Can't get audio to work on my Panasonic Plasma smart TV when I connect a Toslink optical mini to Toslink optical digital to my mid 2009 MacBook pro?

My MAc book pro 5.5 is mid 2009, Processor speed 2.26 GHZ MacOS X VERSION 10.68 Leopard. My Tv is a Panasonic Plasma smart TV TC-P50ST60. I ordered from Amazon a Toslink optical mini to Toslink optical digital cable meant for Macbook pro 2009 forward. I changed the settings on both TV and Mac but I still can't get audio to work on TV. I believe my Mac can't see the audio output from the TV. Any advice with step by step instructions on how to fix it? could it be they sent me defective cables? Thank You for your help.

When I spoke with Apple I made sure I told them that my Macbook Pro was Mid 2009 and he ensured me again that those to cords will work. I realize that with the newer models it does put through both sound and audio but because of my model I don't think it does obviously because I have played with both Sound on my computer and Sound on the TV and nothing works. Sometime Apple can be good but man some people lol he even told me he verified my computer model on the computer and that's what came up.
So new question would be what kind of cable would I be looking for to get audio? Anyone before I call back to Apple and see what they say hahah

  • My mid-2009 MacBook Pro's hard drive is near death. I want to install a new SSD and work from scratch. Please help.

Recently, my mid-2009 MacBook Pro has been crashing when I close the screen ("it's having a problem recognizing when the screen is closed/open and deciding what to do, error overload etc.").  It wasn't an SMC issue so I took it to an Apple Store, ran some tests, and decided my hard-drive is failing.
Not wanting to spend an insane amount of money on some "official apple hard-drive," I want to install a new 256GB SSD instead.  Hoping to squeeze as much life out of this computer as possible (in January I upgraded from 4 GB RAM to 8 GB), I would like to try and start from scratch, i.e. back-up important folders, music, photos etc. and only take that to the new hard-drive.  If someone could explain all the steps I need to take to safely complete this task (or point me in the direction of a guide) I'd appreciate it.
    Potentially Important info:
         Model:                mid-2009 13'' MacBook Pro
Processor:          2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
         Memory:             4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
         Software:            OS X 10.8.4
    Some additional questions I have...
Should I be concerned with making a fully bootable back-up (not sure what that is called) as well?  If so, what program should I use to create it?
How much more life should I try and push out of this computer?  I'm an engineering student and really only use it for web-surfing, music, and
word-processing.  The batter was replaced in March, the RAM was upgraded to 8 GB in January.  When the battery was swapped, the trackpad went           nuts so that's new too.  Only other issues are a slightly loose audio jack and the left side of the screen being slightly wobbly (hinge is worn I'm told).

Well there is no "official Apple HD / SSD" in any regard, no worries there.
If as you say youre only using same for surfing and word processing, why the need for a SSD? You would not notice any speed diff. in use on either of those,....in boot times yes, but in word or surfing, not.
You can push it likely a few more years, for mere surfing and word processing,...many many years.   Up TO the point that any major fixes become unrealistic relative to getting a new(ER) machine.
Concerned with a boot clone?  yes and no.  Its an ideal immediate recovery, since you cannot boot from Time Machine, ....in case of HD crash, recovery takes seconds from boot, or 20 mins or so from removing old and installing a clone. All the prosumers and pros have at least one updated clone of their prime machines.
You can do a "fresh install" if you choose, however if your current drive is FINE, why not merely clone it and save yourself some headache?...., but that is your prerogative of course.    Ideally 2 drives, one to backup your data (you need that regardless of installing a new drive for sake of a backup/archive,...ideally 2 actually, not merely one).
You could clone internal to NEW SSD/HD , ...then offload unnecessary files to an external to free up space and clutter and run off the clone, and this would only take a couple hours......the clone itself takes approx. 40+ mins.
    CLONE Apps :
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.

