Can't get Firefox to start after performing OS security updates

Just did the most recent updates on OS-X 10.6.8, and now I can't get Firefox to start. It comes up and says that it is having problems (the "embarassing" window) and that I should try closing tabs. However, it's not responding at all, so finally I have to resort to force quit. I've try cold starting the computer with no effect.

Let's try this. You said you are trying to start Firefox 8 on the problem machine? Can you try downloading Firefox 11 from [http://www.getfirefox.com www.getfirefox.com], install that, restart your computer, then see if it still acts up?
If it does, try running Firefox in [[Safe mode|Safe mode]].

  • Can't get firefox to start

Clic on firefox icon - get wait symbol - after a few seconds it goes away & firefox never loads

    eddyc,
I'm not totally confident I have removed everything I need to - is the taskbar at the bottom left hand side of screen?. I went into control panel-programs-uninstall a program and found "IMinent Toolbar" (3.37 MB) that was installed on May 15th. IMinent was the name of the browser I removed. I also saw another toolbar titled "Searchqu" (29MB) published by Bandoo Media with an install date of 5-18, which is the same date when all my problems begun. I notice now that when I launch internet explorer it goes to this address "http://searchnu.com/421". I have previously downloaded malwarebytes & I'm running it now.
I did find firefox running under the task manager-processes tab. I closed it, then tried to relaunch firefox with the same results - the cursor turns into a small rotating circle (wait) for 4-5 seconds, then goes back to a pointer & firefox never starts. No help.
I'm a little hesitant to delete firefox without actually backing up my profile, mostly because I'm concerned about loosing my bookmarks. Should I try to do that first?
Note: I went into control panel-programs-change start up programs & found a Bandoo Media data manager, filename DATAMN-1.exe. Installed 5-18-12. I can't help thinking that my problems are due to the accidental downloading of the Bandoo stuff & that it is hijacking firefox and who knows what else. Should I try to uninstall the Searchqu stuff before I remove/reload firefox?
Thanks for your time & patience,
    Joe
PS: Malwarebytes didn't find anything but it was out off date so I'm updating it & will run again.

  • I can't get Firefox to start at all. It won't even open so I can't reset it. Can you help?

Firefox has been my browser for the last 7 years and I have never had a problem with it. But over the weekend it crashed and now it just won't open. I've uninstalled and redownloaded it but it still won't open. I can't reset anything as I can't get into it. I'm not sure what recent updates or add ons I had.
I really want to continue using Firefox as it's a great browser but I need it to open. Please can you help?

You can use the Profile Manager to create a new profile.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

  • Hi, i updated to firefox 8. i cant even get firefox to start. it states a previous update needs to take effect and a reboot is needed. but nothing happens.

i updated to firefox 8. i now cant get firefox to operate at all.
it asks to reboot pc everytime i try to start or uninstall.
nothing happens after reboot as you try to start firefox again and it askes the same thing

See the [[Latest Firefox issues]] article. Try the first suggestion, to download the Firefox installer from mozilla.org/firefox and then reinstall Firefox (see [[Installing Firefox on Windows]] for detailed instructions).

Boinc is already running in the background as a service. There is no need to run "boinc" on the command line. The error you see is because it is trying to start Boinc again from the command line, but the service is already running and has claimed the port 31416.
I know, it was in order to give all the possible feedback.
I'm not sure why boincmgr won't connect... could you be more specific about what happens when you run it?
No, I can't be more specific than I've already been above. I've described all that I see that happens.
Other than that, the wiki tells you where to look at the log file (make sure there are no errors there) and explains the password for connecting (sounds like you already took care of that, but good to double check).
As you can see I've searched all the errors I got in the boinc wiki. I know what they mean, but not why are happening.
I think my problems come from a bad management of the files permissions by the package installation. I mean, when a package is installed there should be an script or something that modifies (or create the files with) the permissions that files must have, or create the groups that need to be created, and so on. But it looks like I have to modify all this data in order to get boincmngr connect to boinc, boinc and boincmngr get the writting permissions in the installation folder too, etc etc etc. I don't know very well how to do all this stuff (I mean that I've already created by hand the boinc group, changed the execution, access, modification of files with users and boinc groups credentials, and I still get silly errors as "boinc can't write" in a folder which is the owner, or can't write executed by the root. All this stuff messed me up because looks too much stupid), but more important, I shouldn't to do it manually after a package installation.
I should open a bug report in arhlinux first and if they can't solve the problem open it in the boinc support, I suppose.

