Can't get into OSX! Need serious help here!

So I've seen some folks have had this problem but I haven't found a solution in any previous posts about this. Anyway, I have a bootcamped MBP. Everything has worked fine for the past 3 months but today I restarted my computer, booted to Windows, did some stuff there, restarted and booted to OSX. I got to the blue screen and the "Starting OSX" box popped up for a quick second and then dissappeared, leaving me with a pointer and a blank blue screen. I've tried everything I've seen in other posts about this. It does the same thing when I boot in safe mode as well. I booted up in verbose mode and it stops on the login app. I booted to the install disk and reselected the Mac HD to no avail. Windows still boots fine and it boots to disk fine, but refuses to start up OSX. Is there a way to reinstall OSX without losing my 3+ months of data that I've aquired? That would suck so bad to lose everything on my HD. ANY help would be appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Restart with the left Shift key held down and see if you can get to the login window; if you can't, perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X, which won't delete items you've added to the computer. If you can get to the login window, restart with the Command and S keys held down. Enter the following:
mount -uw /
cd /Users
mv username/ olddata/
exit
Replace username with the short name of your account in line 3, unless you've moved your home folder, in which case you will need to change the paths in lines 2 and 3; your computer should then start up and log in, but your account's data will have been reset to the defaults. To get your data back, open the Users folder on your hard disk followed by olddata, and then drag documents and other items outside of the Library/Preferences/ folder to your current home folder. One of the items in Library/Preferences/ was likely responsible for the issue.
If you are able to get to the login window but can't log in after moving your home folder, reset the NetInfo database and then move the entire home folder, including Library/Preferences/, to the current home folder.

  • Ran update this morning.  Now power button doesn't work and soft boot brings to the battery/cord icon as if there's no power.  Can't get into anything.  Any help on this?

    Update for Windows was run this morning---it actually made me run it twice.  I was initially able to use my phone but now I get nothing but the battery/power cord symbol.  The power button doesn't work at all.  I have tried soft boot of the down volume and power button.  Seems to reboot but same screen appears.  I cannot access anything on the phone.  Is there any help on this?

        Hey there, javadan! Thanks for letting us know about the problem with your software upgrade. I'm very sorry for the issues you're having. Based on the two attempts to process, I would have to say there was a problem with both install attempts. You may need to process a factory reset. Which model device do you have?

  • Have an old MBP. Just installed lion on it today. Previously, the computer had no password (at login, I would just hit enter so essentially the password was nothing). After installing Lion, that no longer works, and now I can't get into my computer. Help!

    Did i post this question in the right place to get an answer?

    Yes.
    Have a look at this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3189665
    It's not uncommon for some people to have a "blank" password, I did that for years. Apparently Lion has a problem with blank passwords.
    I hope the procedure in that thread works for you.

    Re: I downloaded iOS7 but my passcode was Greek letters on the Greek keyboard. When everything downloaded and iOS7 was ready to go, it asked for my passcode and the Greek keyboard isn't coming up. I've been locked out of my phone for hours. Any ideas?

    Do you have a backup?
    You could put your phone in DFU mode by holding both the sleep/wake and home buttons till your phone reboots and then releasing the sleep/wake button. It will prompt you to connect to iTunes and you can restore ios7 from there.
    Then restore all your settings and apps from the backup.

    it's this Ɵ.

    Same for me. This is a terrible bug that Apple should've thought about before releasing iOS7. I knew I couldn't have been the only one locked out because the Greek keyboard disappeared.

  • Please, need serious help here to send emails

    I cannot send any emails from my computer. I have a Ibook G4, and beside the inbox there is a warning symbol saying that the e-mail server can no longer use the 993 exit. Can anybody please help me? I have to sign in on my webmail to send off emails.
    Thank you.

    The thing is, it looks like this mail account isn’t working at all, not that you have sending problems. Has this account actually ever worked in Mail?
    Quit Mail, go to System Preferences > International and move English to the top of the list. Now, open Mail, then Window > Connection Doctor. What does it say?
    Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
    Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.

    You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.

  • Help, I am about to pull my hair out, can't get into a locked drive and Time Machine problem

    I've screwed everything up, I think.  I had Time Machine doing backups to an external 500Gig drive and somehow it got locked.  I went into Get Info to try and change the access but it won't allow me.  On top of this problem, my original drive died and I can't get into Time Machine to restore.  When I click "Enter Time Machine", nothing happens.  I created an eDisk and a startup disk to another external drive that I'm using now, but since everything that's been backed up is on the other drive that I can't access.  When I try accessing the drive it gives:  "The folder “G-DRIVE ” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."  I'm not knowledgeable enough to work from the command line, so if I need to do that to access the drive, please walk me though it.  As for the Time Machine problem, I have no idea how to recover anything since it won't even come up, it just sits there.  Outside of blowing my brains out, I don't know what to do.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can't afford to take it to Apple to let them try and fix it.

    Hello, not sure how this might affect a TM drive, or not, but...
    Here is what i needed to do for my drive "320GB HD", the last command is just for clean up
    Open Terminal and type these commands carefully with the spaces & change 320GB HD to the name of your drive.
    sudo chflags 0 "/volumes/320GB HD"
    sudo chown root "/volumes/320GB HD"
    sudo chmod 1775 "/volumes/320GB HD"
    sudo -k
    That said, these should be sufficient to do the job:
    sudo chflags 0 "/Volumes/320GB HD"
    sudo chmod a+rx "/Volumes/320GB HD"

  • IMovie has frozen up on me. I've tried rebooting and reinstalling the apps- no help. I can play some of the files- but I can't get into the libraries.Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a few minutes. What can I do?

    I desperately need your help. I was working on iMovie last night when the thing froze up on me. I've tried rebooting. I've tried reinstalling the apps. No change. I can play some of the files- although I can't tell which ones will play until they magically appear. I can't get into the project library or the event library. The bar that lets me scroll through the clips is gone. Even when I can get something to play the whole system crashes after a couple of minutes and generates a "problem report" that says "iMovie Quit Unexpectedly". This all started when I was adding cutaways- and one clip just would not load. After I tried several times everything froze up. Have you ever heard of something like this? Maybe I pushed a button or somehow changed a setting? Maybe some of the video is corrupt? What do you recommend?
    Thanks for any advice you can offer!

    I have tried all the above and nothing seems to work. Any other suggestions?

    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom
    I would recommend that you try rebooting while holding down the Command - R keys to get  into the Recovery Partition.  There, run Disk Repair and then run Repair Permissions twice.  A sizeable number of people have found that these steps solved the same problems that you are having.  If that doesn't completely resolve it the the next step is to reset the PRAM, by rebooting while holding down the Command-Option-P-R keys.  This may also be the problem solver you need.
    Hope this helps
  • Can I call someone - I can't get into email so how can you help me?
    Can you give me a phone number. My problem is I can't get into my email - so anything you send me is no help since I can't read it!
    please give me a phone number.
    If you do not have access to the rescue email or you do not receive the reset email then you will need to contact AppleCare for assistance:
