Can't get my portable hard drive to conect with FCP! What should I do?

Every time I try to reset my scratch disk to have my media go to my portable hard drive the message "Unable to set scratch disk. Selected directory is on a write protected or non-writable media." How do I change/fix this so my media can be sent to my portable hard drive?

Hi - Try this.
In the finder, click on the external drive icon.
Go to the Menu:: File > Get Info
A window will open.
At the bottom of that window, click on the triangle next to "Sharing and Permissions" to open the pane.
Click on the lock at the bottom corner of the pane and enter your password so that you can change the permissions for the drive.
Change the permissions. Re-lock the pane.
Close the window.
Restart your computer.
You should be good to go.
Hope this helos.

  • Can I use a portable hard drive for ipad data storage?

Can I use a portable hard drive for ipad data storage?  I want an iPad mini, but don't want to get a large one (memorywise) along with cellular capability.  I remember that the old iPads coiuld not communicate via their iPhone connector to transfer data.  So can I do that iwth the newest iPad mini via the lightning connector somehow?  Thanks, Tom

No. But you can with Seagate's wireless GoDrive.

Unfortunately, that drive is long gone, probably back to the mfr. Drives are not returned when they are exchanged. You can go by and ask them, but the chances are slim to none.

  • I have an iMac 21.5 inch purchased in 2011 with a failing 1TB Seagate hard drive. Can I get a replacement hard drive?

I have an iMac 21.5 inch purchased in 2011 with a failing 1TB Seagate hard drive. Can I get a replacement hard drive thru the Apple Replacement Program? I did purchase the Applecare Plan but it expired in Dec. 2013.

FWIW, if you purchased the iMac in 2011 and purchased Applecare, you are covered for a total of 3 years. You mentioned yours expired in December 2013 - that cannot be unless you bought yours in 2010. If you bought it in December 2011, you should still be covered until December 2014 - if so, contact Apple/make a Genius Bar appointment quickly so the replacement is covered by the warranty. The hard drive replacement program might have expired, but as long as you're covered by Applecare, a drive replacement is covered.

  • Can i get a bigger Hard drive in my Macbook? :)

Hey everybody, a few questions for your guys. Thanks
Can i get a larger hard drive in my macbook
    whats the largest size
    Does it void the warranty
were can you buy them from
    and is it easy install
    Thanks guys

    Here is a Do-it-yourself guide.
You also might consider maxing out your RAM since you plan on opening up the machine anyway. (Depends on which model you have, the older CoreDuo can use 2GB max, later Core2Duo models can use either 3GB or 4GB, depending on model.)
Other World Computing can help you find the parts that are compatible with your particular computer model, and they may offer a small rebate for your original RAM/drive.

how can i get an internal hard drive cable replacement?

    I believe iFixit sells them:
    http://www.ifixit.com/
You can also go to an Apple store, they won't sell you the part, but they will replace it for a fee.

  • How can I reformat my portable hard drive?

I have a Seagate 1TB portable hard drive, connected by USB to my MacBook Pro.
I use it as my Time Machine.
I have been getting error messages saying the drive is not working.
I have tried to repair it via Disk Utility but get this message:
Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
    1. How can I repair it and protect the files I have on it?
    2. Alternatively, how can I wipe it and start again as a new Time Machine?
    Thank you

In Disk Utility select that external drive then click the Partition tab. Then select One partition from the Partition Layout drop down and make sure it is set to a GUID partition table, that is under the Options button, and the format is set to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Then Click the Apply Button. If the drive is still good it will be partitions and formatted and then can be used for a TM backup drive.
But I suspect either the drive is failing or the electronics in the drive enclosure are failing. In the first case there isn't much you can do about a failing hard drive except replace it. On the second part if the enclosure electronics are failing then you can take the physical hard drive out that enclosure and connect it to your mac with a SATA to USB adapter or put it in another enclosure.
Then you have the simple fact the Apple Mac notebook computers always seem to have a problem with these USB Bus powered external hard drives. It seems the USB port on Mac notebook don't put out enough power on the USB port to fully power up these type of drives. They do some times but not always. One work around for that is to use a Y USB cable that connect to 2 USB ports at the same time to supply more power to the drive.

