Can't Finish Previewing...

I have Illustrator CS6 running on a 2011 iMac, 4GB RAM. Error message states it cannot finish previewing file and reverts to outline mode. I've read that this issue should have been fixed with the 64 bit upgrade in CS6. How can I improve the performace? More RAM? Thnks...

You may want to provide some more details.
About what kind of objects are you talking?
A file that consists just of one, two or twenty circles? Plus a couple of text objects?
Or something else?
I do know the warning message you're referring to, but only in conjunction with very complex constructions …

  • Illustrator CS6 and CC can't finish previewing. could not complete the requested operation

This is happening in both Illustrator CC and CS6 on 2 x imacs, one macbook pro and one macbook air.
Can anyone help with this issue.....it's doing my head in. When it does this it reverts to outline view and when going to preview mode it comes up with the error.

We use Illustrator for package design. The files are quite complicated.
Recently we are experiencing extreme lag on Ai files. In some cases we get wierd stair stepping and duplicate pixel studdering across the monitor as we mouse over the art in preview mode. Sometimes get a "Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation." message.
How much RAM/Resources do we need to run this bloated software?
Trimmed most installed user/library fonts. Universal Type Server only opens required fonts.

  • "Can't finish previewing" error, file can not be save

I have AI CS3 installed on a PC running Windows XP 64bit at Intel Core(TM) 6600 2.4GHz with 8 GB of RAM and NVIDIA Quadro FX 540. I have been getting the error "Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation." This happens many times and I am not sure what is going on.
I've manage to open other files and create new files but I just cant "save" or "save as" this current file it says "An unknown error has occurred" after the above mentioned error emerge.
it seems that there was a post by other user on this issues too, there are a few similar things in our spec. hope this would help to fix this problem.

  • Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation

So, I am working on a large and complex document in AI CC 2014, and periodically this message ("Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation") pops up and drops me into outline mode. I can work around it by hiding some parts of the illustration or changing zoom, so it looks like a resource issue. But what resource? RAM doesn't seem likely: I have 32 GB or memory, 400 GB of free disk space for paging, and the Mac Activity Monitor shows no sign of memory pressure. (Illustrator is only using 1 GB). So what's going on? Is it a graphics hardware issue? I don't have the latest or greatest: my iMac has an AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 1 GB. Is that the problem? Would a new computer help, or is it some internal thing with Illustrator and a new computer would be a waste of money. The error message is completely uninformative as to the cause of the problem. Does Illustrator CC have a log file or any other source of info?

  • Can't open the illustration. Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation.

Recently, I restarted my MAC and I'm not able to place images in AI or open AI files with images.
Sometimes when I do place a jpg, it just shows a box.
    Some errors include:
    • This file is not readable.
    • Can't open the illustration.
    • Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation.

As Monika said, we need info about the file and exact system info. Sounds like the files are damaged or locked at the operating system level, which in turn could indicate file system issues....

  • Can't finish previewing. There isn't enough memory. ID = -108

    We run CS5.
One of our clients sent us a file that they would like printed.  The file is 1MB in size, and in PDF format - nothing unusual about any of this.  As usual, I saved the file and tried to open it in Illustrator to set up a proof for our customer, and to check and make sure the file is print-ready.  I received the error: "Can't finish previewing.  There isn't enough memory. ID = -108".  I press OK and it opens up a blank file with some crop marks on it.
I've tried finding a solution online, but everyone who has this problem seems to have next to no RAM.  I'm running on a brand new computer with Windows 7, 16GB of RAM and the Intel Core i7 processor.  I didn't think my RAM or cache were the problem, but just to be sure, I shut off the computer, let it sit for a few minutes, and started it up again.  Same problem.
I am able to open the file in Photoshop and Acrobat - but even when I save the file at a lower resolution, and turn it into a jpeg, it still won't open.  I get the same error.
I need to be able to work with this file.  How can I resolve this?
    Thanks!

Hi Josh--I was out the remainder of the day and evening.
I don't know whether you have gotten to the bottom of the problem yet. The PDF seems to just consist of an image. It opens and places fine here in everything I have that can do so.
There doesn't seem to be anything extrodinary about the file. It included crop marks, but as far as I can see, there's nothing way out on the artboard, etc., that could indicate there was something weird.
If you would like a file, I can ZIP an AI file and the extracted image--which you can also do from Acrobat as well.
    Take care, Mike

  • AI error: Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation.

I have a user who is trying to open up .ai files but recieves a few errors when he tries opening it.
Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation.
    Can't open the illustration.
    An unknown error has occurred.
His MAC has the latest 10.6.8 OSX and updates. I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling CS5 but still didn't work.
When he logs onto another employees MAC, he's able to open it up fine. But when he logs onto the MAC that he uses, the error shows up. He has admin privileges to the computer as well. When logging into the local accounts, its able to open any AI files fine. Seems like this is only happening when he logs into his domain account on that computer.
I've looked and already tried removing/disabling fonts that he didn't need. Also when opening up AI (no other programs opened), he still has 1.75 GB RAM available.

the question is what has changed in terms of PDF standard, in just the latest patch, to cause this problem for some of our generated PDFs?
Again, I'm guessing: it is possible that newer versions of Adobe products are more strict to adhere to PDF standards.
I have also tried to open your file using Adobe internal beta versions, and I've received the same errors.  Meaning that this behavior is here to stay.

