Can't get Airport Express to connect to my network

I have a netgear wireless router, and the when I plug in the aiport express, it just blinks yellow. When I run the Airport express assistant, it gives me a warning that windows is not managing my wireless network. This is very frustrating!! What can I do?

I'm sorry you are having problems. When I cabled directly to the Express from my computer and ran the assistant it worked perfectly. After disconnecting the calbe, it connected wirelessly to my existing network. I am running an Aiport Extreme for my base station, I don't know if that makes a difference. When you run the assistant do you select "Join existing network"? There is a great post on here somewhere with other instructions on setting up the Express a different way. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

  • Can't get airport express to connect to internet after ISP changed my modem

Hi. My internet service provider installed fibre optic to my house, so they gave me a new modem. Have not been able to get airport express to connect to the internet ever since. Just get the flashing amber light. Other than paying $50 for phone support, I have no idea what to do. I just use the airport so I can play music from iTunes from my stereo using airplay. I use the airport utility on my laptop.

Does the new modem provide a Wi-Fi network? If it does, and your only goal with Express is for iTunes streaming, the Express would just need to be reconfigured to join the new modem's wireless network. Please check out the following Apple Support article for details.

  • Can't get Airport Express back onto my wireless network???

Just returned from a trip where I had successfully used my AE in temp accommodation. Now I can't get the thing to rejoin my home network. I've reset it time after time, I go through Airport Setup Asst and get to the bit where it says it's updating the AE, congratulates me on setting it up - but the thing never rejoins and all I get is the amber blinking light. Once this happens it disappears off the network until I again, reset to factory settings.
I have tried entering WEP equiv passwords as well as the ASCII but am not sure which one to use now - totally confused. I have another AE on the network which is working fine. I must be missing something unless the thing has gone u.s?
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
    Cheers

    Hi Dan
I have posted a new topic on this because I feel strongly about it.
Here's a copy and paste of what I said:
"I have spent literally the equivalent of 3 full days, configuring, reconfiguring, re-installing, setting up, un-setting up, scouring the internet, phoning people, taking trips to the Apple Store to find a solution. All a total waste of time. Why? Because until there is an update to cure the problem, the Airport Extreme BS will not function properly when used in an environment other than a basic setup.
My network at home consists of 3 XP PC's, two Airport Expresses, and 5 Macs of various models. Until I removed an Express to use it on a trip, all of it worked well. When I came to return said Express into 'the fold' - that's when the trouble started. Mainly that, unless I had security switched to NONE, I couldn't connect the Expresses to the Base station, and my HP PSC2510 wireless printer would not connect either.
If you are anything like me, you will have been through every single combination of setups, restarts, reinstalls you name it. I got conflicting info about the level of security from the Admin utility - sometimes it would report WPA, others it would say WEP.
Cut a long story short, I finally returned the BASE Staion to the Apple Store and got a replacement. I had narrowed it down to that component only. Everything else on the network "seemed" to be fine.
I wondered whether it was a solitary, faulty AEBS, and by replacing that, it would eliminate the problem. In theory.
Brought home new AEBS but this unit also suffered collossally unreliable/unsuccessful connections from Printer, Expresses and one XP laptop.
I have been to the Moon and back with Hewlett Packard trying to work out what could have happened - overnight - to this normally fail-safe wireless printer. No clues, all seemed to be set up correctly. But it WOULD NOT JOIN THE NETWORK!!!.
So, as any mad (as in angry) scientist would do, I set up a "Control" experiment. Keeping everything as it was, all I changed was the AEBS. I swopped the AEBS for my older white AEBS (flying saucer). Guess what?
Within seconds, all connected. Including printer, Expresses, and XP PCs.
All working perfectly. Wrote down all the settings to check exactly the same as on the new (n) AEBS - identical. Swopped back - same problems. No way would it work.
I am no Network expert but have a feeling that it has a problem managing/distributing/assigning IP addresses. Dunno, just a hunch because the printer would connect fine when connected to AEBS by ethernet cable.
So I am now going to return the new AEBS to Apple and get a refund. I don't have time for this and I suggest not many people do.
So if you have a problem like I did, it might be an idea to try another router or eliminate it somehow and check your settings.
    I hope this helps.
    EDIT:
Looking again through a lot of posts on here - I would estimate that they are pretty much linked to the same problem - a few are reporting problems after connecting to different ISP then not being able to get it working again, some saying they can't get a single solitary PB to connect but al the others do. It all rings bells here! I am sure it's an IP problem (but what do I know) I would love someone to see into this. I doubt whether Apple will come up with something before Christmas - let's hope they prove me wrong eh?
Anyone know of a good, reliable wireless router that also allows external HD sharing?
    Cheers!

