Can't free up memory (from using as a hard drive)

I sometimes use my new ipod nano as a flash drive to transfer large files from my boyfriend's computer to mine. Unfortunately, every time I delete these large files off the nano, it till says that memory is being taken up. I don't know what to do to get my memory back-- I've lost over a gig of space now, and I only have four. I would rather not have to restore, since it's a pain to move all my music back, but I can if I have to-- but I don't want to have to restore as a matter of course every time I've transferred a gigabyte of files! Please help!

Have you looked at other identities sharing your computer? Are the photos etc perhaps in their accounts as well? You can use whatsize to check and see what's taking up all the room, also, look in your application folder and winnow out all the apps you never use. Go to Spotlight and look for the movies and photos to see if they are duplicated somewhere. You have nothing attached to the G5 other than the keyboard and mouse, right?
Please post back with results,

  • Can't download videos purchased from ITunes store onto hard drive

My video Ipod already contains a number of videos. However three recently purchased videos will not download onto the computer. Each time download is attempted the following error message appears " There was a problem downloading. The disk you are attempting to use is full. Removing files and emptying the Recycle bin will free up additional space". We have repeatedly checked and deleted any old stuff on the hard drive - there is plenty of free space yet we can't get the videos onto the computer!!!!!

    there is no longer a 20 GB ipod...only a 30 GB ($300) or 60 GB ($400)

Thanks for that, it was really helpful.
Glad to hear that worked for you. While formatting an external drive with a Mac format is best if it will be used only with a Mac, if the files on the drive have to be accessible to a PC also, it's possible to format it in an exFAT format, which both the Mac and a PC can read from and write to. However, if you do that, do the actual formatting while the external is connected to the PC.

  • Can't move a movie from Mac to external hard drive

    Hi community!
I have troubles with moving already finished movies from my mac to an external harddrrive. My ext. hard drive is 2 TB so space is not an issue. When I try to move my movie-file (15,77 GB) to my ext. hard drive it says:
"The item “(title)” can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume's format"
This is really a problem. I want to share the movie with my family since it is their holiday that I clipped together. Can anyone help me out?
    Best regards,
    Sune

A FAT32 drive can't store files which are 4GB or larger. You need to reformat or repartition the drive to include an exFAT, NTFS, or Mac OS Extended volume, or use a different drive, or use a way other than an external drive to transfer it.

  • How can i transfer itune movie from compuer to external hard drive

I am trying to transfer my itune movies to an external drive in order to free space in my MAC hard drive, can someone help me with this task? thank you

Just movies, or the whole library? The whole library is easy:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.
Just movies can be done with more effort and routine upkeep on your part. There's various solutions depending upon how organized you are and details on the results you desire.

  • Can I recover saved passwords from installation on another hard drive were os has crashed?

My os crashed. The data is still accessable on the original hard drive. I reinstalled windows on a new drive. can I recover the saved passwords from the other drive?

To backup or restore passwords in Firefox you need these two files:
    * key3.db (encryption key; [http://kb.mozillazine.org/key3.db])
    * signons.sqlite (encrypted names and passwords)

  • How can I transfer outlook data from Ipod to new hard drive?

My hard drive had to be replaced last week. Although my music was backed up by Norton 360, my Outlook contacts and calendar were not backed up. How can I transfer my data from my Ipod to my new hard drive? I am running Windowa XP, if that matters. Will a sync to Itunes destroy all my data on my Ipod?

You would need to enter at least one unique contact and calendar entry on the new computer, then when you first sync you should get the option to merge the data.

  • Why can't iTunes play music from read-only external hard drive?

I have a write-protected external hard-drive which I keep all of my iTunes media on. iTunes recognizes all of the files, including the metadata on the id3 tags, and can find the files in Windows Explorer. However, it cannot play the files while the drive remains write-protected. Is there a work around for this as I would prefer to keep the hard-drive protected? Why does iTunes require write-access to play songs? Other media players have no problem playing from my read-only external hard-drive. Thanks for any help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
When you say you can't play through both devices at the same time, what happens when you try, are you able to select multiple speakers, do they deselect themselves, do you not get the option or does it just not work when you select multiple speakers.

  • HT5182 How can I back up photos from iPhoto to external hard drive?

I have a large number of photos that I need to move onto an external hard drive to free up my MBP's internal hard drive.  Most of my photos were imported in RAW format and editied in iPhoto.  I understand from other posts that iPhoto converts these photos to jpegs.  I'm quickly running out of room.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Can I save the email from thunderbird to my hard drive?

I learned recently that I could not pull my email from my web host. I have stuff going back 5 years and want to archive off the older stuff. Can I pull that email (also in this account) to archive on my hard drive?
    Dennis

Mail stored in Thunderbird's Local Folders account is on your local storage, i.e. your hard disk or whatever storage is available to you.
I don't understand what you're asking about "pulling" email. Why can you not get old stuff from your webhost?
And when you say Archive, are you interested in removing stuff from inside Thunderbird, or off your hard disk? Archive is a somewhat vague word and can be understood to mean several different things.

  • How can I backup my photographs from Photos to external hard drive?

LLike everyone else, I recently upgraded from iPhoto to Photo.  What is the procedure to back-up full-size photographs in Photos to an external LaCie Rugged hard drive for safekeeping?  I don't want to use iCloud since with 35,000 photographs in Photos on my MBP, it will cost me $9.99 a month for storage, since I've already spent $3,300 on a new MacBook Pro.

Thanks for your suggestion, LarryHN... I already do this through my Time Capsule, but I wanted to be able to move individual full-size photos to another external drive.  I figured it out tonight when I noticed Photos allows you to export full-size photos to other destinations... such as an external LaCie.  So thanks again for your help.

  • Can I keep my photos from iphoto on external hard drive?

Before I got iphoto I used to keep all my photos on an external hard drive, is there any way I can still do that rather than keep on imac hard drive

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Can I save my movie projects to an external hard drive?

I am an elementary music teacher and often make DVDs of my students' performances.  This is maxxing out my hard drive on my Mac.  I have an external hard drive with a lot of memory, so my question is:  can I somehow put iMovie projects onto the external hard drive, to free up memory on the Mac's hard drive?  If so, how do I go about doing this?  Conversely, would this be a bad idea, and if that is the case, could I move iTunes (also have a ton of music, as you can imagine) or iDVD to the external hard drive?  Or iPhotos?
I'm not high-tech savvy, so need help in simple English, please.
    Thanks so much!!!

Within the project library of iMovie you should see your external drive listed along with the projects stored on your mac.  To copy a project you simply drag the project from its current position to your external drive. You will then get the option of copying just the project or project and events. As Bengt rightly states you should copy both project and Events. If you hold down the alt key as you drag the project you will get the option of moving rather than copying. I would NOT recommend doing this in case there are problems during the copying/moving process (I don't find iMovie to be the most stable of apps) and you might find the original project has been deleted without properly copying it across. Better to copy to the external drive, check it works ok and then delete original.
    Hope this helps.
