Can't get firefox to start

Clic on firefox icon - get wait symbol - after a few seconds it goes away & firefox never loads

eddyc,
I'm not totally confident I have removed everything I need to - is the taskbar at the bottom left hand side of screen?. I went into control panel-programs-uninstall a program and found "IMinent Toolbar" (3.37 MB) that was installed on May 15th. IMinent was the name of the browser I removed. I also saw another toolbar titled "Searchqu" (29MB) published by Bandoo Media with an install date of 5-18, which is the same date when all my problems begun. I notice now that when I launch internet explorer it goes to this address "http://searchnu.com/421". I have previously downloaded malwarebytes & I'm running it now.
I did find firefox running under the task manager-processes tab. I closed it, then tried to relaunch firefox with the same results - the cursor turns into a small rotating circle (wait) for 4-5 seconds, then goes back to a pointer & firefox never starts. No help.
I'm a little hesitant to delete firefox without actually backing up my profile, mostly because I'm concerned about loosing my bookmarks. Should I try to do that first?
Note: I went into control panel-programs-change start up programs & found a Bandoo Media data manager, filename DATAMN-1.exe. Installed 5-18-12. I can't help thinking that my problems are due to the accidental downloading of the Bandoo stuff & that it is hijacking firefox and who knows what else. Should I try to uninstall the Searchqu stuff before I remove/reload firefox?
Thanks for your time & patience,
Joe
PS: Malwarebytes didn't find anything but it was out off date so I'm updating it & will run again.

• Can't get Firefox to start after performing OS security updates

Just did the most recent updates on OS-X 10.6.8, and now I can't get Firefox to start. It comes up and says that it is having problems (the "embarassing" window) and that I should try closing tabs. However, it's not responding at all, so finally I have to resort to force quit. I've try cold starting the computer with no effect.

Let's try this. You said you are trying to start Firefox 8 on the problem machine? Can you try downloading Firefox 11 from www.getfirefox.com, install that, restart your computer, then see if it still acts up?
If it does, try running Firefox in Safe mode.

• I can't get Firefox to start at all. It won't even open so I can't reset it. Can you help?

Firefox has been my browser for the last 7 years and I have never had a problem with it. But over the weekend it crashed and now it just won't open. I've uninstalled and redownloaded it but it still won't open. I can't reset anything as I can't get into it. I'm not sure what recent updates or add ons I had.
I really want to continue using Firefox as it's a great browser but I need it to open. Please can you help?

You can use the Profile Manager to create a new profile.
See "Creating a profile":
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem.

Thank you for your help Nattgew.
Boinc is already running in the background as a service. There is no need to run "boinc" on the command line. The error you see is because it is trying to start Boinc again from the command line, but the service is already running and has claimed the port 31416.
I know, it was in order to give all the possible feedback.
I'm not sure why boincmgr won't connect... could you be more specific about what happens when you run it?
No, I can't be more specific than I've already been above. I've described all that I see that happens.
Other than that, the wiki tells you where to look at the log file (make sure there are no errors there) and explains the password for connecting (sounds like you already took care of that, but good to double check).
As you can see I've searched all the errors I got in the boinc wiki. I know what they mean, but not why are happening.
I think my problems come from a bad management of the files permissions by the package installation. I mean, when a package is installed there should be an script or something that modifies (or create the files with) the permissions that files must have, or create the groups that need to be created, and so on. But it looks like I have to modify all this data in order to get boincmngr connect to boinc, boinc and boincmngr get the writting permissions in the installation folder too, etc etc etc. I don't know very well how to do all this stuff (I mean that I've already created by hand the boinc group, changed the execution, access, modification of files with users and boinc groups credentials, and I still get silly errors as "boinc can't write" in a folder which is the owner, or can't write executed by the root. All this stuff messed me up because looks too much stupid), but more important, I shouldn't to do it manually after a package installation.
I should open a bug report in arhlinux first and if they can't solve the problem open it in the boinc support, I suppose.

• I can't get Firefox to start with a blank page, which I always managed to do up till 17.0, buy now it always starts with the last page.

