Can't get new mail

hi there. i've just switched frim my old imac g3 (10.3.9) to my new g5. my problem is that i can send e-mails but i can't recieve them. i am using the apple mail program.
thanks.

Hello trumancol.
What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
What does “i can't recieve” mean? What’s the problem exactly? Is it that Mail doesn’t check for mail on this account, or that it checks but downloads nothing, or what?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
In Mail, open Window > Connection Doctor. What does it say?
Could it be that Mail or this particular account is in an “offline” state? Is the Mailbox > Go Online command enabled or disabled?
Go to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced. Is Include when automatically checking for new mail ON or OFF?
What’s the time interval chosen in Preferences > General > Check for New Mail?
Open Window > Activity Viewer and tell Mail to check for mail on this account. What do you see there?
Does this account allow web access? If you log into your mail account on the web, do the messages appear there?
Open the Account Info window by choosing Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailbox list in the main Mail window. Does Mail display there the messages that it doesn’t download? Do they appear as already downloaded or as not downloaded yet (dot column)?

  • Can't get new mail nor view last 2 years of mail

I am running OSX 10.6.8 with Mail 4.6 using a POP connection to pull emails from Gmail. While Mail updates Apple RSS feeds, it does not get new mail. Also I can't view any mail I have received since 2012. Since Mail 4.6 was only copyrighted until 2012 is that what is going on? I regularly update software so I presumed my mail software was being kept up to date. Also I have 12K piece of mail , could that be an issue? Could I be receiving the mail and its hidden? Please advise. Thanks

Although no one responded I am posting because this is a cautionary tale. The key problem was that I was synching my mail account to Gmail through POP whereas gmail switched to IMAP two years ago. Because I was unaware of this switch (let's not talk about that) three things were happening. My mail could not get new mail as it was looking for a non-existent i.e. retired connection protocol. So 1) couldn't read new mail, 2) could delete or clean up mail and 3) which was by far the worst part was that the synching I had set up between address book and gmail contacts was going crazy metastisizing contacts and that was putting a strain on my CPU where often 90 % of the CPU use was going to trying something it could not due. Which meant my computer was running very very slowly to the point where I was ready to junk it.

  • Can't get new mail sound to work

i recently updated to Lion and set up my gmail account on the 'Mail' application on the imac.  My sound is on, and i enabled the new mail sound, however when i get a new email, it doesn't make the sound.  What should i do?

I had the same problem but that was because I had the wrong sound-output selected. Make sure it's set to "Selected sound output device".
System Preferences > Sound > Sound  Effects
Hope this works for you as well.

  • Can't get new Mail from my Pop-Account...

    Hello,
I have a problem with Mail, as I can perfectly send but not receive Mails from my Pop-Account. The settings are fine and the problem came up suddenly. When I try to get mail from Pop-Account the application starts to load, shows the number of mails in the account, begins to count up the size and then stops. I can even see the title of the mails by opening the window of the Account, but Mail does not download them.
I would be really pleased if anybody could give me an advice what to do.
Thanks a lot an greeting from a German in Bahrain
    Jan

Hello and thanks to both of you,
I am using Mail 3.1 and the Account is coming from Strato, a German provider. Before, I had no problems neither with receiving nor with sending, but suddenly it stoped. I tried another account (gmail) that worked without any problem. Also your advice with SSl and the ports did not help . I Also phoned the Helpline of the provider Strato without any result . Also the place does not change - it neither works at home nor at work.
    Regards from a desperate Mac-User

  • Can we get news grps mail tro mails or can we access these mails tro outlook or any mail clients ??