  • Illustrator CC 2014 - Message - "Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the required operation."

We have 3 Macs OS 10.7.5, 16Gb and are all using Illustrator CC 2014. Since the Macs upgraded to CC 2014 all are exhibiting the same message, at random during deisgn, "Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the required operation.". At this point clicking on the "OK" button causes the screen graphics to appear in outline mode and unable to access / select any further commands, apart from "close".
Reverting back to the initial CC (which is still installed on the systems) shows no problems in completing the designs. Hence it appears that all the above issues seem apparent only since the latest CC upgrade.
Does anyone have any ideas as to this issue and any possible resolutions.

For the last few months, I've been having the exact same problem and it is driving me CRAZY. I finally contacted Adobe a few weeks ago regarding the issue and they had me clear out my preferences. All seemed fine for a few days... but then it came back again and seems worse now. It happened so often today I lost count. Very frustrating.

  • Illustrator can't finish previewing; not a memory issue

Just installed Illustrator CC and I am trying to work on a simple illustration but it has switched itself to outline mode and will not return to pixel or overprint preview. It gives the error "Can't finish previewing. Could not complete the requested operation." The common cause of this problem is lack of memory or insufficient scratch disk space, but my computer has 8GB of very fast RAM and my scratch disks are mostly empty and multiple terabytes each. My document is fairly simple; I am making speedo and tachometer gauges for my car, so the illustration is simply lines, guides, and a small amount of type on a single artboard, and one low-resolution .jpg I am using as a template. One thread I found suggested that TrueType fonts can cause a problem for Illustrator so I changed all the type to an OpenType font to no avail. Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Specs:
    Windows 8 Pro
    Intel Core i3 at 3.35Ghz
    8GB DDR3 1600 RAM
    GeForce 560 GTX
Illustrator CC installed on 2TB, 7200RPM drive; this drive is also my primary scratch disk
Secondary scratch disk is a 1.5TB USB3.0 external
System drive is a 128GB SSD so I do not want to use it as a scratch disk

Windows 8 shouldn't take up even close to half of a 128GB SSD unless it's loaded with bloatware being a Dell/HP/etc. install which should get reformatted first thing to remove.
I've had more bad than good luck installing Adobe programs on a separate drive.  Illustrator will always perform better on an SSD than a HDD.  That alone should be reason enough to keep it on a system drive.  Surely you can spare 5-10 GB to get Illustrator on a fast drive, if not, you should really consider making room

  • Error in Illustrator CS4 on Vista 64:  "Can't finish previewing.  There isn't enough memory. ID = - 108

Please help:  I have searched for this error and would appreciate any help or feedback.  I am not the Illustrator expert.  I build fast PC's, not design on them.  I would especially like to know where a complete error code list resides.
    Freshly assembled:
    Intel Core i7
    2 x 3GB DDR3
    3 SSD HDD's
    9800GTX+
I've done all the tips and tricks I can find.  With paging file, and w/o.  Scratch disk and w/o.  Fresh reboot on PC, CS4 fully updated, Vista 64bit business fully updated.  Aero off along with all visual stuff.
This PC is built to perform but will error out and I can't find the cause.
    To create the error:
    1.  open new 'print document'
    2.  Create text:  I use Blackoak Std 72 pt.  Pick a word to type.  I use 'Hello'.
    3.  Select and choose Effect > 3D > Extrude & Bevel.  Set Extrude Depth to 500, Bevel: Complex 4, and Height to 40.
    4.  Object > Expand Appearance
    5.  Object > Path > Offset Path. Run 3 times one of each type (Miter, Round, Bevel).  At this point there should be a lot of paths.
    6.  Window > Pathfinder > Unite
Total RAM usage never exceeds 3GB on the machine.
    Thanks for the help.

But do not worry, Adobe will sell you the CS5 (coming this April I think) instead of providing an update.

  • Error message "Can't finish previewing. There isn't enough memory. ID = 108"

    I have Illustrator CS5.
HP workstation with an intel xeon cpu. 64 bit
    12 GB of RAM.
I never had this problem before, but in the past few days this message keeps coming up, and converts the files to outline mode. It's happening to all kinds of illustrator files ranging is size from 2MB to 56MB, from simple drawings with gradient fills, to complex drawings with mesh. In most of the files, I'm working with vector images that I didn't create, but purchased from stock photo sites.
Any idea why this is happening? How can I fix this?

Check the source files in Photoshop. this could be due to "bad" color profiles or metadata being attached to the files.

  • Can't finish previewing. There is not enough memory ID = -108

    Hello!
My user is using CS5 on a Dell Optiplex 980 with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, an i5 650, and 8GB RAM.
She has ran into this error several times on more than one file, and Illustrator crashes.
We found the method to File > Place the file in question in a new file, but that did not resolve the issue.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Oh, I didn't know that!
I did ask her to download the CS6 trial while I researched this, to see if that solves the problem, and it seems that it might as it is available for 64-bit.
If anyone else has any suggestions, though, I would be glad to hear them.

  • Has anyone solved this? – "Can't finish previewing. There isn't enough memory."

Hi, i've been getting this message only since i switched to CC. I'm running an iMac i7 with 16GB of RAM and the pieces i'm working on are very small files and in the middle of working the notification comes up and then the image goes into a wireframe (outline) image. This should not be happening. Any ideas.
    Thanks!

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Does it go through properly this time?
