Can't get K8N Neo4 Platinum Edition to post with Dual Core 3800 Processor

I'm doing a sytem build with a K8N neo 4 Platinum board bought second hand off Ebay and can't get the board to post - when I power up all the fans etc come on but there is no beep and the "D" bracket lights stay on solid - 2 amber and 2 red. Having read numerous posts on this forum I've fiddled about with memory in different slots etc and pressed the reset CMOS button but to no avail.
The problem is (apart from the possibility I've been sold a "duff " board !) that I've no idea what version of BIOS is on the board and of course I can't get into the BIOS to see or update it. I understand a BIOS update may be required for the dual core processor - does this mean that if the board doesn't have the correct BIOS it won't recognize the CPU at all which is why I am getting these symptons? Alternatively could the problem lie elsewhere ? I do have another computer with an AMD single core CPU but at this stage don't really fancy taking out this CPU and trying it in the K8N board.
Any advice would be appreciated

-Take the motherboard out of case.
-Unplug all hardwares and power cords, then clear CMOS as the mannual has described.
- Plug one memory, VGA card and power cords, then start the system and check if it could boot.
-If it still couldn't boot, check the CPU support tableand make sure your board support this board. After this, I think you should take another single CPU to the board to check if it could boot. If it could, try flash bios to the latest one so that this board could support this CPU.

    Hey Guys,
I fail to see the Logic in "don't buy dual core now... it’s too expensive… wait till the price drops in 2006." You don't HAVE to buy dual core... but since it's here... there really is no reason not to. You still need a processor now to get you through till 2006... So that means spending $300 (CND + Tax) on a 3200+ and then in 2006... Spending another 400 (maybe even 500) on a 4400+... so in the end you'll still have spent close to $800.
By buy dual core now... you get to use it NOW!... so you also have to take that into consideration. I've already returned my San Diego 4000+ and waiting till June 12th for the 4400+ to get in stock. I don't think I’ve seen anyone in here using a dual core with the 1.4 BIOS, so I’m not sure if 1.4 will work at all... But everyone seems to be say that 1.5 will become official in early June... with dual core support and a VDIMM of up to 3.1v
    Just my $.02
Point well taken, but add this, what is going to change between now and then? I like to set back read reviews and watch them work out the bugs before I buy. All to often we get burned buying to quick in the Pc Market. And last point "use it NOW" may I ask on what? Now I just through that in so give me some links to read, because iam not uptodate on Dual core except the price.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum - won't post with cards in pci slots

    Hi
Just completed a new build - with 3800 + Dual processor -  everything works fine but when I plug a PCI card in any PCI slot the computer then refuses to even post.
I've tried different cards and all of the pci slots but it makes no difference. Could it be a driver problem ? When I remove the card and try again the computer then starts up as normal.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

1: PCI cards are bad, most likely your problem
2: PCI slots on MB are bad, highly doubt this

  • K8N Neo4 platinum edition v1 (bios W7125NMS V1.6 062305) -- after POST stucked

    hi i'm runningan athlon 3000+ in K8N Neo4 platinum edition v1 (bios W7125NMS V1.6 062305) and i have a very like problem:
today i tried to install freebsd(install started fine, nothing went wrong, i repartioned my hdd and the installer started),
for some reason i had to abort the installation process. since then i can not boot in from any device(cd,usb the hdd is in a
half way to bsd install state so it's not an option atm).
the post screen comes up and i can interact with it in a way(i can press tab and it drops me
to the detailed post screen,ctrl-alt-del also works i can restart with it), but i neither can enter to the BIOS setup /DEL/  nor the boot menu /F11/.
i've tried reseting bios settings by flushing cmos(removed the battery, pressed SW1. something must happened because the post now checks for sata devices
and the graphical screen/that one u can bypass by pressing TAB/ was not presented before).
it also detects my hdd and my cd-rom too. but still nothing happens after the POST.
others said updating my bios would help. but still there is no option to boot from.
if i am doing wrong something please let me know,
    thank you for your help
    Andrew

    the solution:
disable ide1/slave when the broken hdd is not connected and bios accessible; poweroff; reconnect the broken hdd to the PC;poweron; boot from a linux livecd; gpart/fdisk/something to repair the broken hdd;be happy life is nice
the trick was that bios and post is not messing with the broken hdd(while it was blocked in the bios)
so i could boot with a live cd when my hdd was connected to the PC.
since linux trixx out bios i was abel to interact with the post_killer_hdd (even it was blocked in the bios).
i hope somebody will be able to use it one day if something is not understandable drop me a PM.
problem solved im installing the os to the hdd, topic is SOLVED.
maybe the other guy who has some similar issues with his config/hdd could use this post too.

