Can't get Canvas and Timeline Windows to Show

Not sure what happened but Canvas and Timeline windows won't show. Pls help!

I'm completely new to Final Cut Pro (I just got Studio), and I've been having the same exact problem: I open up Final Cut Pro, open a new project, and I only get the Browser and Viewer windows. I go to Window/Arrange, and I still can't open up the Timeline or the Canvas. I would just double click on a Sequence, but I don't know what the difference is between a sequence and a clip.
Just to help you guys out, I'm working on the "Into the Blue" thing from the Training DVD; I had started working on it, but quit Final cut, and when I double clicked on the Project (I Saved it to Mac HD) to open it, I only get the Browser and Viewer. Please forgive my ignorance, but help! I'm panicking because I don't know what to do!

Lost Canvas and Timeline windows and can't get them back

I'm new to Apple after many years with Windows. So I'm feeling my way around a bit.
Anyway, I just started using my new FCE, imported my first 60 minutes of home videos, and was getting ready to edit them when I lost 2 of the 4 editing windows - Canvas and Timeline. So I went to the Window command drop down and noticed both Canvas and Timeline were "greyed out". Browser and Viewer were not greyed out and both are working properly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is most frustrating. (I thought only Windows applications had frustrations!)

As Da Nam suggested... double-click on the sequence icon in the browser to open it... this will open the timeline and canvas windows.
If it's another problem.. try pressing control+U to restore to default window lay-out.

Can't Access Canvas and Timeline

I logged all the video I need a couple of days ago, but when I tried to edit it, the canvas and timeline will not appear. Under the Window tab, they are both faded, and nothing I tried would make them reappear. I have no idea what to do to make it work. I tried to save it in an email and open it from another computer, but whenever I try, it makes the timeline and canvas not work on that computer as well. I've tried opening FCP first and then my project, but the timeline and canvas disappear as soon as it opens the video files. Help!

Just a note to let you know I was having the same problem with Final Cut Pro 7. This Topic got me going.
Been a couple of years since I used Final Cut Pro 5, but this new iMac was begging for a Final Cut Studio upgrade.

Can't open Canvas and Timeline

When I open a project, I see the Browser and Viewer. The Canvas and Timeline don't open.
Under Window, command 2 & 3, canvas and timeline, respectively, are dimmed so I cannot click on them.

Can't get artwork and mini itunes to show

Hi guys...
The artwork in my itunes works fine, but i have another user on my computer so I downloaded itunes for them, but when we started putting songs on, it downloaded the artwork but it won't show on itunes or the ipod. Is it something to do with how you configure the software when you install it, if so, is it something that can be changed.
Also when i click to get the mini store up, it comes up but doesn't show the actual store even though it is working in the normal 'itunes store' link.

How can I get PPro CS6 timeline to correctly show clip stretched in AE?

I have a 2 second clip in my timeline in PPro CS6 that I want to stretch to roughly 18 seconds. I did the following steps:
1. right clicked on the clip in the timeline and chose Replace with AE composition
2. when AE opened, I clicked on stretch in the composition and stretched it to 1000%
3. I changed the composition settings to reflect the new duration of 18 seconds so I could view the entire clip in the timeline
4. With the footage highlighted, I went to layer/frame blending and picked frame mix
5. on the composition timeline, I toggled the frame blending on
6. saved the AE composition
7. Back in PPro, the clip is now pink and shows that it's a linked AE composition, but the length of the clip has not changed and therefore only plays the 1st 2 seconds of the clip
In order to see the entire AE linked clip, I have to either click on the AE linked clip that shows in the project panel, down to the timeline or right click on the clip already in the timeline and choose speed/duration. Unlock the link between duration & speed and change the duration to the length of the AE stretched clip, leaving the speed at 100%.
My question, how can I make the AE linked clip automatically show correctly in PPro?
Also a related question, since the composition is a linked compostion in AE, the frame blending box isn't available on the composition timeline so I have to go to Layer/Frame blending to turn frame blending on. Is this correct? If so, how can you set the quality to draft or best? Also should I pick frame mix or pixel motion to get the smoothest frame blending?

Fuzzy and Ann are correct in my opinion. Premiere Pro thinks that the duration on the timeline is just the first part of a clip that has been given a rather long handle, so to speak.
Just drag it out as far as it goes. Premiere Pro will not let you drag it out farther than the end of the comp under these particular circumstances.
Why not do that automagically for you? Too dangerous. What would it do with anything on the sequence out to the right of the clip? Overwrite it or push it?
Now, I suppose that a good way to do that would be to alert you about the problem when you return to Premiere Pro and ask you how you want it handled, but that would take a Feature Request. And I am not sure what would need to happen if you had made a bunch of changes to other links other than that one before returning to Premiere Pro.
Before I suggest that you do that, I have to ask why you didn't just use the Time Remapping feature of Premiere Pro do do the same job. That way Premiere Pro would have known what you wanted to do. I understand that Timewarp and Time Remapping both have different strong and weak points, I am just curious if you tested both and decided on using After Effects for a particular reason.

Final Cut Express 4 Canvas and Timeline Lost

Somehow I managed to close or minimize the Canvas and Timeline windows and I can't get them back. They are grayed out in the Window Menu and Command-2 and Command-3 doesn't bring them back. Also Window->Arrange->Standard just rearranges my browser and viewer windows that are still visible.
If I open an entirely new project, all the windows are there. But if I open this specific project I was working on, I only see Browser and Viewer and not Canvas and Timeline. Does anyone know how to get them back!!!!!?
Someone already answered this question, but it didn't work. Can someone else help?

Go to the FCE Browser and double click on your Sequence to Open it.

Canvas and Timeline have been closed

I have a strange issue with FCE and the Canvas and Timeline windows. I fat fingered a close app shortcut and used W instead of Q - it closed the canvas and Timeline windows which is what W does. Now, for the life of me, I cannot get them to open back up on this specific project. I feel like a complete dope.

Double click "sequence 1" in your browser.
Timeline represents one or more sequence and canvas presents the view for this sequence (at playhead).
No opened sequence (or a closed one with Command-W), no timeline nor canvas.

My Canvas and Timeline are gone and I can't get them back

Hey everyone.
I've been using a new HD camera and i have had to change a billion settings on FCP. Now that I am no longer using HD it was time to go back to the way they were, but I must have done something wrong. My canvas and timeline are gone and I can't get them back. I tried going to window and just pulling them up but I can't click on the canvas and timeline buttons...
Please help!!! I am fairly new at final cut pro and I need help. I have a film festival deadline approaching and only hope that some kind person out there can help!!

Trash your FCP preferences. This will reset FCP to it's defaults.
Close Final Cut Pro and open a Finder window.
Click on your user name in the side bar.
Open the following sub folders Library, Preferences, Final Cut Pro User Data.
Place the following files in the Trash:
Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs, Final Cut Pro Obj Cache, Final Cut Pro Prof Cache.
Empty the Trash.
Open Final Cut Pro. You will be asked to choose your working format (Easy Setup) and designate your scatch disks.

How to get back my Canvas and Timeline?

I closed the canvas and timeline and then saved the project. Now i don't know how to get them back.

Double click on the sequence icon in the Browser to open a project.
Unless you have a project open, they will not be displayed.

There is no Windows for Boot Camp. just buy a copy of Windows.

Final Cut Express 4 - Can not display CANVAS or TIMELINE

In just one of my projects the Canvas and Timeline doesn't appear.
Window>Arrange>Standard does not affect this. Selections for Canvas and Timeline are all grey'd out. My Browser window shows the tabs for my sequence and Effects tab. Clicking or double clicking this doesn't help.
Think I must have used some combination of keys to get in this spot. Other projects are not affected. Is there a set of keys that I need to use.

I am presently doing a 'render all' that will take 45 minutes. I thought more of what you said. Since I have not worked on this project in 6 months. (Somewhere along the line I decided to do an iDVD Archive and had deleted the original FCE project. I did have the ability to rebuild everything until I discovered that I had lost my TimeLine and Canvas.
I thought this was because I had hit some function key by mistake and therefore Timeline and Canvas were lost. In rebuilding, tonight, from an Document>Final Cut Documents> Autosave I was able to go to one of these version. Almost all the input, photos, video clips from old clips, iTunes, etc came back as "not connected" I deleted all those "bins" and File>Import>folder to those items. It turns out my Sequence was under a BIN and when I deleted that bin by TimeLine and Canvas disappeared.
Now I have renamed the BIN so as to contain the Sequence 1, for the project.
It turned out so far to be quite painless. Did learn the importance of the Sequence and its relationship to TimeLine and Canvas. Although I must admit I don't understand that relationship?
Rendering now says 2 hours for completion. It is almost enough to think about investing the grand to go to Final Cut Pro (not something I can convince my wife as she thinks I spend far too much time on this stuff.
Again, thank you for jogging my memory to think about previous versions such as the remark to use the AutoSave feature of FCE. As a side note I set that to every 15 minutes just a few days ago. I often get sidetracked and forget what I am doing and need the extra protection of what FCE does for me without me thinking about it.
I will leave this open until I know the above procedures worked. Still doesn't explain deleting a Sequence deletes the Timeline and Canvas. Any explanation on that? Thank you so much - now I will be able to sleep without worrying about this.

Canvas and Timeline

I accidentally closed the canvas and timeline. I go to the window tab on top then go to where it says "canvas" but it won't let me click on "canvas". The same is true for the timeline. How do I get those two windows back?

Hello and welcome to the forum.
You don't have a Sequence open so there's nothing for the Timeline or Canvas to display. Double click on a Sequence icon in your Browser and the windows should reappear.

I've lost my canvas and timeline (careless of me, I know)! Have spent two days creating my DVD and now can't find where they've gone. In the 'window' tab canvas and timeline are greyed out. Please, please, please help........
