Can't get Airport Extreme Card working

I recently purchased a refurbished Airport Extreme Wiresless card for my EMAC from the Apple Store, installed it, but now when I try to configure the network connection, Wireless Airport is greyed out. I don't have the Extreme Station and didn't think I needed it, but I cannot figure out to make the connection to my existing wireless cable modem router in my house. Any help in this situation would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, SBeck

Technoqueen,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does the card appear in Applications> Utilities> System Profiler under the Network> Airport Card heading? There have been a number of reports over the years from posters here in the Discussions to the effect that the Airport Extreme card is an extremely tight fit in the eMac. The card can fell as if it's fully seated in the slot, yet not actually be all the way in. It takes a surprising amount of force to fully seat the Airport Extreme card that last fraction of a millimeter; you need to push the card until just short of where the 50-lb eMac is shoved away from you on your work surface.

I can't get airport extreme to work with iPad

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me. We have two distinctly different printing problems. Let's try tackling them one at a time if you don't mind.
In order for the iPad to print to a printer it would either have to be AirPrint-enabled or you would need another solution, like PrintCentral for iPad or Printopia. Unfortunately, I don't believe your Canon printer is AirPrint-enabled. There aren't many printers on the market that currently are. All of them, that I am aware of, are HP devices.
Now for the PC. I would go with what you have already suggested and that is try disabling either the Windows or third-party software firewall. Which version of Windows is it running? Just in case it's XP, here are two excellent iFelix articles on how to do so with or without using Bonjour.

  • Can't get Airport Extreme card to work in G5 Powermac

I'm probably being a dummy, but I need some help.
My main computer is just under two years old and has funcioned on a network through ethernet. Internet access comes through cable and I have a Linksys wireless router. My G4 ibook has operated on this network with an airport card quite successfully.
I decided to get rid of some cables and put the G5 on wireless. I installed an Airport Extreme card, connected the antenna. The Network Status panel tells me that the Airport card is turned on but not connected to a network. The signal indicator on the menu bar is greyed out.
Any attempts I have made to find a network signal or configure the card seem to be doomed.
    What am I doing wrong?

IF those are the only two options, I don't know what it could be.
    Going backwards,
Double check your antenna on the card.
Pull up Software Update, perhaps an update will come up for this situation.
Boot to an OSX install disk, Run Disk Util and run a Disk Repair then Disk Permissions Fix. Unlikeley bit worth a shot
    Return the card?
    Sorry man...

  • Can a "bad" Airport Extreme Card work intermittently, i.e.

work sometimes and then suddenly disconnect and reconnect? I'm having trouble with Safari crashes, and slow or no page loads... it was implied that the Airport Extreme Card may be not working properly. Can this happen?
I figured it either works or don't work, but maybe it's slowly dieing? I don't know.
Anyone with experience with the card dieing or being intermittent? Is there a good way to test it?
    Thanks for any observations.

Well here's a new one, but I might be speaking too soon. I certainly hope not!
The AirPort checked out just fine at the Apple Store, and sure enough within an hour back home my connection/browsers crashed. I shut down the computer and unplugged the gateway. It ran smooth for three whole hours before crashing this time (the longest time on record).
There's been one more thing in the back of my mind, and before calling the DSL company to return the gateway I figured I'd give it a try.
I unplugged the KENSINGTON wireless optical desktop for Mac, keyboard and mouse with the RF receiver, and guess what?
I haven't crashed in " 10 entire hours"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BIG RECORD!
    Who would know? Not I.
I emailed Kensington Support and asked whether the RF reciever might interfer with a wireless connection via airport, but I don't expect a reply. Niether a reply from the Yahoo!SBC/DSL support, because nothing, i.e. no video works with Mac OSX on their homepage. Bummer! But that's another problem I CAN ignor.
Has anyone here ever heard that a wireless keyboard and mouse can mess around your airport connection?
    So for so good.

  • Will airport extreme card work on other wireless systems

will airport extreme card work with other networking systems such as time warner cable with a router?

Note, Airport Extreme on PowerMacs is limited to 802.11g.  If you find you get a router that is 802.11n, and have devices that need 802.11n speed, they should be on a different wireless network.  Otherwise you can set the network to be 802.11n and 802.11g for both 'n' and 'g' devices to hook up to it from the router in question.  Be sure the PowerMac in question does support Extreme, and not just the original Airport by visiting this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1621
And identifying your Mac in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3082
If you can't find your Mac on the article, go to Apple menu -> About This Mac and tell us the Machine ID. If it is a notebook, the name of the machine is on the screen frame. If it is a machine with a display and a built-in optical drive that has no name, it may be an iMac.  That is significant as well.  Since you posted in the PowerMac forum, without telling us your machine, we can't help you further until you do.

  • Will airport extreme card work with my emac?

I want to put an airport extreme card in my Emac. Please let me know if it will work in my machine. My Emac specs:
    Power PC G4
    CPU Speed: 800MHz
    L2 Cache: 256 KB
    Memory: 1Gb
    Bus Speed: 100MHz
    Purchase year: 2002 (before USB2)

    According to:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107440
Only the eMac ATI Graphics model and USB 2 models could take Airport Extreme.
    According to:
    http://www.designedinca.com/macs/emac/may2003/800cd/
the ATI Graphics model replaced the August 2002 to May 2003 which was also 800 Mhz.
Thus your machine was the one before the Airport Extreme became available:
    http://www.designedinca.com/macs/emac/aug2002/800/
So no, you can't put an Airport Extreme card in it. You can though get Airport Extreme speeds via a LAN capable WiFi access point via its 10/100 ethernet port.
You can also buy the original Airport card from:

  • Airport Extreme Card work fine on new Mac Pro (Early 2008)?

I was looking at this Airport Extreme Card ( http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=MTg 5Njg&fnode=home/shopmac/macaccessories/networking&nplm=M8881LL/A ). Is it simple enough to install? And does it work? I'm not a complete noob, and I have built my own PC before, but I'm wondering if there were any quirks when installing this since I'm fairly new with Mac Hardware.

You do not need to have the Extreme base station. It is possible to set up the Express to "share" the routers internet capabilities and provide it through the ethernet port thus to your computer.
You do however need to setup the Airport express to match some setting at the original base station(router). Unless your IT savvy, this could prove to be a hard task for the everyday user.
If your trying to sustain high transfer rates... wired is always the solution. I personally used a 100ft Cat-6 cable, wired up through my large apartment ceiling to give "connected" benefits to various electronics at the other end. And the cable costs less than 99 dollars
Your other option is to get what is called an extender.http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=23680 17&Sku=N100-2096&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&CMP=OTC-GOOGLEBASE
This one here works on the G network, and is even a netgear product. This also costing less than the Express.
    Hope this helps

  • New  router now can't get airport express to work

Att installed a new wireless router.
Everything else seems to be fine but can't get airport Express to communicate with My MAC. Green light on airport device. Just downloaded OX on Mac recently.

Reset the Express to factory and start over.. this is always required when you make major network changes.

  • I cannot get airport extreme to work. Can you help me?

I have a G5 Power PC. I recently purchased a macbook and an Airport Extreme. I cannot get the airport to work. Can somebody help me please??
G5 Power PC and macbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   new OS X on Macbook

I plug the ethernet from the airport to the back of the modem (a Webstar unit) from my cable provider. Then I plug the other cable from the back of the airport into my G5. Then plug in the power cord. I get lots of flashing lights - "thinkin & blinkin", but then I get a message that it cannot locate the server. Even rebooted. I've been waiting for the IT guy to call/email me back me back but no response yet. I'm guessing I may just need a new location, but I'm not wired to think IT-like (I'm a very right brained graphic designer), I I don't want to screw anything up.
Do I need to just go through a new internet setup?

  • Can't get Airport Extreme and Express to join same network

I recently bought an Airport Extreme so I could create a wireless network with my Airport Express. THis way I could browse the internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time. After spending hours trying to get both AP Extreme and Express linked together in a WDS network, I have failed time and time again. I have no problem setting the AP Extreme as the WDS main. My iMac and laptop connect to the AP Extreme just fine. I can set up the AP Express to stream music via iTunes to my stereo without problems. But to get them working together in the same network has got me stumped.
I've set the AP Extreme as WDS main and Express as WDS remote. They are both set to same wireless channel. Where am I going wrong? Is it a 802.11n/802.11g compatibility issue?
    I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks.

    adrian,
I have done this a dozen time today with different base stations like yours.
The only thing I can think of is this:
    1. With the WDS Main, make sure you have the address of the Remote in the box.
    2. With the WDS Remote, make sure you have the address of the Main in the box.
    3. Make sure both base stations have the same network name in the wireless tab.
    Then restart both base stations.
Let us know what you find out.

