Express 2012 and had to for compatibility
reasons.  I have had multiple versions run on Server 2012 before with no issues.  This time, not so lucky.  When the installer from the updated package put on SQL Express 2012 it completed with errors ( error log posted at the end of post) and
would not allow me to run software.  I then tried the db that I had installed on 2008 R2 and it also gave the  same error as the 2012 version.  IN basic terms the required services attempted to start and shut back down again.  I have received
Error 1068 about database handles and error %%945.   I know this db has plenty of space and the permissions were added for the Admin account to access both db's.  I then uninstalled both versions and tried again, with the same errors listed when
I tried to start the services.     I am thinking that a clean install would fix the issue however I am not certain what files/folders/reg entries need to be deleted or modified.  I have researched all the errors I can find, however I am very
new with SQL anything so I know I am missing something.   I also do not have an "E:" drive on this server (not sure why it is going there). Input would be very welcome as I am not certain where to go from here.
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Hi HMLunger,
Did you install the SQL Server instance successfully? If not, please help to post the summary and detail logs for analysis. By default, the logs can be found in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log.
However, if you fail to start SQL Server Express service after successfully installing SQL Server,
you might have to change the paths of the files by running the following scripts from the command prompt. For more details, please review this similar
    thread.
    NET START MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS /f /T3608
    SQLCMD -S .\SQLEXPRESS
    ALTER DATABASE model MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');
    ALTER DATABASE model MODIFY FILE (NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path\os_file_name');

  • Issues using BitLocker in Windows 8 Emedded with 2012 SQL Server Express

I was told that this forum may be able to help me with my issues (see original thread here:

    Background:
To summarize, I have an OS that is partitioned into two volumes: C and D.
C drive contains the running software, SQL Server install, and the OS.
D drive is the encrypted partition via BitLocker. The SQL Server files are stored here (logs, backup, and mdf).
    Problem:
The software cannot connect to the database stored on the encrypted D volume when BitLocker is turned on. The user account that I use to enable BitLocker is the same SQL Server Service account and has is also part of the Local Admin Group. As soon as I disable
BitLocker, the software works fine and the database connection succeeds. I am currently using the SQL System Admin account to login (SA) and BitLocker is being used with a TPM.
The error I am experiencing when connecting through the software is 'login
    failed for user sa'.
    Thank you for the suggestions/help.

  • How to access Sql Server Express installed on Virtual PC from Host?

I have SQL Server Express 2008 R2 installed on Virtual PC. and on my Host machine i have SQL Server 2008 R2 ( Enterprise Version) installed.
Since Management studio that comes with SQL express does not support SQL profiler, i want to access SQL Server Express from the Host machine’s management studio which has SQL profiler.
But I could access it using VM’s ip address & instance name

    Hi lax,
Follow below steps in your Virtual Machine:
    1. Allow remote connections to this server
The first thing you want to check is if Remote Connections are enabled on your SQL Server database. In SQL Server 2008 you do this by opening SQL Server 2008 Management Studio, connect to the server in question, right click the server and open the Server Properties.
Navigate to Connections and ensure that Allow remote connections to this server is checked.
    2.  Protocols for MSSQLServer
The next good thing to check is the SQL Server Network Configuration. Open the SQL Server Configuration Manager, unfold the node SQL Server Network Configuration and select Protocols for MSSQLServer (or whatever the name of your SQL Server instance is). Make
    sure that TCP/IP is enabled.
    3. The Firewall
If there is still no communication happening between your computer and the remote SQL Server you most likely need to configure your firewall settings.
A good first step is to figure out which port is being used by TCP/IP (and which you need to open in your firewall). You can do this by right clicking TCP/IP and selecting Properties. Click on the tab IP Addresses .
That was easy enough and all there is left to do is to allow inbound TCP/IP traffic on Port 1433 in your firewall. In Windows 7 this works something like this. Open the Control Panel and navigate to Windows Firewall. Click on Advanced Settings on the left hand
side and you should see the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. Select the Inboud Rules on the left hand side and click on New Rule on the right hand side. This opens the New Inbound Rule Wizard which you can use to allow inbound traffic on Port 1433
    for TCP/IP.
For more information, please refer to
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/walzenbach/archive/2010/04/14/how-to-enable-remote-connections-in-sql-server-2008.aspx.
    In host machine:
After you have done steps above, you could use the SQL Server Management Studio in the host machine to connect the SQL Server Express R2 in Virtual PC. If you installed a default instance in Virtual PC, you could use VirtualComputerName to login the SQL
Server database engine. If you installed a named instance in Virtual PC, you could use VirtualComputerName\InstanceName to login the SQL Server database engine.
    Thanks,

  • How to switch between SQL Server Express and SQL Server Evaluation

I have both SQL Server Express and SQL Server Evaluation installed on my laptop.
I am wondering how to start SQL Server Evaluation; when I click All Programs > SQL Server Management Studio, I always get SQL Server Express (which I installed on my laptop a couple years ago).
I just downloaded SQL Server Evaluation (a couple days ago).
Whenever I try to access SQL Server Evaluation, I always seem to get SQL Server Express.
Sorry if this is a trivial thing; I just can’t seem to get it to work (and I Googled for a solution before posting this).
    Thanks everyone!!

Ah!  It worked!!  This is great!!  It seems like I can connect to my version of SQL Server Evaluation, named 'EXCEL-PC\EXCEL'.
Somehow, though, I seem to keep getting errors in my BIDS when I try to run an SSIS project.  See below:
Ah!  It worked!!  This is great!!  It seems like I can connect to my version of SQL Server Evaluation, named 'EXCEL-PC\EXCEL'.
I am getting an error that VS is unable to load a document:
BIDS has to be installed by one of these editions of SQL Server 2008: Standard, Enterprise, Developer, or Evaluation.
To install BIDS, run SQL Server Setup and select Business Intelligence Development Studio.
#1)  I recently downloaded and installed SQL Server Evaluation (specifically for the opportunity to try using BIDS and learn about this technology).
#2)  When I run BIDS > SSIS, I get the error I described above.
#3)  I have had SQL Server Express installed for a couple years on my laptop
So, my question is this: is it possible that BIDS > SSIS is picking up my SQL Server Express, instead of SQL Server Evaluation?
If so, how can I get BIDS to point to SQL Server Evaluation?
You can see in the image above that I have my BIDS Data Connections pointing to EXCEL-PC\EXCEL, which is the name of my SQL Server Evaluation.
Is this correct?  Why doesn’t this work?
I’ve spent some considerable time on this.  I’m close to just uninstalling EVERYTHING pertaining to SLQ Server, and just reinstalling SQL Server Evaluation, but this will take some time, and I don’t necessarily want
to get rid of my SQL Server Express.  However, if that’s the only way to get this working, then that’s what I’ll do.
I’d greatly appreciate any insight into this!!