I have been using Firefox for several years, and know how to set my Home Page by going to Tools/Options/General, and selecting the appropriate tab.
However, since the last update to 17.0.1, It now always starts as it was when I shut down, including multiple windows if I had them open. It is so irritating that I am considering changing my browser.

Every time Firefox opened

Firefox can have multiple home pages if you wish. Each home page that will open when starting Firefox is separated by the "|" character.
See: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

I can't get Firefox to populate full screen. It's live on the task bar (because it will give me a mini preview when I move the mouse over it) but nothing I try, including uninstall and re-downloading, has worked.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

• Why wont google toolbar work with fire fox 5????? also how can i get firefox 4 back so i can use the toolbar???

Hello,my question is why wont google toolbar work with firefox 5?????
Also how can i get firefox 4 back so i can use the toolbar???

This page is an easier way to download Firefox 4.0: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-4.0&os=win&lang=en-US , as this links starts the download process asap.
I needed to upgrade to Firefox 4.0+ for an add-on that I really needed. However, I can't use Firefox 5.0, as I randomly checked 3 add-on's I had: "Firefox PDF", "Delicious Bookmarks" and "After the Deadline", and none of them worked with Firefox 5.0. In fact, I will have to download alpha versions, etc., to get these add-ons to work with Firefox 4.0.

You can disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.

On my Mac Pro how can I get voiceover to start reading at a specific point in a document, and then continue on to the next paragraph and so on?  Thank you.  Ed

Welcome to the Apple family!!!!
How can I cause the VO cursor(box) show-up/start?
Press Control-Option and F5.   The F5 key is located on the top row of keys 6th key over.  This is a toggling "Keyboard Shortcut" for turning VoiceOver on and off.
How can I move the VO cursor to various sentences or paragraphs of an article and have it start reading ... and perhaps even continue reading on to the next paragraph(s) ... even to the end of the article?
How to read a website with VoiceOver
Step 1:  Go to the Website
A quick keyboard shortcut is Command-L.  This will jump you up to the address bar.  Start typing where you want to go.  i.e "www.thewebsite.com"
Step 2:  Working with Webpage
VoiceOver will automatically start reading the website.  You can pause the speech by hitting the 'Control Button'.
If VoiceOver does not being reading the webpage, then you might have to "Interact" with it.  If VoiceOver say "HTML Content" then press Control-Option-Space-Down Arrow to interact with the webpage.
Use Control-Option-Right Arrow to move throught the website.  This will speak "EVERYTHING" on the page.
Most website that I've found have their articles labeled as 'Heading'.  You can jump from heading to heading, by pressing Control-Option-Shift-H.
If you'd like an itemized alphabetical listing of the site, press Control-Option-I
Press Control-Option-Space on the link or article you want to view.
Step 3.  Reading from Top to Bottom
Once you found and clicked on the the article/link, use the same 'Heading' command, Control-Option-Shift-H to find the title.
After finding the title, press Control-Option-A will start reading from the title on.
Note:  If there are any other items (ads, pictures, etc) it will read those too.
Tip:  You might be able to activate a feature called the 'Reader'.  The Reader isolates the article and elimanates the ads  The keyboard command is Shift-Command-R.  You can also find it in the Menu Bar (Command-Option-M) under the word 'View' then 'Show Reader'.
I am using a MACPro with OSX, probably Mavericks 10.9 (where would I look to see if that is the correct information?)
You can find this information under the 'Apple menu' in the Menu Bar.  To access the Menu Bar, press Control-Option-M.
Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac.  This will open up another window.  Use Control-Option-Right Arrow until you hear 'Version'.  If you purchased it brand new from Apple within the last six month, more than likely you have Mavericks.

The  'Commands Help' Voiceover Menu. Control-Option-H-H.  (hit H twice)  is my best friend.  It's a searchable VoiceOver Menu with most of the VoiceOver command.  Example:  You are looking for the 'Read Current Paragraph' keyboard command.   Press Control-Option-H-H and then type Paragraph.  It will then bring up all the commands with the word paragraph.  I believe there are three.