  • Can't install a stable Windows 7 on my Snow Leopard mid-2009 Macbook Pro via Botcamp

I just erased the whole disk with Disk Utility and re-installed a fresh version of Snow Leopard on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro with my original install disk and updated all the software.
I then created a 400GB partition via Bootcamp Assistant for Windows and successfully installed Vista.
I then successfully installed Windows 7 (not an upgrade) over Vista (I only have the official upgrade disk) and installed Bootcamp in Windows with the original OS X DVD.
I then upgraded Bootcamp from version 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.2 to 3.3 and then to 4.0.
None of these versions have resulted in a stable version of Windows 7 because the screen randomly turns one color (usually blue or white) with no cursor or interaction possible and I have to shut the computer down by holding the power button.
I've tried the whole process with 32 bit and 64 bit versions with the same results.  The funny thing (not so funny, really) is that WIndows becomes increasingly unstable the higher I go with Bootcamp.  I've even tried running the Vista to Windows 7 upgrade utility but Windows 7 is totally unusable.  Once at Bootcamp 4 the system can't even get past the windows boot process.
I'm pulling my hair out here because I can't think of anything else to try.  I'm suspecting the problem is driver related.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest you start over with the install of Windows. You can use an Upgrade version of Win 7 to do a Clean install.
Basically you have to Not put in the license key when asked and also uncheck the option to Auto Activate Windows when the system gets online, mThen once it is installed and you are at the desktop go to the System applet in Control panel and Select Activate Windows. Then put the license key in.
If for some reason that doesn't work then you do a second install of Windows7 over the top of the current install and that make the installer think you are Upgrading and the Activation will go through.
It is all covered over at the Windows 7 forum.

I’ve got a mid 2009 MacBook Pro.  Today, I updated to Yosemite 10.10.1.  I also updated Safari to 8.0.2.  Now, anytime I open Safari, it immediately quits and give me an error page that says, Safari unexpectedly quit and suggest that I can click on a Reopen button and restart it, but it just does it again.
I read some of the questions and responses here and went to ~/Library/Safari and threw out the webpages.db file and emptied the trash and rebooted.
      No luck; same problem.
    BTW: Mail works
Any ideas how to get around this?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

  • How do I connect my mid-2009 Macbook pro to my HDMI television and get sound?

How do I connect my mid-2009 Macbook pro to my HDMI television and get sound?

Use a mini-Displayport-to-HDMI adapter and a standard HDMI cable to connect the computer to the proper HDMI port on your computer — the one that is paired with the separate RCA audio inputs (see the TV's manual for this information). And connect the headphone port on your MBP to those inputs with a cable that has a 1/8' stereo headphone plug on one end and two RCA plugs on the other. You'll also need to select the proper HDMI input in the TV's menu system, and you may have to select the headphone port as the audio output in the Sound pane of System Prefs on the Mac (or it may be selected automatically).

  • I have a mid 2009 Macbook Pro and i know the Mini-display port does not support audio out but does it support HDMI out? or do i have to buy a Mini-display to DVI and then a DVI to HDMI adapters?

Run MDP to HDMI for picture. Use a cable like this to run sound from your audio out on your Mac to your TV's audio in.  That's about all  you can do.

  • I have destroyed the motherboard of a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro. How do I find out the technical specifications so I can give accurate information to someone who buys it for parts?

I recently had an unfortunate incident with a glass of water and a mid 2009-MacBook Pro. 13 inch screen.
According to the techs at the genius bar, the screen, keyboard, chassis and hard drive (160g) were still all good - as were all components other than the Motherboard.
I just completed the complete erasure of the hard drive, but don't have the technical specifications at my disposal.
Does anyone know how I can get them - the guy at apple said he didn't think he could help?
    Serial No. Is available.
    Thanks-

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install a 64-bit Windows 7 or Vista version in your Mac. Make sure you downloaded these drivers > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630 Also, if you have the Snow Leopard DVD you used to upgrade your Mac or the OS X DVD that came with your Mac, you can use it to install the Boot Camp drivers

