Can't fix kernel panic
Help! Yesterday my 2 year old iBook G4 started getting kernel panics. I repaired the disc, then reinstalled with install and archive. I was surprised to see my computer look exactly the same as it was before. This is the first time in the 15 years I've used Macs that I had to reinstall an OS. Anyway, after running software update to get to 10.4.10, plus updating everything else, I'm still getting kernel panics. I am so upset! I can't get an appointment with the Apple Store genius bar until tomorrow, so I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions. Right now it's working, but I know as soon as I pick the laptop up to bring back to the desk and plug in, it will panic again. If it's something loose it will have to wait until tomorrow-can't get the keyboard off. Thanks for any help you might have!
As far as the RAM, I just checked it to make sure it was pushed in nice and tight. I've been searching the net for answers, and a lot of people are saying it's the Airport card jiggling loose. I cannot get to mine, so I'm bringing to the Apple Store tomorrow. In the meantime, here's what the panic log has:

Not starting on after trying to fix Kernel Panic crash
hello
my macbook pro crash, at first once few days, and now once couple hours.
it notified a KERNEL PANIC, asking to restart the computer. i have done it few times, without doing anything else in order to fix it.
today i tried to fix the kernel panic.
first i tried to click the 'c' during restart, but the system didn't download and got stuck in the apple display, without downloading.
with another restart the system downloaded well.
second i tried to use the COMMANDOPTION+PR click while starting up, and it also got stuck in the apple window display.
but now, also re-restarting, while clicking nothing, the system don't downloading and staying stuck in the apple display.
what can i do to fix it?
i feel lost, would appriciate any help!
thanks, avihay.yeah, i'm sorry for the mess.. I'll try to make it clear..
i tried the hardware test and it found nothing.
i boot again from the correct disk, which came with my machine. i set the disk utility from it, and repaired the hard disk. it said that my hard disk is ok.
will it be ok now? or is the disk utility was unnecessary because on the hardware test the hardware have found to be ok. and in that case - would i need to re-install the operating system and backup everything first? or can it be ok just now, without more coming kernel panics?
thnx

[FIXED]: Kernel Panic - kinit
I have restored an Arch Linux Backup on a newly partitioned drive, which has different partitions than before. However, it will not boot. I get a kernel panic.

Now, it says:

I think this means that your new disk is missing the console device node. If you boot a cd, mount the drive (eg /mnt/dik) and then
mkdir /mnt/disk/dev
mknod -m 600 /mnt/disk/dev/console c 5 1
mknod -m 666 /mnt/disk/dev/null c 1 3

How can I fix kernel task from using 300% of my CPU?
Everytime I disconnect my MacBook Pro from the wall, Kernel Task uses 300% or more of my CPU and stays that way until I connect the power. I've tryed resetting the System Management Controller, restarting the computer, logging in to another account, and deleted all "bad" files (problem files I've found out via Google). Going to Safe Mode does remove this problem, so it's maybe a program error?
The most likely reason for it is that the battery needs to be replaced.

Hi all,
I have a Macbook pro with OS X version 10.5.2 (9C31) with all the latest patches. I've come across a scenario where I can reproduce a kernel panic every time. I have both Transmission version 1.0.6, and the Cisco VPN client version 4.9.01 (0030). If I'm downloading torrents with Transmission, and connect with my VPN client, I will get a kernel panic within 5 minutes. I receive the following stack. I've submitted this the last 4 times its happened, but I'm sure it'll take a while to get fixed. Are there any settings I can tweak to help avoid this in the meantime?

It's been a while since I've coded on a kernel or a kernel module, but I believe if it were a port conflict it simply would fail to bind to the IO pipe since Transmission would already be using it. I believe that these programs are simply a way of causing the error. However, I'm pretty sure that an application should definitely not have the ability cause a kernel panic. Its the kernel, its supposed to be secure