  • K8N NEO4 Platinum cold boot problem with 165 opteron?

I have this board and have a cold boot problem with my opteron. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Its starting to get very anooying.
    K8N NEO4 Platinum
    165 opty dual core
    2X1GB Ballistix PC4000
    160GB sata2
    7800GTX
    X-Fi platinum
    600 watt seasonic PSU

Well I am running them at the rated speed of 250 and the rated timings of 3-4-4-10 on the rated 2.8 volts. Ballistix have been known to die quickly when you throw to many volts at them for some reason. I dont get the cold boot problem with the OCZ. Once I finally get it to boot with the Ballistix it works just fine but the next morning I play hell to get it to boot again. I dont even get the main screen to let me get into bios. It just stays black. I have done all kinds of stress testing and ran memtest with no problems. I am really at a loss here.

  • K8N Neo4 (non SLI), does it have dual core support?

Hi, I've got a few questions:
     - Can I install an AMDX2 4200+ processor in my K8N Neo4 non-SLI motherboard (model MS-7125)?
     - If I can, do I have to update my BIOS?  I bought this board in March of 2005.
     - If I have to update my BIOS, how can I do it?  I don't have a floppy drive, and the Live Update thing doesn't seem to be working.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hmmmkay here...
Well, I tried to find the USB legacy support, but I looked in every menu and submenu and I couldn't find it.  Also, it turns out that I gave some misinformation--the USB options for boot are FDD, ZIP, and CD.  Not even support for a HDD!
So, I'm back to square one.
Can I flash from a floppy...?  I can probably get my hands on one if needed.
Or even better, is there a way to boot the flashing app from a CD?

in BIOS, ---> "Integrated Peripherals" ---> "USB KB/Storage Support" and  Enabled it. then "SAVE AND EXIT" , hit F11 or F8 during post, then choice USB-ZIP, or USB-HDD and boot from it.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum 7125 not posting after overclock testing okay

    Hi Guys,
I'm having a real stinker of a problem with my 7125 board.  I have all good components, but can't seem to get this bastard to post reliably when I'm overclocking.  I was thinking that it was my power supply so I bought a new Antec Neo3 650W supply and it doesn't matter.  I also got a new Opteron 165 processor and it still has problems.  I even RMA'd my board and then sent me a new one.  Here is my setup.
    7125 ver1
    Opty 165
    Crucial PC3200 Ballistix
    Nvidia PCIE Gforce 6200 video
    Antec Neo3 650W
    2x Seagate SATA 80gig (matched) 7200.9
RAID 0 via the SIL 3114
extra 160 gig HD (using the Nvidia SATA port)
Pioneer DVD 109 DVDRW - pri IDE
Sony DRU-820A DVDRW - sec IDE
    Hauppauge PVR150
3.5" card reader (connected via internal usb header)
    Lian Li case
When I run the system at stock speeds everything works fine, including the initial posts.
However, when I overclock, everything is erratic.  Sometimes, I can overclock the entire system to 290x3, 166, stable memory settings, and prime 95 orthos the  out of it for days on end (max CPU at 49C), but when I select restart in windows, it shuts down fine, but will subsequently not post. I have to hit the reset key several times, then it recovers itself and undoes the overclocks.
I have tried all sorts of memory timings from the crucial info - it recommends 2.8V and 2-2-2-8 timings.
I have heard that my memory is good for overclocking, but I'm now starting to wonder if it is the MSI Neo4 board or the Nvidia Nforce 4 ultra chipset.
Could it be the Raid 0 on the Sil 3114?  I haven't messed with this as I would rather have a RAID 0 setup, then a little overclock.
Is there a good NF4 ultra board out there that is better than this?
I can't imagine anything else to do except keep spending more money to eliminate more variables.
    Your thoughts?  Thx Nick

relax your CPU HTT freq. by 10-20Mhz and retest.
relax your memory timings e.g. from 2-2-2-8 to 2.5-3-3-8, to findout from where its comes then find optimal settings.

