Can't get h264 footage to import, only audio?

I'm brand new to Premiere. I have a simple project to edit and thought it would be perfect to get my hands dirty in CS6.
Unfortunately, I've already run into some problems.
• I can't import any h264 footage. I primarily shoot on a Canon 7d, and have a lot of 1920 x 1080 h264s. I was hoping to edit natively, as this is one of Premiere's selling points -- but when I import the footage, it shows it as an ".mov" file, yet no video plays, only audio. In fact, it won't even display a frame rate for the video -- rather than reading 23.976 like it should, it reads "48000 Hz". Why is it only reading the audio?
These files play normally in quicktime.
Any help?
Separate question, but regarding the same project.
This footage was shot in 24 fps, but just looked at final export requirements and I'll need it in 30 fps.
• Should I edit in 24 fps, and then try to somehow convert to 30? How?
• Should I edit in a 24 fps or a 30 fps sequence?
• What options do I have with 3:2 pulldown vs compression?
• Any recommendations of what point in the process i need to do a conversion or compression.
Again, I'm working in Cs6 on a Mac.
Let me know any other questions regarding specs.

Hi katevers34 - welcome to the forum!
I have found that giving those portrait pics a very minor edit in Photoshop has fixed the problem - any adjustment at all, perhaps a slight colour shift. Now you may not have Photoshop, but doing the same thing in iPhoto would most likely suffice as well. I'm sure that in iPhoto you could select all of those pics (Command-Click on each one) and in the Edit > Adjust window, make a minor change to them all in one action e.g. a tiny sharpness adjustment.
Post back if it doesn't work for you.

Are you able to scan with 5590 on a different application? Is it only Photoshop that is giving you this problem?

Where can I get the codec to import iMovie clips into Premiere CS6?

I am running a PC with Win7 & PPro CS6
I have a bunch of clips that were copied over from iMovie imports (no original files exist anymore)
They are all a special form of .mov
I can play them in VLC Media Player (but not Quicktime, or WMP) so I know that a pc can handle them...
When I import into CS6 I get an errorsaying Codec missing or unavailable...
Whered can I get the proper Codec?

Considering the last post was made in March last year, I've attached the feature request I made today, just so you know you're not alone on this issue, for anyone with the same problem.
MAC to PC Support:
There needs to be a comprehensive and readily supplied library of codecs to provide simple transitions between MAC and PC.
I'm currently working on my first feature film. I raised a little bit of money through Kickstarter, enough to buy a decent HD camera and a microphone. Basically, I'm not a professional and I'm learning as I go. The camera I bought is a Canon XHA1- it records to mini-DV. I do not have the money to buy an HDV tape deck, leaving me with the only other option of using the firewire port to capture footage off of the camera itself. I had a firewire-to-USB cable, which I used to capture footage to my PC, but after getting a new computer with Windows 8, the camera is now out of date and the OS has no drivers for it. I then decided to capture my footage on an old i-Mac my friend gave me, through i-Movie. After moving the files to my PC, I found that Premiere Pro CC was unable to import them.
Needless to say, the song and dance I have to go through every time I try to capture footage is frustrating, and considering the mission of Adobe Creative Cloud, to provide affordable opportunities and resources to independent artists, not to mention the fact that Adobe is for both Mac and PC (and especially not mentioning the fact that it is a service I am paying for monthly,) I feel like these kinds of problems shouldn't exist.
Of course saying "I pay for this, this problem shouldn't exist" is the rallying cry for every idiot who expects the impossible. But capturing on i-Movie... and importing to Premiere Pro? Really? Why is this an issue? Maybe i-Movie is out of date... but I'm not going to waste another weekend capturing; it probably still won't work.
I'm not asking for file conversion software. That's what I'm going to have to do on my own, for GBs upon GBs of footage just so I can get to the editing table. The problem is that I have to convert it in the first place. If there is any progress on this issue, please let me know.

How can I get Photoshop Elements to import photos that it wrongly indicates are wrong or in catalog?

Had 17,000 photos on harddrive before installing Photoshop Elements 11 today. Had them well organized in a number of folders under My Pictures. PS found and imported only 467 photos. I tried Search, Browse, and import Files; was able to highlight folders and individual photo files. When I clicked Get Media, it processed for 20 seconds and came back with message that "Files are not in correct format or are already in the catalog." In fact, they are in the correct format (jpg - able to easily view with other programs) and they are NOT visible in the catalog. I went into Control Panel and enabled the Watch service, listed all of the files that PS had not imported from, and still cannot show more than 467 of my photos. Very frustrating, any suggestions? Running Win 7 on 6-months old Sony that plays Blue-Ray, with 8 GB RAM and quad core Intel processors.

This forum is amazing - thanks to all who responded over the weekend. For future users, some replies I found helpful: 1. allow a lot of time for the cataloging process. I had not realized it would be such a slow and incremental process but a day later it is continuing to add to the catalog - am now up to a couple thousand in the catalog, 2. turning off Organize and Stack visually-similar, and the corrective functions during the initial process speeds things up, 3. go into Control Panel, Administrative, Services and activate the Photoshop Elements watch function as soon as you install Elements, 4. it was helpful to repair/optimize, and 5. if you realize it is really messed up, uninstalling Elements and re-installing may work better than lots of little tweaks and fixes. Now if I can just figure out how to get photos ordered by actual date taken rather than random future dates that my camera or previous version of Elements 8 apparently assigned....

