Can't get my eMac to boot from cd.

I have a eMac I bought from a teacher at college and he gave me the legit install discs for it. OS 10.4.11 is on the emac but I am wanting to reinstall the OS from the discs to have a clean copy on it. So I have followed instructions and put the disc 1 in the drive tray and restart the mac holding down the c key.But when it comes back on it just go straight to the log in screen. I do know he put new ram, hard drive, wireless card, and cd/dvd drive in it. Also what it does when it has the OS disk in it, the cd spins and spins and after awhile it ejects. So what I am trying to say is I put the cd in and hold down the c key but it ends up ejecting the cd. Is there anyway I can get it to run from the disc. Also if I have nothing in the tray and hold down the c key nothing still happens can someone please tell me what I need to do to fix this problem?

Hey Brandon,
First try booting and hold the option key down. See if the eMac can even see the installer CD.
If not,
.. eMac I bought from a teacher at college..restart the mac holding down the c key..it comes back on it just go straight to the log in screen...spins and after awhile it ejects.
Since it came from a college there could be something installed that would prevent booting from a CD. It could also be in FirmWare which would be more problematic.
My first try would be to boot the eMac into target mode and hook it to another Mac:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
From there erase the HD and try again.

  • How can i get my Powerpc to boot from a PCIe drive

Hi, I just upgraded my PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5 with 16GB of ram & two 1.8 tyrabite drives. My problem is, I also installed a Velocity solo x2 PCIe card
for a solid state drive. the system recogizes the drive but I'm having a problem with getting my system to boot from that PCIe card drive. Please if anyone
can help me I greatly appreciate it.

If you cannot get the ssd to boot, you can move folders to the ssd.
Unix command ln  -- The Unix make link command. I have a copy of virtual PC.  It insists on using a folder in my documents folder for saving all of the virtual machine information.  This folder is rather large.  I used the terminal command ln to move the folder to my external hard drive.  Virtual PC had no problem with this move.  I do not think that Mac applications notice the ln redirects.
You can use the Unix command ln to redirect a reference to folder on your small partition to a folder on  your larger partition. You need to be careful when you pick the folder. You best avoid any system folder, those folders needed at startup. You could pick some user data folder.   Home folders, that is folders in /Users, are a good choice.  Please try this when you have a full backup.
mac harddrive > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    man ln
    ln -s target source
    example:
let's make like my Christmas card folder is on my desktop and make like the names is cards.
    mac $ ls /Volumes
    GREEN/          Macintosh-HD@
    mac $ ls /Volumes/GREEN/Christmas\ Cards/

Please verify that the programs (Ubuntu, Mint, Boot-Repair, etc.) you are attempting to use, support the Atheros AR8161L gigabit ethernet controller natively. Not all operating systems and software programs support every network device and/or configuration otut of the box. Many times, specific drivers must be loaded or injected into the OS for a device to function properly.

  • Can't get my Imac to boot from external HD

Hello everybody out there in the community,
while preparing my system to update to Lion, I noticed, that my Imac appears not to boot from an external HD, when selected. When I press option-key and select the clone HD, I nevertheless hear the booting from the internal HD. Tried with firewire and with USB connection to no avail. Both ext. HD's are formatted MAC OS extended (journaled), with a GUID partition.
Any tips, hints or ideas will be appreciated!
    Thank you!
(Specs: 3,6 GHz Intel Core i5)

Selected the clone from Preferences > Startup, did a reboot and it still appears that the booting is from the internal HD. I mean it appears like  90% of the booting sound comes from the internal HD, there is only a bit of light flicker (LED) at the beginning and the end of the booting process on the external HD. The clone is named 'clone'.
I did booting from an external HD on my old G5 imac a good few times, it took a while longer and I coud hear and see the booting (LED) from external HD, so I have kind of a 'feeling' how it should be like.
The external HD starts up no problem. It appears on the desktop, I can select it under Preferences > Startup and it shows up during startup using option-key.
Having done the booting, selecting the external HD, I can dismount it and still can open programms and documents, so it ought to be the internal HD ?

  • Can't get my Imac to boot from CD rom

Sorry for posting the same thread. I made a mistake on the last threads title but I marked the last one as answered. Anyways,I'am trying to use the Mac install CD version of disk utility to repair parts of the disk that can't be repaired by the one on the operating system. I tried holding option key. Whenever I click CD rom, it still boots from the hard drive. I also tried using system preferences to boot boot from CD rom, holding c at startup, and holding cmd option shift delete at startup and it still boots from the hard drive. Why is the computer doing this?

  • Where can I get an eMac install DVD from?

