Can't get iPhone 3GS to sync

Just upgraded to OS 5 and now when I plug iPhone into computer my iTunes launches, but I can't sync my apps. Just says "starting sync" and won't move on.

have you tried resetting
hold sleep / home button until apple logo appears ignoring red slider and
allow to reboot

I bought a new iPhone 5 for my wife because her old 3GS was at its end. I made sure to back up the old phone on her old iMac running OSX 10.5. You can certainly move the backup files but that will do nothing for the apps or media that is on the device. Backups do not contain apps or media.
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
For the apps and media it will be necessary to move the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer. Creating a new user account on the new computer would be a good idea if you both use iTunes and want to keep your media seperate.

Can't get iPhone 3GS to recovery mode

I have an old iPhone that I haven't used for over a year. Naturally I couldn't remember the passcode. I tried all the versions of getting it to Recovery mode but none of those worked. When pressing the home and sleep buttons the slider never went off. Likewise when starting the phone, pressing the home while connecting the cable never got me to Recovery. Nor did the DFU mode instructions. Now I've ran out of attempts in unlocking the phone, it just tells me to connect the phone to iTunes. Well, surprise, it still won't connect. It gives me the "can not connect to iTunes. Cancel - Try again"-pop-up every time.
I'm wondering if that is because the iTunes is a much newer version than the phone? Or is my home button broken? Pressing the home button doesn't wake the phone up from sleep, should it. My iPhone 5 it does but I can't remember what the functionality was in 3GS.
Any suggestions? Should I try to find an older version of iTunes or what. I tried it with both a Macbook and a PC, same response on both.
Very grateful for any suggestions, my son really (I mean REALLY!) would like to get his hands on the phone...

Pressing the home button should wake up the display if the phone is powered on. It sounds to me like the home button is toast on your phone if it refuses to enter recovery mode.
You can bring it to an Apple store and they can confirm that for you if you'd like.

Can I get iphone 3gs if I just bought the 3G?

I bought the iphone 3G on May 21st and just found out the 3gs comes out on Fido June 19th. Since its been less than 30 days can I exchange the phone? I called Fido and the lady sounded like she didn't know what she was talking about. she said if its more than 15 days I can't exchange it. I'm going to call them back and speak to someone else. Just want to know if anyone knows anything about this?
It's not right for Apple to hide the release date of their new products. If they are going to do that, then they should let people who get screwed over exchange their phone for the new one. Especially since its been less than 30 days!

If you bought it at an Apple store (like I did), then you should reserve a new iPhone 3G S at buyiphone.apple.com and on June 19, go back to your Apple store with your month old phone, its packaging, accessories, and receipt and exchange it for your new iPhone 3G S. There will be a restocking fee of $20. I called my Apple store here in Michigan this morning and this is what they told me. But you have to act fast or the exchange cost goes up to about $600. The buyiphone.apple.com site is going through some maintenance for the next few hours, so you have to wait to determine your eligibility and reserve your phone.
I think Apple like AT&T is also offering a $100 refund if you want to keep your 3G, but I didn't pay much attention because I want the 3G S.

I can't get my 3GS to sync correctly.

I'm having a couple of error messages pop up when i'm in the middle of syncing my phone. The first is "The iPhone "xxxx" cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found." The next message says that there is an internal device error. I am not able to open any of my apps now, they all crash. I have deleted all my backups also. Someone please help, I'm in panic mode.

If you haven't already, try resetting the phone - press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.
Otherwise, you need to restore your phone in iTunes. Since you deleted all your backups (why?) there's no choice other than restoring as new. If that doesn't help, you have a hardware problem that needs warranty service or repair.
Note that if your phone was ever jailbroken, none of this may help.

You should be able to sync your 3GS to your computer and make a backup. Then connect your iPhone 4S and restore from a backup. This should effectively move all your data to your new device. Report back if you have any problems.

If you're trying to sync an iCloud calendar, go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Calendar on your iPhone and make sure you have selected your iCloud calendar as your default.

Check your Settings on both devices. Is iCloud's calender sync turned on (Settings > iCloud > Calendar)? Please make also sure that you are not only using local calendars.
