Can't get eth0 to work (via-rhine)

First some info: I'm using a Biostar M7VIG Pro (via-rhine NIC) motherboard with a Duron CPU.
When starting the network 'dhcp' is 'busy' until it times out.  What makes this strange is I ready intalled Rehat on the same system without any problems!
I also tried using 'dhclient' but it times out too...
Any ideas?

Actually for better/faster testing I was manually (/etc/rc.d/network start) starting the network.   The configuration is NOT the problem, I did a couple more test and it is the '#CONFIG_SMP=y' option built into the kernel causing the problem!  I also found that if you pass the 'NOAPIC' parameter to the stock ArchLinux kernel (via grub) that the network will also start fine.  It make me think it's a interrupt related issue…
It's always easier added (building) to a working system then trying to debug a non-working system.  I think the initial installed kernel should be changed to one that is safest (least problematic features) for most systems.  How about making a separate SMP-Kernel like you do for SCSI?

  • Can't get eth0 to work after fresh install .

I just finished installing Arch; everything went well, with the exception of Networking .
When booting into the new system and logging in as root, I did ping www.google.com and the output was like 70+ tries at receiving data from google, although it did manage to find out gogole's IP address .
This is my Networking section, omitting the commented lines :
    HOSTNAME="computer"
    interface=eth0
    address=
    netmask=
    gateway=
    NETWORK_PERSIST="no"
    *EDIT*
After posting this, I thought maybe I should try and see if pacman works, and I was able to properly -Syy and -Syu .
I also checked that "network" was in the rc.conf DAEMONS line .
ping still doesn't work, but I will try going on with the post-install configurations .

Try setting the dns server to 4.2.2.2
I was thinking that, except that he can look up the address of Google, the address of the mirror, and presumably is able to use tcp and udp to download packages based upon their URLS

If it's showing the red disabled screen due to incorrect passcodes then you may need to put the iPad into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 - you should then be able to reset the iPad via your computer's iTunes and restore/resync your content to it

You are making some progress with setup of wireless network. Apparently there is reliability problem with the wireless connection. Perhaps you want to refer to following Apple support documents and start tweaking parameters in the router to improve the reliability. I used to have third-party routers such as Belkin and Netgear but switched to Apple Airport routers (Time Capsule then Airport Extreme for now) because of incompatibility issues whenever Apple upgrade Mac OS X. But since Apple develops Airplay protocol as alternative to Bluetooth for wireless audio/video streaming (with much better bandwidth) and must be deployed in any wireless network, there is no reason third-party routers not working for Airplay protocol.

  • Using airport extreme in china - can't get it to work

I just moved to china and have been trying to set up a new Airport Extreme dual band to my high speed internet connection but can't get it to work (bought the AE in the US and worked fine there). I have a Green light on the physical AE, and in Network Status section under Network Diagnostics I get green lights on Airport, Network Settings and ISP, but yellow/red on Internet and Server. The type of internet connection is direct, supplied by China Telecom with no router/modem in my unit, but with ethernet cable running directly to the phone room connection. I manually set up the AE using the same IP address, subnet, DNS as shows up when I plug the ethernet cable directly into my computer, with the internet working fine with a direct connection to computer and no AE.

What you did makes complete sense Mike, but if you don't have access to the router you may have to get your ISP to recognize your Extreme's MAC address:
AirPort Base Station: ISP provisioning may prevent Internet connection via broadband (cable or DSL)
For example: Suppose that you have a computer connected to a cable modem before purchasing an AirPort Base Station. Your Internet service provider might recognize your computer's MAC address as the correct one for your account. Your new base station then takes the position on your network that was formerly occupied by your computer, but you have not taken any action to let your Internet service provider (or its hardware) know the new address. The base station then sends packets to your Internet service provider that do not contain the required MAC address, and the packets are ignored.
It may be as simple as leaving everything disconnected from your service provider for a period of time. You might also try turning Connection Sharing "off" (bridge mode).

  • Can't get ringtones to work!

I really don't want a ringtone on my iphone but I tried to use the feature and simply can't get it to work. When I click on the bell in my library (already have purchased songs) I get asked for my password. I enter my password and then it asks again and again and again....
Now I can buy songs via itunes without this problem. I saw some people with the same issues however I didn't see any responses. Anyone come up w/ anything?

Well, I found another thread that said to reset your warnings in your account, but don't do that. I was able to sign in before, but now I get the same thing you are getting, sign in over and over. itunes 7.6 is obviously very buggy and needs a fix.

  • Can't get VLAN to work

    Hello,
Maybe I'm missing something elementary.. this is my first time trying this out and just can't get it to work.
I've got an xserve on a netgear smart switch on port 13. The netgear is hooked up to two different networks (204.x.x.x via port 1 and 128.x.x.x via port 2), and I have 2 VLANs setup on the switch (vlan 1 has port 1 and port 13, vlan 2 has port 2 and port 13).
The xserve's interface that's on port 13 has a 204 IP and works wonderfully on the 204 network. I then tried to setup a VLAN via sys prefs network and that appeared in the network configs list, and gave it a 128 address. However, even with all the right settings, it won't show up at all on the 128 network.
Is there something basic that I'm missing?