  • Only Apple Branded Hard Drives Work in My Mid-2009 MacBook Pro

My Mid-2009 MacBook Pro (actually, my wife's) experienced a hard-drive failure about a year ago.  This was a 500GB 7200RPM drive that came BTO from Apple.
It's easy enough to replace HD's, so, I did it myself with a Seagate 7200RPM 500GB drive, the same model as the one from Apple, but I got this one from Seagate, not from Apple, so it didn't have the Apple logo (and firmware?) on it.  The drive did not work.  I was able to format the drive using Disk Utility, but when I tried to install Snow Leopard on it, it would fail.  I placed the new drive in my other MBP (early 2008), and installed SL, no problems.  Booted to it just fine.
I put it back in the 2009 MBP, and it would not boot - it would show the flashing folder with a question mark.  I put the drive in a usb enclosure and the MBP booted from it just fine (well, a little slower because the usb speed, I presume).
I bought another Seagate and experienced the same problem.  I bought a Hitachi and experienced the same problem.  I took it to an authorized Apple repair facility who told me that the HD was bad (which was obviously false, since all 3 HD's I tried worked just fine in my other computer).
So, I took it into Apple and gave them the whole story and they ran overnight hardware diagnostics and were unable to find (or fix) a problem.
So, I played stupid and brought it back again, saying "uh, my hard drive broke, can you fix it?" hoping that they would try to replace the HD and fix the problem or at least diagnose it.
Well, they put an Apple branded HD back in, and it works just fine.
Seemingly, that would be problem solved, and life has been fine for the last year.  But, now we bought an OptiBay to ditch the DVD drive and place a 750GB (non-apple) drive in the optical bay.  To my surprise, the non-apple drive works, but, it is pretty slow (we put our iPhoto library on there, and it chokes very badly when you ask it to do anything, such as zoom on a picture, play a video, go to full screen, etc.  It takes about 30 to 45 seconds of SBOD to perform those tasks.
I am wondering if there was any way we could have damaged the SATA connector or driver?  Why would only Apple branded drives work in the main HD bay? I don't know if an Apple branded drive would preform better in the optical bay or not.

I recently saw a similar situation described in another forum and someone directed the OP to look for a jumper on the drive. I raised my eyebrows--that sounded like old PATA technology--but, sure enough, the OP found a jumper, changed it and everything worked. This apparently changed the timing on the drive to match Apple products. I'm leaving town and won't have much time to search myself, but try a forum search for "SATA jumper" and see if something rings a bell.

  • Mid 2009 macbook pro (10.7.2)- can i install leopard and lion on partitions?

    Hello,
I have just bought a refurbished macbook pro and want to install 10.5 leopard on a partition of the hard drive so that I can run my original software that I use on my 2008 Imac (eg Protools 7.4 which would cost hundreds to upgrade as protools 7.4 won't work with snow leopard and protools 8 that would work with snow leopard won't work with my original mbox so would have to buy a new mbox/protools!). The disc 10.5 (leopard) disc that came with my 2008 Imac doesn't work with my macbook pro but would another Macbook pro specific disc work?
    Thanks in advance!!
    Specs-
15 INCH, MID 2009 MACBOOK PRO
Processor  2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)

That machine should have shipped with Leopard, so yes you can install Leopard on a separate partition. However, you will need the original install disk to do so...they are model specific, and you can only obtain these through AppleCare. Call them & see if they will ship you such...there will be a small fee.

  • How can I export slideshows created in Aperture v3.3.2 from Mid-2009 MacBook Pro-17 to blank DVDs?