It's used by many other softwares so I have no idea what installed it.
If you have a clue, then go around and update all your programs, if the machine fails to boot, just hold the Shift key down during boot for Safe Mode to disable it.
You also can do a #8 Reinstall Just OS X, that will bump it out of OS X, make sure to Software Update fully afterwards.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Make sure your software is compatible with your OS X version before reinstalling them. -
Constant Kernel Panic Mac Pro 2008
Hello World,
I recently had some problems with my Mac Pro early 2008 (Black Screen at boot) and an Apple Certified Service Provider checked it out and changed the logic board.
Now it works, but wait, what's this? It boots, but always after a few minutes I get a "You need to restart you computer..." Kernel Panic and computer halts.
Tried a few things: zapping Pram, booting from Install CD (to make sure it's not the installed system), Connecting only screen & Keyboard... no change in symptoms. I didnt yet do a long term Power disconnect to reset the SMC, but when I took the system from the shop it was in th box and thus unplugged for a few hours, so that doesn't seem promising either.
It's a plain vanilla system configuration, a 2.8MHZ, 2GB RAM, ATI 2600 system with only the original Apple parts, fully updated.
Of course I will get back at the repair tech, but he just went on holiday and I wont hear from them until next week. Bah. Maybe some genius here can read a Kernel Panic Report from the logs and give me a hint...maybe it's something I could fix myself, I just don't see it yet...I post 2 logs, to show that it seems to me that different applications cause it to panic.

End of Reports. Any Ideas?
Message was edited by: Joe from GermanyThe dependencies suggest a problem related to the video card or video drivers. This could be a bad memory problem or it could indicate a problem with the video card itself or corruption of the drivers.
As a start you might try reinstalling OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Kernel panic f_iocount overdecrement
I keep kernal panic when i set an interrupt in xcode and type "po ....", hit return key, a kernel panic comes.
And get the panic information is f_iocount overdecrement.
Then I launch disk utility to repair my file system permissions twice, and in the some envionment panic again and again.
Then I copy the source code to a new os(10.8) in my removable disk, panic... reinstall osx, and can not fix the panic....
What should I do?
Only in the A file(a source file write my socket schedule thread) can active the panic, in other source files is safe.
When I set a break point in the manager when the manager block in select, and I type po xxxx then hit return, os x is crashed and get the f_iocount overdecrement when i reboot. The real work in Disk Utility is done with ( Repair Disk ).
( Repair Permissions ) is only useful when Applications (Installed with Installer) won't open.
You should also post your query in the developer area nearby. -
"Aiee" kernel panic with 2.6.30 on 64-bit ext4
I'm a longtime linux user, having used red hat, gentoo, ubuntu/debian in the past. I was getting sick of some problems in jaunty so I decided to give arch a shot after some raving from a friend of mine.
Anyways, I've been running into pretty much the same problem on Arch that I had in Jaunty, on two different machines (both dell xeons though). The details of the type of freezing is described in great detail at this 51 page thread over at ubuntuforums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? … rnel+panic.
For me it seems related to disk io. Whenever I try to do something disk intensive, such as builds on large projects, my system freezes completely. I got to the point where I could duplicate it 100% with one particular build, and I tried running it in a virtual console with no X. I got a very vague kernel panic, something like "kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handlers!". No other error messages, no errors in any of my logs.
I tried a lot of things, disabling AHCI, moving to Arch, rebuilding on my second machine, nothing fixed it. Pretty frustrating week at work!
Anyways, I was finally able to get a stable system by downgrading to 2.6.28 and nvidia 180.29. Stable as in, I haven't had a single freeze for about 7 hours now which is a big improvement.
So it really seems to me like a kernel bug, possibly related to ext4. Oddly, Jaunty is also on the 2.6.28 kernel so not sure why I had the problem there.Yeah I've checked my harddrive. And I've done a memtest. The HD is pretty new actually. I have 0 problems using 2.6.28.8-1. I've been running it for the last week, no reboots, no problems. I just tried upgrading to 2.6.30.1-1, and again it's the same problem. Sometimes I can get a kernel panic message (which seems different each time... I just got a cpu stuck bug), and other times it doesn't write out any error before freezing. So it seems to me to be a 29/30 regression. No good log messages makes it almost impossible for me to diagnose though... :-(. Note, I'm setting printk to 8 on boot.
-
I keep on getting Kernel panic approximately every four days. THis is the panic log. Any input will be helpful. I tried running HW Test .. It works fine
This is my hardware configuration

Darwin Kernel Version 8.10.1: Wed May 23 16:33:00 PDT 2007; root:xnu-792.22.5~1/RELEASE_I386Thank you for the possible solutions. I run file system check after every crash (this is force of habit from old UNIX world). I am beginning to suspect Maxtor 1 TB Firewire drive or MPICH2.0. Although I checked my MPI based codes. They are not thread based so there should not be any mutex related calls (unless internally it is done by MPI). Usually user codes can't cause Kernel panic unless some system or library call has problems. Anyway .. Thanks for the tips and I will wait for four days to see if I can reproduce crash after detaching TB drive and not running MPI based codes. Lets see.