I've just been given an eMac that was destined for the skip. It came with no install DVD's and the administrator password is unknown. Whoever cleaned it out before parting company with it put in an administrators name as "apple" but didn't clear the password which is asked for in order to make changes & take over the computer. I wanted it as a spare & to play old games on that I can't bear to part with since getting my MacBook Pro intel i5 laptop (now updated with OS 10.7 Lion on it.)  I've done a bit of research to  try to find how to 'hack' into the system and change the administrator password but it seems I need the install disk to do a clean install again. As this eMac is running Mac OS 10.4 I should be able to wirelessly connect it to my established system once I gain control of it & use it as storage/back up etc.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions of either where I can get a disk from or how to change the root password.  Is there anyone out there who can help? I'm not a very techy pro though have had macs for many years so know my way around one fairly well.  Thanks

It will be difficult to find the original Install/Restore disc, and then it may have an OS lower than Tiger 10.4
Here's severtal methods to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2003/06/16.1.shtml
Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!

Hi... I need to run ANOTHER Factory Reset on my HP dm4 6055 dx Notebook. I have gone in before Windows starts and changed the boot order and by pressing F9 before Windows starts. My disc drive make's all these noises I am pretty sure it shouldnt be making. All my latest problems started because I wanted to burn a cd. When I would try and burn a cd I kept getting this message that said the disc I was using is the incorrect write speed and is incompatable with this computer. I AM using a disc that is the right write speed for my computer. The othe thing that happens is as soon as I would click Burn (Not Responding) appears in the top left corner and the program has to be closed, All I can do is get to a sertain part in most of my programs then they have to be cloed and I start over witch has become very frustraiting. I have an Unknown Account ( S-1-15-2-1) in almost all of my programs properties. I am the only user account on my computer. I cannot open Windows System Restore I get a message that says there was a Volume Shodow Copy Error, I'm not sure what that means. I cannot open any Recovery or Restore options. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask. I want to smash my computer it has been nothing but problems sense I got it 2 years ago...

    Thank you for the response!

  • How can you get a imac to boot from install disc(external drive)

It tries for a while then says you have inserted a disc mas osx does not recognize.

    sirmark1:
Thanks for the clarification. It helps to get a better grasp of the situation.
If you have not already done so, try this:
    • With computer shut off insert disk in external optical drive.
    • Start up computer and immediately after chime hold down Option key.
    • If CD shows up select it and click the straight arrow.
However, the version of Mail you get from Jaguar will be the earliest version of Mail, whereas the version of Mail in Panther is 1.3.1. You can download 10.3.9 Combo Update and either install the update, or try to extract Mail from the Combo update using Pacifist
Hope one of those work for you.

  • HELP I can't get macbook air to boot!!

Help!! I am traveling around the world right now and I can't get my MBA to boot up.  I shut it down by selecting shut down, after closing all windows.  A few hours later went to turn it on and nothing!  I am so frustrated! When I press the start button I get the chime, but the screen doesn't light up.   I can feel something whirring, and the logo on the back lights up but that is it.  I have tried repeatedly starting it and turning it off, nothing. Have tried holding the alt button and the start button at the same time, nothing.
I am getting on a plane in the morning and going to Nicaragua so I can't call Apple nor can I go to a service center.  Right now it is 7:45 PM in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and the computer service centers are closed.
I purchased the MBA in January of 2014 so it is less than 1 year old.  I purchased extended warranty recently.  I have the latest OS system installed, I have no USB sticks to start from.  All I have is the MBA.  Slapping it doesn't help Neither does yelling at it .  Any suggestions as to what I can do? This is the first time this has happened. I haven't dropped the computer.
    Thanks so much!

The easiest thing to do is to reset the SMC:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If you have failed to bakup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases

I wiped my ipod classic and then my computer crashed, so i no longer have the songs i purchsed from itunes on my ipod or computer! I have a new computer now with itunes installed, can I get the songs purchased previously from itunes somehow?

    Yes, you can!(:
    STEP 1: Open iTunes
STEP 2: Navigate to the "iTunes Store". It can be found under the "STORE" tab.
STEP 3: On the right side of the store there should be a "Quick Links" Section. Click on the "Purchased" link.
STEP 4: Navigate to the "Music" tab and click on "All Songs". Then at the bottom of the screen there will be a button that says "Download All". Click the button and your songs will be begin downloading!
NOTE: This will only work with songs that you bought from the iTunes store, if you imported them from a CD, you will have to do it again.
NOTE: You can also do this with Apps, Movies, TV Shows, and Books.
NOTE: You may have to sign in with your Apple ID to verify the download.
Hope this helped! Enjoy your music!(:
