Can't get apple hardware test to run.

Hi,
I'm on a macbook pro late 2008 running 10.6.8 and I can't get apple hardware test to run.
I upgraded with a 10.6.3 disk and there is only one install disk. I insert it restart whilst holding d, nothing happened, restart whilst holding alt + d, again nothing.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

You will need the #2 installation disk (that came with the MBP)  with the Apple Hardware Test instructions on it.
Ciao.

  • Can't get Apple Hardware Test to work

So I'm trying to run the Apple Hardware Test. I start the computer up and hold "D". It boots into OS X like a normal startup. So, I plug in the Ethernet and hold option-D to do the AHT from the Internet. It tells me "Apple Hardware Test does not support this machine".
So, I try to install the "iMac EFI Update 1.8" from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1493 (which is for my iMac model, which is a iMac (Mid 2010)), but it says "This software is not supported on your system." I also tried the later version, v1.9, from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1498 but it isn't for my iMac and so I get the same error.
So now I'm stuck. What should I do now?

Thanks that was it. It says AHT on the disk itself. I successfully ran it, and it found no problems ("No trouble found.") I ran the basic test only because I have 16 GB RAM, and so I imagine it would take a long time to run the extended—probably at least two hours? And I don't know what more that would find that the basic wouldn't?

  • Can't perform Apple Hardware Test of any kind

I can't perform an Apple Hardware Test – on a late 2008 MBP – from original software disk, because my superdrive (matshita dvd-ram uj-868) has long been broke.
Whenever I insert any kind of disk, it doesn't even read neither the machine recongnizes it and it's really a **** of a bum to eject it (when lucky I manage to remove it with force-eject).
Anyway, these are the sollutions that Apple tells in order to perform the AHT
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11342
    If you have a new Mac (…) I don't
If your Mac has OS X v10.8.3 or earlier (…) I'm running OS X v10.8.4
If you updated your Mac to OS X v10.8.4 or later, use the system software disc or USB flash drive that came with your Mac. Well, obvious reasons…
    So, what can I do?!
P.S.: I would like to run the Apple Hardware Test:
To know what happened to my SuperDrive.
For a long time it keeps with high temperatures (at least 70°C 158°F), causing the loud fans to pump up. Even with low %CPU usage (already have SMC fan control)
To have an overview of how is my machine doing.
    Thank you!

I've already tried and it didn't work because my MBP can't' be upgraded to OS X internet recovery (using option+D)…

  • Apple Hardware Test automatically runs?

    Hello everyone,
When I turned on my 13" macbook pro today, it ran the Apple Hardware Test. I ran the test and found no errors.
Is it normal for macs to automatically run this diagnostic tool? Because ive done a quick search on the internet and it seems as if the Hardware Test runs when you insert the software disk that comes with the macbook.
There is no CD in my optical drive, and I bought the macbook 6 months ago.
So is everything ok? because it worried me quite considerably that something is wrong my by macbook.
    Thanks!

AFAIK, they don't even document this in the ACMT material. That's nice. It means I shouldn't need to stock all those application DVDs at work. Usually I just load the appropriate ASD revision onto my external HDD, but that may just come in handy some day.
I'm also betting AHT is installed on the firmware chip. Honestly, the downloadable version for service techs is only like 3-5MB on average. And EFI is what a modern BIOS/firmware should be... It initializes the hardware, then hands things over to the OS and gets out of the way. You have a cheap little 32Mb or 64Mb flash chip, you'd probably have room to spare.

  • How long should the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) run?

II'm running the AHT on a 2012 quad core i5 iMac 16gb/3TB .....the progress bar moved quickly to about 7/8 done, about 4 minutes, but now has been sitting there for 40 minutes.
can anyone provide experience or input as to how long I should expect it to sit there?
    thanks

If you run AHT in extended mode it can take over an hour to run, one factor is the HD capacity.