(Fifth futile attempt in two hours, before I learned there was a Post webpage – I’m new to ApSuppCom - and after I learned that I am not allowed to update previous content, so I had to back out, make a few changes, and start over.)  How can I export slideshows created in Aperture v3.3.2 (complete with superimposed captions and music tracks) from Mid-2009 MacBook Pro-17 to blank DVDs ?  (Some other specs: Mac OS Lion 10.7.5; Capacity 499.5 GB;  Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core  2 Duo; Memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3; Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256MB)
I cannot do a copy (export) without various error messages appearing and the inevitable stoppage occurring.  Always with the DVD Video Player final message reading, “Supported disc not available.” Advisors and Mac Geniuses at local Apple Stores have told me to try Roxio Toast.  When I visited the Roxio website, and found numerous other company products, the descriptions all seemed to suggest that most of the apps shown can easily export videos to DVDs, but nothing was said about finished digital slide shows being exported.  At future events soon,  I hope to be handing out these finished DVDs (free) to the people in them.   Any help will be greatly appreciated. A.Z.

How can I export slideshows created in Aperture v3.3.2 (complete with superimposed captions and music tracks) from Mid-2009 MacBook Pro-17 to blank DVDs ?
Aperture cannot burn slideshows to a DVD.  It only can export a video of your slideshow.
In Aperture 3 you use the "Export" button in Aperture's slideshow project to render a video to a folder on your disk.
Then you use iDVD or another program to burn a video DVD.
I cannot do a copy (export) without various error messages appearing and the inevitable stoppage occurring.  Always with the DVD Video Player final message reading, “Supported disc not available.”
Could you please describe the exact steps that are causing these error messages?
How are you exporting your slideshow from Aperture? Which settings are you using? And how are you importing the video to iDVD or Toast to burn a video DVD?
For more suggestions see Karsten Schlüter's user tip: How to create a video-DVD? (Macs without iDVD)

  • I have a mid 2009 macbook pro with a bad dvd drive. Can I use an external drive?

Is there an external CD/DVD drive that will work on a mid 2009 macbook pro with a bad SuperDrive?

    Hi parrotdawg,
Please look at this post first:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25385804#25385804
If that doesn't help, I have a Samsung SE-208AB/TSBS External DVD-Writer that works well with my mid-2007 MBP 15".  Note this this drive requires 2 USB ports but doesn't use an external power adapter.  Also, the above trick worked for me after I got this drive, so now I use it a Region 2 DVD player.

  • Can't get audio to work for HD DVD

Anyone have any insight into what audio enoding works for HD DVD? I've tried both aiff and ac-3 to go along with MPEG2 video and my Toshiba HD A2 won't play back sound from either type. Help!

I have used both on the Toshiba A2. I assume the build file had sound when you tested it in the Apple DVD Player?
I have not played with the audio settings much on the Toshiba, do not know if there is a setting there that can change things.
I can take a look and run some tests to see if I can get it happening. Also if you like I can put together a small project to see if you can also get it to run.

  • I have a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro 13 with no restore disk; it has OS 10.8.4 I believe there is something wrong with the OS due to I can not install flash player to view Youtube videos and the when we plug in a Bose headset the sound out will work sometimes

I bough a used Macbook Pro mid 2009 that came with OS 10.8.9 it didn't have a backup restore disk with S/N W8******66D
When trying to view some youtube videos; a window would pop up saying "it needs adobe flash player is required for video play back get the latest flash player" but after downloading the file and during installation would have errors and will not installed.....tried to reboot and install again.....but still the same.
The othe thing I had noticed is when using a good Bose headset with mic the sound output would noticed the headset and then switch from headset to Internal speekers and headset.....thinking that there might be something wrong with the plug in port of the computer or the headset.....the headset works with no issues on my iPad so there must be something wrong with the computer.....tried to move the plugin around the port but no change....while the headset is plug in can hear a short clicking noise and the sound would get lost and back again......but with nothing plugin to the port there is no issue with the sound or mic.
Thanks for your feed back......it looks like I have two different issues one is a software issue and the outher is a hardware issue

The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.
Click the Try something new! link at the bottom of the YouTube page.
I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.