    Hello
Can we get news grps mail tro mails or can we access these mails tro outlook or
    any mail clients ??
    Kindly Write Vack,
    Dilip

OK, getting really close now.  Per your recommendations, I eliminated the middle tier of accounts.  Things now look like this:
Top Tier:  a single account (e.g.: [email protected]) for sharing only common Contacts and Calendar entries to be available to all family members below.
Bottom Tier:  one unique account for each IOS device (e.g.: oharahusband@, oharawife@, oharachild1@, ... oharachildn@).  Each family device will add the oharafamily@ and select only Contacts and Calendars for that Top Tier account.
I have tested this at a basic level by adding, changing and removing contacts and calendar entries at the oharagroup level, and observed these entries appearing and disappearing properly in the iPhone 4 and iPad associated apps.
Now I have two additional questions:
Q1 - In the near future, as I buy additional iOS devices, I will want to be able to see my own (but not my wife's) personal information across all my iOS devices (and vice versa).  When I add a new iOS devices, for example, for myself, should I:
    Alternative 1:
Assign each new device of mine a unique new iCloud account (e.g., oharahusbandipad@, oharahusband iphone, etc.),
Make that new iCloud account the primary for the device in question,
Then (I'm guessing here) make sure that in the Acounts settings for each of my iOS devices include all my other iCloud primary acounts/devices, and,
Finally, add in the oharagroup@ into the new device's Accounts section to include shared entries
    OR
    Alternative 2:
Assign the same iCloud account number to each new device (for example, all mine beome oharahusband@),
Make that primary on all my devices, and,
include the oharagroup@ in each device's Accounts settings for sharing.
    Thanks!

  • I have a gmail account set up on my macbook pro. One mail I sent with photos continues to repeatedly downloaded in Recovery. At the same time my Gmail won't download new emails into Inbox when I press Get New Mail. Help

I have a gmail account set up on my mac. A few days ago I sent an email with photos in it and this email now is continuosly being recovered. In the meantime my inbox has stopped downloading new messages, even when i press Get New Mail. How can I stop the repeated recovery of the email and how can I get my inbox to download again?

OK, I persevered and used the Rebuild mailbox option on Mail, actually had to do it twice, but now when I boot up and Mail opens all the previously received iCloud messages I've read on iPhone/iPad are pushed through.
    Back to normal...

    Hi,
If your OS is Linux you can update Firefox using the Package Manager / Software Center. After opening the Manager type '''firefox''' in the search area, tick '''firefox''' in the results and apply. You may also be asked to accept additional new dependencies.
    or
You can directly download the latest version for Linux here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
It is a zip package and you have to unzip it and run the script file named '''firefox''' inside the unzipped folder. You have to go inside this folder every time to run this file or you can create a link to the '''firefox''' file on the desktop. In this case please note that the old Firefox installation will still exist and the usual links will open that instead of the new one.

  • Mail app crashes when getting new mail

Seems like it crashes while getting new mail. I had 'letterbox' plugin installed, thought that may be the problem, uninstalled it, but mail.app keeps crashing immediately after starting (while checking for mail). Any suggestions what the problem could be? Thanks!
I can paste the error report if that helps (probably not sure if that contains secure information that's better not shared with the world).

  • 700p suddenly gives invalid user/password message when trying to get new mail

My Yahoo Mail Plus account is working fine. When I use versamail on the Palm Treo 700p to retrieve emails from my active Yahoo account, I get "-ERR(Auth)invalid user/password" message. I can access my Yahoo Mail account from the "Web" app on my treo.
So it is definitely a VersaMail issue. This happened after it had been getting new mail (and sending) successfully.
    Can anyone help?
Post relates to: Treo 700p (Verizon)

unfortunately Yahoo and their Branded contracts just don't work as advertised and neither the ISPs Nor Yahoo appear in the slightest bit interested.
If you delete the popstate.dat file in the profile folder in the yahoo server directory, it will restart the download again from the top (Everything)
You might also find that disabling email scanning in your anti virus program may be beneficial. (Could it be McAfee?)
The majority of RETR complaints here are from ATT and BT users, both of whom get McAfee given in by their ISP.

  • I can't get 'new message' in imail....any ideas?

I can't get 'new message' in imail....any ideas?