  • Running Apple Hardware Test... without ability to see the screen

Here's a nice conundrum- my screen isn't working. I want to run Apple Hardware Test, but since I can't see it... no dice.
I'm pretty sure this is the NVidia 8600GT problem- Apple has acknowledged that these graphics cards are defective. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
The only way I can get into the computer is to use screen share- I've tried an external monitor, and it doesn't work. And I can't screen share when the apple hardware test is running- any idea how to see this? Another option- is there anyway I could start it without seeing anything, and then look at the results later? Are the results saved in Console or anywhere?
    Thanks1

I dont think you need to do a hardware test.
Its the 8600 video cards, thats why Apple extended the warranty on the cards. Just bring it to the Genius Bar and they will sort it out for you.

  • Apple Hardware Test CD not seen

I need to run the Apple Hardware Test but the computer doesn't see the CD when I start using the C key, or even when I use the Startup Disk System Prefs. I have also tried using an external CD/DVD drive & that doesn't work either. In case the AHT disk is faulty I have downloaded & burned a new test disk. Nothing works. Any ideas?

Since this is the aluminum discussion group, I'll assume you meant to post here about your 1.67Ghz Powerbook. First, there is no Apple hardware test that you can download for it, at least from Apple. You need the original OS X disks that came with the system. If you had Applecare, you can download TechTool Deluxe, which does similar testing.
In order to run the Apple hardware test, reboot while holding the alt/option key down, then you can choose the Apple hardware test, or hold the D key down, which should go right to the test. When I run it, I use the alt/option key. If you have the original OS X disks that came with the system, make sure the one you're using says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the gray label. If you put the OS X disk in an external drive, using the alt/option key when you boot should allow you to choose it.

  • How can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3

Does anyone know how can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3. Thanks.

    Sean and Andy -
I have to agree with Andy here. I am having the same problem on a mid 2010 MBP (6,2). I have already read the AHT info provided by Sean's link, and they are less than helpful. I'm sure they will be helpful to those who find that they work, but they are confusing if this is not the case. For example, my MBP(6,2) came with ONE (not two) installation disks, so the instructions don't work for me. Another issue is the instructions confound the descriptions related to the MBP, the original (delivered) software (OS X version), and the current installed OS X upgrade software.
So here's what does NOT work for me...
         (A) I cannot install 'Disk 2', since I never received this with my original (new) purchase in mid 2010.
         (B) I have checked my firmware versions and they are all up to date, as per Apple's information.
         (C) As suggested in another thread, I looked for /Library/Core Services/.diagnostics and it was NOT present. I followed his instructions, downloaded the correct (I believe) dmg, and installed it. It is in the correct place, and I can see all the invisible files using Pathfinder.
         (D) When I re-start holding down the D key (immediately), it just goes through the normal boot routine; no evidence of AHT.
(E.1) When I re-start holding down OPT-D, I get a spinning globe, and then it prompts me for a network (wi-fi) connection.
(E.2) For some unknown reason, the prompt identifies between 2 and 5 of my --neighbors'--  routers, but does not show mine. (??!!)
(E.3) The routers are listed alphabetically; however, my router SHOULD be at the top of the list by this criterion, but it is nowhere to be seen.
(E.4) The 'internet recovery' process then allows me to enter a network name AND password. I do this, for my current wi-fi router, and the process rejects it as an incorrect login ID. It is NOT an incorrect login ID!
So, now asking Sean and Andy (or anyone else) for further suggestions... ???  As Andy suggested, many people ask questions here because they have -already- worked through the 'official' recommendations, and have found them to be inadequate.
Any advice would be appreciated!  TIA.
    Ed

  • I want to run apple Hardware Test but can't find it on any CD's.  I bought my iMac in 2009.  I think it had 10.4 installed.  It's not on my installation disk.  Where can I find it?

I want to run Apple Hardware Text but can't find it on any CD's.  I bought my iMac in 2009.  It came with 10.4.  Apple Hardware Test is not on the installation disk.  Should I have it?  Where can I find it?  I"m now running 10.7.4.

    The disc plainly state:
To  use the AHT, hold down the D key as the computer starts up.
Works here. However, there was an issue with installing Lion that screwed this process up.
Mount disc 2, run this command in the Terminal app, OPTION-click & hold Finder's Dock icon, and select RELAUNCH:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1
    That unhides all hidden files/folders.
Now, drill down to /"Applications Install\ Disc"/System/Library/CoreServices/ and drag the .diagnostics folder into your Lion boot volume's /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder. That might require you to authenticate to copy the folder into the CoreServices subfolder.
Run this command to hide the normally hidden files/folders and RELAUNCH the Finder again.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0
This should allow the machine to boot into AHT when restarting and holding down the D key.
If that doesn't do the trick, run this command in the Terminal app:
    sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics
At the Password: prompt, carefully type in your admin password, since nothing shows up on the screen, and hit the return key. Then, try another restart, holding down the D key.