  • Can't Get Airport Express to Connect to  my D-Link DIR-655?

Here's what I did - I should point out all I wanted to do was connect my PC based iTunes upstairs with my stereo system downstairs. First I tried to have the Airport Express join the d-link wireless network. It joined but playback was choppy and I could not get it to work. Next I tried my solution for the Xbox Live issues we've had, which is to go with a NetGear home wiring etherenet, and try to get it on that, but the network never saw the Airport Express. Last, I simply set up the Airport Express as a second wireless (but only "local") network in the house, and so far it works like a charm - no choppy plyback, and I use my iTouch with the Remote app to control iTunes from anywhere in the house. So perseverance won out. However, it really was a bummer that the other solutions did not work, and proved once again to me the "glitchiness" of Apple products.

I'm sorry you are having problems. When I cabled directly to the Express from my computer and ran the assistant it worked perfectly. After disconnecting the calbe, it connected wirelessly to my existing network. I am running an Aiport Extreme for my base station, I don't know if that makes a difference. • How can I get airport to automatically connect to a network again?

    Dear helpful ones,
I connect to the internet and a printer via a wireless router. Previously airport automatically logged in to my network. Recently, I had to reset my router and modem. Since then, airport doesn't automatically log in. I need to manually select my network from the airport menu to join after every time the computer sleeps or is shut down. The password is still in the keychain. I didn't think any of my computer setting had changed or needed to...
If anyone can offer a suggestion as to how to get airport to once again automatically log in to my wireless network, this would be most appreciated.
    Yours, Jeremy

There's quite a common problem with OS X and getting it to auto-connect, although there are fairly obvious simple ways to solve it they didn't always work, the procedure below is long winded but does have a fairly high success rate.
    1. Move "System Preferences.app" to "Applications\"
    2. Delete all preferred networks in Network Preferences
    3. Delete all Airport password in Keychain Access
    4. Restart
    5. Choose network from drop-down menu and enter password
    6. Restart

  • Help!! can't get my airport express to connect to my network

I have set up my airport express to connect to my network so I can play itunes with it but it says that the Airport has been set up but cannot connect To my network. I've tried it on both my computer and my wife's computer and we have the same problem. I have been able to connect in the past with my Airport express that I had for this one but for some reason I can't seem to connect it using this airport express. Any help would be much appreciated.

When joining a non-Apple WEP encrypted wireless network with an AirPort, you must use one of two different styles for password entry depending on whether the network is protected with an ASCII or HEX key.
    ASCII password
If using a password that is plain ASCII text, use the double quotation mark (") before and after the password. These are case-sensitive, and they are at least five characters long for 40-bit encrypted networks or at least 13 characters long for 128-bit encrypted networks.
    Hexadecimal password
If using a password that uses only the hexadecimal range of characters, add a dollar sign ($) before the password. These passwords are at least 10 characters long for 40-bit encrypted networks or at least 26 characters long for 128-bit encrypted networks.

  • New  router now can't get airport express to work

Att installed a new wireless router.
Everything else seems to be fine but can't get airport Express to communicate with My MAC. Green light on airport device. Just downloaded OX on Mac recently.

Reset the Express to factory and start over.. this is always required when you make major network changes.

  • Can I use Airport Express to connect to a printer, Time Machine Back up drive, second b/u drive, and scanner through a USB hub? if so, how?