Step 1: Turn on the computer
Step 2: Do you have an Internet connection? To test this, go to your applications and in the utilities folder double click on Network Utility. Go to the ping section and type in www.Google.com. If you can get there then you have Internet. Make sure your DNS servers are correct for the network you are on. If you are using a static IP try using DHCP and get an IP address and check then.
Step 3:Are you at home or school? If you are at school, they might have the mail app blocked. I know that at my college, I am unable to get my mail on the Apple Mail app.
Step 4: Are your connections configured correctly on the mail app. If you are using gmail, the settings will be automatically configured. If you have your own e-mail address you are adding for your work then you will have to consult your IT department and get the correct settings.
Step 4: Do you have an antivirus software that is blocking any Internet connection for the app. Yes I said antivirus and mac in the same sentence. MAC GETS VIRUSES TOO! Go into the firewall configuration and unblock the mail app.

  • where can I download new mail sound when new mail comes in?

where can I download new mail sound when new mail comes in?
    Thank you,
    BigBlaze

Go to Mail Preferences, use the drop-down "new mail sounds". The very last option is ADD/REMOVE. You can choose a sound that will be copied to your own User Library.
To find how many sounds you already have on the computer (TONS if you have any games) just to a search the computer for aiff or aif. Copy the file you like to the desktop so you can find it easily, and add it using the above instructions.
The sound gets copied to your library, so you can delete the desktop file when you're done.

  • Mail refuses to get new mail.

Mail refuses to get new mail. (Imac 10.9.5, Mail 7.3. ) Connection doc shows wheels to all my accounts spinning (IMap and POP).  Activity  cited Mail was trying to connect to Icloud.  Evidently stuck there.  This is just one problem in a succession of many with the Mail program ever since I upgraded to 10.9.5, but it is the worst so far.  Restarting doesn't seem to fix it.  Any suggestions?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Thumping sound when I get new mail

I get a thumping sound when I get new mail. How do I turn it off?
In mail preferences I selected none for new mail sound. And unchecked the Play sounds for other mail actions.

The thumping sound you hear is probably your computer's default "alert" sound that plays when you click something that really can't be clicked or try to make something happen that the computer can't do. It informs you with a little "alert" sound. So, when you get your mail, your computer is automatically doing something that generates an alert. Not sure what that can be. Perhaps checking mail on a second account that is set up incorrectly?
To see if the thump sound is indeed your computers alert sound, go into System Preferences and check on sound and choose your alert sound there.

  • Long delay getting new mail

I am experiencing a long delay in Mail getting new mail. Here's what happens:
    1. on launching Mail, it gets new mail immediately, so I know my account settings are good.
    2. once Mail is running, there is a long delay in updating new incoming mail -- can be hours. I have Mail set to check every five minutes. Also, I can manually click on Get Mail and I get a No New Mail beep even when there is new mail (see next point).
    3. If I use webmail to access my account, I can see new mail sitting in my In Box.
    4. if I quit and relaunch Mail, the new mail shows up.
I have an IMAP account which has worked well for years. This delayed behaviour started a few months ago when I was running Leopard. I posted a question but never got an answer that worked. Now I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.4, and hoped Mail would correct itself with the upgrade. It didn't.
I was once advised that it might have something to do with the Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > "Use IDLE command if the server supports it" setting. However, this preference is ticked and greyed out so I can't change it. (The advice was to turn it on or off and see if that was a fix).
I am running on an iMac 24" Core 2 duo (early 2008 model). After the Snow Leopard upgrade I repaired permissions and ran all the chron scripts. So my system should be pretty good.
I would be grateful for any help. I have clients call and say "I just sent you an email..." and I appear dumb because I have to go to webmail to get it right away.

It's getting better. I used Other to setup my mail acc via MfE, by tricking it to a non uniform mail. That worked, I changed it back to googlemail and guess what?! Next time I boot the phone, the MfE is gone. but it still registers in the background so I can't create a new one. Configuration Tool 6.3 does see it but cannot overwrite it. PixiEnables package and its font nonsens severly screw with PopUpClock, Screensaver and SleepingScreen memory boundaries so those three crash. Thanks for nothing MS apps -.-