Can't get MP4 Video to import

These are the specs on a video file on my computer recorded off of a JVC GY-HM 100U. I can't get it to import into FCPX, and it wont' import into Compressor.
What is apple's official stance on what to do with these files?
What is the easiest way to get this into FCPX? Is there any way of doing this without having to use a third party program? I find it insane that a professional editing system such as FCPX and Compressor would not be enough to handle a file as common as an MP4.
(ps i'm well aware that the JVC camera is capable of recording the file as a .MOV, but i wasn't the one who shot the footage).

I looked at FCPX's manual online and it states...
If you’re importing video clips from a still camera or other flash memory device, make sure the file format of your video is MPEG-2, MPEG-4, or AVCHD, all of which are compatible with Final Cut Pro.
...So it says MPEG-2 AND MPEG-4 are acceptable formats. So why is this still not working?

regardless, yes you can and the model year (2008?) or MacBook Pro X,Y (number)
www.macsales.com/memory is a good place to check what is available.
I thought 2GB was req'd and 4GB would be strongly recommended for 10.6 and above.

Which mouse and iMac do you have? Over the past 4 years or so there have been at least 3 mice that work on Intel based iMacs.
The first place to check is the mouse's preferences which are at System Preferences - Mouse.
If they are set correctly then do a SMC reset and see if that solves the issue:
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

After installing update I can't get a full screen. Only tabs under foxfire symbol on task bar.

I had to "un-install" Foxfire and reinstall the older version I was using. Every time I tried to install the update it messed up and I could never make it open to full screen. It just kept opening the tabs under the Foxfire symbol on the task bar. Has updating caused this for
others? I am using HP desktop with updated Windows 8. (hate windows 8) Everything works fine until I install the Foxfire update.

I have the same problem ......when I try to update foxfire it messes up and then I can not get anything but a little square under the foxfire logo on the taskbar...just will not open to full screen only blank except for the tiny square under logo of foxfire....so will just leave things the way they are as they work fine so guess it is ...I did go to HP and installed all update and also Windows

Satellite L650-PSK1JE - can't get 5.1 or sound - only stereo

I have Toshiba sattelite L650-PSK1JE with mobility radon 5650, and is connected via HDMI to my sony reciever
whitch is then via another HDMI connected to TV.
Problem is that I can't get 5.1 or quadrophonic sound from notebook, only stereo.
I have tried installing drivers from TOSHIBA web site, and also drivers from other sites (everi time deleteng old drivers) and still can't get it to work. Currently have ATI 12.6 drivers. and official conexant audio drivers .
In sound propertis it says that max number of chanels is 2. But in graphics card manual it is said that it suports up to 7.1 via HDMI.
Funny thing is that once (but only once) surround sound worked, and i had a choice to select 5.1.
Is there possibility that i need to do something with mi sony DH520 reciever.

Im not expert for this but, as far as I know in the past Toshiba has offered notebooks with optical sound port (red light inside the sound-out port) and it was possible to get 5.1 sound activating available 5.1 option in sound settings. Toshiba has offered it on Qosmio and some Satellite notebooks.
Out of curiosity: do you use original preinstalled OS that you got with your notebook?
I want to buy Pioneer VSX-S500 so this is very interesting for me to know if you will be able to get it work properly.

Force quit iCal. >Force Quit>iCal.
Then remove the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Drag the .plist file to your desktop.. Also go to your HD/Users/yourusernam/Library/Calendars Folder and remove any files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Log out/in, or restart and check iCal/Calendar for functionality.
To find the correct Library Folder for Preferences/Calendar, select Finder>Go and depress the Option key.

You need to find out what type of video it is. What your describing is what you get when a Video codec (software that allows you to "see" the video) is missing, damaged, or too old for the movie.
Once you identify what kind of movie it is, then you can update the codec.

Can Panasonic GH2 (AVCHD) footage be imported into FCE?

I have a panasonic gh2 dslr and i am having problems trying to log and transfer the clips i have on the camera to Final Cut Express. I realize that i need a converter of some kind to change the file type to AIC but i cant find any programs that can do it. Are there any free programs that can help? Also any general advice on this subject would be appreciated.

I am not sure if the GH2 records in some Panasonic variant of AVCHD that may need to be transcoded by 3rd party software but first:
Make sure your copy of FCE has been updated to 4.0.1
Open Log and Transfer, and click on the preference gear in the upper center of the window, choose Preferences:
Then set the AVCHD audio to Plain Stereo:
Also, you should verify your camera storage card only has one kind of video on it, Log and Transfer has been known to act erratically if the storage device has SD and HD video or Video and Still Images on it.
If all this gets you nowhere then you may want to look at Clipwrap:

which will allow you to transcode the footage to AIC. I believe they have a free trial offer.
If Clipwrap does not work, you may have a corrupted storage card.

How can I get around the -40 import error?

I'm using iMovie 3.03 and just found out that the -40 error I get when importing videos is due to a 9 minute (and 32 seconds) limit. My imports (1 mov and 1 avi) are just over 14 minutes each. Does anyone know of a work around for this problem? Or of any 3rd party software that will allow me to cut the import in half so I can bring each file into iMovie in 2 parts?

OK... I went to the site and downloaded the app. I ran it and it exported 9 mins of the file and then would not export the other half and gave me an error: NSReceiverEvaluationScriptError:4
Then I put the app on my desktop and changed the length of the file exported to 8 mins (using the instructions given with the download. When I ran it again, it said I needed Quicktime Pro to run it.
So... now what I don't want to do is buy Quicktime Pro and find out that it still won't work. Would Quicktime Pro be able to do split the videos? Or at least be able to cut half of the video off and save as another file name?