  • Can't get into Apple Hardware Test mode

    Hi,
I want to run a hardware test, but when I follow all the instructions laid out (insert install disc (in my case Leopard 10.5.4), restart mac while holding the D key) the mac just continues to boot up as normal.
I don't understand why it's not booting in AHT mode. The Leopard disc isn't the original install disc that came with the machine, the original discs would've been Tiger, but this is a bought and paid for Leopard dvd. AHT should be on there right? I don't have the Tiger discs anymore.
    Lee

    HI Lee,
You need the original install disks that came with your iMac in order to run the Apple Hardware Test. Those disks are "*machine specific"* ...
The Leopard disk you purchased is just the Mac OS X for Leopard install disk...
Contact AppleCare here: http://www.apple.com/support/products/ and see if they can help you.

  • Where can I get an Apple Hardware Test CD? (for a dual 867mhz G4 powermac)

My Powermac G4 Dual 867mhz is having issues. It either won't boot to the 10.5 server DVD, or if It does, it hangs with the spinning gear.
Booting to the 10.5 workstation CD works great.
The 10.5 Server CD is good, as I've tested it on my G5.
I want to use an Apple Hardware Test CD to do some heavy-duty scanning, but I bought this G4 off eBay and have no original CD's. Where can I find them?

    Hi-
Download a copy of the AHT here.
Burn it to CD, and off you go.

  • Can Apple Hardware Test disk work when a hard drive has no OS installed yet

I removed a bad original hard drive from a PowerBook G4 12" aluminum notebook. It made clicking sounds as it ran, and would not boot. I replaced it with a 320GB Western Digital HD. I also upgraded the original 512KB memory with 1GB.
Before removing the bad hard drive, I was able to boot just beyond the language selection dialog from a full installation CD (Mac OS X v10.2) while holding the "C" key during power on, but could not install it, of course, on the bad hard drive.
Now with new hard drive replacement in the PowerBook (formatted via fire wire from a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard) and the upgraded memory, I ran a Disk Utility check via fire wire and found the new hard drive in the PowerBook to be in good working order and ready for an OS installation. However I can no longer boot the PowerBook G4 with the full installation CD in the customary manner, getting instead the flashing question mark over the finder folder icon.
I decided to see if there might be some other problem by using a PowerBook G4 Apple Hardware Test disk. Upon booting from the test disk, I get a message that declares the disk will not work with the PowerBook G4 machine.
    What's up?

There's more to my original question than whats on the face of it. Please read more about this below. However, I will still wish to know if an AHT, say an original one if that's important, will do it's thing when no OS is installed.
Pretty sure that I'm NOT using either disk or sets of disks that came with this G4 PB. Included among what I do have are 6 grey disks:
    __PB G4 Software Restore 1
    __PB G4 Software Restore 2
    __PB G4 Software Restore 3
    __PB G4 Mac OS 9 Install v9.2.2
    __PB G4 Mac OS X Install v10.1.4
    __PB G4 Applications
And 2 Jaguar full install DVDs:
    __Mac OS X v10.2 Install Disc 1
    __Mac OS X v10.2 Install Disc 2
I was hoping to be able to find something useful among these disks - if not in a strait forward manner, them by some manner of hacking.
I know how to use my MacBook Pro create a disk image that will house any number of these DVDs. My thought is to create something that can be cloned to the PB G4 via fire wire. I just need to be sure how to daisy chain multiple DVDs in terminal mode, if more than one DVD is required in the cloning process.
I have placed an order for Leopard 10.5 - full installation DVD direct from Apple.
Once received, I will have 14 days to return it unopened. So, I want to be sure this PB G4 is operable before I break the seal on the Leopard package.
Therefore it's not so important that I clone everything from the original installation - just enough to see that the PB G4 boots and runs in Finder. If I can achieve that much, I will advance with Leopard 10.5 when it arrives.
