Can't get my Imac to startup from the hard drive...

I'm trying to update an old tray loaded Imac G3. I've put a new hard drive and new ram in the machine. I initiallized the disk and installed OS 9.2 from an official Apple CD. I selected my main drive as my startup disk but when I restart, it gives me the old face on the blinking folder. I ran disk utility to see if the disk was damaged and everything came out fine. I wiped the disk clean and reinstalled but still the same problem. Any guesses... I'm stumped. One other thing, when I'm booted from the OS 9 CD, is it normal for me to get errors that says the startup disk is locked?
Imac G3   Mac OS 9.2.x   Tray loaded CD ROM

Hi, braddo -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
One other thing, when I'm booted from the OS 9 CD, is it normal for me to get errors that says the startup disk is locked?
Yes.
When you boot to a CD, the CD is the startup disk. Since a CD like that can not be written to (which is one of its advantages), it is, in effect, a locked disk. Hence the message.
An old tray loader iMac is probably an original Bondi 233MHz machine, or a later 5-Flavors 266MHz or 333MHz model. Those models are subject to the 8GB restriction as described in this Apple KBase article -
Article #25249 - Gray or White Screen After Hard Drive Upgrade
If the new hard drive is 8GB or larger, it will need to be partitioned such that the first partition is a bit less than 8GB (7.7GB is a safe size), and all OS's installed on that partition.
The installer on all OS 9 Install CDs will not check for compliance with that requirement (the installers on OSX install CDs will check for it).

  • Can't get my Imac to boot from CD rom

Sorry for posting the same thread. I made a mistake on the last threads title but I marked the last one as answered. Anyways,I'am trying to use the Mac install CD version of disk utility to repair parts of the disk that can't be repaired by the one on the operating system. I tried holding option key. Whenever I click CD rom, it still boots from the hard drive. I also tried using system preferences to boot boot from CD rom, holding c at startup, and holding cmd option shift delete at startup and it still boots from the hard drive. Why is the computer doing this?

Selected the clone from Preferences > Startup, did a reboot and it still appears that the booting is from the internal HD. I mean it appears like  90% of the booting sound comes from the internal HD, there is only a bit of light flicker (LED) at the beginning and the end of the booting process on the external HD. The clone is named 'clone'.
I did booting from an external HD on my old G5 imac a good few times, it took a while longer and I coud hear and see the booting (LED) from external HD, so I have kind of a 'feeling' how it should be like.
The external HD starts up no problem. It appears on the desktop, I can select it under Preferences > Startup and it shows up during startup using option-key.
Having done the booting, selecting the external HD, I can dismount it and still can open programms and documents, so it ought to be the internal HD ?

My iPhone is stolen. How can I get my address book back from the iCloud? I should have synchronized my iPad address book. However, I loss some recent contacts from iPhone.

I use my iPad to get the address book backed up by iCloud from my iPhone. However, I cannot see the recent new contacts from my iPad. Is there anyway to check the iCloud server to see if my address book backup from my iPhone is still there?

I accidently deleated a file from the Elements organizor and from the hard drive. Can I get it back? How to do it?

There's a good chance that you can if you haven't done too much work after deleting it.  Typically files are not actually wiped from the hard drive, rather the space they take is marked as free to use by another file if needed.  So if it hasn't been used by another file it can be recovered.
Try this program...  it will help if you know where the images were stored.

I copied all my CD's onto a hard drive.  Can I transfer each CD from the hard drive to my iPhone either wirelessly or by direct connection?  Do I have to make a playlist for each cd and then transfer it to my iPhone?

When you buy your new iMac you will be able to have the installation process transfer all your applications, data (including music, pictures, documents, etc) and settings to your new computer. In the past that was done via Firewire. I'm not entirely sure of the process with the new iMacs that don't have firewire. I think it can be done via ethernet and probably via tha thunderbolt cord using a firewire adapter but you'll want to check that out.
With the your new computer properly connected to your old computer, the initial booting of the new computer will include the ability to move everything over.
If for some reason you don't want to do that (smart if you have some horrible software issue that is causing problems) you can connect your old computer to the new one and start it in Target Disk mode where it will be seen as a hard drive. You can then manually copy over all your music and import that into iTunes (and any other data you want).
Somebody here will surely point you to directions for connecting an older iMac with no Thunderbolt to a newer iMac with no Firewire.

    Hi,
The simplest solution would to restore from your back up - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4112
If you do not have a back, you can select first track on list in song view, from menu > edit > select all. Next ctrl+click and select download from pop up. You may wish to do this in small batches as it will take some time to download.

There is another option if the Macbook will start up in Target Disk Mode.
Restart the computer while holding down the T key. If you see the firewire symbol moving around on the screen you can connect this one to another one in TDM. You will need a suitable cable to connect the two Macs.

  • HT1923 hi, my mac air is really low on disk space, can i remove iTunes (which is huge) to an external hard drive to free up space and then just run it from the hard drive. instead of taking space on the mac? even if the mac no longer has enough to accommo

Hi, my mac air is really low on disk space, can I remove itunes (which is huge) to an external hard drive to free up space?...and then run it from the hard drive instead of the mac, even if the mac no longer has space to accomodate the size of the library?

    Yes.
Copy your music iTunes Library folder to the external drive and change the Advanced settings in iTunes to point to this new location.
Once you're happy with these changes you can delete the same Library from your User account to free up space on the internal drive.

  • How can I get my data off my MacBook Pro hard drive?

So initially, water was spilled on my MacBook Pro keyboard. I promptly shut it down, turned it upside down, mopped up the water and let it dry out for a day near a heater. The next day it worked fine and continued to do so for about 2 more days until it decided it would no longer start up. Right now it can't make it to the login screen at start up, it just shuts down, the same thing happens in safe mode as well. So, since I haven't backed up my data recently, I was wondering if there was a way I could rescue my data from the hard drive. I did take it in to the Genius Bar, but they couldn't help me since it wouldn't start up in safe mode. Is there a way around this like hooking up an alternate monitor or am I just screwed?