  • Can't get airport extreme to connect to xbox

Hi! As you can tell from my post I am really new at this, i will try to explain as best I can:
I have an Airport Extreme Base station(AEBS) connected by ethernet to a Westell 327W router, my airport is in bridge mode and has is successful networking three other laptops and a printer in the house. The problem is only with my xbox 360 The 360 reads the base station correctly, but will not accept the password (I have double-checked with ISP and the password is correct, X-box just won't accept it.) I have attempted to program with the Equivalent Network Password that I found (Airport>Base station >Equivlaent Network Password) to no avail. I was told by x-box tech that AEBS is just not compatible with 360 system. Please help - i don't want to re-do the whole system to get X-box live! Thanks. (I hope this description makes sense)

My son has his xbox live working wifi with the aebs (n).
However, he frequently complains about delays in general and delays with certain other players networked into the game. Occasionally, cable internet can slow down and xbox live regularly has its own issues. What is needed here is someone who can suggest alternative configurations using the aebs dhcp/nat settings. The airport utility help on this subject seems tentative and noncommittal in the vague suggestions provided. Miscrosoft xbox live is a reality that needs to be addressed. I am working on this issue when I can now. If I get any useful info, I will post it here. Is there an online gaming discussion group? That could help.

  • Can't get Airport Extreme to recognize my eMac.

I just invested in a MacBook and AirPort Extreme - I have the internet running on the MacBook but cannot get the older eMac (OS2.8) to recognize the wireless connection. I'm using a cable modem for internet connection. It looks like there is an AirPort Utility in the eMac but it doesn't recognize the MacBook as a base station. Would appreciate any help.

In the system profiler of the eMac there are two AirPort entries: AirPort Admin Utility and AirPort Setup Assistant (both files are from 2003). Does this mean that I have a wireless card?
No those are just applications used to configure one of Apple's base stations.
In System Profiler, look under Network and then click on "AirPort Card". Is there any information in the right column? If not, the wireless card is not installed.
If not, how can I reconnect the eMac to the cable service without shutting down the MacBook Base Station?
When you say "MacBook Base Station" I assume that you mean AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). You can connect the eMac to the AEBS via Ethernet without shutting anything down.

  • Can't get Airport Express to work with Windows

I got a used Airport Express to use as a wireless print server. I got only the Airport Express; no manuals or CD's or anything. I have been reading through the manuals and everything online, but I can't get anything to work. It seems like I need to get the Airport Express Assistant, but I can't find it. I got the Airport Admin Utility, and that installed fine on Windows Vista. Then I installed what I thought was the Express Assistant, and it just seemed to change the Airport software in the start menu, but I still don't have the Assistant, only the Admin Utility. Anyway, I open the Admin Utility and it opens the Base Station Chooser. There is nothing there, so I rescan, and it seems to do nothing. It doesn't find anything anyway.
Where do I go from here? I am kind of stuck. I am trying this on a Windows Vista PC which is hardwired to a Linksys WRTSL54GS router. I have the airport express plugged in and the light is flashing Amber. I have a HP psc2410 plugged into the airport express that I would like to print wirelessly to.
    Thanks for any help.

You don't necessarily need the AirPort Setup
Assistant, you should be able to set up the AirPort
Express Base Station (AX) with the AirPort Admin
Utility...as it is a much more powerful tool. You
need to make sure that you are using the version for Windows. At this
time, the AirPort software is only supported for
Windows 2000 or XP. A Vista-version has not been
    released.
    I suggest the following...
    - First, perform a "factory default" reset on the AX to get
it back to it's original "out-of-the-box" state.
    - Next, temporarily connect your computer directly,
using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port on the
AX during the set up phase.
    - Then set up the AX as a "wireless client."
I have this same problem. I have a Vista Windows notebook and I am trying to get airport working to play music wirelessly through my home stereo. The "base station chooser" software does nothing on my Vista notebook.
I used a friend's MacBook and was able to set up the airport as a client so I can see it listed in my Dlink router DHCP Client Table. The airport express box is plugged in, has a steady green light and everything looks good except there is no option to choose "computer" or "home stereo" speakers in my iTunes. i installed the airport express CD including the itunes it came with.
Any ideas how to get this working on vista? Previously i had the newer version of iTunes 7.1 installed and the airport express CD told me it couldn't complete the install because a newer version of iTunes was installed. I uninstalled the iTunes and reinstalled the CD including the iTunes version 4.
