Can't Get Legit IP Address From My Cable Modem

I have narrowed down my problem.
I cannot coax a legit IP address from my Charter cable modem. I'm using AirPort Admin Utility to no avail.
Everything else in the system works perfectly...I have no problem networking between computers, or tapping into a different wireless system.
The problem is getting an IP address that works. I have tried, one at a time, an AirPort Express, AirPort Snow and, finally, an AirPort Graphite. None could get the real IP happening.
Of course, Charter claims "software problem". Maybe it is, but I certainly don't trust them!

hi! Have you Physically powered off the Cable Modem and powered it back on? Connect your Cable Modem's network cable to the WAN port of your Airport. Unplug the power to both the Cable Modem and the Airport Base Station.
Plug the Power Chord into the Cable modem first, then the Power Chord to the Airport Base Station.
See if that helps,
AL

  • Why am I getting 2 IP addresses from the cable modem?

I recently renewed my IP address for my cable modem (by booting into Windows and doing the ipconfig thing). It did this successfully and assigned me a new static IP.
However back in OS X I am now getting two IP addresses depending on whether I connect by ethernet or Airport. When I connect my MacBook straight to the cable modem by ethernet it gives me the new IP address. However when I connect the Airport Extreme Base Station to the cable modem and do all the relevant restarting, it insists I still have the old IP address. This can't be right. Is it an errant preference hanging about in the Base Station? I have tried restoring it to default and setting up from scratch but it persists.
I know the difference between public and distributed addresses... the two I'm talking about are the public kind (e.g. 82.114.223.43 etc)

What do you mean by "old" and "new" IP addresses? What TYPE of IP addresses are you talking about? Specific numbers for example?
In general, the typical cable modem set up should work as follows: your ISP will assign an IP address to your cable modem. This IP address can be permanently fixed (static) or occasionally change (dynamic) - whether you get a static or dynamic IP address depends on your ISP. This IP address is considered your "public" IP address.
What you plug in directly after the cable modem will take on this IP address, since the cable modem merely passes on the IP address info (and serves no routing functions). So, if you plug in your MacBook directly to the modem, your MacBook will take on the IP address that your cable modem passes through, as assigned by your ISP; only your MacBook will have internet access.
On the other hand, if you plug in to the modem a router, such as Airport Extreme Base Station, the router will be assigned the "public" IP address received from the cable modem on its WAN (wide area network) side, i.e. the "side" that interfaces with the public Internet. When your router is set up to SHARE this one public IP address with multiple computers/clients, it has to create a private sub-network, otherwise known as the LAN (local area network). Whether you plug computers in via ethernet to the router, or connect wirelessly to the router (or even both!), your router will create IP addresses for each of its LAN clients so that it can identify everyone. As long as the client has a different hardware MAC address, the router will assign it an unique IP address. (That's why you had 2 IP addresses for your MacBook - one for the ethernet connection, and the other for the Airport connection - each network interface having a different MAC address, and thus receiving a different IP address from the router.)
Your router will always maintain its WAN IP address, as long as your ISP gives you that IP address (via your cable modem). However your MacBook, Windows and other clients may be assigned different LAN IP addresses depending on how you configured your router's DHCP server settings. The LAN clients in the context of your subnet would NOT be assigned the router's public WAN IP address when the router is set up to share that connection.
If you understand the whole WAN v. LAN IP addressing thing, but you're not getting the results you expect, try powering off EVERY single piece of equipment on your network. Wait several minutes so that everything is cleared from the equipments' memory. Then power on and wait until the equipment is in ready state, in this sequence: 1-cable modem..., 2-main router (AEBS)..., 3-remote bases/bridges (if any)..., 4-computers and other client devices.

  • Can't get an IP address from my Linksys WRT54G?

    Hi,
I've been using this router for a few years now without much problems but  now for the last few days I have been unable to access the Internet from my WiFi remote PC.
There is a strong signal reaching the PC but it can't get an IP address?
I've reconfigured the router a few times now and made sure the remote PC is configured right but I keep getting this result:
"Can not acquire an IP address."
Can anyone help me with this?  What is happening here and how to I fix it?  Thank you.

Delete the wireless profiles you have in windows then try to connect again. Do you get internet access when connected directly to the router?

  • Can't get any IP address from DHCP, but unattributed IP adress "already in use"

    Hello,
I have a mac mini with a manual IP address (192.168.1.121) which connects fine to the internet through ethernet.
When switching to DHCP instead of manual, no IP address is ever given to me (blank space after IP adress: in the network prefpane)
however, I immediately have an alert popup that says the address 192.168.1.150 is already in use.
I wonder where I could change this 192.168.1.150 address since I do not have this setting at all on this machine on any Network Port, not in Airport and not in ethernet. (I have no other network ports)
How can I change a setting that I didn't make in the first place?
The console reports the problem once every second also, and there is quite a general slowdown and beachball because of this.
I tried to renew DHCP lease but it stays blank too.
I also try to delete ethernet interface, and trash the Network configuration in the general Library, reboot, recreate it but the problem remains.
I also have reinstalled Snow Leopard and applied updates with no better luck.
Thank you very much everyone if you have a clue.

When you changed the setting to DHCP, did you click the Apply button? Also, you need to restart after changing from a manual IP address so the router can assign an unused address to the Mac when it detects it during startup.

  • Slingbox Pro can't get a DHCP address from my WRT310N router

Reset my Slingbox and on my router Dhcp table I see a dhcp address for 58 seconds but the slingbox network light keeps flashing. Then the address disappears and the slingbox network light continues to flash. Have tried changing the router, same issue.