Oh, thats not exactly what I meant
    Basically:
The server serves Web and QTSS via 204 to the world via en0.
Then, there's 5-10 machines or so on 128 (and 1-2 on 204) that sync over 3TB of data to the machine via 128 (this sever is the only one we have on site that has raids hooked up to it, so its the central data storage so to say), so en1 is pretty much completely saturated between 12am and 8am (and during the day when there's a lot of new work going on). Originally we used to do this over the primary web interface and all the web traffic would suffer (and especially qtss... we'd start getting disconnected errors all over the place when we started up massive copies).
Half of the machines are 204's and the rest are 128's, which is why we want the ability for en1 to be able to talk locally to machines on either 204 or 128, without having to interrupt the main interfact (if that makes any sense). Does that seem like a sensical solution?
If it also helps visualize a bit:
I only have access to register 8 machines on the 204, and TONS on the 128, but im not allowed to serve .com traffic on 128. Technically, the 128 does talk to the 204 locally on location, but its done through a nasty switch and we dont see much higher than 10Mbps tops.

  • I can't get iTunes to work properly on Windows 8

I can't get iTunes to work properly on Windows 8. I tried everything and iTunes is NOT compatible with Windows 8. There is either an iTunes issue or a Microsoft issue.

I finally got it to work right. Some files and folders (iTunes video files, etc) were referenced to my iTunes account, I copied from my backup (external) Hard Drive to my system Hard Drive. The only thing that can keep me from accessing my wish list for some time is a very heavy Internet traffic via iTunes players to iTunes Store. So everything is now NORMAL.

Can't get Airprint to work on my new Brother HL-3170CDW. I have an iPhone and iPad and nThe printer documentation says it's Airprint ready, but I don't know how to get it working.  All 3 MacBooks in our home can connect to it via the network, so I know the printer is set up correctly for that purpose.

My Microsoft Office 2004 stopped working after upgrading to Mountain Lion.  How can I get it to work again, or, how can I uninstall MT?

Office 2004 Applications Won't Work in Lion
You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • When i tried to download iOS8 on my iPad Mini it told me that I needed to connect my iPad to iTunes, I have done that and now it says I need to restore my iPad. How can I get my iPad working without losing everything on my iPad?

When i tried to download iOS8 on my iPad Mini it told me that I needed to connect my iPad to iTunes, I have done that and now it says I need to restore my iPad. How can I get my iPad working without losing everything on my iPad? I don't want to lose my apps and photos!
    Help would be much appreciated!

If you are getting the connect to iTunes screen then it's too late to take a new backup and/or copy anything off it. Prior to starting the update did you take a backup, either to the cloud and/or to your computer's iTunes ? If not then have you recently taken a backup that might have your photos and apps content/settings in it ?
As long as the apps are still in your country's store then you should be able to redownload them via the Purchased tab in the App Store app (and the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage on your computer's iTunes), and if the apps store their content on a server/cloud service then you might be able to get their content back from that - if they store their content on the device then you will need to have a backup.
For our photos you could try doing a search for programs that claim to be able to recover content from a device - I haven't used any so I can't suggest one.

What ADSL modem do you advise to use with my new airport extreme? I have tried a basic TP-Link ADSL2+  modem and I can't get the configuration working. What modem does Apple recommend?

Ok well I have looked around some more and have found this to be the most up to date official response to my question as seen at this link here:
    http://www.actiontec.com/support/product_details.php?pid=41#q27
Can I Bridge the Actiontec MI424WR router that Verizon provided, when I signed up for FiOS service?
The MI424WR does not have a bridging option, and neither Verizon nor Actiontec support attempting to bridge it.
The desire to bridge the MI424WR is based on a misunderstanding that it is a modem as well as a router. Actiontec does produce DSL Gateways that have a Transparent-Bridging option, which bypasses or disables the router function and allows the Gateway to act simply as a DSL modem, when it is enabled. Many consumers do not realize that with FiOS, the ONT (typically outside the home) is the device that handles changing the FiOS signal from Fiber to either Ethernet or Coax, and that the Router is just a Router, and if it was bridged or bypassed, it would be a device without a function. For most Verizon FiOS customers their service would completely stop if the MI424WR was bridged, because the Video on Demand service is dependent on it to work.
If your ONT is connected to the Actiontec MI424WR router via Coax, the MI424WR is required due to the Coax connection. But if the ONT is connected to the MI424WR via Ethernet, then in most cases some other router can be substituted for the MI424WR, and it can be removed."
So it looks like I will be calling Verizon support to see about getting the Ethernet connection installed and getting another modem...

  • Have entrourage and want to use Mail. Can't get it to work.

I had a macbook and purchased the Microsoft office for Mac which included Entrourage.
I have now purchased a new macbook Pro and want to begin to use Mail rather than Entrourage.
I have Entrourage on my new computer but i can't get it to transfer my information to the the Mail program
I am on Charter.net at my office and sbcglobal.net at home.
How can i get this to work.  I can receive on Mail, but i can't send.

check your outgoing port settings and make sure it's using a specific port and not the default port, also you might want to check to see if it is using SSL, TLS or any other encryption.  Verify the setting from your old machine setup.