  • Can't get OPP service started after OATM due to can't open file for reading

This is my second run on the OATM upgrade. OPP (and thus XML reports) came up fine after the 2nd run. After this run, had some issues with enqueing and solved them in an S/R with Oracle, but now I can't start OPP. I have tried all sorts of things, like aborting it in OATM, restarting, shutting down instance, running cmclean twice, resubmitting request, etc. Here is the error I get:
As System Administrator in forms, go to:
    Concurrent -> Manager -> Administer
-> pick Output Post Processor (from the many manager in the list)
-> by the way it says "Activating" under status, seems stuck there.
-> then hit the Processes button
-> it will show a long list of "Terminated" and default to the first
    one at the top.
-> Hit the "Manager Log" button
    -> you now get
    "APP-FND-01632: Cannot open file
    /sechi/applcsf/log/SECHI_orav880d/FNDOPP1380237.txt for reading
Cause: [Routine] encountered an error when attempting to open file
    sechi/applcsf/log/SECHI_orav880d/FNDOPP1380237.txt for reading
Action: Verify that the filename is correct, the environment variables
controlling that filename are correct, and the file exists.
Action: Verify that protections on that file permit reading by this
    program
    - but what is wierd is that the permissions on this dir are 777. I can see old OPP logs in that directory from before OATM. I can manually create a file with the name it complains about , then the app opens up the blank file with nothing in it. It seems that file is not getting created, not that it can't be opened.
If I need to change the log level of OPP please also tell me how to do that if it would provide some clues.
    THanks Marvin

One more thing I am going to try first....
I am going to change the service ID of the OPP manager. It keeps trying
to restart the dead process maybe that it is..

  • [SOLVED] Can't get PostgreSQL to start after following Wiki instruc...

I'm trying to start the postgresql service on my systemd installation. I've followed the instructions on the wiki. First I installed the package postgresql, then I uncommented the PGROOT line in the configuration file.
When I try to run systemctl start postgresql, I get the following:
    # systemctl start postgresql
Job for postgresql.service failed. See 'systemctl status postgresql.service' and 'journalctl -n' for details.
    # systemctl status postgresql

The files belonging to this database system will be owned by user "postgres".
This user must also own the server process.
The database cluster will be initialized with locale "en_US.UTF-8".
The default database encoding has accordingly been set to "UTF8".
The default text search configuration will be set to "english".

I also tried with the directory that was set in the configuration file, with similar results:

I don't know what to try next. I'm not sure what it needs me to do that it can't do itself. I've never worked with any kind of database system, I'm just installing PostgreSQL to start tinkering with it a bit for some pet projects.

Whelp, stupid me. Right after posting I managed to fix it myself. I'll post the solution and leave it here in case other people run into the same problem. The solution was to change the owner of the PGROOT directory and then running the initdb command again:
    # chown -R postgres:postgres /var/lib/postgres/
    # su - postgres -c "initdb --locale en_US.UTF-8 -D '/var/lib/postgres/data'"

  • Can't get CS4 to start after disk change

I've changed by boot disk on my macbook pro running osx 10.9 to an ssd.
Since then I can't start CS4 and it says licensing has stopped.
i have had this once before a few years back when I had a disk problem and had to restore from backup and I used the license recovery tool and managed to get it working. This time I have tried the tool and all the steps on the recovery doc and still doesn't work. Maybe connected with 10.9 of osx?
I have spoken to customer support and they say they don't give support for older products and suggested I go to the forums or buy the latest product version!
I have the serial number but I don't have the software cd any more. I didn't think I'd need it with backups etc.
I even looked to see if the old CS4 free trial was available but the link on the prodesigntools adobe site doesnt work either so I guess that's been removed.
Can anyone advise please because really stuck now?
I still have the old internal disk that I could boot from but if I do that is there then a way to do something to transfer to the new drive to get it to work on there etc?
    Thanks
    Mike

if you follow all 7 steps you can directly download a trial here:  http://prodesigntools.com/download-adobe-cs4-and-cs3-free-trials-here.html
and activate with your serial number.
if you have a problem downloading, you didn't follow all 7 steps, or your browser does not accept cookies.
the most common problem is caused by failing to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 (which adds a cookie to your system enabling you to download the correct version from adobe.com).
failure to obtain that cookie results in an error page being displayed after clicking a link on prodesigntools.com

  • Can't get Firefox to open after downloading

I've used firefox for years and love it. recently my kids downloaded several programs that had extra programs attached that infested my computer. After removing all kids of junk, I determined I needed to uninstall fire fox and reinstall. I did this, and when I reinstalled firefox, I cannot open the firefox program. origionally I got a error message, but now the computer just makes a noise and nothing happens. I uninstalled and reinstalled firefox several times.

Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set
to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your
updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow
    Firefox to connect to the Internet again;
    * Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version)
    * Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs, then add it back. For detailed instructions, see

Moving the /My Music/ folder will not prevent iTunes from opening. That only contains the iTunes library, not the application files. Moving that folder would only get you an empty library when you open iTunes.
    I suggest you reinstall iTunes.

I have been using Firefox for several years, and know how to set my Home Page by going to Tools/Options/General, and selecting the appropriate tab.
However, since the last update to 17.0.1, It now always starts as it was when I shut down, including multiple windows if I had them open. It is so irritating that I am considering changing my browser.

I hope you had a good Thanksgiving. I am attaching a zip file with the LabVIEW project, my build specification and my version of "Greatest Common Divisor.vi", which should be the same as the one that you have that ships with the LabVIEW C Generator, but just in case. I am also attaching a zip file with the C files generated by the LabVIEW C Generator.
You can also see the video I posted earlier with the steps I followed. I hope you are able to point out where I went wrong.