  • How can I connect a portable hard drive?

I use a number of portable hard drives with my MacBook Pro, mostly Seagate.
The one I use for my TIme Machine back up has stopped working - when I connect it to my Mac, nothing happens (e.g. no sign of the drive within Finder).
I have rebooted the Mac, taken the cable out of the drive and reinserted it, etc but still no luck.
Other portable hard drives seem to work so it would appear this one might be faulty, although the two lights show on the drive when it's inserted.
Are there any workarounds to try and get the drive to mount?
    Thank you

I have tried a different USB port on the MacBook Pro and it doesn't show up in Finder on that one either.
However, it does appear listed in the Disk Utitlity.  It states: The partition map appears to be OK
What should I do next - do I select "Repair Disk"?
    Thanks.

  • Can I connect a portable hard drive to an ipad 4 to play music?

I am buying an ipad 4 for my wife as a present. At the moment we both use PCs as well as iphones to play music which we store on a portable hard drive which can then be moved between our PCs (we have different music tastes so have different itunes libraries!). Is there a way of directly connecting up the hard drive to an ipad 4? It's a portable seagate with a usb cable - the connection at the hard drive end is something I don't recognise! It draws power from the PC.
    Thanks for any ideas.

Not unless you purchase a special Wi-Fi external drive that will work with an iPad. Seagate and Western Digital make such products.

what do i do if i want to use a portable hard drive for backing up, if i also see

Do you mean you're already backing-up to a Time Capsule, and want to switch to using an external HD?  If so, just format the drive and select it via Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.  See #21 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
If you mean something else, please clarify.

  • Where can I get a new hard drive for an LC II (80MB)

I have a complete Macintosh LC II that saw most of the family through University (and me retraining as a dentist). The hard drive is an IBM HDD 80MB 3.5" WDS-L80 - does anyone know anyone still selling these/ can I use a substitute. Would like to keep the Mac as a feature in my office/study.

Wow, i just went to buy.com and their homepage is so messy i couldn't even find the computer stuff.
So out of curiosity, i checked eBay and 80GB SCSI hard drives are grossly overpriced. $50 is a lot even if it's new, which most are not. You might make an offer on one that's "buy it now or best offer".
But here are two possibly better sources:
    1. Check craigslist in your area for old used Macs. I suspect you can put in a SCSI hard drive up to at least 512 MB in size. (or do you want the "stock" hardware config..? )
    2. You could check state surplus in your area for old used Macs, but they're likely recycling anything that old if it comes in. You might talk to their computer person and ask if he'll save any "vintage" Macs for you if any come in.
I have an LC 475 someplace. Pretty cool little computer.  I might actually have an extra SCSI HD around too that i could part with.

  • Why is my Seagate portable hard drive not connecting with my LG TV?

Can someone please help me figure out my problem. I recently purchased a Seagate Expansion Portable Hard Drive 2T, 3.0 USB compatible. As I own a MacBook Pro, I formatted it to fit my Mac instead of windows. I have finished downloading all my movies on to it and have connected it into my LG TV usb port but nothing happened. The little green light was on my hard drive indicating it was on and not a broken drive and the TV came up with a prompt saying 'USB Loading.." than immediately after it came up with "Problem on the USB Device. Please check USB". Yes I know the problem is that its formatted to Mac and there for the TV cannot read it. But I don't want to format it to windows for my MacBook doesn't read/write it, (If anyone can help me change that, that would be great!), (as I have another hard drive and it doesn't let me drag movies onto or out of it and only lets me see them,) and the hard drive will be rather useless, Plus I'm using Time Machine and I want to keep a BACK UP of my Mac on a partition of my hard drive (Which I have already done).
    Please & Thank You,
    Jaycee

    Templeton Peck:
Well yes I know the problem to why it won't connect to my TV (the hard drive is Mac formatted) but I'm hoping someone would have a SOLUTION to the fact that I want it to stay in Mac format AND also somehow work with my tv (If thats even possible?..probably not) OR I can maybe change the format back AND hopefully can get it compatible with my Mac (Can that even be done too? Maybe download some prgram?) so I can still copy/past stuff off of it ---> Which by the way, I'm hopping also someone might have that solution too (Which I stated mildly up the top).
Also, I posted this up for the reason of which I would expect the people who read these know a little something about Mac/Apple Products (not necessarily about Mac formating but anything else really), So this question is technically about my MacBook for which my hard drive is MAC FORMATTED and that maybe theres a way for my MacBook to copy/past from my old hard drive which ISN'T Mac formatted (In saying that, I can just reformat my new one back IF there is a way for me to still copy/paste stuff off of it onto my MacBook).
So yea, I think this does has something to do with my Mac.

  • Bluescreen when connecting usb iomega ego portable hard drive to T61 with XP pro SP#

Hi, connecting a new iomega ego portable hard drive to T61 XP pro causes it to bluescreen.  Get the message "...windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer".  The drive works on other PCs.  Does anyone have an idea what causes this and what a remedy could be.  Thanks in advance for your help.  Deb

    Hello,
How does the Iomega eGo portable hard disk drive connect to the ThinkPad T61?
If you plug this portable hard disk drive in before you turn the ThinkPad on, does the problem still occur or does Microsoft Windows XP boot as normal?

  • Where can I get a new hard drive for my intel imac?  **** thing dumped, less than 3 years old.

This is my first mac and the **** hard drive crashed in only 2+ years and of course the waranty is expired.  Can I replace the hard drive with any 3.5" replacement or do I need something special.  And if I do where can I get it?  I didn't see anything specifically for an intel imac at apple store.  I don't want to pay apple to install it, already spent enough money on this disappointing purchase.

any 3.5" Sata drive will do.  I recommend http://www.macsales.com/, or http://www.newegg.com/

  • Power supply dead? Can I get at the Hard drive?

I recently had a storm which blew one of my external firewire drives (it goes on but won't mount) and when I tried using my older G4 (Quicksilver, with OS10.3.9, and Classic) to boot up in OS9 and try my Norton Utilities, the G4 froze. It did it several times. I eventually pulled the power cord. When I plugged it back it, there was a spark (at the plug in point on the G4, not the wall outlet. Since then, it won't power up.
I tried booting it up in firewire disk mode and using my Intel MacPro, but no dice.
I did a search and have seen discussion on what sounds like my same problem. I hold the power button and the light goes on, but goes right off as soon as I let go.
I tried pressing the PMU; I saw a lot of discussion about the CUDA button but it seems these are one and the same thing. I removed the small battery and tried to get a replacement but have not succeeded as yet. Though I don't think that's the problem. It might be the power supply.
Anyway, here's my question: can I use the power supply and/or battery from an even older Mac, a PPC 8600?
And, whether or not that works, can I yank the hard drive from my G4, along with a second internal drive I put in (slave) in order to get data of it? (I'll give up trying to fix the G$ itself if I can just get my files off it.
*While I'm at it, can I take apart the external firewire drive that won't mount, and get at the files on that in some way. I tried Data Rescue ll but the drive still would not mount so that was useless.
Any help on any of these will be greatly appreciated. (Yes, I do have a nice big powerful UPS but the G4 and the external were no plugged in to it).
    Thanks

    Hi-
To recover your hard drives and data (including the external) get yourself a housing, and insert a drive, and move data to a different computer.
You'll want a firewire external housing with the Oxford chipset. I can recommend any of the FW or FW combo housings by OWC on the following page:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/add-ons-and-hubs/enclosure-kits
You will need a QS power supply-others won't work.
If you end up wanting a power supply for the QS, check eBay, or the following:

    http://hardcoremac.stores.yahoo.net/pog4quposu34.html
As for the battery, as long as it is the same 3.6v and form factor, any will do:

The Radio Shack P/N is 23-026.
