Can't get backups out of the trash

Moved a lot of old backups to the trash and now they are stuck there. When I try to empty/secure empty the trash I get error code 8003. I also can't move the files now to any other location or I get "…these files cannot be modified…" message. Before the error messages started popping up the Mac Mini would start to delete then the system would freeze but now the files refuse to do anything.
I could really use some help on this as I have tried everything I know with no results. Haven't tried any Terminal commands as I'm not accustomed to it and don't really know what to do there. I just need to get rid of all these old backup files.
Mac Mini Core Duo, OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

Trash – Error Code 8003
If they are Time Machine backups, try turning off Time Machine.

  • Can't get photos out of the trash?

I just tried using iPhoto Diet on my library (around 10,000 photos & 9GB). It moved a bunch of photos into the Trash that, it turns out, aren't duplicates. So, I want to take them out of the Trash and put them in my main library.
The trouble is, I can't seem to do that. I've created a new folder to put the files into, but when I drag the photos out of the trash the icon never changes to the green "plus" sign that you normally see. I've tried using the "Export..." command but it's greyed out.
Is there any way I can get these photos out of the Trash? I'm a little confused right now! This is iPhoto 6.0.5 under OS X 10.4.8 (PPC).

    Hi Terrence,
Sorry, you're right: what I meant was that I couldn't put them back in an Album, not a Folder. Interestingly enough, I just created another Album and tried it again. I selected all the photos (around 900) that were in the iPhoto Trash, then dragged them into my new album.
The cursor turned into the green "plus" icon as if it were ready to let me move the files out of the Trash. Then, strangely, iPhoto didn't draw a black box over the destination album like it normally does. I clicked on the new album I'd just created, and it was empty. Stranger still, it looks like the photos have all been put back in their correct albums?!

  • I recently deleted some old backups from my external hard drive and now I can't get them out of the trash can.  What can I do to remove them from the trashcan?

How do i delete a backup file from the trashcan?

  • I bought the Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book for CS6 by accident and I have CC. I know, stupid mistake. But I can't take return the book. Is is similar enough to CC that I can still get use out of the book? Thank you so much

Each version of Adobe products builds upon the previous ones.  Some things like filters and advanced features may evolve or become deprecated over time, but the basic tools have remained pretty much the same for decades.  As long as you know there are subtle differences between versions, I think you will still get a great deal of value from C in a B for CS6.

  • I unintentionally deleted the first segment of some video.  I was able to get it out of the Trash and into "Finder", but I cannot restore it to iMovie and the original video.  Help!  How do I move the video (now in Finder) back to iMovie?

I deleted (to Trash) a segment of "raw footage" from an iMovie project that I did not want to delete.
I was able to retreive it from the Trash and move it to Finder, but I cannot figure out how to move it back to iMovie.
How do I do this (restore the video segment to the start of the project)?
Or, do I have to load the original video again from the camera?

    @ "Afterimages":
Well, yes, I suppose I could re-import the video.  (LIkely ALL of it, dammit!)
So, unless I'm mistaken that would be the "long way" to resolving this issue.
I was able the take the deleted video out of the Trash and now it's in Finder.  Why can't I simply re-insert it into iMovie where it orginally was?  That would be the simple solution, just "click and drag", or something like that, correct?  Maybe that's impossible?  (In which case, I must ask, "Wouldn't the creators of iMovie have considered this "boo-boo" and done something to remedy it easily?"  I doubt I'm the first vidiot to do this...

  • I dragged some of the Time Machine backup folders into the Trash and now I can't empty them out of the trash because it says the applicaiotns ar ruining - what can I do?

I have dragged soem of my Time Machine folders into the Trash. Now when I try to empty the Trash it says it cannot empty some of the files because the applicaitons are running.
What can I do to delete them and completely empty the Trash.
NOTE: the Trash is on my iMac, not the Time Machine backup drive.
    Thanks!

    Greetings Dennis,
Time Machine handles file deletion of its backups or you can use the Time Machine window to tell Time Machine to delete specific files: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    Follow the steps here: http://Pondini.org/TM/E6.html

  • Getting stuff out of the trash

    Hi!
I used iMovie to audio record a meeting, and through a mix-up (shutting the computer down before quitting the program) the audio track wound up in the iMovie trash. Is there a way to get the audio track out of the track and preserve it. All the options seem to involve deletion.
    Thank you!!

Great! Worked just fine, especially when I followed your directions properly. Dragging the starred project file onto Quicktime produced an error message, but then I looked at contents -> media -> "voice01" (the only file there), and dropping that on Quicktime started it right up.
thankyouthankyouthankyou! I promised to get these minutes typed up "before Thanksgiving," so guess what I'm doing today!

  • Can't erase backup folder in the trash

    Don't know what to try.

Oh, never mind. I found the alt key.

  • Can't get sound out of the computer

Song file should play thru the computer speakers, but it doesn't. I'm getting MIDI input into Logic, but something is missing farther downstream. It has worked in the past, but that was a year ago and I've forgotten how to do it. I can't use it at all until this problem is fixed. Too bad Logic is so complicated!
iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   MIDI keyboard, TASCAM MIDI interface, Logic Pro 7 with EXS24

Fr.BlayZay, I'm not sure what screen you're referring to. The Preferences>Audio>Drivers>Core Audio screen is accessible either through LogicPro>Preferences>Audio... or through Audio>Audio Hardware and Drivers... In either case, here's what my screen shows: Enabled (checked), System Memory Requirement 66 MB, Driver TASCAM US-122 selected (not Built-In Input or Built-In Microphone), I/O Buffer Size 512, Recording Delay 0, Max Number of Audio Tracks 32, 64Busses (not checked), Universal Track Mode (checked), Larger Disk Buffer (checked), 24 Bit Recording (not checked), Software Monitoring (checked), Process Buffer Range Medium, Rewire behavior Playback Mode, Maximum Scrub Speed Normal, Scrub Response Normal. There's nothing about Default Output on the screen. Maybe you can give me a clue about how to access the screen I need. Thanks! (and unfortunately this part of Logic is NOT fun!)

  • Simple question: I can't get my files out of the trash and back in iMovie

I was working on a project just now and iMovie crashed on me. Fortunately, all the clips I was importing were saved in the iMovie trash, but I can't drag them out of the trash and back into the clip menu! There's got to be something simple I'm doing wrong. Help!

If the project is saved on an external drive, check the disk format. And rule out software compatibility issues with third-party iMovie plug-ins and QuickTime codecs.

  • HT1454 Can not get video out from my ipod touch 3rd gen. Any ideas? It should nt be diffiicult to do this on the 21 st century, or not?

After having spent EUR 130 on cables from apple, i still can not get video out from my ipod touch 3rd gen. Any ideas? It should nt be diffiicult to do this on the 21 st century, or not?

Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media.  You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else.  As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC.  Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.