I have an Airport Express that connects to my printer. I'd like to add a scanner, and two back up drives (one for use with Time Capsule, another specifically for photographs backed up from Adobe Lightroom.
The printer connects to the Airport Express through a USB hub and is recognized.  I cannot get the scanner nor either of the back up drives to be recognized.  Is there a way to do it or will I need to rely on a USB hub wired to the USB port of the MacBookPro?  If it is possible, can you walk me through the set up for each?
    Thanks,
    Doug Earle

I'd like to add a scanner, and two back up drives (one for use with Time Capsule, another specifically for photographs backed up from Adobe Lightroom.
Unfortunately, the USB port on the AirPort Express will only work with a compatible printer.
It will not work with a scanner, copier, or hard drive.
It should be possible to do what you want by connecting a powered USB hub to your Mac and then connecting the devices to the powered hub.
The setup for the scanner and hard drive would be covered by the manfacturers documentation, so providing specific advice for those types of products would be outside the realm of this support area.
But, if you can provide model numbers, it is always possible that another user who is using those products might see this post.

  • I have a MacPro 2008 workstation without Airport or Airport Extreme CArd isntalled. Can I use Airport Express to connect (wireless) to my wireless network? If so, can I then connect my Airport Extreme to my MAcPro by a ethernetcable ?

I have a MacPro 2008 workstation. It has no Airport/Airport card so I have to use an ethernetcable to connect to my modem. As the MAcpro
is in my office in the attic and the wireless modem is in the basement I have a problem. I wonder if it is possible to use Airport Express to connect to the wireless network? Itshould be like this: in my office I connect the MacPro with AE through an ethernet cable. If I can then get AE to connect (wireless...) to my wireless network I should be ablle to connect my MacPro to internet/wireless network. Is this possible???? Any suggestions are very much appriciated. Thank you.

Apple calls this configuration a ProxySTA.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility.

  • Can't get airport express to print.  Music transfers wirelessly but not the print.  How do I fix this

I cant get the airport express to connect to computer for printing.  It does connect for music but not printing.  How do I correct this

Don't know, how did you hook it up (what kind of cable)? You can send audio through an HDMI connection provided a MacBook Pro is (I believe) from 2009 or newer.
Converting to VGA or DVI will not send audio - if you're using that kind of connection, you'll need to add an audio cable from the headphones port.
Also check the Sound Out setting in the Sounds panel of System Preferences.

  • HELP! Can't Get Airport Express to work.

I used to have a full setup with Time Capsule wireless & Airport Express connected to my stereo. My Time Capsule died last year and I haven't used the Airport Express since. I wanted to set up a wireless network with it instead of having to keep my laptop on the ethernet. I reset the Airport to factory settings and set it up again but I can't get my MacBook to connect to the internet with it. I keep getting a conflicting network ID message. I've tried this before and couldn't get it to work so I just keep going back to ethernet.

And you have a DSL modem, correct?
Might you have the make and model number of this device handy?

  • Trying to get Airport Express to connect to the internet in a school intranet

I can get my new Airport Express to create a new network in my wife's classroom, but the school has an intranet that controls the internet access, so the Airport can't get on the internet.  What do I need to ask the school IT administrators for in the way of IP addresses, etc., and where do I include that information in the Airport start-up?

You will have to be careful about asking questions of the IT guys since most schools prohibit the use of wireless routers on their networks. A more sophisticated network can be configured to automatically detect the presence of a router and simply not allow it to connect.
We need to understand how the school's network works.
When your wife connects her computer to the school network using an Ethernet cable, what procedure does she follow to first log on to the school's network?
Is it the same as most hotels where once you have established an Ethernet connection between the computer and network, you open your Internet browser and a log in page will automatically appear. There you must typically enter a user name and/or password.
If yes, the AirPort Express can likely be configured to work. Post back with your findings and we will continue.