You can try this link and follow the steps, i think it will help you in fixing your problem.
If possible connect a different Cat5 Cable from your Router to the Slingbox.

  • Pc with windows xl/sp3 can't connect / acquire ip address from airport extreme; meanwhile, my macbook in connecting fine.  We have a wpa2 personal password

My husband's Dell with Windows xl (sp3) can't get an ip address from our new airport extreme.  Nor can my daughter's Windows 7 computer.  There are no firewalls in place.  Both computers worked with my old Airport, though it was sssslllllllowwww.  My Macbook works fine and is super fast compared to the old airport.  We are using a wpa2 personal password.
Anyone out there have a cure for this problem so we can hook up those sad pcs?
    Thanks a lot.
    Elizabeth

First, make sure that the new Airport is configured exactly the same as the old one. Hopefully you saved the configuration settings in a file and can look at them to be sure.
If the Windows PC's can't connect with the same password, it's possible that the PC's were using an older wifi protocol like 802.11a or b.  The new Airport is backwards compatible but has to be setup that way check to see what versions of 802.11a the windows computers support and make sure that the wireless mode of the airport is setup to accomodate them.
Can the PC's get an IP address if they are connected to the AirPort using an ethernet cable? If they can, that would help naorrow things down to a wireless issue and not some other configuration problem.

Whenever I update my iPhone software, it asks me to sign in to iCloud with an old email address.  My other devices all have the correct address.  How can I get the correct address for my iPhone?  The only Apple ID that works for logging in is my new one.

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone (if you're using iOS 7), then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

Spent at least 40 min talking to apple support, to sort it out. luckly not at my cost. After trying lots of things and speaking to a higher grade support person I was given a temp password which did the trick. I then was able to reset that with my own password.
The impression i got was no one knowns  what the problem is and resetting the password at the apple end works. Not sure if you would be able to self fix.

  • Previous iPod Touch worked fine, new iPod Touch can't get an IP Address

I had a version 1.1.4 iPod Touch for several days and it worked quite well. I was able to automatically connect to wireless connections at work, at home and at my parents house without meddling with any wireless settings and by just using DHCP.
The other day I exchanged the iPod Touch for a different one, due to a defect in the case manufacturing, and with this iPod Touch, I haven't been able to connect to any of the previously mentioned wireless networks. I noticed that I wasn't able to get an IP address at all at my parents house, but I figured it was because I hadn't upgraded to 1.1.4, and was still at 1.1.3. I upgraded to 1.1.4 though this morning and at the work network, I'm having the same issue. I can easily connect to the wifi networks, but if I look at the DHCP settings, it's all blank. I can't get an IP address.
I looked around the forum here and found a great deal of people who for some reason couldn't connect to their particular wireless setup. This problem however is different in that I could easily connect to many wireless setups, but now that I've seemingly just switched to a different iPod Touch, I can't connect to the same ones at all.
It seems weird to me that the issue could just be that I got a different iPod, and I really think there must be some other reason, but I can't think of one. From all outward appearances they're the exact same. Same networks, same version.
What else could be the issue?

If your new Touch can't get on any network, then does it have a MAC address assigned to it? Go to Settings/General/About and scroll to the bottom to see if you have a "Wi-Fi Address", which is the MAC address assigned to your particular unit.
    See this article for reference:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306067
If you're able to get on some networks but not others (where you had no problem before) then perhaps there is a subtle difference in the new unit's performance. You can try restoring it to see if that helps, but that means erasing everything and starting over.

  • AVAYA IP Phones unable to get an IP address from DHCP server.

I installed new SRW208P switch and I mada an uplink connection with SRW 2024 switch (using GE port).
when I am trying to connect AVAYA IP Phone to the SRW208P port, the set trying to get an IP address from the DHCP server and failed to get it.
some times after 10 minutes, it get the IP address, but all the machines (PCs) connected to the same switch (SRW208P) hange.
Note: the PCs an IP Phones are connected with separate UTP cables to the access switch.
Is there any suggestions to solve this issue, please.
    Regards,

The issue is that your machine is not being assigned an IP address / was unable to reach the DHCP server to receive one. The 169.254.x.x IP your machine is showing isn't assigned from DHCP, it's assigned by the local machine and is referred to as an APIPA
    address.
So something is preventing your machine from reaching your DHCP server, which could one of a number of things. In the first instance I'd suggest having a look at
http://epan36.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/eventid-1001-dhcp-your-computer-was-not.html which lists several of things that could cause this error and things you can try in order to resolve it.
If none of those work, can you confirm whether you have any other machines connecting via the same method on the network, which might indicate whether this is an issue at the machine end or somewhere between the machine and DHCP server?

  • Cisco E1000 wont connect to internet anymore - not getting DHCP ip address from Comcast modem

    Very strange issue...
I have Comcast HSI and have been using my Cisco (Linksys) E1000 for about 3 years now. Bought it as a refurb.
My issue is that the E1000 is NOT receiving the DHCP info from my Comast modem.
The internet works when my laptop is directly attached to the modem; but when connecting the modem internet port
to the E1000 internet port it is NOT grabbing my ISP DHCP ip address thus no clients can broswe 'wired or wireless'.
I even updated the firmware and am starting to think its time to get a 'BRAND NEW' router as this makes NO SENSE!
I cannot release/renew as i have NO ip address to release.  I have even tried to configure the E1000 as a static
using the ipconfig/all from when the laptop and modem was connected. Comcast says they see nothing on their end.
I also factory defaulted the router and redid the config to no avail.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You need to enable MAC address clone on the router to recognize the connection from your cable modem. The link below would tell you how to configure the router to work with a cable connection and how to do MAC address clone.