Kernel panic/crash using 2.6.36, iwl3945 and airmon-ng
Hi
I'm unable to log what really happens, I tried with strace aswell as valgrind but they don't pick it up. It happens whenever I start airmon-ng with:
airmon-ng start wlan0
I get a kernel panic without being connected to wireless, and with. Also doing it outside of X in TTY1.
Picture from my phone: http://ompldr.org/vNjNnMg
So yeah, not sure where to go from here. It works fine with 2.6.35.

Description : A key cracker for the 802.11 WEP and WPA-PSK protocolsThis issue has to lie with kernel 2.6.36 (and maybe lives on in 2.6.37 with the latest RC.) I had no such problems, up until I updated to 2.6.36.
I have a Realtek rt8187se wireless chipset, and I can invoke a kernel panic every single time, like so:
# pm-suspend
(wake up from suspend)
# iwlist scan
What I see is:
# iwlist scan
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.
eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
Kernel panic - not syncing: HwThreeWire(): CmdReg: 0XFF REIWE bits are not clear!!
Pid: 5357, comm: iwlist Tainted: G C 2.6.36-ARCH #1
The rest is a call trace, with the dreaded blinking capslock + scrolllock keys.
This only happens if I resume from suspend. If I power on the computer, but never suspend, I never suffer a kernel panic, even when I scan for wireless networks.
Bringing the wireless interface down and up, or changing it to monitor mode, has no effect either. The only common factor is resuming from suspend.

Kernel Panics when waking from Sleep
I'm getting many panics sometimes a couple of times of day with a MBP 2.0Ghz. No funny USB devices plugged in.
So there is an extra 1GB ram, but a 5 pass Memtest shows the memory as fine. Hardware Diagnostics shows no problems.
Is this a hardware fault with the Core Duo. I'm thinking that because of the 'cpu 1 caller 0x0019CAEF' in the first lines of the panic logs. And the error is always the same one.
Is this one for Apple Repair ?

Kernel version:
Darwin Kernel Version 8.6.1: Tue Mar 7 16:55:45 PST 2006; root:xnu-792.9.22.obj~1/RELEASE_I386A lot of things can cause a kernel panic, but let's first try resetting the SMC. Here's how:
Turn off the computer (if you just had another kernel panic, this is especially convenient! :D) and remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for at least five seconds.
Put battery back in and turn the computer on.
See if this solves your issue. If not, you might want to try an archive and install, or you could just call AppleCare for assistance (who will in turn probably ask you to do an archive and install). To do an archive and install, just put in the OS X install disc, go through the steps, but when you click "options," choose archive and install.
If you still get the kernel panics after the reinstall of os x, you've got a hardware problem on your hands. -
2007 MacBook (Macbook 2,1) having frequent kernel panics
My macbook has been having frequent kernel panics. They usually happen when there several tabs open on the browser and either skype is running or a video is being played in youtube. In this case one can see the kernel panic coming as the sound on the video starts stuttering. However, lately they began happening even when the computer is not being used. Here is the latest panic report:

I thought about it being the GPU's fault too. Indeed most problems seem related to video (though this panic in particular happened just 1 hour after another one and happened while the computer was not even being used, just idling on the screen saver).
I wasn't sure that the backtrace was directly related to the cause of the panic. I know most modern versions of OS X have kexts that are downright incompatible with the GMA 950, but I stayed on Snow Leopard because I knew it was still compatible... Sadly there are not many Apple stores in France for me to take it for service easily, but I'll see what I can do.
I'd apreciate if anyone has more in-depth insights about this panic report.