  • Can I get Airport to automatically connect to a stronger Access Point

    Hello,
I am running Leopard 10.5.3 and have 2 access points (not apple) on the one network. One AP is at the opposite end of my house to the other.
When I make it to the opposite end of the connected AP, I get only 1 bar and it usually drops. Can I set airport to automatically connect to the strongest AP automatically even if it isn't out of signal?
    I hope this makes sense?

I have to Wireless access points on the 1 network yes.
I have one of the AP's set up as a preferred network.
However once I am far away from it, I only get 1 bar of strength and then the connection becomes inconsistent (will go to no signal and then back to 1 etc.) At this point when it is doing this no signal to 1 I want airport to change to the AP. Is this possible?
    I hope that is clearer.

  • Can I use airport express without connecting to a router?

I hate trailing a long wire across my room just to listen to music through my (old but still fantastic) stereo system. I share a house with friends and our router is in the living room.. does the airport express need the router to work? sorry if this is a dumb question, there just doesn't seem to be an answer anywhere!

You do not need the AirPort Express to connect to a router in order to stream iTunes. In its default mode, the AX provides a standalone wireless network. You would just need to connect to this network to stream. The drawback, of course, is if your are getting your Internet access via another wireless network, you would have to switch networks to perform either.

  • AirPort Express not connecting to my network

I have an AirPort express that I was using as it's own router that I now want to connect to the network at my parents' house so I can use AirTunes with their amazing stereo. I am having problems getting it set up though.
I plugged it in, and went to adjust the settings on my AirPort from sharing its own wireless connection to joining an existing connection. After I did this is when I ran into issues. It found the existing network just fine, and I entered the password (WEP key) and everything, just fine. After a few steps like that, I got the confirmation screen "please wait while the AirPort Express resets" blah blah blah.
After it resets, my AirPort Utility can't find it anymore. I can click "rescan" a hundred times, but nothing happens. I have a flashing amber light.
I thought it might be the WEP key problem, so I adjusted the settings on my parents' router (Netgear... not my favorite) so that the network is secured via WPA. I did a hard reset on the AirPort, followed all the steps again, said that i wanted to join the existing connection, found the network, entered the password all just like before and the same problem. I have tried doing hard resets about 5 times now seeing if I missed something in one of the steps and I can't find what I have missed.
Still have the flashing amber light.
Someone help me! I am stuck.

After many, what seemed like, hours and hours of trial and error, I finally got my AirPort Express to join my network via 802.11n.
    My network setup:
A Linksys 802.11g router set with no security, MAC Filter, G-Only
A Linksys 802.11g access point set with WPA-PSK (TKIP) G-Only
A TrendNet 802.11n access point set with WPA-PSK (TKIP) N-Only
    All are on different channels.
I have 8 devices that are wirelessly connected.
    Symtom:
AirPort Express will extend or join a network on 802.11g networks.
AirPort Express will not extend or join my 802.11n network.
    Solution:
After trying many many different setting combinations, I was NOT able to get AirPort Express to extend my 802.11n network. But that didn't matter since I want to set up AX as bridge.
AirPort Express will join my 802.11n network after I configured the access point security to WPA2-PSK (AES). I've confirmed it a few times. AX fails to connect whenever I set wpa algorithm to TKIP. This is not a problem on 802.11g mode. This was a pain since some of my devices can't do AES. At this point, AX connects to the network and I can connect devices to the ethernet port and the devices can grab an ip address from the router but cannot access network beyond AX. Can't even ping the router.. only the AX.
After a while I decided to configure TrendNet AP to limit Channel Bandwidth to 20Mhz HT Green Field and lo and behold, I have internet access. Again, this required reconfiguring my other wireless network since Green Field mode interferes with 802.11 b/g networks. I'm not sure if Green Field is necessary but I'm too frustrated to try to go back to Mixed mode. In any case, setting the bandwidth to 20/40 definitely does not work.. which kinda *****.
Anyway. Now, I have AX running in Bridge mode connected to a switch and a few machines happily connected to the switch and accessing the internet. I'm too spent to tinker anymore with this network.
Hope this is useful to someone.