  • MSI k8n neo4 platinum hangs in post screen with saitek eclipse keyboard

I've had my board for almost a year now, with no problems, well almost.  I had a problem with Raid 0  but we won't go there now.  I just purchased a Saitek Eclipse illuminated keyboard to replace my old Microsoft Internet pro. The Microsoft board is PS2 and the Eclipse is USB.  I noticed that when I removed the Microsoft keyboard and plugged in the eclipse that when I rebooted, it took almost 4 minutes for the windows splash screen to start. With the PS2 board plugged in my boot time was less than 2 minutes.  I've looked at just about everything, and this includes Saitek support who are at a total loss on this problem to.  So I went to google and low and behold it lead me to here.  I've read a lot of post about keyboard problems, but they tended to be ps2 related. This is a USB issue. The old keyboard still gets my system up in no time flat. Can anybody shed some light on this issue cause it's driving me crazy!!!!  I still have my microsoft optical mouse hooked up until my Logitech G5 gets here, in a couple of days. I have not had any other isuues with USB connections, that includes a Nostromo game pad, printer , joystick and card reader.

Welll I'm screwed now. I tried all of the things you guys recommended, everything was cool. I decided to check my bios version through live update. I had 1.50 and live update had 1.90 ready to go, so I proceeded to flash the bios using the windows method. This included making a recovery disk.  Well it flashed ok, everything seemed to go well up to the point where it said to restart the system.   This is were it goes bad.  Upon reboot my screen was black, not even tinted slightly and my system never came back. I can't even get it to eat the recovery floppy. I have Corsair twinx memory with the fancy LEDS and they just stay on the first two lights.  I can't even get the  Cd drive to take the mobo disk.   It's late and I'm titally bumed, I knwo I won't get to sleep tonight....... I know I have to shitcan this mobo now and totally restart all over...............thanks for the replies on the lousy keyboard problem , at this point I wish I never even bought it.

  • (SOLVED) K8N SLI Platinum won't post with Saphire 5750

Hi everyone. Hope you all had a nice Xmas.
This is my first post on the forums.  I’m  from Portugal ,so I might write things that won’t make much sense to you but I´ll try to keep it simple.
I bought a Sapphire 5750 vapor-X for my kid's PC and I’m afraid I’m yet another one with the “black screen, no post” syndrome. I have tried the card on another system and it works fine.
    What I did:
    Remove old card (6800GT)
    Put new card in
    Reset  CMOS
Switch PC on… no image on screen.
The fan on the graphics card starts spinning, the blue lights are ON, but no dice. My HDD LED stays on, my CD+DVD drives LEDs keep flashing  but system  won’t  post, not  even show MSI logo.
If I remove new card and get my old one back in the PC, it will post first time.
I have spent Xmas reading forums and haven’t found anything but a lot of ppl with the same problem and no real solution for it.
Hope you guys can help .

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI Microphone performance

    Hi All,
1st post - sorry if this has been answered elsewhere...
I've got a K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI, the one with Creative Live 24 bit onboard sound. I just got it running a few days ago. The audio playback is fine - I can play games, watch DVDs, listen to CDs, etc. No problems there. I've got the Creative drivers from the CD in the motherboard box installed, BTW
The built-in microphone input is less than I expected. I have an old, cheap microphone which works fine (I tested it yesterday) with my (old) computer with built-in sound. On my new Neo4 the recording levels are _very_ low. I've gone in to the Creative Mixer and cranked up the recording volume, as well as toggled the "do not monitor" option (what does this do, BTW?), but it has not solved the problem. I have to speak very loudly with the microphone right by my mouth to hear anything at all.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

I had the same problem on my K8N Neo2 Platinum. I had a really weak microphone that I had to get right up to my mouth before it would start to work. I solved the problem by turning on the "mic boost" option in the control panel. Finding that option was tough. Here is what I had to do:
I had to go into the control panel, get into the sound and audio devices options, hit the audio tab; next to the sound recording section is a button for Volume. Hit that, and it brings up the windows mixer. Under options, make sure the Advanced Controls is checked. Then make sure the microphone input is there. If not, select options/properties and mash down the adjust volume for recording button. Then check down below and make sure microphone is checked. Then the microphone slider should be available. Make sure it is checked. And then hopefully you will see an advanced button. Hit that and check the mic boost. That finally solved my problem.
    Good luck.

Grimster i agree totaly with jeanguy, you need around 25-30amps min on these boards, so try a mates psu.
Do I really need more than 18a with my system? How much money (ballpark) in US dollars do you think a adequate PSU for my rig would cost???
I am really thinking of just takeing it back and getting it replaced with the same mobo and see if that works.
